Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Regional alterations in kinetics of catecholamine uptake are due in part to variations in clearance mechanisms. The rate of clearance is a critical determinant of the strength of catecholamine signaling. Catecholamine transmission in the nucleus accumbens core (NAcc) and basolateral amygdala (BLA) is of particular interest due to involvement of these regions in cognition and motivation. Previous work has shown that catecholamine clearance in the NAcc is largely mediated by the dopamine transporter (DAT), but clearance in the BLA is less DAT‐dependent. A growing body of literature suggests that organic cation transporter 3 (OCT3) also contributes to catecholamine clearance in …
Divine Command Theory And Psychopathy, Erik J. Wielenberg
Divine Command Theory And Psychopathy, Erik J. Wielenberg
Philosophy Faculty publications
I advance a novel challenge for Divine Command Theory based on the existence of psychopaths. The challenge, in a nutshell, is that Divine Command Theory has the implausible implication that psychopaths have no moral obligations and hence their evil acts, no matter how evil, are morally permissible. After explaining this argument, I respond to three objections to it and then critically examine the prospect that Divine Command Theorists might bite the bullet and accept that psychopaths can do no wrong. I conclude that the Psychopathy Objection constitutes a serious and novel challenge for Divine Command Theory.

Martial Law in 1972 has always been a crucial part of Philippine history and it is important for Filipinos to learn and understand what happened during that period and how military rule made an impact on the country. People have different views of Martial Law; even students of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, who are expected to be critical of social issues, also have different perceptions. This research is an attempt to make young Filipinos know about the effects of Martial Law and to help protect the young minds from historical revisionism. This research aims to present the …
International Tax Competition And Foreign Direct Investment In The Asia-Pacific Region: A Panel Data Analysis, Chengwei Xu, Alfred M. Wu
International Tax Competition And Foreign Direct Investment In The Asia-Pacific Region: A Panel Data Analysis, Chengwei Xu, Alfred M. Wu
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate how a country's competitive tax policy influences its inward foreign direct investments (FDI) in the Asia–Pacific region, even when given particular constraints (e.g., population, public governance, skilled labor, and so on) exist. Design/methodology/approach: The paper uses the system GMM estimation approach to test the hypothesis. Data on FDI, corporate income tax, and various confounding factors were drawn from Ernst and Young's worldwide corporate tax guide, the World Bank, and other sources to create a panel of 28 economies over the period 2000–2016. Findings: The present research confirms the negative association between …
Contracting And Reporting Conservatism Around A Change In Fiduciary Duties, Daniel Bens, Sterling Huang, Liang Tan, Wan Wongsumwai
Contracting And Reporting Conservatism Around A Change In Fiduciary Duties, Daniel Bens, Sterling Huang, Liang Tan, Wan Wongsumwai
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
We exploit an influential 1991 Delaware court ruling to examine the impact of changes in managerial fiduciary duties on firms’ accounting and contracting choices. The ruling expanded directors’ fiduciary duties in favor of creditors and away from shareholders for a specific group of firms. Using a hand-collected sample of debt contracts around the ruling date, we find that, following the ruling, debt contracts of affected firms rely less on the use of income escalators (provisions in loan contracts which require changes in net worth to reflect losses in full, but only partially for gains and profits) and other conservative adjustments …
Toward Understanding Underlying Mechanisms Of Drag Reduction In Turbulent Flow Control, Alex Rogge
Toward Understanding Underlying Mechanisms Of Drag Reduction In Turbulent Flow Control, Alex Rogge
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The underlying mechanisms of three different flow-control strategies on drag reduction in a turbulent channel flow are investigated by direct numerical simulations. These strategies include the addition of a small concentration of long-chain polymers into a fluid, the incorporation of slip surfaces, and the application of an external body force. While it has been believed that such methods lead to a skin-friction reduction by controlling near-wall flow structures, the underlying mechanisms at play are still not as clear. In this study, a temporal analysis is employed to elucidate underlying drag-reduction mechanisms among these methods. The analysis is based on the …
Multilayered Transmission Lines, Antennas And Phased Arrays With Structurally Integrated Control Electronics Using Additive Manufacturing, Merve Kacar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents high-performance transmission lines, antennas, and phased arrays with novel packaging techniques by harnessing design flexibilities of additive manufacturing (AM). AM enables realizing multilayered RF electronics with complex geometrical structures that are not practical using conventional fabrication methods. Design flexibilities offered by AM as customized dielectric shapes/thicknesses, dielectric properties, metallization on conformal surfaces, and structural packaging are harnessed for multilayered RF applications. Although several works demonstrated the viability of AM for antenna realizations, its capability for addressing the needs of wideband, high radiation efficiency antenna systems packaged with active RF circuit components remains relatively unexplored. The first major …

