Neonatal Lead (Pb) Exposure And Dna Methylation Profiles In Dried Bloodspots, Luke Montrose Sep 2020

Neonatal Lead (Pb) Exposure And Dna Methylation Profiles In Dried Bloodspots, Luke Montrose

Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lead (Pb) exposure remains a major concern in the United States (US) and around the world, even following the removal of Pb from gasoline and other products. Environmental Pb exposures from aging infrastructure and housing stock are of particular concern to pregnant women, children, and other vulnerable populations. Exposures during sensitive periods of development are known to influence epigenetic modifications which are thought to be one mechanism of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm. To gain insights into early life Pb exposure-induced health risks, we leveraged neonatal dried bloodspots in a cohort of children from Michigan, US …

The Impact Of Visual Displays On Learning Across The Disciplines: A Systematic Review, Daibao Guo, Erin M. Mctigue, Sharon D. Matthews, Wendi Zimmer Sep 2020

The Impact Of Visual Displays On Learning Across The Disciplines: A Systematic Review, Daibao Guo, Erin M. Mctigue, Sharon D. Matthews, Wendi Zimmer

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

The current systematic review aimed to investigate in what ways the incorporation of visual display tasks benefits K-12 students’ content-area learning. After screening 1693 articles at abstract level and a systematic evaluation of methodological quality, we synthesized 44 articles for this review. The qualitative synthesis of the studies is organized by categories of interaction with visual displays (ViDis), instructional support, and types of knowledge and learning. Overall findings indicate the simple inclusion of visual displays does not guarantee a positive learning effect. More detailed findings distinguish three categories of ViDis: author-provided, student-filled-in, and student-created visual displays. Furthermore, we discuss …

De Oliveira, Rachel Creighton, Jacob Ferguson, Kurt Clemmer, Devon Knight, James Iansavitchous, Danish Mahmood, Mariano Avino, Rodney P. Dekoter

Paediatrics Publications

Precursor B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is caused by genetic lesions in developing B cells that function as drivers for the accumulation of additional mutations in an evolutionary selection process. We investigated secondary drivers of leukemogenesis in a mouse model of B-ALL driven by PU.1/Spi-B deletion (Mb1-CreΔPB). Whole-exome-sequencing analysis revealed recurrent mutations in Jak3 (encoding Janus kinase 3), Jak1, and Ikzf3 (encoding Aiolos). Mutations with a high variant-allele frequency (VAF) were dominated by C¡T transition mutations that were compatible with activation-induced cytidine deaminase, whereas the majority of mutations, with a low VAF, were dominated by C¡A transversions associated with …

Kallikrein-Related Peptidase Mrna Expression In Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Of Salivary Glands: A Polymerase Chain Reaction Study, Zachary Kerr, Alyssa Hayter, Zia Khan, Mark Darling

Paediatrics Publications

Kallikrein-related peptidases (KLKs) are a group of 15 serine proteases implicated in a variety of biological processes. Aberrant expression of KLKs has been associated with the development of certain cancers. However, the role of KLKs in salivary tumors has not been extensively studied. This study evaluated the expression of KLKs in both adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and normal salivary gland tissue. We isolated total RNA from 39 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples, which included 24 ACCs and 15 normal salivary gland tissues. Complementary DNA, synthesized by reverse transcription, was combined with gene specific kallikrein primers (KLK1–KLK15) to allow for quantitative real-time PCR. …

BACKGROUND: Compared with adults, phenotypic characterization of children with asthma is still limited and it remains difficult to predict which children with asthma are at highest risk for poor outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To identify latent classes in a large population of treatment-adherent children with mild to moderate asthma enrolled in clinical trials and determine whether latent class assignment predicts future lung function abnormalities and exacerbation rate.

METHODS: Latent class analysis was performed on 2593 children with mild to moderate asthma aged 5 18 years, with 19 variables encompassing demographic characteristics, medical history, symptoms, lung function, allergic sensitization, and type 2 inflammation. …

Self-Regulation And Emotional Reactivity In Infants With Prenatal Exposure To Opioids And Alcohol, Kathryn G Beauchamp, Jean Lowe, Ronald M Schrader, Shikhar Shrestha, Crystal Aragón, Natalia Moss, Julia M Stephen, Ludmila N Bakhireva

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship

BACKGROUND: Infants with prenatal substance exposure are at increased risk for developmental problems, with self-regulatory challenges being some of the most pronounced. The current study aimed to investigate the extent to which prenatal substance exposure (alcohol, opioids) impacts infant self-regulation during a relational stressor and the association between self-regulation and infant affect.

