Geographic Distribution Of Okenia Hypogaea And Soil Analysis Along The Coast Of John D. Macarthur Beach State Park, Makenna King
Geographic Distribution Of Okenia Hypogaea And Soil Analysis Along The Coast Of John D. Macarthur Beach State Park, Makenna King
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Okenia hypogaea is a rare vine-like dune plant found only in Mexico and five counties on Florida’s southeast coast, from St. Lucie to Miami-Dade County. At John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, GPS coordinates of all Okenia hypogaea within the park were collected to create a map. I repeated this process following substantial beach erosion, caused by Hurricane Dorian, to compare growth patterns and geographic distribution. This data can be utilized by park officials when managing this species. Soil analysis along the same 1.3-mile stretch of beach was done to evaluate environmental parameters impacting Okenia’s distribution and growth. Ten samples …
Yes Douglas Husak, Drunk Driving Is A Serious Offense., Brittany Kurland
Yes Douglas Husak, Drunk Driving Is A Serious Offense., Brittany Kurland
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Drunk driving is a serious offense, but often goes unnoticed because no harm is often caused by the person committing such a selfish act. Where there is an accident, fatal or minor, the individual is punished for driving while intoxicated. While many theorists believe that it is inappropriate to punish one who has a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over the legal limit of .08%, I propose that regardless of the individual harming or not harming another, the person who is driving while intoxicated should face punishment. It should not matter if the driver did not show any signs of impairment …
Using Drones For Studying Florida Manatees (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris), Abigail Lenhart
Using Drones For Studying Florida Manatees (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris), Abigail Lenhart
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Species monitoring, population assessments, and behavioral observations of many endangered marine mammals are typically limited to surveys of animal surfacings due to the challenges of detecting and tracking individuals that usually live in remote areas. This study demonstrates the benefits of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, as a noninvasive and low-cost method to monitor and observe Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) populations. We conducted several flights using a small multirotor drone to detect manatees in a warm-water refuge area at Round Island Riverside Park in Indian River County, Florida. Through the use of aerial videos, we confirmed three …
Proving Godel's Theorem, A Set-Theoretical Approach, Jean Lohier
Proving Godel's Theorem, A Set-Theoretical Approach, Jean Lohier
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Before Godel's incompleteness theorems, logicians such as Bertrand Russel and Alfred Whitehead pursued an ideal axiomatic system which would have created a reliable framework to successfully prove or refute every mathematical sentence. Godel proved that such systems can never be created. In fact, Godel's incompleteness theorems establish that axiomatic systems that are complex enough to formulate arithmetic can never generate a proof of all the logical statements that are expressible inside of them. According to the first incompleteness theorem, there are constructible mathematical sentences that can never be proven to be true or false using the axioms and the logical …
Courtship And Mating In Drosophila Flies: The Effects Of Social Behavior On Mating Drive, Anita Nwiloh
Courtship And Mating In Drosophila Flies: The Effects Of Social Behavior On Mating Drive, Anita Nwiloh
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Courtship is the series of behaviors that fly pairs engage in before potentially mating. These behaviors play a huge role in the mating success between fly pairs and certain variables such as the courtship index is used to measure this relationship. This study will analyze the unblinded results of distinct fly pairs from different strains , specifically the Canton S. and Dahomey strains, after being isolated to test their mating success. The statistical data of the fly pairs’ courting and mating behaviors, which has been output from the Jupyter Python program, will be analyzed. Furthermore, the supporting tables and graph …
Assessing The Development Of Tolerance To Amphetamine Using C. Elegans, Dayana Torres Valladares
Assessing The Development Of Tolerance To Amphetamine Using C. Elegans, Dayana Torres Valladares
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Amphetamine (AMPH) is a potent psychostimulant and is a known substance of abuse, also used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy. AMPH acts at the dopaminergic neurons through the dopamine transporter (DAT), and it leads to DAT-mediated efflux, resulting in an overall increase of dopamine (DA) in the synaptic cleft. It is known that exposure to AMPH may cause sensitization and/or tolerance. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying tolerance to AMPH are not yet well understood. Because DA has an inhibitory effect in C. elegans’ locomotion, the animals fail to sustain their normal swimming behavior when exposed to AMPH and …
Caregiver Burden And Its Effects On The Diet And Nutritional Status Of Family Caregivers Of The Older Adult With Dementia, Abigail Nwiloh
Caregiver Burden And Its Effects On The Diet And Nutritional Status Of Family Caregivers Of The Older Adult With Dementia, Abigail Nwiloh
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Dementia is a disease commonly found in older adults which impairs proper cognitive function and the ability of dementia patients to carry out daily tasks. Hence, there is a need for caregivers who can assist the patients by taking them through their daily living activities. Prior research has primarily been focused on the impact of this disease on the patient's quality of living without shedding ample light on the struggles that caregivers face. Caregivers undergo high-stress levels relative to the number of tasks they carryout for their patients and other contributing factors. Burdens that each dementia caregiver faces can take …
Cassava And Tropical Diabetes, Praewpailin Rich
Cassava And Tropical Diabetes, Praewpailin Rich
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Cassava is the third-largest source of food carbohydrates in the tropics and is a major staple food among developing countries. Cassava contains cyanogenic glycosides which turn into cyanide and are toxic to the body when ingested in a high content. Cyanide poisoning causes many symptoms including severe abdominal pain which is also one of the symptoms occurring in patients with pancreatitis. Tropical diabetes or fibrocalculous pancreatitis diabetes mellitus is secondary to tropical pancreatitis which is a form of non-alcoholic chronic calcific pancreatitis found primarily in tropical regions. The symptoms include severe abdominal pain. In this study, I will hypothesize that …
“What Role Do Dental Prescriptions Play In The Opioid Crisis?”, Palak Shah
“What Role Do Dental Prescriptions Play In The Opioid Crisis?”, Palak Shah
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 47,000 individuals died in 2017 due to an opioid overdose. Further, dentists are more likely to prescribe immediate-release opioids than other healthcare providers. In the late 1990s, dentists were responsible for 15.5% of prescriptions for immediate-release opioids, and 8% of these prescriptions in 2009. In this thesis I examine the reasons for this, including the ways in which a patient’s sex, age, race, and ethnicity play a role in dental prescriptions, and conclude that dentists do not consistently use the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMPs) or the guidelines set by …
A Computational Study Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Circadian Clock., Laura Páez
A Computational Study Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Circadian Clock., Laura Páez
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Drosophila melanogaster has an internal clock that controls sleep and waking behaviors and allows it to function appropriately on a daily cycle. The internal clock has a natural cycle about 24h-long that can be observed even in complete darkness, but also uses light cues to remain in sync with the actual day-night cycle. In this work, I use a computational model of the Drosophila clock to study the effect of varying intensities of light and duration of daytime on the period of the oscillations. The model tracks 15 clock molecules and their interactions to predict the evolution of their concentrations.

