A Normative Classification Of Consumer Big Data, Anuashine Chefor Ellis Aug 2020

A Normative Classification Of Consumer Big Data, Anuashine Chefor Ellis

Doctoral Dissertations

The big data phenomenon has transformed every area of life and business. Businesses today rely on the volume, velocity, and variety (3Vs) of data available today in product design, advertisement, sales, and post-sale follow up activities. Communication between the firm and the consumer is personalized using data collected on the consumer to match the consumer’s location, time, and needs. Some marketers argue that this has birth a new era of marketing; transformative marketing, in which the firm’s ability to deliver value and to acquire and maintain long-run competitive advantage determined by the firm’s data resources. In other words, data are …

This is an open access article published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Angiogenesis is essential for cardiac functional recovery after myocardial infarction (MI). HSPA12B is predominately expressed in endothelial cells and required for angiogenesis. Yes-associated protein (YAP) plays an important role in tumor angiogenesis. This study investigated the cooperative role of HSPA12B and YAP in angiogenesis after MI. Silencing of either HSPA12B or YAP impaired hypoxia-promoted endothelial cell proliferation and angiogenesis. Deficiency of HSPA12B suppressed YAP expression and nuclear translocation after hypoxia. Knockdown of YAP attenuated hypoxia-stimulated HSPA12B nuclear translocation and abrogated HSPA12B-promoted endothelial …

Crop nitrogen (N) status is known to affect crop water status and crop water use. To investigate further the N effects on soil water changes and on canopy temperature, three water levels × four N levels were imposed on two growing seasons of maize in west central Nebraska, USA. Soil water changes were measured using a neutron probe, whereas canopy temperature was measured using infrared thermometers on a ground-based mobile platform. At all water levels, soil water losses over monthlong intervals were generally greater as N levels increased. Given equal water levels, early afternoon canopy temperatures were usually lower with …

Preterm birth is the leading cause of mortality in children under the age of five worldwide. Despite major efforts, we still lack the ability to accurately predict and effectively prevent preterm birth. While multiple factors contribute to preterm labor, dysregulations of immunological adaptations required for the maintenance of a healthy pregnancy is at its pathophysiological core. Consequently, a precise understanding of these chronologically paced immune adaptations and of the biological pacemakers that synchronize the pregnancy “immune clock” is a critical first step towards identifying deviations that are hallmarks of peterm birth. Here, we will review key elements of the fetal, …

Relative Size Underlies Alternative Morph Development In A Salamander, Michael P. Moore, Joseph H. K. Pechmann, Howard H. Whiteman Aug 2020

Relative Size Underlies Alternative Morph Development In A Salamander, Michael P. Moore, Joseph H. K. Pechmann, Howard H. Whiteman

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Size thresholds commonly underlie the induction of alternative morphological states. However, the respective importance of absolute and relative size to such thresholds remains uncertain. If absolute size governs expression, morph frequency should differ among environments that influence absolute sizes (e.g. resources, competition), and individuals of the same morph should have similar average sizes across environments. If relative size determines expression, the frequency of each morph may not differ among environments, but morphs within each environment should differ in size relative to one another. We tested these predictions in a salamander (Ambystoma talpoideum) that develops into either a terrestrial …

The Influence Of Sleep And Physical Performance On Food Choice And Body Mass Index Of College Students, Nathalie Cahill

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role dietary choice plays between two relationships for college students: sleep and body mass index and sleep and physical performance. Previous research has continuously indicated that college students are receiving poor sleep, both in terms of length and quality (Buboltz et al., 2009; Lund et al., 2010). Poor sleep length and sleep quality has been found to impact diet (Grandner et al., 2010; Hicks et al., 1986; Wells & Cruess, 2006), weight and body mass index (Kathrotia et al., 2010; Roane et al., 2015; Vargas et al., 2014), mental health …

Vitamin C As An Adjunct Therapy In Sepsis Management, Nicholas Becker

Theses and Graduate Projects

In the United States, sepsis afflicts nearly one in three ICU patients, is associated with monumental healthcare costs, and is among the leading causes of death. The burden of sepsis is felt globally, and efforts are underway to discover an effective adjunctive therapy. Vitamin C is a novel treatment showing promising early evidence. Additionally, vitamin C's use in combination therapy with hydrocortisone and thiamine has been postulated. These components are thought to work congruently to attenuate the pathophysiologic process of sepsis.

