An Efficient Design Methodology For Complex Sequential Asynchronous Digital Circuits, Tomasz Chadzynski Dec 2020

An Efficient Design Methodology For Complex Sequential Asynchronous Digital Circuits, Tomasz Chadzynski

Master's Theses

Asynchronous digital logic as a design alternative offers a smaller circuit area and lower power consumption but suffers from increased complexity and difficulties related to logic hazards and elements synchronization. The presented work proposes a design methodology based on the speed-independent sequential logic theory, oriented toward asynchronous hardware implementation of complex multi-step algorithms. Targeting controller-centric devices that perform data-driven non-linear execution, the methodology offers a CSP language-based controller workflow description approach and the specification of a project implementation template supported by a two-stage design process. First, the CSP layer describes complex speed-independent controller behavior offering better scalability and maintainability than …

Identifying Key Residues Involved In Allosteric Regulation Of Human Sirt1 Deacetylation Activity, Angelina Huynh Dec 2020

Identifying Key Residues Involved In Allosteric Regulation Of Human Sirt1 Deacetylation Activity, Angelina Huynh

Master's Theses

SIRT1 is a mammalian NAD+-dependent lysine deacetylase involved in the regulation of physiological processes. Sirtuin-activating compounds (STACs) such as resveratrol bind to the allosteric site within the N-terminal domain (NTD) to regulate activity. Understanding these allosteric effects on SIRT1 would provide insights into drug design to modulate SIRT1-dependent deacetylation on specific substrates. The overall goal of this research is to identify key residues that are involved in allosteric activation of the enzyme, also known as an allosteric switch-like region. Using computational methods based on the primary sequence of SIRT1, we identified residues 186-193 to have a propensity to exhibit switch-like …

Influence Of Night Work On Performance During Lunar Telerobotic Operations, Zachary Luke Glaros

Master's Theses

Real-time, reactive telerobotic mission control operations require personnel to actively operate remotely controlled vehicles or robots in real time. Due to the physical separation of the vehicle from the operator, such operations present additional factors that can influence fatigue (degraded mental performance) and workload (mental and physical cost of task requirements), making it difficult to assess how long an individual can conduct operations safely. The upcoming Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover will involve remotely controlling a lunar vehicle from an Earth-based mission control station. In order to determine how long personnel could successfully maintain alertness and performance while operating a …

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Path-Planning For Multi-Agent Systems In Advection-Diffusion Field Reconstruction Tasks, Deepak Talwar

Master's Theses

Many environmental processes can be represented mathematically using spatial-temporal varying partial-differential equations. Timely estimation and prediction of processes such as wildfires is critical for disaster management response, but is difficult to accomplish without the availability of a dense network of stationary sensors. In this work, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-based real-time path-planning algorithm for mobile sensor networks traveling in a formation through a spatial-temporal varying advection-diffusion field for the task of field reconstruction. A deep Q-network (DQN) agent is trained on simulated advection-diffusion fields to direct the mobile sensor network to travel along information-rich trajectories. The field measurements made …

Anatomy Of A Violent Protest Wave: Understanding The Mechanisms Of Escalation And De-Escalation In Far-Right And Anti-Fascist Street Clashes, Leanne Claire Serbulo

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

With the rise of right-wing populist ideologies and ensuing social polarization, political violence has become more widespread. Between 2017 and 2019, far-right extremists and anti-fascists engaged in more than twenty violent protest clashes in Portland, Oregon, USA. Through a protest event analysis of those clashes supplemented with a case study of the protest wave, this paper explores how the mechanisms of radicalization and de-radicalization operate when two violent protest movements collide and interact with state security forces. The three-way interaction among a movement, counter-movement, and the police can produce unanticipated outcomes. For example, rather than de-escalating the situation, police underbidding …

Warranty, Product Liability And Transaction Structure: The Problem Of Amazon, Edward J. Janger, Aaron D. Twerski

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

Amazon, and other internet sales platforms, have revolutionized the manner in which goods are purchased and sold. The obligations undertaken by Amazon in those sales are unclear, both as a matter of transparency, and as a matter of legal doctrine. Is Amazon a store? Is it a shipper? Is it a telephone? In various transactions Amazon can play some or all of these roles. Choosing the right metaphor has consequences. Amazon knows this and has done everything it can to deploy the metaphors selectively to its best legal and practical advantage, even when the chosen characterizations are inapt or even …

Door Shut And Ears Plugged: How Consumer Reporting Casts Identity Theft Victims Out Of Financial Society And How The Law Can Be Harmonized To Bring Them Back In, Ryan Bolger Dec 2020

Door Shut And Ears Plugged: How Consumer Reporting Casts Identity Theft Victims Out Of Financial Society And How The Law Can Be Harmonized To Bring Them Back In, Ryan Bolger

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs) are the gatekeepers to the American economy. As the chief informants for prospective lenders, landlords, and employers, they exert immense power over the day-to-day decisions of who gets what. Despite these high stakes, the CRAs run consumer reporting as an automated electronic process that causes a lot of reporting errors, disqualifying consumers from essential goods, services, and opportunities. This is painfully true in the context of identity theft, where perverse incentives pollute the integrity of consumer reporting, piling undue harm onto identity theft victims. The law provides a remedy for this problem, but circuit courts are …

The Modern Pay For Play Model: Laws That Protect Student-Athletes' Fundamental Right To Commercialze Their Names, Images, And Likeness, Paul A. Schwabe Jr.

Brooklyn Journal of Corporate, Financial & Commercial Law

In O’Bannon v. NCAA, the United States District Court for the Northern District of California entered a permanent injunction against the National Collegiate Athletic Association enjoining the collegiate sports governing body from enforcing limits on student-athlete compensation derived from the use of their name, images, and likenesses rights. The court concluded that NCAA rules unreasonably restrained trade in violation of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, however, neither the court nor the NCAA laid out a framework for lawfully implementing these new economic rights to student-athletes. Since that ruling, only one state’s legislature, California, has attempted to pass legislation to prevent the …