Testing For Chytrid Fungus Infection In Southeast Florida Crustaceans, Jeffrey Turn
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans, chytrid fungi (Chytridiomycota) species known for their lethality in amphibians by chytridiomycosis, were tested for in crayfish (Procambarus alleni and Procambarus fallax) and eastern grass shrimp (Palaemonetes paludosus). From 2019 to 2020, these crustaceans were gathered from 21 sites in southeastern Florida and were frozen, dissected, and swabbed with sterile swabs. Samples from the same site were pooled together and sent to the San Diego Zoo Amphibian Lab for TaqMan PCR to verify the presence of chytrid fungi. Excluding the positive control, the results from the TaqMan PCR returned negative for the presence of either …
In Medical Evidence And Practice, What Level Of Uncertainty Is Acceptable?, Hannah Levine
In Medical Evidence And Practice, What Level Of Uncertainty Is Acceptable?, Hannah Levine
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
This thesis addresses the level of uncertainty in medical evidence and practice and asks if this level is acceptable. Current medical standards consider randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as the best, and most certain, form of evidence. Similarly, medical practice largely relies on differential diagnosis and diagnostic testing to diagnose patients. I will argue that RCTs as well as differential diagnosis and diagnostic testing contribute to uncertainty in medical practice. In the former, uncertainty stems from lack of representation, elimination of confounding factors, among other issues; while in the latter, uncertainty originates from technological limitations, similarity or variability in presentation, and …

