Natural By Design, Craig Steele

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

I’m a professor in the Department of Biology and Health Sciences at Edinboro University, in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, a small, comprehensive liberal arts institution within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. My major teaching duties involve environmental biology, zoology, and ichthyology. I emphasize to my students how mathematics underlies the natural world of plants and animals, pointing out to them how many of “our” most amazing engineering and constructional achievements are copied from nature (from geodesic domes to the fusiform bows of modern commercial ships), as well as how plant and animal physiology and animal behavior (of individuals and of …

Three Creativity-Fostering Projects Implemented In A Statistics Class, Margaret Adams Jul 2020

Three Creativity-Fostering Projects Implemented In A Statistics Class, Margaret Adams

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Undergraduates in an introductory statistics class at a rural Southeastern college were assigned three creativity-fostering projects: statistics vocabulary crossword puzzle, word wall, and graffiti art poster. Given math anxiety, fear of failure, and lack of enthusiasm, it seemed imperative to spark interest and involvement. Rhodes 4P’s model (1961) served as the framework for this intrinsic case study involving 62 students. Independent thinking and research, peer collaboration, and use of art supplies within this model (person, press, process and product) generated remarkable learning outcomes. Grading rubrics focused on originality, quality and statistics content. Projects were classified into three qualitative categories ranging …

The Emergence Of Creativity: Insights From Carnatic Raaga Improvisation And Mathematical Proof Generation, Srividhya Balaji, Sean Chorney Jul 2020

The Emergence Of Creativity: Insights From Carnatic Raaga Improvisation And Mathematical Proof Generation, Srividhya Balaji, Sean Chorney

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Creativity is a broad phenomenon that scholars have interpreted in a multitude of ways. We notice that a majority of the views describe creativity as something innate. This paper aims to verge from this perspective and explore creativity in terms of the constant mutual interaction of a person and their environment. Using the theoretical framework, enactivism, and the notion of emergence, we investigate the creative processes involved in musical improvisations of south Indian classical or Carnatic music and mathematical proof generation. Interview excerpts from professional Carnatic musicians and research mathematicians on their respective creative processes during musical improvisation and proof …

Sacrificial Seed’S Impact On Native Seedling Establishment In Prairie Restoration, Jacey Meier, Isabella Betzer, Laura Jackson Jul 2020

Sacrificial Seed’S Impact On Native Seedling Establishment In Prairie Restoration, Jacey Meier, Isabella Betzer, Laura Jackson

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

Tallgrass prairie used to cover Iowa and much of the midwest– now only a small percentage of it remains. Many prairie restoration efforts are in place, but native prairie seed prices are high and seedling establishment is low. We tested how inexpensive sacrificial seed impacts the establishment of native seedlings. After planting a field with native prairie seed, we marked out six test plots and applied treatment (sacrificial seed) to three of them. We counted and evaluated the number of emerged seedlings per m2 after 4.5 months. We saw no differences in emerged seedlings per m2 between the plots with …

An Empirical Exploration Of Southeast Asian-Americans In Education Research: A Qualitative Meta-Analysis, Peter T. Keo Jul 2020

An Empirical Exploration Of Southeast Asian-Americans In Education Research: A Qualitative Meta-Analysis, Peter T. Keo

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This research examined how Southeast Asian-Americans are treated in leading K-12 and higher education research. A qualitative meta-analysis was conducted using secondary data sources. I analyzed 1,192 pages of text from 151 peer-reviewed academic articles in six K-12 and higher education journals. In a span of 10 years (2007-2016), only four of the 151 articles (2.6%) reviewed specifically addressed in whole or in part Southeast Asian-Americans – one of the most disadvantaged ethnic minority groups in America. Findings demonstrated that aggregating racial data for Asian-Americans silences under-represented Southeast Asian-Americans, suggesting that the continued fight for racial equality in educational research …

Infective Endocarditis Caused By Klebsiella Oxytoca In A Patient With Hemodialysis: A Care-Compliant Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Hanane Aissaoui, Youssef Hdidou, Ramia Bougrine, Nabila Ismaili, Noha Elouafi

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

The rarity of endocarditis due to Klebsiella species limits its recognition. We report the case of a 63-year-old man, known to have a tight calcified aortic stenosis presenting with acute heart failure associated with high fever. Klebsiella oxytoca endocarditis was diagnosed based on three sets of positive blood cultures together with fluttering vegetation (11 mm x 14 mm) on the middle segment of the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve. After 6 weeks of intravenous ceftriaxone and gentamicin bi-therapy, the patient had completely recovered. This case illustrates how sporadic this condition is, for which early assessment and proper treatment are …

