Racial Justice And The Image Of Public Health, Marilyn Fischer Sep 2020

Racial Justice And The Image Of Public Health, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

The City Commission in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio recently adopted a resolution declaring racism a public health crisis. In doing so, Dayton joins municipalities around the country, as the global pandemic of coronavirus COVID-19 swirls around us. The Commission gave compelling reasons for their action, citing the disparate rates of poor health outcomes in African American communities, as well as disproportionately high rates of poverty, unemployment, economic distress, homelessness, incarceration, and inadequate education.

The Commission’s commitment to remedy these inequities is welcome. Others have laid out this evidence in much detail; I want to focus here on public health …

Biology Faculty Publications

The ecology of headwater streams is tightly linked to the riparian zone through organic matter subsidies which are highly susceptible to alteration due to biological invasion. Lonicera maackii is a non-native shrub that is a highly successful invader of headwater stream riparian zones in the American Midwest. We assessed effects on benthic macroinvertebrates across a gradient of invasion intensity from references sites with minimal invasion to a site that had a very heavy invasion. Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled throughout the year and compositional differences were assessed using Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling ordination, and by comparing the prevalence of sensitive (Ephemeroptera, Plectoptera, …

An Integrative Curriculum Of Perseverance Enhancement For Medical Students Throughout Their Early Career: Literature Review And Design Proposal, Shih-Cheng Liao, Ming-Been Lee

Journal of Medical Education

Difficult patients or encounters related to medical disputes are essential sources of emotional stress for medical personnel. There is no useful ready-made model to alleviate the burden, and the management of medical disputes requires in-depth understanding and intervention. The best strategies for early career doctor's emotional resilience and perseverance training are still to be studied. An ideal course should be intersected between different grades and extended to the postgraduate hospital teaching courses. This review aims to consolidate current shreds of evidence about the association between physician job stress and physician-patient relationship; to find the possible solution to enhance physician's inner …

Enhancing Gravel Roughing Filter Performance With Zero Valent Iron And Anion Exchange Resin, Anthony Guidice Sep 2020

Enhancing Gravel Roughing Filter Performance With Zero Valent Iron And Anion Exchange Resin, Anthony Guidice

Master's Theses and Capstones

Gravel roughing filters (GRFs) are used as a way to buffer small systems that are sensitive to contaminant spikes within influent waters, however they tend to fall short in the removal of contaminants such as arsenic or organic precursors. A possible solution to this shortcoming is the addition of granular Zero Valent Iron (ZVI) or Ion Exchange Resin to the GRFs. ZVI is non-proprietary and non-deleterious to biofiltration systems. Ion exchange resins are proprietary however they are non-deleterious to biofiltration systems. ZVI or resin can be added as a portion of the media in a vertical upflow filter and as …

The Effect Of Cold Pool Variability On Zooplankton Dynamics Of The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Jennifer Johnson Sep 2020

The Effect Of Cold Pool Variability On Zooplankton Dynamics Of The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Jennifer Johnson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Interannual variability of ocean temperatures and sea ice extent has been observed on the eastern Bering Sea (EBS) shelf, where annual conditions have resulted in regional “Cold” or “Warm” years. Consecutive years of Cold or Warm year characterization has resulted in regime states within the past two decades. A characteristic feature of the EBS is a subsurface layer linked to seasonal sea ice (SSI) and defined by bottom temperatures less than 2°C, termed the Cold Pool. Cold Pool variability is tied to the dynamics of fish distribution in the Arctic and subarctic ecotones. Water column, multifrequency acoustic backscatter data were …

Chronic Strain, Gendered Coping, And Health Outcomes In A Rural Context, Deirdre Ann Laselva Sep 2020

Chronic Strain, Gendered Coping, And Health Outcomes In A Rural Context, Deirdre Ann Laselva

Master's Theses and Capstones

Although there is a considerable body of literature examining mental and physical health outcomes among adolescents and adults, there is less research that focuses on emerging adulthood and how emerging adults - especially within a rural context – experience mental and physical health. Furthermore, less is known regarding how or if gender impacts the relationships between coping style and outcomes among this population. Studies historically show that women report higher rates of anxiety, depressed mood, and chronically debilitating physical illnesses than men. The differences in rates of disorders between men and women is often explained by citing traditional gender roles; …

Pesticide Treated Crop Seeds And Tillage Alter Seed Coat Fungal Communities On Amaranthus Retroflexus In A Maize-Soybean Cropping System, Samuel Arrington Palmer Sep 2020

Pesticide Treated Crop Seeds And Tillage Alter Seed Coat Fungal Communities On Amaranthus Retroflexus In A Maize-Soybean Cropping System, Samuel Arrington Palmer

Master's Theses and Capstones

Soil fungi, by damaging or decaying weed seeds in the soil seed bank, are important agents of biological weed control. Pesticide seed treatments (PST) that include fungicides may alter the communities of soil fungi that colonize weed seeds in the soil and therefore the nature and efficacy of this important source of biological weed control. Tillage, by disrupting fungal networks and spatially redistributing the fungicides associated with PST throughout the soil profile, may mediate the effects of PST on seed coat fungi. We conducted a two-year experiment at two sites with two levels of PST (treated and untreated crop seeds) …

Evaluating The Acute And Chronic Toxicity Of Potassium Carbonate And The Interactive Effects Between Sodium And Potassium On Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Ashutosh Rao

Master's Theses and Capstones

Capture-and-reuse of recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) effluents as hydroponic fertilizer can mitigate the high costs of waste treatment and disposal. However, RAS operators must address limitations in macro- (K, Ca) and micro-nutrients (Fe, Zn, Mo, Cu) and the phytotoxic sodium concentrations (>50 mg/L Na) present in solution. One option is to replace sodium-based pH buffering salts such as sodium bicarbonate with potassium-based derivates such as potassium carbonate or bicarbonate. However, findings in previous studies demonstrate adverse sublethal impacts on fish health due to elevated potassium concentrations. Lethal effects of potassium salts (KCl, KHCO3, and K2SO4) have been demonstrated in …

