Gender Is Critical To Understanding How Egalitarianism Works, Ivan Tacey, Camilla Power, Jerome Lewis, Ian Watts, Chris Knight, Morna Finnegan
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
The plural processes underlying egalitarianism should be gendered adequately, with women seen as drivers and innovators from an evolutionary perspective. We apply this across all six processes enumerated by Stibbard Hawkes & von Rueden and advocate ritual as a seventh core process, the engine of reverse dominance.
Could 'Real Existing Ai' Be Sentient?, Tim Crane
Could 'Real Existing Ai' Be Sentient?, Tim Crane
Animal Sentience
Jonathan Birch is rightly sceptical about the idea that today’s AI machines (e.g. LLMs) are candidates for sentience. Nonetheless, he gives three reasons for taking the future possibility of AI sentience seriously. I dispute them all. Birch fails to distinguish the very idea of an artificial mind from computational AI (what I call ‘Real Existing AI’); he does not adequately distinguish a simulation from a replica or copy; and he fails to acknowledge that the appeal to computational functionalism in this context is straightforwardly question-begging.
Impact Of Corporate Governance On Achieving Desired Corporate Hedging Outcomes, Shweta Chitalia
Impact Of Corporate Governance On Achieving Desired Corporate Hedging Outcomes, Shweta Chitalia
Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses
Corporate derivative hedging is intended to manage financial exposures, stabilize cash flows, and support organizational risk-management objectives; however, limited public evidence exists regarding how governance structures influence hedge evaluation, approval, and timely execution. This qualitative descriptive study examined how corporate governance was publicly described in relation to derivative hedging among large U.S. nonfinancial corporations. The study analyzed one publicly available Form 10-K filing from each of 25 purposively selected S&P 500 nonfinancial firms reporting active derivative hedging programs. Data were collected from SEC filings and organized in an Excel-based audit trail containing a document log, excerpt-level coding records, codebook, firm …

SUMMARY: A growing number of tools enable the analysis of large variant libraries produced by multiplexed assays of variant effects (MAVEs). Experiments using fluorescent reporters and fluorescence-activated cell sorting sequencing (FACS-seq or Sort-seq) can coarsely quantify a given variant's impact on phenotypes such as transcription activity. Existing bioinformatics tools for Sort-seq data broadly fall into two categories: methods that model a genotype-phenotype landscape to infer latent variant phenotypes, and methods that directly estimate individual variant scores from experimental binned counts. Within this second category, sortscore provides an activity score computed directly from observed counts without fitting a model, retaining the …
What War Games Actually Teach: Threat Recognition, Not Prediction, Charles Edward Gehrke
What War Games Actually Teach: Threat Recognition, Not Prediction, Charles Edward Gehrke
Naval War College Press Preprints
Despite long-standing in-house and public interest in USN war gaming, new technologies and geopolitical realities have left the practice in waters of unknown depth and contours. Finding a way forward will require leaving behind the fog of unvarnished praise and criticism and answering the following question: What benefit do war games actually deliver?

MOTIVATION: Reconstructing tissue-specific transcription factor (TF) networks remains challenging. TF-motif-based methods often lack functional validation, while expression-based methods struggle to distinguish direct binding from indirect regulation. Integration of diverse data types is necessary to accurately prioritize likely functional targets directly bound by TFs across human tissues.
RESULTS: We introduce METANet (Motif Expression TF Association Networks), a supervised ensemble learning framework that combines TF motifs, cis-regulatory element activity, and linear and nonlinear expression-derived features to predict TF binding. Applied to 36 human tissues, predicted METANet maps significantly outperform established methods in identifying direct, likely functional targets of TFs validated by ChIP-seq …
Project Management Frameworks For The Responsible Integration Of Ai In Luxury Interior Design And Ff&E Practice, Jade Alfstad Hachem
Project Management Frameworks For The Responsible Integration Of Ai In Luxury Interior Design And Ff&E Practice, Jade Alfstad Hachem
Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses
The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into luxury interior design and furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) practice has outpaced the governance structures needed to protect creative authorship, craft traditions, and cultural intelligence. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine how project management frameworks could govern the responsible integration of AI in luxury interior design and FF&E specification. The study was grounded in the Adopt a Holistic View principle of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Guide, Eighth Edition, and addressed three research questions on governance frameworks, tensions between technology and handcraft, and art historical literacy. …

Carbaryl (1-naphthyl methylcarbamate) is a carbamate pesticide used to cause adverse environmental and health effects when misused through water contamination. Therefore, this research aimed to develop a direct electrochemical detection method for carbaryl in aqueous media using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. In this context, BDD electrodes exhibited superior electrochemical performance compared to conventional materials such as gold (Au), platinum (Pt), and glassy carbon electrodes (GCE) due to a wide potential window, low background current, and excellent chemical stability. Cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry reported a well-defined oxidation peak for carbaryl at 1.30 V, with significantly enhanced sensitivity. The results showed …
Impact Of Employment Status And Housing Stability On Tuberculosis Treatment Adherence In Virginia, Samuel Deapeh Worgee
Impact Of Employment Status And Housing Stability On Tuberculosis Treatment Adherence In Virginia, Samuel Deapeh Worgee
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Tuberculosis (TB) cases have resurged in Virginia, yet the structural determinants shaping treatment completion among socioeconomically marginalized populations remain unquantified locally, leaving public health programs without state-specific predictive evidence. Grounded in the World Health Organization's social determinants of health framework, this quantitative, ex post facto study examined how employment status, housing stability, and social risk factors predicted TB treatment completion. De-identified surveillance records for N = 898 adult TB cases reported from 2020 through 2024 were extracted from the Virginia Electronic Disease Surveillance System and analyzed using a multivariable binary logistic regression, controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity, and radiographic severity …
Tech Oligarchs And Corporate Vigilantism, Joao Marinotti, Asaf Lubin
Tech Oligarchs And Corporate Vigilantism, Joao Marinotti, Asaf Lubin
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Big Tech’s unchecked power has evolved from a regulatory crisis into one concerning the rule of law itself. Shielded by the First Amendment, Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act, corporate law, and contract law, technology giants have circumvented traditional government oversight, amassing a level of power that eclipses even that of some sovereign states. No longer guided by cautious boards of directors, today’s tech empires are often ruled by impulsive billionaire CEOs, who, through a single policy change or algorithmic tweak, can upend individual rights, destabilize global markets, and erode democratic governance itself.
The scale of such dangers …
Nature Or Nurture? A Study Of Stem Identity In Rural Middle Schools, Elizabeth Earle Browne
Nature Or Nurture? A Study Of Stem Identity In Rural Middle Schools, Elizabeth Earle Browne
College of Education
Underrepresentation of historically marginalized students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) continues to be an issue, particularly in under-resourced, rural communities such as Alabama’s Black Belt. This mixed-methods study examined factors influencing STEM identity among rural middle school students and the relationship between STEM identity and interest in participating in future STEM electives. Grounded in social identity theory, the study explored demographic influences on STEM identity and students’ perceptions of who belongs in STEM. The quantitative phase utilized a modified STEM Identity Survey to collect responses from 145 students across four rural Alabama middle schools. Data were analyzed using …

Abstract
This article delves into the concept of digital universe as a transforming digital system for the preservation of African culture, with a target on the unique role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a means of storytelling and cultural continuity. For long, there have been problems of availability of sustainable digital infrastructure where African storytelling can be preserved. This study therefore examines the intersection of AI and African storytelling through emerging digital projects, virtual storytelling spaces, and tools that digitize and translate African languages and oral traditions. It argues that AI not only expands the reach of African cultural narratives, …