Utilizing Patient-Reported Outcome Measures In The Management Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Jennifer Elizabeth Farren Jul 2020

Utilizing Patient-Reported Outcome Measures In The Management Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Jennifer Elizabeth Farren

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Inflammatory bowel disease, a chronic relapsing-remitting disorder, affects three million adults in the United States. One of the main therapeutic goals in patients with inflammatory bowel disease is mucosal healing, measured by endoscopy, an invasive procedure that does not always reflect patient symptomatology. To address these limitations, clinicians have developed patient-reported outcome measures, questionnaires evaluating bowel symptoms and quality of life. However, the clinical utility of these patient-reported outcome measures and their correlation to objective markers of inflammation is unclear. We will determine the efficacy of using a patient-reported outcome measure to inform treatment for inflammatory bowel disease. In a …

Prenatal Marijuana Use And Potential Adverse Neonatal Outcomes, Tracy L. Buechele Jul 2020

Prenatal Marijuana Use And Potential Adverse Neonatal Outcomes, Tracy L. Buechele

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Marijuana use during pregnancy has dramatically increased in recent years, driven in part by the increasing legalization of marijuana for medicinal and recreational use. However, the impact of prenatal exposure to marijuana on a developing fetus is not clear. Previous studies examining this effect have been limited by polysubstance use during pregnancy and confounding factors that make data interpretation challenging. In this study, we propose a prospective cohort study that will address the limitations of prior studies and measure the association between prenatal marijuana exposure and adverse neonatal outcomes. Strict exclusion criteria will exclude women with tobacco, alcohol or other …

Model-Based Analysis Of Chromatin Interactions From Dcas9-Based Capture-3c-Seq., Yong Chen, Yunfei Wang, Xin Liu, Jian Xu, Michael Q Zhang Jul 2020

Model-Based Analysis Of Chromatin Interactions From Dcas9-Based Capture-3c-Seq., Yong Chen, Yunfei Wang, Xin Liu, Jian Xu, Michael Q Zhang

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Deciphering long-range chromatin interactions is critical for understanding temporal and tissue-specific gene expression regulated by cis- and trans-acting factors. By combining the chromosome conformation capture (3C) and biotinylated dCas9 system, we previously established a method CAPTURE-3C-seq to unbiasedly identify high-resolution and locus-specific long-range DNA interactions. Here we present the statistical model and a flexible pipeline, C3S, for analysing CAPTURE-3C-seq or similar experimental data from raw sequencing reads to significantly interacting chromatin loci. C3S provides all steps for data processing, quality control and result illustration. It can automatically define the bin size based on the binding peak of the dCas9-targeted regions. …

Epigenetic Effects On Health And Behavior, Peter Seivers Jul 2020

Epigenetic Effects On Health And Behavior, Peter Seivers

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Epigenetics plays a vital role in one’s health and behavior starting in utero and lasting until death. We look at why epigenetics is important and the mechanisms in which epigenetics works on one’s DNA. We will also see several of the disease processes in which we have research linking their causation directly to an epigenetic influence. The topic of epigenetics is quite large and growing and hence we have not sought to provide an exhaustive picture of the current research that is available. We feel the most important piece of this work is being able to connect the original study …

Roman Catholic Perspective Of Sin And Homosexuality: Scrutinizing The Signs Of The Times, Patrick U. Nwosu Jul 2020

Roman Catholic Perspective Of Sin And Homosexuality: Scrutinizing The Signs Of The Times, Patrick U. Nwosu

International Review of Humanities Studies

In a pluralistic world, in which the issues of homosexuality and gay rights have taken the centre stage of discourse in Sub-Saharan Africa, critical analysis is required to re-appraise the Roman Catholic perspective of sin and homosexuality. Again, the emergence of the study of homosexuality as a subfield within African Studies gives further vent to critical reflection to assess the merits and demerits of Church pronouncements on the issues. In the context of emerging fields of study and various sexual orientations of people of different cultures today, the issue of the Roman Catholic understanding of sin and her teaching on …

Ultrasound Guided Intravenous Access In The Emergency Department, Lynieta Leisure

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

One-quarter of all emergency department visits in the United States results in peripheral intravenous line (PIV) placement for parenteral fluid administration (Fields, Piela, Au and Ku, 2014). When PIV access is delayed, critical care measures are also delayed. Meyer et al. (2014), reports the first attempt PIV access failure rate is approximately 25%. In the critically ill patient, timely PIV access may be the difference between survival and death. Difficult venous access is present in approximately one in ten ED patients requiring PIV access (Fields et al., 2014). The purpose of this scholarly project is to implement a quality improvement …