The Development Of A Naturally-Derived Hydroponic Nutrient Solution From Recirculating Aquaculture System Effluent Using Microbial Digestion, Joseph Tetreault Sep 2020

The Development Of A Naturally-Derived Hydroponic Nutrient Solution From Recirculating Aquaculture System Effluent Using Microbial Digestion, Joseph Tetreault

Master's Theses and Capstones

The United States imports more seafood than any other country in the world. Supporting the development of a sustainable aquaculture industry will allow the United States to meet domestic seafood demand and compete in international markets. However, conventional aquaculture production methods such as pond and net pen systems are limited in capacity to meet the market demands for variety and local production. Instead, recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are a promising option for domestic aquaculture expansion. RAS is a controlled environment agriculture production model which is location-independent, offers significant water conservation, and optimizes environmental conditions to maximize fish production year round. …

Impact Of Coagulation And Ozonation Pretreatment On Ceramic Microfiltration, Meghan Rita White Sep 2020

Impact Of Coagulation And Ozonation Pretreatment On Ceramic Microfiltration, Meghan Rita White

Master's Theses and Capstones

Globally drinking water sources are under pressure. In many places, there is unintended closure of the water cycle. This means that the wastewater treatment plant effluent with all its pollutants ends up in the source of drinking water treatment plants that are not designed to treat this type of water. Impacts on water sources from factors such as climate change and high population density make unintended reuse, indirect reuse, and potable reuse more accepted and explored. Known reuse schemes use high end treatment technologies such as ceramic microfiltration. While ceramic microfiltration is a beneficial treatment option, its effectiveness can be …

Process Controls Of The Live Root Zone And Carbon Sequestration Capacity Of The Sundarbans Mangrove Forest, Bangladesh, Edwin J. Bomer, Carol A. Wilson, Tracy Elsey-Quirk

Faculty Publications

The conservation of coastal wetland ecosystems, like mangrove forests and salt marshes, represents a critical strategy for mitigating atmospheric emissions and climate change in the 21st century. Yet the existence of these environments is threatened by human-induced disturbances, namely deforestation and accelerated sea-level rise. Coastal systems maintain surface elevation in response to sea-level rise through a combination of physical and biological processes both above and below the ground surface. The quantification and relative contribution of belowground process controls (e.g., seasonal water content, organic matter decomposition) on surface elevation change is largely unexplored but crucial for informing coastal ecosystem sustainability. To …

A Small-Volume, High-Throughput Approach For Surface Tension And Viscosity Measurements Of Liquid Fuels, Wanjun Dang, Wei Zhao, Ingmar Schoegl, Shyam Menon

Faculty Publications

An ongoing effort looking at bioblendstocks to function as drop-in replacements or blending components for gasoline has identified a large number of candidate fuels. This work documents an approach for rapid screening of candidate fuels using relatively small sample sizes (O(μ l)) that targets two key physical properties of liquid fuels - surface tension and viscosity. The approach utilizes shape oscillation dynamics of single droplets generated by a piezo-electric device and their decay over time. Strobed imaging of the oscillation process is used along with image processing, edge detection, and data analysis to capture the decay of the oscillation over …

Effects Of Coupled Consolidation And Overwash Processes On A Low-Lying Headland System, Brian D. Harris, Cody Johnson, Navid H. Jafari, Qin Chen, Celalettin E. Ozdemir

Faculty Publications

Coastal barrier islands serve as the first line of defense against storm-induced hazards and coastal erosion. Due to sea-level rise and more frequently occurring storms, barrier island restoration and rehabilitation have become more important for coastal protection. The current-state-of-the practice for simulation of barrier island restoration design mostly overlooks consolidation as one of the governing processes. However, low-lying barrier islands, especially those built on loose deltaic or estuarine deposits, may further lose elevation due to consolidation and become more vulnerable to erosion. This study investigates the impacts of consolidation without overwash, overwash without consolidation, and coupled consolidation and overwash in …

A 23 M.Y. Record Of Low Atmospheric Co2, Ying Cui, Brian A. Schubert, A. Hope Jahren Sep 2020

A 23 M.Y. Record Of Low Atmospheric Co2, Ying Cui, Brian A. Schubert, A. Hope Jahren

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Current atmospheric CO2 concentration is known to be higher than it has been during the past ~800 k.y. of Earth history, based on direct measurement of CO2 within ice cores. A comparison to the more ancient past is complicated by a deficit of CO2 proxies that may be applied across very long spans of geologic time. Here, we present a new CO2 record across the past 23 m.y. of Earth history based on the δ13C value of terrestrial C3 plant remains, using a method applicable to the entire ~400 m.y. history of C3 photosynthesis on land. Across the …

Survey Of Airflow Around A Heated Manikin As A Simulated Aeromedical Evacuation Patient On A Litter With Computational Fluid Dynamics Models, George P. Lemmer

Theses and Dissertations

Aeromedical Evacuations remain the predominant method used to transport patients from forward deployed areas of operations to secure locations with more robust medical infrastructure. Transportation of chemical warfare casualties and infectious patients require additional attention to prevent cross contamination. Specific airflow characteristics paired with environmental control system settings are a gap in scholarly literature. Based on the available literature computational fluid dynamics models were created to simulate the airflow around a patient represented by human geometry using commercially available software. In order to compare simulated and experimental results a heated manikin was placed in the MURPHEE aerosol exposure chamber and …
