From Esl To Eal: Moving From A Deficit Framework To An Asset Framework, Karen Bordonaro
Journal of English Learner Education
This article describes a self-directed autoethnographic research study of how the author moved from a deficit to an asset perspective in working with non-native speakers of English. Reframing this perspective took place by investigating how the author’s lived experiences as an ESL instructor intersected with the learning theories of language learner autonomy, plurilingualism, and internationalization at home to create positive flashpoints. These flashpoints included offering choices, marking learner success, and embedding cultural information into domestic settings. By engaging in these reflections, a widened perspective of moving from English as a second language to English as an additional language was reached. …

Automatic retrieval of data from the Web (often referred to as Web Scraping) for industry and academic research projects is becoming a common practice. A variety of tools and technologies have been developed to facilitate Web Scraping. Unfortunately, the legality and ethics of using these tools for collecting data are often overlooked. Beyond Mechanical Markets: Asset Price Swings, Risk, And The Role Of The State (Book Review), Adrian Ravier
Beyond Mechanical Markets: Asset Price Swings, Risk, And The Role Of The State (Book Review), Adrian Ravier
Journal of New Finance
In its opening section, Frydman and Goldberg’s book lays out important methodological contributions questioning the hypothesis of rational expectations, constructed on the basis of the writings of Knight, Keynes and Hayek. But in the second part, it does not propose a convincing model that would help avoid the formation of new financial bubbles. While accepting to some extent that the government entity has no greater knowledge than economic agents, it ignores the perverse public-sector incentives that James M. Buchanan and the School of Public Choice have explored in recent decades. Furthermore, although the repeated reference to Hayek is encouraging, the …

The Structure Of Production And Endogenous And Exogenous Liquidity Of Financial Intermediaries, Daniel Fernández
Journal of New Finance
Banks directly manage their own liquidity. Banks also indirectly manage the liquidity of the entire economic system. In this article we discuss the relationship between endogenous and exogenous bank liquidity, and their corresponding relationship to the structure of production. We explore these liquidity relationships in the context of both a decentralized and centralized system of free banking, comparing both with the monopoly regime of central banks, “convertible and inconvertible liabilities. We analyze the incentives that engender a liquid “system in the context of free banking as well as the perversion of those same incentives in the context of central banking, …

Baldia Town Factory Inferno: Justice Delayed And Denied, Rabia Bugti
MSJ Capstone Projects
The Baldia Town Factory Fire — as it came to be known — was one of the deadliest incidents in the history of Pakistan — the 9/11 of the country.
Over 260 ill-fated people lost their lives in the garments factory named Ali Enterprises, 16 of whom were charred beyond recognition. In September this year, finally after eight years, the anti-terrorism court announced its verdict (ANTI-TERRORISM COURT, 2017). Two key culprits were sentenced to death and four handed life imprisonment. According to the joint investigation team’s report, the factory was set on fire deliberately by the facilitators of a political …
