#Goingtothefair: A Social Media Listening Analysis Of Agricultural Fairs, Julie A. Mahoney, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Courtney Bir
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
Agricultural fairs provide one of the last frontiers, and largest stages, for showcasing livestock agriculture to the public. However, public funding, attendance revenue, animal biosecurity, and public health concerns are all aspects worthy of conversation and increased research attention given the interaction between livestock animals and the general public in fair and festival settings. A prominent social media listening and data analytics platform was used to quantify online and social media chatter concerning agricultural fairs during a 27-mo period. A general search for online media referencing agricultural fair keywords was designed; social and online media mentions of agricultural fairs ( …

Nothing tells the story of people working together better than a community quilt. A diversity of talents, colors, and materials brought together through skill and shared purpose. Perhaps never before have we as Americans needed a stronger reminder that many hands make short work of big problems. The work presented here by the L.A.U.N.C.H. Collaborative offers a new framework for health care that could be compared to a digital quilt, powered by community-based participatory design, with lived expertise and the newest advances in broadband-enabled connected health solutions. This work demonstrates the value and need to engage local communities and what …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(7): 1063-1071, 2020. Previous research has consistently demonstrated that regular exercise promotes antioxidant production and decreases the expression of inflammation markers. However, there is very little research examining the effects of intermittent fasting (IF) on oxidative stress and inflammation. The present study investigated the hypothesis that a combination of IF and physical activity will reduce the need for glutathione (GSH) production by decreasing oxidative stress. In addition, it was hypothesized that a combination of IF and physical activity will significantly reduce inflammation, as indicated by a decrease in interleukin-1b (IL-1b) concentration. For three months, subjects …

Stony Brook University Author Perspectives On Article Processing Charges, Victoria Pilato, Clara Yuet Tran
Library Faculty Publications
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study is to gain an understanding of Stony Brook University (SBU) author perspectives on article processing charges (APCs). Publishing an article without restrictions, also known as open access publishing, can be a costly endeavor. Many publishers charge APCs ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars to publish an article without access restrictions. Authors who cannot obtain funding from grant agencies or their institution must pay APCs on their own. Do APCs fundamentally impact how authors choose their preferred publication venues? METHODS A cross-sectional survey was designed to learn SBU author perspectives on, and concerns about, …
The Impact Of Temporal Resolution On Clinical Decision-Making For Individuals With Dysphagia, Shauna Corinne Murray
The Impact Of Temporal Resolution On Clinical Decision-Making For Individuals With Dysphagia, Shauna Corinne Murray
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia, or a disordered swallow, affects up to 1 in 25 individuals in the United States. The gold standard for assessing dysphagia is the videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing (VFES). This allows the clinician to observe the swallow anatomy in motion via an X-ray movie, which historically was recorded at 30 frames per second. In recent years VFES have been performed at less frames per second due to radiation concern. This project investigates the effect of using lower temporal resolutions on assessment of video-fluoroscopic swallow studies.
METHODS: In this investigation, 30 swallow studies, all acquired at 30 frames per second, …

The biological effects of architectural spaces are one of the methods used to discover the link between architectural spaces and health state of its users. Architectural history shows some models supports the existence of biological effects of architectural space, such as the Great Pyramid. This architectural model has been studied in a scientific manner and his biological effect has been proven in many scientific research. In this research, angles of the pyramid have been tested as one of the components of formality. Designed modules are configured from the four angles of the pyramid; these modules derived four simple forms reflect the …

The stoichiometry of physical nutrient supply may provide a constraint on the spatial distribution and rate of marine nitrogen (N2) fixation. Yet agreement between the N2 fixation rates inferred from nutrient supply and those directly measured has been lacking. The relative transport of phosphate and nitrate across the Gulf Stream suggests that 3–6 Tg N year−1 must be fixed to maintain steady nutrient stoichiometry in the North Atlantic subtropical gyre. Here we show direct measurements of N2 fixation consistent with these estimates, suggesting elevated N2 fixation in and near the Gulf Stream. At some locations across the Gulf Stream, we …

Coordination Variability In Overground Running And Walking At Preferred And Fixed Speeds, Hannah Wyatt, Carl Jewell, Gillian Weir, Richard E.A. Van Emmerik, Joseph Hamill
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Coordination variability (CoordV) is impacted by the type and speed of locomotion, however, the appropriate number of trials required for stable outputs during overground locomotion is yet to be determined. The purpose of this study was to analyse the CoordV of lower limb segment and joint couplings to determine the number of trials needed for a stable mean during running and walking at preferred and fixed speeds. Three-dimensional lower-limb kinematics were captured for recreational runners (n = 10) performing 20 trials of each condition. Using a modified vector coding technique, segment and joint couplings were derived, from which, CoordV …

Dynamics Of Handstand Balance, Hannah Wyatt, Domenico Vicinanza, Karl Newell, Gareth Irwin, Genevieve Williams
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to identify parameters that are associated with more successful motor control during handstand performance. For two groups of gymnasts, ‘less skilled’, who were able to hold handstands for 4 to 6s, and ‘more skilled’, who held handstands in excess of 10s, centre of mass (CoM) and centre of pressure (CoP) motion during the initial 3s of the handstand stability phase were analysed, as well as the 6 to 9s stabilised period for the more skilled gymnasts (balance phase). Time-space, time-frequency, CoM-CoP coherence, Hurst Exponent and CoM-CoP causality were investigated in anterior-posterior (AP) and medio-lateral …

