An Umbrella Of Autonomy: The Validity Of The Hong Kong Protests, Ciera Lehmann Dec 2020

An Umbrella Of Autonomy: The Validity Of The Hong Kong Protests, Ciera Lehmann

Senior Honors Theses

Hong Kong has been fighting for democracy and to retain its autonomy from China, and the world has been watching. Over time, Hong Kongers have seen Beijing blatantly tighten its grip before time was up for the fifty-year agreement since the handover in 1997. In 2014, and again in 2019, hundreds of thousands of citizens filled the streets to participate in pro-democracy demonstrations with the protests only gaining momentum and influence. While there has mostly been support for Hong Kong’s independence movement, there has been argument that Beijing’s actions are completely justified. Should Hong Kong remain autonomous from China, and …

Aspen Soils Retain More Dissolved Organic Carbon Than Conifer Soils In A Sorption Experiment, Antra Boča, Astrid R. Jacobson, Helga Van Miegroet Dec 2020

Aspen Soils Retain More Dissolved Organic Carbon Than Conifer Soils In A Sorption Experiment, Antra Boča, Astrid R. Jacobson, Helga Van Miegroet

Aspen Bibliography

The effect tree species have on soil organic carbon (SOC) has been hotly debated but, so far, few clear patterns have emerged. One example of a differing tree species effect on SOC are aspen forests in North America, which have been found to have more stable SOC than adjacent conifer forest stands. An important source for the formation of stable organo-mineral complexes in soil is dissolved organic carbon (DOC). DOC concentrations in mineral soil are often higher under the thick O-horizons of conifer forests than under aspen forests, but this does not correspond to more stable mineral SOC. This suggests …

Silverwing Dev. V. Nev. State Contractors Bd., 136 Nev. Adv. Op. 74 (Dec. 3, 2020), Yoosun Jun

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

Nevada State Contractors Board filed a complaint against Silverwing Development’s multiple contracts entered for a project claiming the total contracted amount for the project exceeded Silverwing’s monetary license limit in violation of NRS 624.220(2). NRS 624.220(2) limits the monetary license amount a contractor can bid on “one or more construction contracts on a single construction site or subdivision site for a single client.” The Board fined Silverwing $1,000 per violation, and Silverwing petitioned for judicial review. The district court denied Silverwing’s petition, and Silverwing appealed. Silverwing argued the term “subdivision site” in the statute is not unconstitutionally vague. The Board …

When unoccupied by an explicit external task, humans engage in a wide range of different types of self-generated thinking. These are often unrelated to the immediate environment and have unique psychological features. Although contemporary perspectives on ongoing thought recognise the heterogeneity of these self-generated states, we lack both a clear understanding of how to classify the specific states, and how they can be mapped empirically. In the current study, we capitalise on advances in machine learning that allow continuous neural data to be divided into a set of distinct temporally re-occurring patterns, or states. We applied this technique to a …

Influence Of Lithium Bromide On Electrical Properties In Bio-Based Polymer Electrolytes, Ahmad Faizrin Fuzlin, Bouchta Sahraoui, Ahmad Salihin Samsudin

Makara Journal of Technology

This research presents the influence of lithium bromide (LiBr) on the electrical properties of alginate in bio-based polymer electrolytes (BBPEs) system. Bio-based alginate was prepared using the solution casting technique with various LiBr compositions. The ionic conductivity and electrical properties of the prepared BBPEs samples were studied using electrical impedance spectroscopy over a frequency range of 50 Hz–1 MHz. A maximum ionic conductivity of 7.46 × 10−5 S cm-1 was obtained for a sample containing 15 wt. % lithium bromide-doped alginate BBPEs at ambient temperature (303 K). The electrical analysis revealed that the most conductive sample based on alginate-LiBr BBPEs …

Hydraulic And Mineralogical Characterization Of Organoclay Before And After Reaction With Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (Napl), Mostafa Afzalian

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sediment capping—a method used to stabilize and remediate contaminated subaqueous sediment in lakes or river shores by covering the contaminant with multiple layered materials— is a more effective, economic, and durable in situ treatment compared to ex situ methods such as dredging. The caps are typically composed of porous geomaterials such as gravels, sands, Reactive Core Mat (RCM), including reactive soils (e.g., organoclay) and geosynthetics (e.g., geotextiles). The designed caps are regarded as water-permeable so as not to disturb the sediment; however, the caps become unsaturated state because of trapped gas generated from the decomposition of organic matter. Most of …

Crises Of Vernacular Architecture: The Tale Of Two Versions Of 'New Gourna' In Upper Egypt., Khaled Ahmed, Lamis Elgizawy

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Gourna, a vernacular village in Upper Egypt was built above Pharonic heritage site. ill order to protect the monuments from theft, the Egyptian government commissioned Hassan Fathy in 1940s to design a new settlement for The Gourna residents. Unfortunately the project failed as most of the residents refused 10 move 10 the new village. Recently the government repealed the attempt but this time the second version of the New Gourna came significantly different from the Fatny's one. The main objective of the paper is to investigate if the second version of New Gourna is going to overcome the problems associated …

A Theory/Practice Divide: Exploring Perceptions Of Inclusion In Schools, Christine L. Cho Dec 2020

A Theory/Practice Divide: Exploring Perceptions Of Inclusion In Schools, Christine L. Cho

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education

This article explores the theory-practice divide with respect to actualizing how diversity and inclusion can be explicitly addressed in schools. This paper contributes important insights for teacher educators in terms of recognizing and challenging problematic assumptions teacher candidates (TCs) may hold. This research presses TCs to examine the structure of schools through a critical lens, as teachers, particularly those from the dominant group, tend to act in surface ways, avoiding conflict by using seemingly inclusive language and ideas, and either ignoring or not seeing the real challenges many historically marginalized students face. The assignment upon which this study was based …

Between The Visceral And The Lie : Lessons On Teaching Violence, Brian Gibbs Dec 2020

Between The Visceral And The Lie : Lessons On Teaching Violence, Brian Gibbs

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education

Drawing from two qualitative case studies, one researching how teachers teach about war to the children of soldiers and the other examining how teachers teach lynching near historic lynching sites, this critical phenomenological study weighs how much horror and how much hope should be taught if the aim of the instruction is a liberating education. The author argues that a balance of both is necessary. Students cannot be left in the hopelessness of knowledge alone but must be taught how to engage their world with the possibility of making change.

Aligning Food Environments With Institutional Values: A Mixed Methods Study Of Oregon Health Care Organizations, Elizaveta Walker Dec 2020

Aligning Food Environments With Institutional Values: A Mixed Methods Study Of Oregon Health Care Organizations, Elizaveta Walker

Dissertations and Theses

A major driver of the obesity epidemic is obesogenic food environments, characterized by nutrient-poor and energy-dense foods that saturate the collective physical, economic and sociocultural conditions that influence nutritional status. Food environments in organizations such as hospitals and public health agencies warrant special consideration given their health-focused mission. Improving food environments within health care settings has been highlighted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of seven key strategies to prevent obesity. However, most of the refereed literature examining healthy food environment policies (HFEPs) within hospitals focuses on the inpatient dietary environment, leaving a paucity of …
