Leveraging Image Analysis To Compute 3d Plant Phenotypes Based On Voxel-Grid Plant Reconstruction, Sruti Das Choudhury, Srikanth Maturu, Ashok Samal, Vincent Stoerger, Tala Awada
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
High throughput image-based plant phenotyping facilitates the extraction of morphological and biophysical traits of a large number of plants non-invasively in a relatively short time. It facilitates the computation of advanced phenotypes by considering the plant as a single object (holistic phenotypes) or its components, i.e., leaves and the stem (component phenotypes). The architectural complexity of plants increases over time due to variations in self-occlusions and phyllotaxy, i.e., arrangements of leaves around the stem. One of the central challenges to computing phenotypes from 2-dimensional (2D) single view images of plants, especially at the advanced vegetative stage in presence of self-occluding …

Economics Of Multifunctional Forestry In The Sámi People Homeland Region, Vesa-Pekka Parkatti, Olli Tahvonen
Economics Of Multifunctional Forestry In The Sámi People Homeland Region, Vesa-Pekka Parkatti, Olli Tahvonen
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We study forestry in the Sámi people homeland region to understand an ongoing conflict between conventional forest logging and maintaining forests as reindeer pastures for indigenous people. We use a detailed model that simultaneously includes timber production, carbon storage in living biomass, deadwood and wood products, negative effects on reindeer husbandry, and a flexible optimization between rotation forestry (cf. clearcuts) and forestry that maintains continuous forest cover. We show that the profitability of conventional forestry is based on utilizing existing forest stands, an outcome that can be understood as forest capital mining. By varying the carbon price between €0 tCO2 …

Rethinking Venice From An Ecosystem Services Perspective, Jane Da Mosto, Camilla Bertolini, Anil Markandya, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Tom Spencer, Arnas Palaima, Laura Onofri
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Safeguarding the future of Venice is a globally recognised challenge of urban sustainability. We propose a sustainable management model, alternative to the current strategy, that primarily focuses on the built heritage and which interprets the city together with its encircling lagoon as a matrix of interlinked natural, cultural and social capital. In particular, Venetian natural capital can be valued as a stock of wealth that produces a flow of income, its ecosystem services. Such values can be measured in economic, including monetary, terms. Using the examples of salt marsh and seagrass carbon sequestration, together with sediment retention, water purification and …

Do Voters Choose Better Politicians Than Political Parties? Evidence From A Natural Experiment In Italy, Maria Rosaria Alfano, Anna Laura Baraldi, Erasmo Papagni
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This work analyses the effect of the two preference voting systems – proportional system with blocked lists of candidates vs proportional system with open list of candidates - on the quality of politicians. The exogenous variation in the Italian Parliament electoral system (Law n. 270/2005) - which marked the switch from an open to a closed list - allows us implement a Difference-inDifferences approach to compare the change in politicians' quality (as their education level) across the treatment group (the Parliamentarians) and the control group (the regional councillors) of politicians before and after the electoral reform is enforced. We find …

Epidemiological studies indicate that elevated alkaline phosphatase activity is associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk. Other epidemiological data demonstrate that mothers giving multiple childbirths (multipara) are also at increased risk of developing late-onset cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that these two associations stem from a common cause, the insufficient plasma level of the ectopic mineralization inhibitor inorganic pyrophosphate, which is a substrate of alkaline phosphatase. As alkaline phosphatase activity is elevated in pregnancy, we hypothesized that pyrophosphate concentrations decrease gestationally, potentially leading to increased maternal vascular calcification and cardiovascular disease risk in multipara. We investigated plasma pyrophosphate kinetics pre- and postpartum …
A Study To Determine The Relationships Among Grit, Engagement, And Student Achievement, Jill Dennison
A Study To Determine The Relationships Among Grit, Engagement, And Student Achievement, Jill Dennison
Dissertations
In the absence of high quality and impact interventions, undesirable consequences of poverty will be seen to fruition. In this study, the Golden Circle business model (Sinek et al., 2017) served as the framework to understand how students’ grit, engagement, and achievement are related in Title I elementary schools. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between grit and engagement, engagement and student achievement, and finally grit and student achievement. The relationship between grit and engagement was measured by teacher and student perceptions, respectively. Student engagement and achievement were analyzed using student self-perceptions of …

The isolation, purification, and clinical deployment of antibiotics is one of the major drivers of decrease in morbidity and mortality from infectious bacteria in the 20th century. The rapid, ubiquitous deployment of antibiotics encouraged swift development and distribution of antibiotic resistance. New, novel techniques, technologies, and ultimately therapeutic antimicrobial compounds will be required to counter the rise of antibiotic resistant microbes. Historically, mimicking naturally occurring compounds has been the most fruitful method for discovering new antibiotics; unsurprisingly, many recent efforts have focused on expanding the cultivation and detection of previously unknown microbes and compounds, respectively. Other techniques explore developing compounds …

Purification And Use Of Trna For Enzymatic Post-Translational Addition Of Amino Acids To Proteins., Irem Avcilar-Kucukgoze, Howard Gamper, Ya-Ming Hou, Anna Kashina
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Post-translational addition of amino acids to proteins by enzymes using aminoacyl-tRNA is an emerging regulatory mechanism. Examples include Arg transfer in eukaryotes, Leu/Phe transfer in bacteria, and tRNA-synthetase-mediated addition of amino acids to Lys side chains. Here, we present a method of purification and use of tRNA for such reactions, focusing on tRNAArg and its use for arginylation. This method can also be used for other tRNA-mediated reactions. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Avcilar-Kucukgoze et al. (2020).

Honors Theses
Much like the Doctor, people are constantly growing and evolving, and it is out of a desire for human connection that people strive, always, to improve and as a long-running television program, Doctor Who reflects that desire for connection. This analysis explores race, gender, and society as portrayed in the modern series of Doctor Who (2005-).
