Impacts Of Banamine Injection On Pain Responses Of Either Rubber Ring Castrated And Tail Docked Or Surgically Castrated And Docked Lambs, Paige Porter Anderson Jan 2020

Impacts Of Banamine Injection On Pain Responses Of Either Rubber Ring Castrated And Tail Docked Or Surgically Castrated And Docked Lambs, Paige Porter Anderson

Animal Sciences

Our hypothesis was that administering Flunixin Meglumine (FM) to lambs that were both rubber ring castrated and docked or surgically castrated and emasculator docked would decrease behavioral stress, serum cortisol, haptoglobin concentration, and wound and swelling score, but increase average daily gain. Rambouillet ram lambs (n = 181) were allocated with a completely randomized design in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Treatment combinations included rubber ring castration and docking (on ram lambs with administration of saline or FM) or surgical castration and emasculator docking (on ram lambs with administration of saline or FM). Ram lambs were castrated …

Childhood Obesity: Developing Early Nutrition & Feeding Education For Parents At Well Child Visits, Ashley Lynn Benson Jan 2020

Childhood Obesity: Developing Early Nutrition & Feeding Education For Parents At Well Child Visits, Ashley Lynn Benson

Nursing

Childhood obesity is an extensive problem in the United States and North Dakota (CDC, 2014). Significant health consequences are linked to obesity, including type two diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and psychological disorders (Pandita et al., 2016; Xu & Mishra, 2018). Obesity comorbidities, previously presented in later adulthood, now emerge in younger populations (Pandita et al., 2016). Unfortunately, treatment of obesity is not effective, and therefore, prevention must be the primary focus (Daniels et al., 2015; Pandita et al., 2016). Diet and eating behaviors have a significant impact on weight, and children develop taste preferences and lifelong eating behaviors …

A Collaborative Hypertension Clinic Pilot Program In A Rural Primary Care, Nicole Catherine Pink Jan 2020

A Collaborative Hypertension Clinic Pilot Program In A Rural Primary Care, Nicole Catherine Pink

Nursing

In 2019, there were about seventy-million Americans with uncontrolled high blood pressure (BP) or hypertension (HTN) (Kitt, Fox, Tucker & McManus, 2019). Hypertension is the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide (Stephen, Halcomb, McInnes, Batterham & Zwar, 2019). Uncontrolled HTN contributes to stroke, myocardial infarction, and renal failure, and is the most modifiable risk factor for heart disease and death (American Academy of Family Physicians [AAFP], 2019; Oparil & Schmider, 2015). Patients living in rural America have an increased prevalence of HTN and their access to preventative health services is lower (Buford, 2016; Caldwell, Ford, Wallace, Wang & Takahashi, 2016). …

Identification Of Disordered Eating Behaviors In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Heather Erin Kranitz Jan 2020

Identification Of Disordered Eating Behaviors In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Heather Erin Kranitz

Nursing

Type 1 diabetes is a life-long chronic condition that typically presents in childhood, and approximately 193,000 Americans under age 20 are estimated to have either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. Additionally, approximately 20-30% of adolescents with Type 1 diabetes have disordered eating behaviors or eating disorders. A common way disordered eating manifests in Type 1 diabetes is through manipulation of insulin dosages to promote hyperglycemia and subsequent weight loss. Disordered eating in diabetes can lead to short term complications such as diabetic ketoacidosis, severe hypoglycemia, and chronic long-term health conditions arising from complications of uncontrolled diabetes. Identification and screening …

‘Coronated’ Consumption In The Viral Market, Soonkwan Hong Jan 2020

‘Coronated’ Consumption In The Viral Market, Soonkwan Hong

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The universal exposure to the virus has disrupted institutions, redefined values, and reshaped systems, including the market. Idling, uncertainty, and liquidity encapsulate the ever-precarious individual lives and the reflexive socio-politico-cultural changes. These conditions and consequences nonetheless create paradoxical opportunities in the viral market. The new meaning of connectivity that promotes high-viscosity relationships and high-visibility identities will transform the market to better acknowledge and support humans and the new sociality.

