A Phenomenological Study On Adoption Disclosure Experienced By Adult Adoptees, Carmen H. Leggett Jan 2020

A Phenomenological Study On Adoption Disclosure Experienced By Adult Adoptees, Carmen H. Leggett

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThis research addressed the psychological experiences that adoption disclosure has on adoptees and their systems. In this phenomenological study eight interviews were conducted that consisted of four females and four males guided by general systems theory. Interviews were conducted via video conference, telephone, and email/telephone. Data saturation was achieved after the fourth interview as no new information had surfaced and similar responses were being echoed repeatedly from the participants. However, the interviews continued because the stories being shared by the participants were invaluable and to ensure the sampling criteria of eight participants was met. The interviews were transcribed, and several …

Adolescent Suicidal Ideation And Parental Perception, Parenting Style, And Parental Denial, Julie Mann Jan 2020

Adolescent Suicidal Ideation And Parental Perception, Parenting Style, And Parental Denial, Julie Mann

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Adolescent suicidal ideation is a substantial health concern in the United States, from both mental and physical perspectives. Parent-child connectedness (PCC) ostensibly plays a considerable role in reducing the problem. Along with parents of youth who are struggling with suicide, mental health care providers and school administrators would appreciate understanding more effective strategies for eliminating adolescent suicidal ideation. This cross-sectional, quantitative study sought a statistically significant relationship between PCC measured as parental perception, parenting style, and parental denial (independent variables) and the dependent variable of adolescent suicidal ideation. Bandura’s social cognitive theory, Baumrind’s parenting style theory, and Mowder’s parent development …

Exploring Family-Centered Care From The Perspectives Of Home-Health Physical Therapists, James Mathews Jan 2020

Exploring Family-Centered Care From The Perspectives Of Home-Health Physical Therapists, James Mathews

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Older adults may need, or desire, caregiver and family involvement to avoid hospitalizations and institutionalizations. The caregivers of these older adults have the highest rates of burnout, injury, and turnover. Family-centered care (FCC) involves collaboration between healthcare practitioners, patients, family members, and caregivers. FCC is both established and effective in pediatric care settings. There is a paucity of evidence on how FCC is applied to older adult populations. Home health physical therapists (HHPTs) work with older adults in their homes and train both family members on how to safely handle and manage the care-dependent older adult. The purpose of this …

AbstractFollowing the 2007–2008 global financial crisis, the Financial Stability Board identified several areas of weakness in the delivery of deposit insurance, among other interventions. One of the key recommendations related to the use of data by deposit insurers to make their coverage limits more robust. The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental cross-sectional study was to test the impact of 4 data sets—aggregate bank risk, the aggregate value of insured deposits, the DIF size, and premium levy—on the deposit insurance coverage limit. The contribution of immigrant Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workers in addressing the projected shortage of U.S. STEM workforce cannot be overemphasized. Despite efforts by U.S. policy makers to provide opportunities for a positive STEM experience and diversify the STEM field by increasing the number of underrepresented minorities and women via The Women and Minorities in STEM Booster Act, changes to the U.S. immigration policy towards Nigeria, including bans on immigrant visas and Diversity visas could impact recruitment of immigrant Nigerian workers in STEM. Using Kingdon’s multiple streams framework and Crenshaw’s intersectionality theory, this study explored the career experiences …

Effect Of Clinical Hours And Program Type On Nclex Pass Rates, Kara Potter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Clinical education is an essential portion of prelicensure nursing education throughout the United States. There is a lack of research examining clinical education in nursing programs and minimum competency for entry into practice as measured by the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) results and differences in levels of care between associate degree (ADN) nurses and bachelor’s degree (BSN) nurses. The purposes of this study, guided by Benner’s novice to expert theory, were to determine whether the total number of clinical hours, program type (ADN vs. BSN) ,simulation hours, patient care clinical hours, and skills lab hours between ADN and BSN …

Verbal Abuse Toward Early Career Nurses And The Effect To Workforce Operations, Steven G. Purdon Jan 2020

Verbal Abuse Toward Early Career Nurses And The Effect To Workforce Operations, Steven G. Purdon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractSeveral studies report that healthcare workers face verbal abuse from patients, patients’ family members, and other healthcare personnel at increasingly higher rates, and trends depict early-career registered nurses (ECRNs) are affected disproportionally. This negative trend can affect the future registered nurse (RN) workforce and create a potential shortfall of qualified nurses. It has become increasingly important for hospital administrators to mitigate verbal abuse among ECRNs to manage their future RN workforce. This purpose of this quantitative study was to empirically evaluate the effects of verbal abuse towards ECRNs. This study used the social exchange theory to provide a framework that …

AbstractWrongful conviction is a pressing legal and social justice issue that requires scholarly attention in the United States. The role of jurors in the criminal justice system has been empirically investigated and debated for many decades as researchers attempt to understand the juror decision-making process and how jurors contribute to wrongful conviction. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively explore how errors in juror cognition during decision-making led to juror reliance on narrative construction and commonsense reasoning rather than legal and judicial instruction in wrongful conviction cases. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 jurors who served on a criminal …

A Narrative Approach To Understanding Career Attrition For Women Engineers, Brian Merritt Scott Jan 2020

A Narrative Approach To Understanding Career Attrition For Women Engineers, Brian Merritt Scott

Research has identified a relationship between work stress and burnout among teachers. However, this relationship has not been explored among teachers who have students diagnosed with autism in their classrooms. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teacher job-related stress, burnout, quality of parent-teacher relationships, and teacher self-efficacy among …