To answer whether vitamin C improves septic patient outcomes, a variety of methods were used to obtain information. Primarily, …

Factors That Impact Glycemic Control In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Kelsey Mcfarling Aug 2020

Factors That Impact Glycemic Control In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes, Kelsey Mcfarling

Theses and Graduate Projects

The incidence of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is increasing worldwide and is diagnosed disproportionately in adolescent populations. Additionally, studies show that adolescents with T1D experience worse glycemic control during this developmental period. Maintaining glycemic control in patients with T1D decreases the risk of developing future diabetic-related complications. Factors such as race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and medical comorbidities influence disparities in maintaining glycemic control in adolescents. The recognition of these factors on the management of T1D through an integrative team approach leads to increased glycemic control and decreased diabetic- related complications. This paper explores the effects of …

A Molecular Scale Study Of Cavitation Growth And Shock Response In Soft Materials, Khandakar Mahmud Aug 2020

A Molecular Scale Study Of Cavitation Growth And Shock Response In Soft Materials, Khandakar Mahmud

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Cavitation is a mechanism through which small vapor-filled cavities are formed in a liquid medium due to rapid changes of pressure. In liquid, the cavitation bubble is created when surrounding pressure drops below the saturation vapor pressure. Here, cavitation formation due to shock wave is considered. The molecular level heterogeneous and homogenous cavitation mechanisms and bubble growth kinetics in soft gelatin hydrogel and water has been studied. Gelatin, which is derived from collagen, is frequently used as a brain simulant material. As such, the morphology of gelatin is very different from water. In the heterogeneous cavitation study, using molecular dynamics …

A Multiscale Study Of Cavitation Mechanism And Damage In Soft Materials, Fuad Hasan Aug 2020

A Multiscale Study Of Cavitation Mechanism And Damage In Soft Materials, Fuad Hasan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Cavitation is defined as the formation and growth of the gaseous bubble in bulk liquid due to the tensile pressure followed by the violent collapse. The collapse of the bubble is particularly significant due to its potential to cause damage to relatively stronger materials by either creating pressure waves (symmetric collapse) or liquid jet (asymmetric collapse). The study of cavitation in soft materials (e.g., tissue, brain, gelatin gel, etc.) has, therefore, gained a fair share of attention in the scientific communities. Recent studies have indicated that cavitation could be one of the leading causes of the mild Traumatic Brain Injury …

Microchannel Technology In Cancer Cell Confined-Migration Study And Its Application In Drug Screening, Qionghua Shen

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

PDMS-based microchannel device has been explored to extend the basic platform for three-dimensional (3D) culture models of cell motility study because of its relevant stiffness and designable shape. Moreover, it is easy to add multi-functions (physical cures and biochemical cures) to one single device and provide a more physiologically relevant context to cells migrating inside channels. As recent cell motility studies have proved that cells show different migration strategies in physiologically confined three-dimensional (3D) space compared to a two-dimensional (2D) culture system. Besides, far from unique, when cancer cells are underling the migrating stage, they show increased resistance to chemo- …

In Vivo Ultrasound-Switchable Fluorescence Imaging And Its Applications, Tingfeng Yao Aug 2020

In Vivo Ultrasound-Switchable Fluorescence Imaging And Its Applications, Tingfeng Yao

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

The conventional fluorescence imaging has limited spatial resolution in centimeters-deep tissue because of the tissue’s high scattering property. Ultrasound-switchable fluorescence (USF) imaging, a new imaging technique, was recently proposed to realize high-resolution fluorescence imaging in centimeters-deep tissue. Although promising results were achieved in tissue-mimic phantoms or tissue samples, the in vivo USF imaging had not been realized so far. There were two major challenges in realizing in vivo USF imaging. First, the lack of stable near-infrared (NIR) USF contrast agents in a biological environment and the lack of data about their biodistributions. Second, the previous USF imaging systems adopted a …