Prosthetic Leg Design, Force Production, And Curve Sprint Performance: A Pilot Study, Ryan S. Alcantara
ISBS Proceedings Archive
We compared the use of a running specific prosthesis (RSP) with a solid or “split-toe“ design by athletes with a leg amputation on sprinting speed and stance-average centripetal ground reaction force (GRF) along a flat 400 m track curve, 200 m track curve, and straightaway. Three athletes with a right transtibial amputation performed maximal effort sprints along the curves (clockwise and counterclockwise) and straightaway of an indoor track using a traditional, solid RSP and an RSP with a split-toe design while we measured 3D GRFs and kinematics. Sprinting speed was significantly faster (p = 0.003) when using the split-toe RSP …

Adaptations In Triceps Surae Muscle-Tendon Unit Mechanical Properties In Elite Jumpers, Gaspar Epro, Matthias König, Falk Schade, Kiros Karamanidis
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to analyse the triceps surae (TS) muscle-tendon unit (MTU) mechanical properties (muscle strength, maximal tendon strain and tendon stiffness) in elite track and field jumpers (long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault) over several years, in order to examine potential alterations in the uniformity of adaptation within the TS MTU. The findings demonstrated a higher TS muscle strength and tendon stiffness for the take-off leg in comparison to the swing leg, irrespective of the jumping discipline. Similar symmetry indexes for muscle strength and tendon stiffness indicated to a uniform TS MTU adaptation in …
Anticipatory Effects On Whole-Body Dynamic Stability In Side Cutting, Sean P. Sankey, Mark A. Robinson, Jos Vanrenterghem
Anticipatory Effects On Whole-Body Dynamic Stability In Side Cutting, Sean P. Sankey, Mark A. Robinson, Jos Vanrenterghem
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to identify the anticipatory effects on factors that influence the ability to generate medial ground reaction forces in changes of direction, and the implications for injury risk markers. Twenty recreational soccer players completed 12 anticipated and 12 unanticipated side cutting tasks, whilst 3D motion capture and force plate data were collected. Five distinct movement strategies were found to represent factors that influence the medial ground reaction force vector, and comparisons were made between the two conditions using multiple t-tests in SPM1D. Whole-body dynamic stability is compromised by limited anticipation time, with a greater demand …

Road To Lab: Cobblestone Cycling Vibrations Transferred To The Lab, Josef Viellehner, Wolfgang Potthast
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of the study was to provide vibration recommendations for laboratory-based cycling interventions derived from field tests on cobblestones. For that purpose, the vertical accelerations of the front and rear dropouts (points of wheel fixation at the frame) of the bike frame were recorded, with five experienced cyclists riding on cobblestones at different velocities. Lab vibration recommendations are based on the median frequency (34.6 ± 1.2 – 45.6 ± 0.5 Hz), rms of acceleration (5.5 ± 0.3 - 10.2 ± 0.6 g) , peak acceleration (48.5 ± 3.8 g) , mean amplitude (3.6 ± 4.3 – 5.0 ± 6.4 …

Mechanical Properties Of The Achilles Tendon In Runners With Tendinopathy: A Pilot Study, Jiri Skypala, Daniel Jandacka
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The aim of this study was to compare the dimensions of Achilles tendon, Achilles tendon moment arm and foot lever ratio between runners with tendinopathy and healthy control runners. We paired 12 runners diagnosed with baseline tendinopathy with 12 healthy control runners. The dimensions of Achilles tendon, Achilles tendon moment arm and foot lever ratio were measured using kinematic analysis and ultrasound imaging. Based on the parametric paired-samples T-Test, we compared the dependent variables measured on the affected lower limb. No differences were found between the groups for Achilles tendon length, Achilles tendon moment arm and foot lever ratio. Runners …

Multi-Segment Contributions To Induced Ball Velocity In Collegiate Baseball Pitchers, Arnel Aguinaldo, Kristen Nicholson, Gordon Alderink, Thomas Kepple
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to implement an induced acceleration analysis (IAA) to estimate the contributions of multi-segment motion to the forward velocity of the ball in collegiate baseball pitchers. Marker-based motion capture and ground reaction force data were collected from a sample of 17 pitchers throwing off an instrumented mound. Kinematic and kinetic data were extracted to drive the IAA model to calculate the muscular and non-muscular contributions to ball velocity. The shoulder joint torque and velocity-dependent torque collectively made up the largest contribution to the total induced velocity of the ball at 61% and 37%, respectively. The …

Force-Sharing Between Triceps Surae Muscles During Rehabilitation Exercises For Achilles Tendinopathy, Enzo Hollville, Sam Van Rossom, Lukas Crabbé, Jonas Huyghe, Benedicte Vanwanseele
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The purpose of this study was to determine individual muscle forces of the Triceps Surae during a range of rehabilitation exercises for Achilles tendinopathy. We used experimental data (N=4) and musculoskeletal modelling to estimate muscle force (dynamic optimization). We observed clear peak muscle force differences between exercises. In addition, the force-sharing strategies used by the participants (i.e., individual muscle contribution to the total force produced within the Triceps Surae) were different between exercises. These preliminary results could be helpful to objectively determine the progression in exercise loading throughout rehabilitation programs. Additionally, new information regarding the influence of the type of …

A Comparison Of Trunk And Shank Angles Between Elite And Sub-Elite Sprinters During Sprint Acceleration, Byron J. Donaldson, Helen Bayne, Neil E. Bezodis
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Acceleration is a movement that requires skilful positioning of the body to apply force in the desired direction. The sagittal plane orientation of the trunk and shank are features that coaches use to visually assess sprint acceleration technique. This study examined differences in trunk and shank angles between elite and sub-elite sprinters during early acceleration using inertial sensors. Elite sprinters exhibited more vertical trunk positions throughout all four steps compared to sub-elite with moderate to very large differences at discrete events (d = 0.79 - 2.16). Shank angles were more vertical at touchdown in sub-elite compared to elite sprinters (d …