Adrienne Johns had experience riding motorcycles for over 20 years when in 2013, total failure of the front brake on his 2006 Suzuki GSX-R1000 caused him to hit a curb, throwing him from his bike and knocking him unconscious. The accident resulted in Johns being hospitalized for over two months following spinal fusion surgery and surgery to repair his hand. Subsequent to the accident, he discovered that there had been a recall notice from Suzuki related to his bike model’s front brake. At trial, Johns proved that a design defect in the front brake had ultimately caused the brake to …

A Bleak House: The Story Behind The Oldest Legal Controversy In The State Of Georgia, Clayton T. Kendrick
Mercer Law Review
Bleak Houseis a novel written by Charles Dickens, which centers around the fictional English Court of Chancery case Jarndyce and Jarndyce. The fictional case concerns a dispute surrounding a large inheritance that drags on for several generations. As Dickens put it,
Jarndyce and Jarndyce drones on . . . . Innumerable children have been born into the cause; innumerable young people have married into it; innumerable old people have died out of it . . . . The little plaintiff or defendant, who was promised a new rocking-horse when Jarndyce and Jarndyce should be settled, has grown up, possessed himself …
Substitutes, Complements, And Irritants: Garza V Lappin And The Role Of International Law In Us Courts, Tom Ginsburg
Substitutes, Complements, And Irritants: Garza V Lappin And The Role Of International Law In Us Courts, Tom Ginsburg
University of Chicago Law Review
What is the relationship between US law and international law? This is the core question of the academic field of foreign relations law, but it is also a life-or-death issue for some people. In recent years, a series of cases involving death-row defendants has made its way to the federal courts, presenting a novel set of claims. This Essay discusses one such case, Garza v Lappin,1 decided in 2001. The opinion by Judge Diane Wood is characteristically scrupulous, but is not among her best known, and was hardly controversial at the time.2 Still, it is a useful case …

Swanson V Citibank And The 1l Canon, William H.J. Hubbard
University of Chicago Law Review
Part of what’s special about teaching 1Ls is that 1L year initiates law students into the community of lawyers. This community not only shares a common set of professional commitments and qualifications. Thanks to their 1L courses, lawyers share familiarity with a pantheon of famous cases that have been taught for decades. These canonical cases connect the law school experiences of generations of lawyers.
Civil procedure has its share of these classics. Virtually every first-year law student learns the Strawbridge rule for federal diversity jurisdiction.1 International Shoe is part of every 1L’s vocabulary.2 And no law student who …

The Double Movement Of National Origin Discrimination, Aziz Huq
University of Chicago Law Review
Jose Figueroa’s case presented “little out of the ordinary” for the federal courts1. His was a “multimillion-dollar” drug operation run out of Wisconsin that fell apart when a dealer and a partner flipped and gave testimony for the government.2 Only in the closing moments of sentencing 3 did Figueroa’s case take an unusual turn, one that would in due course elicit an unusual opinion from Judge Diane Wood of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. In the process of assigning Figueroa to the “low end of Figueroa’s advisory guidelines range,” 4 District Court Judge Rudolph T. Randa …

Data Security’S Unjust Enrichment Theory, Lior Jacob Strahilevitz
University of Chicago Law Review
Remijas v Neiman Marcus Group, LLC,1 is Judge Diane Wood’s most famous data security opinion, and for good reason. The opinion is elegantly written and refreshingly pragmatic with respect to an issue that has prompted other courts to fall into the trap of empty formalism. Yet the opinion is not perfect, and this Essay celebrating Wood’s silver anniversary on the bench will argue that it missed an opportunity to solve a vexing and important problem that arises when data breach suits are brought in federal court.

Theorizing Developmental Regionalism In Narratives Of African Regional Trade Agreement, Olabisi D. Akinkugbe
Theorizing Developmental Regionalism In Narratives Of African Regional Trade Agreement, Olabisi D. Akinkugbe
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
There is a gap in the legal scholarship on African regional trade agreements (RTAs) that links law and development to narratives of developmental regionalism. This article undertakes a critical analysis of the ‘developmental regionalism’ paradigm as they have been applied in the study of African RTAs. The article identifies three areas of critical intervention to address the incoherence of developmental regionalism in Africa: limitation in theory; narrow conceptualization; and an insufficient attention to the role of law. First, to address the gap in theorizing the ‘development’ in developmental regionalism, this article makes the case for an explicit linking of Law …
Nurses' Attitudes Toward Physician-Assisted Suicide, Cheyenne Star Lowrey-Lagrone
Nurses' Attitudes Toward Physician-Assisted Suicide, Cheyenne Star Lowrey-Lagrone
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Physician-assisted suicide, or PAS, is end-of-life option in which patients self-administer physician-prescribed lethal medication to end their life. Nurses' own interpretations and understandings of the legalities, ethical dilemmas, and factors that influence their attitudes can be analyzed to determine the nurses’ role in the support or opposition of the practice. Although nurses do not have an active role in PAS, they play a pivotal role in patient advocacy and education. This paper analyzes the factors that contribute to nurses’ attitudes toward the practice, along with the benefits of education of this topic going forth.

