George I. F. Clarke, C. Seton Fleming Dec 2020

George I. F. Clarke, C. Seton Fleming

Florida Historical Quarterly

One of the most interesting characters in the early history of Florida was George I. F. Clarke, an Englishman. He was engineer for the British Government during its possession of Florida and continued this work throughout the succeeding Spanish period and for many years after Florida’s cession to the United States. He is frequently referred to by name and reputation in American State Papers, Public Lands, especially Vol. IV containing the reports of the Land Commissioners appointed by the United States Government to pass upon land claims in Florida. Clarke made many of the surveys of royal grants, and was …

Connecting The Dots And Dashes: Wireless Telegraphy Communication In The Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914–1918, Brian Pascas

Canadian Military History

This article seeks to explain wireless telegraphy (W/T) equipment, its development and use over the course of the First World War and how W/T performed in conjunction with the established landline network. W/T deployment during Canadian Expeditionary Force battles is evaluated to determine whether W/T was viewed as an alternative battlefield communication medium or simply as a standby for emergency situations. The analysis discloses that the Canadian infantry was unable to take advantage of continuous wave, a superior form of wireless that the artillery relied upon. This article contends that by war’s end W/T had become a viable substitute for …

Between Fact And Fiction: The 26th Battalion, The “Crater Fight,” And The “Myth Of The War Experience”, Curt Mainville

Canadian Military History

In October 1915, during only their second tour of the front line, New Brunswick’s 26th Battalion conducted a reconnaissance-in-force upon a recently detonated German mine in front of their firing trench. The “crater fight,” as it has come to be known, resulted in twenty-one dead and thirty-six wounded but was portrayed as a success. But how much of what was printed in local newspapers was true? Official reports and personal accounts were engaging, idealistic and emotive. They were also highly exaggerated. This was the genesis of the “myth of the war experience”—a marriage of both fact and fiction that reflected …

Has Neofunctionalization Through Promoter Element Differentiation Driven Drought-Adaptation In Artemisia Tridentata?, Walker Morales, Jim Beck, Anthony Melton, Sven Buerki

VIP 2020

Artemisia tridentata is an ecologically important shrub in dry habitats of western North America. This species has a large, complex genome due to an evolutionary history with hybridization and whole genome duplications. Aquaporins are an important family of genes that function in water transport. We hypothesize that whole genome duplications in Artemisia tridentata may have allowed for neofunctionalization of Aquaporin genes, allowing for greater drought adaptation. To test this hypothesis, aquaporins in the Artemisia tridentata and Artemisia annua genomes were identified via a BLAST search. Afterward, the upstream promoters were obtained and categorized by categories obtained from a PCA based …

Brazil, Big Hydro, And A Beautiful Monster: “Green” Energy Generation In The Xingu River Basin, Ian F. Hirons

Student Works

Brazil is quickly becoming an influential actor on the world stage of geopolitics. The nation has achieved global economic and environmental recognition due to the extensive development of its hydrological resources in the form of hydroelectric power plants. As the world’s second greatest generator of hydroelectricity, Brazil has proven a staunch adherence to building dams in the large-scale. Though these dams have brought electricity to millions of people across the country, the socio-ecological toll inflicted by their construction has been devastating to natural biomes and local inhabitants. This article traces Brazil’s proclivity for large-scale hydropower to four motivational categories often …

Array Modeling And Testing Of Fixed Owc Type Wave Energy Converters, Bret Bosma, Ted Brekken, Pedro Lomonaco, Bryony Dupont, Chris Sharp, Belinda Batten

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

If wave energy technology is to mature to commercial success, array optimization could play a key role in that process. This paper outlines physical and numerical modeling of an array of five oscillating water column wave energy converters. Numerical model simulations are compared with experimental tank test data for a non-optimal and optimal array layout. Results show a max increase of 12% in average power for regular waves, and 7% for irregular waves between the non-optimized and optimized layouts. The numerical model matches well under many conditions; however, improvement is needed to adjust for phase errors. This paper outlines the …

Train The Brain Using Virtual Reality Aromatherapy To Detect Memory Loss Diseases, Shannon Crain, Neale Ellyson, Beatrice Dayrit, John Bieter, Peter Müllner

VIP 2020

What comes to mind when you think of baking homemade bread, or hugging a family member, or climbing the tree outside your childhood home? These memories often come with a smell that help bring that memory into focus.