Investigating The Mechanism Driving Near-Tool Visual Biases, Robert Ryan Mcmanus Jan 2020

Investigating The Mechanism Driving Near-Tool Visual Biases, Robert Ryan Mcmanus

Psychology

Previous research has shown that when observers hold a tool, they experience action-oriented visual biases in the area around this tool that are similar to visual biases that exist around the hands. Some researchers have theorized this effect is due to the tool being incorporated into the body schema following active tool use, while others argue that this effect may simply be due to the tool’s visual salience. The goal of the present study was to test these competing explanations of near-tool visual biases. In the first experiment, participants completed a target detection task under one of three conditions: 1) …

Aging, Object-Based Inhibition, And Online Data Collection, Asenath Xochitl Arauza Huether Jan 2020

Aging, Object-Based Inhibition, And Online Data Collection, Asenath Xochitl Arauza Huether

Psychology

Visual selective attention operates in space- and object-based frames of reference. Stimulus salience and task demands influence whether a space- or object-based frame of reference guides attention. I conducted two experiments for the present dissertation to evaluate age patterns in the role of inhibition in object-based attention. The biased competition account (Desimone & Duncan, 1995) proposes that one mechanism through which targets are selected is through suppression of irrelevant stimuli. The inhibitory deficit hypothesis (Hasher & Zacks, 1988) predicts that older adults do not appropriately suppress or ignore irrelevant information. The purpose of the first study was to evaluate whether …

Psychological Stress, Stress Reactivity And Blood Glucose Metabolization During Pregnancy, Anna Marie Strahm Jan 2020

Psychological Stress, Stress Reactivity And Blood Glucose Metabolization During Pregnancy, Anna Marie Strahm

Psychology

Gestational diabetes mellitus impacts between 3-10% of pregnancies, and increases the risk of pregnancy complications and lifelong health effects for mother and child (Bellamy, Casas, Hingorani, & Williams, 2009; Ross, 2006; Ryser Rüetschi et al., 2016). About half of cases occur without an evident risk factor (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), 1994; Dode & Santos, 2009). The present study was designed to examine possible psychophysiological connections linking psychological stress and stress reactivity, the magnitude of an individual’s response to stress, to blood sugar metabolization during mid-pregnancy between 24-28 weeks gestation. Participants were recruited from Sanford Health in Fargo, …

Emotion-Related Socialization In The Classroom: Considering The Roles Of Teachers And Peers, Carlos Valiente, Jodi Swanson, Dawn Delay, Ashley M. Fraser, Julia H. Parker

Faculty Publications

The goal of this paper was to apply aspects of the heuristic model advanced by Eisenberg, Cumberland, and Spinrad (1998)to the study of socialization that takes place in preschool and elementary school classrooms. Investigating socialization in this context is important given the number of hours students spend in school, the emotional nature of social interactions that take place involving teachers and students, and the emotions students often experience in the context of academic work. Guided by Eisenberg and colleagues’(1998) call to consider complex socialization pathways, we focus our discussion on ways teachers, peers, and the classroom context can shape students’ …

Parents Of Children With Autism: The Stigma And Emotion Work Associated With Navigating, Advocating, And Managing Autism, Paige Deana Stark Jan 2020

Parents Of Children With Autism: The Stigma And Emotion Work Associated With Navigating, Advocating, And Managing Autism, Paige Deana Stark

Sociology and Anthropology

This study analyzes the experiences of stigmatization and emotion work through the interview responses of eight parents of children with autism. Developing from Goffman’s theories of direct stigma and associative stigma this research integrates Hochschild’s emotion work as a way that parents respond to the stigmatization that they encounter. The results of this study indicate that some parents of children with autism perform suppressive emotion work in the way they respond to stigmatization and obstacles that occur when raising a child with special needs. In addition, stigma occurs in interactions with close friends and family members, creating issues of boundary-crossing. …

Comparing Performance Of Anova To Poisson And Negative Binomial Regression When Applied To Count Data, Ibrahim Soumare Jan 2020

Comparing Performance Of Anova To Poisson And Negative Binomial Regression When Applied To Count Data, Ibrahim Soumare

Statistics

Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is the easiest and most widely used model nowadays in statistics. ANOVA however requires a set of assumptions for the model to be a valid choice and for the inferences to be accurate. Among many, ANOVA assumes the data in question is normally distributed and homogenous. However, data from most disciplines does not meet the assumption of normality and/or equal variance. Regrettably, researchers do not always check whether the assumptions are met, and if these assumptions are violated, inferences might well be wrong. We conducted a simulation study to compare the performance of standard ANOVA to …