Islet transplantation is a surgical procedure aimed at providing insulin independence to those suffering with Type I diabetes. Prior to implantation, a therapeutic window exists ex vivo where the cells can be treated in order to improve the procedure’s efficacy. It is well established that physical stimuli are able to affect cellular functionality. Thus the work herein is designed to elucidate the effects and mechanisms by which the insulin secreting β-cells respond to non-invasive electric field stimulation and photobiomodulation. Insulin secreting β-cells are an electrically active cell type and utilize their calcium dynamics to control insulin secretion. The calcium dynamics …

Nanoparticle-Based Approaches In Cardiovascular Diseases, Aneetta E. Kuriakose Aug 2020

Nanoparticle-Based Approaches In Cardiovascular Diseases, Aneetta E. Kuriakose

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) such as balloon angioplasty and stent placement are commonly employed for myocardial revascularization. These strategies, however, injure the arterial wall initiating a cascade of inflammatory responses that culminates in restenosis. Attempts are currently being made to improve the stents/balloon designs such that they suppress the inflammatory responses and support/enhance in situ reendothelialization. But the healing of the injured artery remains a major challenge. Therefore, in this work, we propose to characterize and identify a suitable fluorescent nanoparticle system that has potential to be used as vascular drug carriers. We also developed nanoparticles (NPs) that could enhance …

Sorption-Mediated Chemical Processes For The Versatile Treatment Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) In Complex Media, Naomi Gevaerd De Souza Aug 2020

Sorption-Mediated Chemical Processes For The Versatile Treatment Of Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas) In Complex Media, Naomi Gevaerd De Souza

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

In recent years, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have gained notoriety due to environmental and health concerns. These molecules are chemically stable which contributes to their persistence in biological systems and their increased detections in surface waters. Treatment of highly persistent PFAS has been a challenging but significant task. The most practical technique for removal of PFAS is through adsorption onto granular activated carbon (GAC) or other novel materials. Meanwhile, PFAS are resistant to simple oxidation, and although decomposition of specific PFAS has been reported through advanced oxidation technologies, often energy-intense technologies capable of generating electrons such as ultraviolet radiation, …

Stream Biodiversity And Co-Occurrence Network Topology Along Sub-Continental To Global Nutrient And Land Use Gradients, William Robert Budnick Aug 2020

Stream Biodiversity And Co-Occurrence Network Topology Along Sub-Continental To Global Nutrient And Land Use Gradients, William Robert Budnick

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Freshwaters are some of the most vulnerable ecosystems to global change forces, such as land use and eutrophication, implicated in the loss of biodiversity and biotic homogenization (increased similarity) of species communities. However, much less is known about the impact of these forces on the mechanisms underlying biodiversity and the patterns of species co-occurrence. In this dissertation, I use sub-continental to global stream community datasets to investigate the effects of land use and nutrients on algal, macroinvertebrate, and fish biodiversity, abundance, and complexity of co-occurrence patterns to pursue three objectives. I first investigate how agriculture contributes to biotic homogenization, and …

Salt Marsh Dynamics In A Period Of Accelerated Sea Level Rise, Sergio Fagherazzi, Giulio Mariotti, Nicoletta Leonardi, Alberto Canestrelli, William Nardin, William S. Kearney

Faculty Publications

Salt marshes are dynamic systems able to laterally expand, contract, and vertically accrete in response to sea level rise. Here, we present the grand challenges that need to be addressed to fully characterize marsh morphodynamics. The review focuses on physical processes and quantitative models. Without predictive models, it is impossible to determine the future marsh evolution under accelerated sea level rise. In these models, one of the challenges is to resolve both horizontal and vertical dynamics within the same framework. Vertically, the marsh has to accumulate enough material to contrast rising water levels. Horizontally, marsh erosion at the ocean side …