Those with memory loss diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia often demonstrate a difficulty in recognizing scents in addition to their memory loss symptoms. The connection between the olfactory system and the hippocampus, where degeneration due to the disease occurs, is being explored. The aim is to be able to provide a biomarker for diagnosis and a therapy to train the …

Capitalisms, Generative Projects And The New Sts, Kelly Moore Dec 2020

Capitalisms, Generative Projects And The New Sts, Kelly Moore

Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Mainstream science studies has long marginalized the intersection of capitalisms and technoscience, instead placing interactionist, liberal, and Foucaultian analysis at its forefront, and has had little to say about scientists as critics of the capitalizations of knowledge. Yet at the interstices of the field, scientists, decolonial, feminist, and critical race scholars were engaging capitalisms in ways that rejected conventional Marxism. Some of the roots of these analyses were visible in the journal Science for the People (SftP) revived in 2019, after thirty years of dormancy. Newer journals, including Tapuya, Catalyst, and East Asian Science, Technology and Society are …

Entrainment Processes For A Jet In Cross-Flow: The Quantification Of Turbulent Contributions And Their Importance On Accurate Modeling, Graham Asher Freedland Dec 2020

Entrainment Processes For A Jet In Cross-Flow: The Quantification Of Turbulent Contributions And Their Importance On Accurate Modeling, Graham Asher Freedland

Dissertations and Theses

A jet in cross flow (JICF) is examined experimentally by injecting a stream of air into crossing fluid with an aim into quantifying entrainment process and downstream evolution. The behavior of JICF is important to fields ranging from turbine-blade cooling to smokestack pollution and volcanic eruption dynamics. Existing simplified volcanic plume models are tested; most importantly, the near-field contributions of complex interconnected vortex systems, which present significant uncertainties because they assume negligible turbulence. While jets in irrotational cross-flow have been investigated, this analysis has focused on the interaction between a turbulent jet in low and highly turbulent cross-flow created by …

Activation Of The Archaeal Ion Channel Mthk Is Exquisitely Regulated By Temperature, Yihao Jiang, Vinay Idikuda, Sandipan Chowdhury, Baron Chanda

Open Access Publications

Physiological response to thermal stimuli in mammals is mediated by a structurally diverse class of ion channels, many of which exhibit polymodal behavior. To probe the diversity of biophysical mechanisms of temperature-sensitivity, we characterized the temperature-dependent activation of MthK, a two transmembrane calcium-activated potassium channel from thermophilic archaebacteria. Our functional complementation studies show that these channels are more efficient at rescuing K

More Faculty of Science and Engineering Research

AbstractAvailable analytical methods cannot detect nanoplastics at environmentally realistic concentrations in complex matrices such as biological tissues. Here, we describe a one-step polymerization method, allowing direct radiolabeling of a sulfonate end-capped nano-sized polystyrene (nPS; proposed as a model nanoplastic particle representing negatively charged nanoplastics). The method, which produces nanoplastics trackable in simulated environmental settings which have already been used to investigate the behavior of a nanoplastic in vivo in a bivalve mollusc, was developed, optimized and successfully applied to synthesis of 14C-labeled nPS of different sizes. In addition to a description of the method of synthesis, we describe the details …

Suffix Tree, Minwise Hashing And Streaming Algorithms For Big Data Analysis In Bioinformatics, Sairam Behera Dec 2020

Suffix Tree, Minwise Hashing And Streaming Algorithms For Big Data Analysis In Bioinformatics, Sairam Behera

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this dissertation, we worked on several algorithmic problems in bioinformatics using mainly three approaches: (a) a streaming model, (b) sux-tree based indexing, and (c) minwise-hashing (minhash) and locality-sensitive hashing (LSH). The streaming models are useful for large data problems where a good approximation needs to be achieved with limited space usage. We developed an approximation algorithm (Kmer-Estimate) using the streaming approach to obtain a better estimation of the frequency of k-mer counts. A k-mer, a subsequence of length k, plays an important role in many bioinformatics analyses such as genome distance estimation. We also developed new methods that use …

