Control Of Corrosion On Ss316l Using Surface Initiated Polymers, Alexander Rupprecht Dec 2020

Control Of Corrosion On Ss316l Using Surface Initiated Polymers, Alexander Rupprecht

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pitting corrosion is arguably one of the most destructive and dangerous forms of corrosion, resulting in damage to structures, the environment, and public health. In addition, damage caused to structures such as bridges, pipelines, and boats, corrosion also has a profound effect on the biomedical community. Implanted metallic devices (i.e., vascular stents and artificial joints) are prone to pitting corrosion caused by aggressive ions present in extracellular fluid. To provide a corrosion-resistant surface on SS316L, films of poly(styrene), poly(methyl acrylate), and poly(methyl methacrylate) were formed using surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The resulting hydrophobic polymer films had a fractional …

On screen, romantic comedies provide a certain kind of predictability and escape. In real life, the cliches can be unnerving and less promising. But life isn’t always stranger than fiction – when an urbanite writer falls in love with a salt-of-the-earth voracious angler at a fishing tournament, she finds the hopeful cliches are unavoidable. https://francescakrempa.com/capstone/

A Rapid Response Vaccine Development Strategy For Newcastle Disease In Poultry, Sr R. Maremagae, Cc C. Bezuidenhout, Am M. Murphy, Ma A. Jarvis, P Naicker, P. J. Lebea

School of Biomedical Sciences

Poultry is a major source of protein in sub-Saharan Africa and many other lower-income regions. Newcastle disease virus (NCDV) comprises a significant threat toward poultry production. While NCDV vaccines are routinely used in developed countries, those used in sub-Saharan Africa are mostly imported and are not specific to locally circulating strains. Indeed, the lack of rapid, field-based NCDV detection and the absence of cost-effective production methods for pure, strain-specific vaccines hampers efficient poultry production throughout these regions. This remains a major problem for both subsistence and commercial farming. The aim for this study was firstly, to develop a field-based isothermal PCR …

Applied Molecular Dynamics: From Targeting Viral Helicases, To Understanding The Interactions Of Cucurbituril Complexes In Ionic Solutions, Bryan Raubenolt

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Molecular Dynamics simulations are a highly useful tool in helping understand the fundamental interactions present in a variety of chemical systems. The work discussed here illustrates it’s use in determining the conformational dynamics of the Zika and SARS-Cov-2 helicase in a physiological environment, largely in an effort to discover inhibitors capable of rendering the protein inert. Additionally, we show how it can be used to understand paradoxical trends in the anion-induced precipitation of Cucurbituril cavitands.

Viral helicases are motor proteins tasked with unwinding the viral dsRNA, a crucial step in preparing the strand to be translatable by host cells. By …

Numerical Investigation On The Effect Of Surface Perturbations On Aerodynamics Of Cambered Airfoils, Ahmed Elbaz Dec 2020

Numerical Investigation On The Effect Of Surface Perturbations On Aerodynamics Of Cambered Airfoils, Ahmed Elbaz

Mechanical Engineering

The issue of the flow separation and the urge to reach higher performance ratings in airfoils can be acquired through the passive surface modification. By altering the shape of the upper surface to have a perturbated shape using a simple sinusoidal wave, the flow characteristics of airfoils can be enhanced to yield higher desired outputs. This study proposes the effect of both the wave amplitude and the number of waves for the perturbated upper surface on the lift and drag characteristics for SG-6040 and SG-6042 airfoils. Perturbating the upper surface of the airfoil can be of a great advantage as …

Major recording labels have always been king-making investment houses. They market the music and manage the careers of artists such as New York singer-songwriter Blake Morgan, who has to fight tooth and nail to escape being mistreated financially. But digital distribution services have now come along and upped the parasitic ante. By dominating global market share and distributing millions of songs for the labels, companies like Spotify are piggybacking on the music industry’s already exploitative system and magnifying it exponentially. The more content you control, the larger the overall profit–even if the overwhelming majority of content creators are essentially starving. …
