Beyond The Family Tree: Genealogy Instruction As A Gateway To Primary Source Literacy, Deedee Baldwin

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Say the word “genealogy” in an academic library, and you are bound to see weary librarians and archivists roll their eyes and sigh. But academic librarians can do more than accepting genealogists as a frustrating fact of life: they can recognize a perfect opportunity to teach primary source literacy concepts to a group that is more than open to learning them.

Swimming Of Motile Gyrotactic Microorganisms And Nanoparticles In Blood Flow Through Anisotropically Tapered Arteries, M. M. Bhatti, M. Marin, A. Zeeshan, R. Ellahi, Sara I. Abdelsalam Jan 2020

Swimming Of Motile Gyrotactic Microorganisms And Nanoparticles In Blood Flow Through Anisotropically Tapered Arteries, M. M. Bhatti, M. Marin, A. Zeeshan, R. Ellahi, Sara I. Abdelsalam

Basic Science Engineering

In the present article, we have presented a theoretical study on the swimming of migratory gyrotactic microorganisms in a non-Newtonian blood-based nanofluid via an anisotropically narrowing artery. Sutterby fluid model is used in order to understand the rheology of the blood as a non-Newtonian fluid model. This fluid pattern has the ability to show Newtonian and non-Newtonian features. The mathematical formulation is performed via continuity, temperature, motile microorganism, momentum, and concentration equation. The series solutions are obtained using the perturbation scheme up to the third-order approximation. The resulting solutions are discussed with the help of graphs for all the leading …

Adverse Effects Of A Hybrid Nanofluid In A Wavy Non-Uniform Annulus With Convective Boundary Conditions, H. Sadaf, Sara I. Abdelsalam Jan 2020

Adverse Effects Of A Hybrid Nanofluid In A Wavy Non-Uniform Annulus With Convective Boundary Conditions, H. Sadaf, Sara I. Abdelsalam

Basic Science Engineering

The presented investigation theoretically studies the physical characteristics of a two-dimensional incompressible hybrid nanofluid in a non-uniform annulus where the boundaries are flexible. A mixed convective peristaltic mechanism is implemented to model blood-based nanofluids using two different nanoparticles (Ag + Al2O3). Convective boundary conditions are employed and different forms of nanoparticles are discussed (bricks, cylinders and platelets). The problem is shortened by engaging a lubrication method. Exact expressions for the temperature of cumulative heat source/sink standards, hemodynamic velocity, pressure gradient and streamlines of different shapes of nanoparticles are obtained. Special cases of pure blood and the Al2O3 nanofluid of our …

Energy-Scape Web-Based Application Is An Effective Tool To Overcome The Basic Knowledge Of Architects Toward Renewable Energy Properties, Rania Rushdy Moussa, Khaled M. Dewidar

Architectural Engineering

In last few years, research on renewables were shifted from integrating renewable energy (RE) with buildings into integrating renewable energy (RE) within urban environment due to the large occupies of urban areas in comparing to the building foot print. Urban areas such as urban landscape areas have a great potential in generating huge amount of energy that could satisfy the needs of urban neighbor-hoods. The presented research identify the properties of a new elements called Energy-scape elements (ESE) that integrates RE devices with urban landscape elements. This research focuses on analyzing the efficiency of web-based application called “Energy-scape software” (ESS) …

© 2013 IEEE. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), commonly known as autism, is a lifelong developmental disorder associated with a broad range of symptoms including difficulties in social interaction, communication skills, and restricted and repetitive behaviors. In autism spectrum disorder, numerous studies suggest abnormal development of neural networks that manifest itself as abnormalities of brain shape, functionality, and/ or connectivity. The aim of this work is to present our automated computer aided diagnostic (CAD) system for accurate identification of autism spectrum disorder based on the connectivity of the white matter (WM) tracts. To achieve this goal, two levels of analysis are …

© 2020 by authors. Within recent years there has been increasing societal concern around the compulsive and excessive use of digital and Internet-enabled devices, such as the use of social media or online video gaming, and associated psychological and physical harms. However, problematic use or addictive behaviours are not yet included as diagnosable mental health issues in any major diagnostic system in Western countries and the conceptualisations of the phenomena are still inconsistent. To address this issue, the present study reviewed the current conceptualisations of digital addiction used within the research literature and identified common features of the definition of …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Adding appropriate punctuation marks into text is an essential step in speech-to-text where such information is usually not available. While this has been extensively studied for English, there is no large-scale dataset and comprehensive study in the punctuation prediction problem for the Vietnamese language. In this paper, we collect two massive datasets and conduct a benchmark with both traditional methods and deep neural networks. We aim to publish both our data and all implementation codes to facilitate further research, not only in Vietnamese punctuation prediction but also in other related fields. Our project, including datasets and implementation details, is publicly …

Coupled Rain Streak And Background Estimation Via Separable Element-Wise Attention, Yinjie Tan, Qiang Wen, Jing Qin, Jianbo Jiao, Guoqiang Han, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Single image de-raining is challenging especially in the scenarios with dense rain streaks. Existing methods resolve this problem by predicting the rain streaks of the image, which constrains the network to focus on local rain streaks features. However, dense rain streaks are visually similar to mist or fog (with large intensities), in this case, the training objective should be shifted to image recovery instead of extracting rain streaks. In this paper, we propose a coupled rain streak and background estimation network that explores the intrinsic relations between two tasks. In particular, our network produces task-dependent feature maps, each part of …

Moreover, for the detailed diagnosis of varied diseases such as knee rheumatoid arthritis (RA), segmentation of the knee magnetic resonance image is a challenging and complex task that has been explored broadly. However, the accuracy and reproducibility of segmentation approaches may require prior extraction of tissues from MR images. The advances in computational methods for segmentation are reliant on several parameters such as the complexity of the tissue, quality, and acquisition process involved. Neighbourhood Structure Preserving Cross-Modal Embedding For Video Hyperlinking, Yanbin Hao, Chong-Wah Ngo, Benoit Huet

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Video hyperlinking is a task aiming to enhance the accessibility of large archives, by establishing links between fragments of videos. The links model the aboutness between fragments for efficient traversal of video content. This paper addresses the problem of link construction from the perspective of cross-modal embedding. To this end, a generalized multi-modal auto-encoder is proposed.& x00A0;The encoder learns two embeddings from visual and speech modalities, respectively, whereas each of the embeddings performs self-modal and cross-modal translation of modalities. Furthermore, to preserve the neighbourhood structure of fragments, which is important for video hyperlinking, the auto-encoder is devised to model data …

In this version, we propose a sketch-based retrieval model, which allows the user to specify a video scene with objects and their basic properties, including color, size, and location. We further utilize the temporal relation between video frames to strengthen this retrieval model. For text-based retrieval module, we supply speech and on-screen text for free-text search and upgrade the concept bank for concept search. The search interface is also re-designed targeting the novice user. With the introduced system, we expect that …