METHODS: Participants were 100 mother-child dyads recruited prenatally (Mean = 23.8 gestational weeks) and completed the Still Face Paradigm (SFP) when infants were 5 to 8 months of age (Mean = 6.9 months) as part of an ENRICH prospective birth cohort study. Based on prospective repeated assessment of …

Many websites remain non-ADA compliant, containing images which lack accompanying textual descriptions. This leaves sight-impaired individuals unable to fully enjoy the rich wonders of the web. To address this inequity, our research aims to create an autonomous system capable of generating semantically accurate descriptions of images. This problem involves two tasks: recognizing an image and linguistically describing it. Our solution uses state-of-the-art deep learning: employing a convolutional neural network that "learns" to understand images and extracts their salient features, and a recurrent neural network that learns to generate structured, coherent sentences. These two networks are merged to create a single …

Strategy to Achieve Gender Responsiveness in the Regional Scholarship and Innovation Fund (Rsif): 2020-2025

Africa’s development challenges include how to increase agricultural productivity, move beyond resource extraction and farm-based enterprises towards higher value enterprises, reduce environmental degradation, achieve food and nutrition security, and tackle the triple disease burden (non-communicable, communicable, and reproductive health related). Advances in applied science, engineering, and technology (ASET) fields are essential to finding effective solutions to these complex development problems and will require harnessing Africa’s human resources, both women and men (Okeke et al., 2017; Tiedeu, 2019).1 Unfortunately, only a fraction of women’s potential contributions is …

Project ECHO Bibliography

For decades, there have been government funded services to provide healthcare telephonically to remote sites both on the earth and in the air. This capability has evolved into what we now know as telehealth. The use of telehealth dramatically accelerated as a result of concerns for patient and healthcare provider safety during the SARS-CoV2 pandemic. Similarly, concerns regarding transmission of infection have required medical schools to provide robust, easily accessible virtual education options. At short notice, faculties have had to develop new telehealth focused curriculum components. However, telehealth, online education, and internet enabled research should not be simply a new …

Can Self-Determination Theory Be Used To Increase College Student Retention?, Agnieszka Zak-Moskal, Mark J. Garrison Sep 2020

Can Self-Determination Theory Be Used To Increase College Student Retention?, Agnieszka Zak-Moskal, Mark J. Garrison

New York Journal of Student Affairs

This paper first introduces self-determination theory (SDT) to retention researchers and higher education professionals. Highlighted are the three basic psychological needs, that when met, are theorized to give rise to intrinsic motivation, which is associated with high levels of human performance. These are the needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. This theoretical overview is followed by a discussion of how this theory has been applied to understand the role of intrinsic motivation in fostering educational success. An outline of how SDT can be applied to increase college student retention is presented. The second part of the paper applies the understanding …

Malignant Cell-Specific Cxcl14 Promotes Tumor Lymphocyte Infiltration In Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Anuraag Parikh, Juneho Shin, William Faquin, Derrick T Lin, Itay Tirosh, John B Sunwoo, Sidharth V Puram

Open Access Publications

OBJECTIVES: To explore lymphocyte infiltration as a potential mechanism behind CXCL14-mediated tumor growth suppression in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).

METHODS: We analyzed single cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from OSCC to identify expression changes among malignant cells in lymph nodes (LN) versus primary tumors. CXCL14 expression in murine OSCC cell lines was quantified using qRT-PCR. Short hairpin RNA knockdown of CXCL14 was performed in mouse oral cavity (MOC)1 cells, and CXCL14 overexpression was performed in MOC2 cells. Cells in each condition were injected into C57BL/6 mice with and without T cell depletion, and tumor volume was measured. At 30 …

Does Religiosity Affect Attitudes Toward The Ethics Of Tax Evasion? The Case Of Turkey, Robert W. Mcgee, Serkan Benk, Bahad?R Yüzba??, Tamer Budak

College of Business and Economics

This study surveys the opinion of a wide segment of Turkish society on the ethics of tax evasion. The survey instrument includes 18 statements used to justify tax evasion in the past. The research also finds that some reasons to justify tax evasion proved more attractive to participants than others. In our survey, the strongest support for tax evasion was in cases where the government abused human rights, where the government was corrupt or wasted tax funds, or where the taxpayer did not benefit from the tax expenditures. Conversely, the weakest arguments were in cases where the taxpayer did benefit …