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles

We present the first genetic map of tedera (Bituminaria bituminosa (L.) C.H. Stirton), a drought-tolerant forage legume from the Canary Islands with useful pharmaceutical properties. It is also the first genetic map for any species in the tribe Psoraleeae (Fabaceae). The map comprises 2042 genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) markers distributed across 10 linkage groups, consistent with the haploid chromosome count for this species (n = 10). Sequence tags from the markers were used to find homologous matches in the genome sequences of the closely related species in the Phaseoleae tribe: soybean, common bean, and cowpea. No tedera linkage groups align in their …

Insecta Mundi

Three groups of beetles inhabit cones of cycads (Cycadales) in the northern hemisphere and are believed to be involved in their pollination. The primitive weevil subtribe Allocorynina (Coleoptera: Belidae) is restricted to the New World cycad genera Dioon Lindl. and Zamia L. One group of weevils (Curculionidae), found only in Cycas L., appears to be a relatively recent colonizer of northern hemisphere cycads. Members of the beetle subfamily Pharaxonothinae (Erotylidae) occur in all Asian and New World cycad genera. Phylogenetic trees of these beetles, based on DNA analysis and supported with morphological studies, are compared to patterns of continental drift …

First Record Of The Orchid Bee Euglossa Dilemma (Hymenoptera: Apidae) In Hispaniola, The Antilles, Julio A. Genaro, Ismael A. Hinojosa-Díaz, Lisa Mcdowell Johnson

Insecta Mundi

The occurrence of the orchid bee Euglossa dilemma Bembé and Eltz (Hymenoptera: Apidae) is recorded for the first time for the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles. Males were observed visiting varieties of sweet basil plants (Ocimum basilicum Linnaeus (Lamiaceae)) to obtain fragrances used during courtship and reproduction. Our observations showed that the species is established in Hispaniola and that it does not require the presence of orchids for reproductive success, being able to adapt to new plant resources it finds in the areas it colonizes. These observations correspond to what was found in Florida, United States, where …

Predictive Effects Of College-Level Work Completed In High School On Baccalaureate Degree Outcomes, Wil Perkins Jul 2020

Predictive Effects Of College-Level Work Completed In High School On Baccalaureate Degree Outcomes, Wil Perkins

College of Education Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the predictive effects of completing accelerated college credits over and above the predictive effects of the FASFA EFC index number, sex, and first-generation student status on baccalaureate outcomes on first-time college students on years to completion, graduation GPA, and number of hours completed. Accelerated college credits include AP, dual-enrollment, and dual-credit courses. The promise of completing college-level work in high school is that it prepares the student for the rigor of collegiate work, translating into a higher post-secondary GPA and a shorter time to degree attainment; however, little research has been conducted …

Cell Cycle Regulation In Macrophages And Susceptibility To Hiv-1, Isabella A. T. M. Ferreira, James Zachary Porterfield, Ravindra K. Gupta, Petra Mlcochova

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Macrophages are the first line of defence against invading pathogens. They play a crucial role in immunity but also in regeneration and homeostasis. Their remarkable plasticity in their phenotypes and function provides them with the ability to quickly respond to environmental changes and infection. Recent work shows that macrophages undergo cell cycle transition from a G0/terminally differentiated state to a G1 state. This G0-to-G1 transition presents a window of opportunity for HIV-1 infection. Macrophages are an important target for HIV-1 but express high levels of the deoxynucleotide-triphosphate hydrolase SAMHD1, which restricts viral DNA synthesis by decreasing levels of dNTPs. While …

Influence Of Cover Crop Management Practices On Rainfed Corn Production In Semi-Arid Western Nebraska, Alexandre Tonon Rosa Jul 2020

Influence Of Cover Crop Management Practices On Rainfed Corn Production In Semi-Arid Western Nebraska, Alexandre Tonon Rosa

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

With the increased cover crop (CC) popularity, producers of semi-arid regions of western Nebraska are questioning whether they could successfully incorporate CC into their rainfed winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-corn (Zea mays L.)-fallow rotations. The major concern is that CCs may deplete soil water affecting the subsequent crop. Therefore, three studies were established under rainfed conditions of western Nebraska to access the effects of CCs on soil water, soil compaction, nutrient cycling, weed demographics, residue coverage, and subsequent corn yield. The first study evaluated the influence of CC planting and termination times prior to corn establishment. Late termination …