Scenario Analysis Of Downtown One-Way Street Conversions In Lincoln, Nebraska, A Case Study For Downtown Livability And Pedestrian Safety, Terrence Lage

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

An era of downtown street design benefiting the automobile has become over designed for the movement of volumes of traffic in many North American cities. Since the 1950s, the primary focus of planners and traffic engineers has been to address the growing problem of traffic congestion caused by the suburban traveler coming into and out of downtown. The solution was retrofitting the original two-way street grid into a network of wide and straight multi-lane one-way corridors. This design successfully moved volumes of traffic through downtown streets but induced behavior to favor the automobile instead of design that favors active mobility …

Disability Discrimination In Higher Education: The Enabling Spirit Of American Disability Legislation In Conflict With Judicial Interpretation, Travis Murray Dec 2020

Disability Discrimination In Higher Education: The Enabling Spirit Of American Disability Legislation In Conflict With Judicial Interpretation, Travis Murray

Student Scholarship

Disabled individuals have historically been treated as second-class citizens in the United States. While improvements have certainly been made over time, disabled individuals still face significant barriers to enjoying full and equal participation in society. Higher education is one aspect of American society still lacking proportional representation of the disabled community. To try and understand why disabled Americans fail to thrive in higher education at rates approaching those of non-disabled individuals, this paper will examine the following: how the history of disability discrimination in America influenced passage of powerful anti-discrimination legislation; how American courts have generally interpreted that legislation to …

Mechanics, Energetics And Implementation Of Grounded Running Technique: A Narrative Review, Sheeba Davis, Aaron Fox, Jason Bonacci, Fiddy Davis

Open Access archive

Grounded running predominantly differs from traditional aerial running by having alternating single and double stance with no flight phase. Approximately, 16% of runners in an open marathon and 33% of recreational runners in a 5 km running event adopted a grounded running technique. Grounded running typically occurs at a speed range of 2-3 m·s-1, is characterised by a larger duty factor, reduced vertical leg stiffness, lower vertical oscillation of the centre of mass (COM) and greater impact attenuation than aerial running. Grounded running typically induces an acute increase in metabolic cost, likely due to the larger duty factor. The increased …

Identification Of Degradation Products Formed From Glycerol And Terpenes In Aromatherapy Vaporizers, Alisha Ortiz Dec 2020

Identification Of Degradation Products Formed From Glycerol And Terpenes In Aromatherapy Vaporizers, Alisha Ortiz

University Honors Theses

Degradation chemistry has been widely studied to assess the safety of aerosols in many fields. The study herein investigates the degradation products formed from MONQ personal aromatherapy devices- a new non-nicotine aromatherapy vape pen device on the market. These pens are marketed to alleviate symptoms of an unrecognized medical syndrome called “terpene deficiency”. These pens contain a glycerin (GL), or glycerol (VG), base and a blend of terpene-rich essential oils. Previous studies have investigated the degradation of both VG and terpenes and have shown that concerning compounds are released in the gas phase, including benzene, benzaldehyde, methacrolein and methyl vinyl …

Genetic And Epigenetic Determinants Of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, Tanner Bakhshi, Philippe T. Georgel Dec 2020

Genetic And Epigenetic Determinants Of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma, Tanner Bakhshi, Philippe T. Georgel

Biomedical Sciences

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of lymphoma and is notorious for its heterogeneity, aggressive nature, and the frequent development of resistance and/or relapse after treatment with standard chemotherapy. To address these problems, a strong emphasis has been placed on researching the molecular origins and mechanisms of DLBCL to develop effective treatments. One of the major insights produced by such research is that DLBCL almost always stems from genetic damage that occurs during the germinal center (GC) reaction, which is required for the production of high-affinity antibodies. Indeed, there is significant overlap between the mechanisms that …

You Are Academia, Jason Faust Dec 2020

You Are Academia, Jason Faust

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Jason Faust’s You Are Academia presents the modern landscape of academia as a passive system of exponential growth. The core gameplay mechanic suggests that the fundamental purpose of current higher learning structures is meant to improve revenue and the quantity of works produced—not necessarily the quality of student education. This is a work of overt satire and takes roughly 20 minutes to complete.
