Mimicking Prophage Induction In The Body: Induction In The Lab With Ph Gradients, Taylor Miller-Ensminger, Andrea Garretto, Nicole Stark, Catherine Putonti

Bioinformatics Faculty Publications

The majority of bacteria within the human body are lysogens, often harboring multiple bacteriophage sequences (prophages) within their genomes. While several different types of environmental stresses can trigger or induce prophages to enter into the lytic cycle, they have yet to be fully explored and understood in the human microbiota. In the laboratory, the most common induction method is the DNA damaging chemical Mitomycin C. Although pH has been listed in the literature as an induction method, it is not widely used. Here, we detail a protocol for prophage induction by culture under different pH conditions. We explored the effects …

The Glass Ceiling: Exploring The Leadership Journey Of Men And Women In High-Tech, Shelia Faye Krueger

Dissertations

The literature is replete with evidence of the proliferation of women entering into the workplace, their remarkable progress in attaining higher education, their overrepresentation in professional and management roles, and their placement in CEO leadership positions in certain high-profile S&P 500 global companies. Yet women continue to be noticeably underrepresented in leadership roles, especially in high tech companies. Through the lenses of social constructivist and feminist theories of gender stereotypes, social/gender roles, and role congruity expectations, this instrumental case study was conducted to gain insight into the reasons women are underrepresented in leadership roles in high tech and the ways …

The Effect Of Phytoplankton Properties On The Ingestion Of Marine Snow By Calanus Pacificus, Grace Cawley Aug 2020

The Effect Of Phytoplankton Properties On The Ingestion Of Marine Snow By Calanus Pacificus, Grace Cawley

Theses

The aggregation of phytoplankton into marine snow provides a mechanism by which smaller particles can coagulate to form larger particles, which can be consumed at various depths or readily transported to the deep ocean and sequestered from the atmosphere on time scales of a thousand years or more. Zooplankton interacting with these large carbon-rich aggregates can obtain nutrition in environments where the phytoplankton size spectrum is small and not directly available, enhancing the possibility of obtaining adequate nutrition in environments dominated by small cells. In addition, interactions between zooplankton and marine snow can result in fragmentation, thus affecting the particle …