Is The Market Surprised By The Surprise?, Khine Kyaw, Mojisola Olugbode, Barbara Petracci
Plymouth Business School
This study examines how the market reacts to earnings surprises with different characteristics such as future earnings prospects and historical surprises embedded in the earnings announced. We also explore the effect of corporate governance on market reaction to earnings information disseminated through earnings announcements. The sample comprises of 1620 US firms for the period 2002–2016. Using a regression-based approach, the results reveal that the market reacts to earnings surprises, particularly, to their sign, magnitude, persistence, and the future earnings prospects. Moreover, these different characteristics of earnings surprises are more important for negative surprises than for positive surprises. Furthermore, we find …

Use Of The Patient Health Questionnaire (Phq-9) In Practice: Interactions Between Patients And Physicians, Joseph Ford, Felicity Thomas, Richard Byng, Rose Mccabe
Peninsula Medical School
We analyze the use of nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), an instrument that is widely used in diagnosing and determining the severity of depression. Using conversation analysis, we show how the doctor deploys the PHQ-9 in response to the patient’s doubts about whether she is depressed. Rather than relaying the PHQ-9 verbatim, the doctor deviates from the wording so that the response options are selectively offered to upgrade the severity of the patient’s symptoms. This works in favor of a positive diagnosis and is used to justify a treatment recommendation that the patient previously resisted. This contrasted with the rest …

IntroductionValue-based healthcare delivery models have emerged to address the unprecedented pressure on long-term health system performance and sustainability and to respond to the changing needs and expectations of patients. Implementing and scaling the benefits from these care delivery models to achieve large-system transformation are challenging and require consideration of complexity and context. Realist studies enable researchers to explore factors beyond ‘what works’ towards more nuanced understanding of ‘what tends to work for whom under which circumstances’. This research proposes a realist study of the implementation approach for seven large-system, value-based healthcare initiatives in New South Wales, Australia, to elucidate how …

Community engagement, defined as the process of getting communities involved in decisions that affect them (NICE, 2008), is paramount to the development and governance of services and activities that promote health and target inequalities (Buck, Baylis, Dougall, & Robertson, 2018; NICE, 2008). The inter-professional engagement module is an integral part of the curriculum of Peninsula Dental School, University of Plymouth, United Kingdom. It enables second-year undergraduate dental and dental therapy and hygiene students to develop and deliver an oral health intervention targeted at disadvantaged groups in the community. These groups commonly experience higher levels of dental disease (Public Health England, …
Inns And Elite Mobility In Late Georgian Britain, Daniel Maudlin
Inns And Elite Mobility In Late Georgian Britain, Daniel Maudlin
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper considers the significance of the spaces and material culture of the ‘principal inn’ as the centre of a distinct world of elite mobility in eighteenth-century Britain. Inns were central to the expansion and improvement of the travel network that brought the British Isles closer together through the long eighteenth century. The turnpike system introduced improved surfaces to old and new roads while new coach-building technology allowed faster movement on those roads. However, it was the national network of inns, regularly and reliably punctuating Britain's roads, that made fast and efficient travel a practical, everyday reality from London to …

Making Time For Food When ‘Doing Time’; How Enhanced Status Prisoners Counter The Indignity Of Prison Foodways, Julie M. Parsons
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
In contemporary neo-liberal societies, forms of responsible individualism and approaches to everyday foodways that reify healthy home-cooked food prepared from scratch, eaten together around a table are imbued with high cultural capital. What are the implications of this for criminalised individuals incarcerated in a prison system in England and Wales, that works with extremely low budgets, makes heavy use of pre-packaged convenience food and serves food to prisoners in their cells? Indeed, findings from Her Majesty's Inspectorate for Prison Report on food (2016:13), claims that ‘the quantity and quality of the food provided [in prison] is insufficient, and the conditions …

AimLower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are a common urological referral, which sometimes can have a neurological basis in a patient with no formally diagnosed neurological disease (“occult neurology”). Early identification and specialist input is needed to avoid bad LUTS outcomes, and to initiate suitable neurological management.MethodsThe International Continence Society established a neurological working group to consider: Which neurological conditions may include LUTS as an early feature? What diagnostic evaluations should be undertaken in the LUTS clinic? A shortlist of conditions was drawn up by expert consensus and discussed at the annual congress of the International Neurourology Society. A multidisciplinary working …