Review: Influence Of Meteorological Conditions And Algal Community Composition On Hypolimnetic Hypoxia, Ian P. Stone
Honors Projects
Hypoxia has been a central focus of research regarding water quality impairments throughout the world in the past century. The fresh and coastal marine waters affected by hypoxia are of great importance due to the ecosystem services and species habitat they provide, and because of the regional economic activity spurned by these waters in return. As such, a great deal of research effort has been devoted to elucidating the causes and ecological effects of hypoxia with the hopes of remediating the issue. The bulk of this effort has been directed at the role of anthropogenic allochthonous nutrient loading and algal …
Resisting Hyper-Partisan Silencing: Arendt On Political Persuasion Through Exemplification And Truth-Telling As Action, Andrew D. Spear
Resisting Hyper-Partisan Silencing: Arendt On Political Persuasion Through Exemplification And Truth-Telling As Action, Andrew D. Spear
Articles, Book Chapters, Essays
A central frustration of recent political discourse is the consistent reduction of politically relevant factual and critical speech to mere expression of partisan commitment. Partisans of “the other side”—members of the other tribe—are viewed as de facto wrong, because partisans, even when their speech invokes mere facts or purportedly shared political principles. Ideally, democratic political discourse operates along at least two central dimensions: a dimension of shared factual, historical, and political assumptions, and a more contested dimension of interpretation, prioritization, and evaluation that results in diverse and often competing understandings of what is good, and so of what is best …
Kant’S Foedus Pacificum: Path To Peace Or Prolegomena To Neoliberalism And Authoritarian Corporatist Globalization In Contemporary Liberal Democratic States?, Terence Garrett
Political Science Faculty Publications
Immanuel Kant’s language and concept of foedus pacificum (league of peace) combined with his call for a spirit of trade promised a prescription for world peace—“seeking to end all wars forever.” Nation-state level cooperation between liberal democracies has borne out Kant’s analysis to some effect. A consequence of the twin pursuits of foedus pacificum and spirit of trade has ironically resulted in the exploitation of society. Today’s international corporations adversely affect public policies ostensibly designed to protect citizens through an anti-democratic market-based ideology within the State—as seen through the lenses of Foucauldian post-structural theory and Debord’s society of the spectacle. …
Eager To Follow: Methodological Precedent In Statutory Interpretation, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
Eager To Follow: Methodological Precedent In Statutory Interpretation, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl
Faculty Publications
An important recent development in the field of statutory interpretation is the emergence of a movement calling for "methodological precedent"--a regime under which courts give precedential effect to interpretive methodology. In such a system, a case would establish not only what a particular statute means but could also establish binding rules of methodology--which tools are valid, in what order, and so on. The movement for methodological precedent has attracted sharp criticism on normative grounds. But both sides of the normative debate agree on the premise that the federal courts generally do not give precedential effect to interpretive methodology today.

Detection Of Delaminations In Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers Embedded With Terfenol-D Particles Using Machine Learning, Christopher Nelon
Detection Of Delaminations In Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers Embedded With Terfenol-D Particles Using Machine Learning, Christopher Nelon
All Theses
The characterization of the damage state of a system provides insight into its performance and safety during operation. In composite materials, specifically, fiber-reinforced polymers, delaminations form from the evolution of cracks in a matrix that leads to adhesion failure between adjacent laminae. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) seeks to characterize the state of a material or system during non-operational times. A previously proposed NDE method employs embedded magnetostrictive particles between laminae of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) for damage sensing. The phenomenon of magnetostriction couples the mechanical state of a material with its magnetic state so that a change in the local …

Linear Quantile Mixed Modeling: A Study Of The 'Lqmm' Package In R, Thomas Charles Demarco
All Theses
Linear quantile mixed modeling is a diverse statistical tool that can replace traditional least squares modeling for analyzing data whose sampling method has some form of clustering and whose response has trends that differ for each quantile level. In this article, we will evaluate the effectiveness of this modeling method through the use of the lqmm package in R[2]. Simulations and n applied data analysis will be performed to evaluate the performance of the lqmm() function on different types of datasets. We will also introduce background on quantile based mixed modeling and give descriptions of the output and main commands …

Capacitance Stability Of Polymer Tantalum Capacitors Under Different Environmental Conditions, Eyob Negussie Tarekegn
All Theses
Polymer Hermetic Sealed (PHS) Tantalum capacitors with pre-polymerized PEDOT cathodes and different dielectric thicknesses were used to study the stability of Polymer Tantalum capacitors under different environmental conditions. In particular, capacitance dependence on temperature, frequency, and dc bias voltage were studied in humid and dry capacitors with varying dielectric thicknesses. Capacitance and ESR measurements were performed to characterize the capacitors.Humid capacitors were observed to have higher capacitance than dry capacitors for all dielectric thicknesses. The capacitance for all dielectric thicknesses was observed to increase with temperature in both humid and dry capacitors. Humid capacitors showed a stronger temperature dependence at …
