BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

Quality of life (QOL) is a basic concept in a number of disciplines, including social sciences, politics, economics, the environment, psychology, and medicine. Although the term comprises primarily psychological components, it remains a multi-dimensional concept that has been derived from various fields, the most important of which are biology, medicine, psychology, and sociology. Well-being generally includes global judgments of life satisfaction and feelings ranging from depression to joy. The study sought to (1) investigate the sex-related differences on both quality of life (QOL) and well-being. A convenience sample of 382 adults from the Palestinian and Syrian refugees were recruited. The …

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

During the second half of the twentieth century, a time that has been noticeable by rapid urbanization of societies, urban environments have become diminished and dysfunctional. Particularly in the practice of forming urban space and in addition, the design of buildings has been allowed to be bloomed, with the lack of both social and environmental responsibility have turned into revolting influences of the plot. With regards to the Urban Environment, sociological consequences will undermine the amenity value of the social environment if the community and the end user are not satisfied by the incompetence to meet the cultural needs. The …

Imagining The Future Of Medicine Through A Lens Of Prejudice: Lessons From The American Past, Neil Nusbaum Sep 2020

Imagining The Future Of Medicine Through A Lens Of Prejudice: Lessons From The American Past, Neil Nusbaum

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Many healthcare management decisions today, such as those about facility construction, will have impact even decades beyond the traditional 5 or 10 year planning horizon. In order to get some idea of the possibilities and challenges of today’s long range forecasts in healthcare, it is instructive to look at how well similar efforts fared a century ago. Looking in retrospect now, the task of prognostication then was impeded in part by a failure of vision due to prejudicial attitudes of the era.

An Affordable And Portable Palpable System For Sensing Breast Tissue Abnormalities, Cody J. Clarke Sep 2020

An Affordable And Portable Palpable System For Sensing Breast Tissue Abnormalities, Cody J. Clarke

Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship

Due to the high cost of equipment and lack of trained personnel, manual palpation is a preferred alternative breast examination technique over mammography. The process involves a thorough search pattern using trained fingers and applying adequate pressure, with the objective of identifying solid masses from the surrounding breast tissue. However, palpation requires skills that must be obtained through adequate training in order to ensure proper diagnosis. Consequently, palpation performance and reporting techniques have been inconsistent. Automating the palpation technique would optimize the performance of self-breast examination, optimize clinical breast examinations (CBE), and enable the visualization of breast abnormalities as well …

An Experimentally Evaluated Thermodynamic Approach To Estimate Growth Of Photoheterotrophic Purple Non-Sulfur Bacteria, Anna Doloman, Lance C. Seefeldt

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Distribution of energy during the growth and formation of useful chemicals by microorganisms can define the overall performance of a biotechnological system. However, to date, this distribution has not been used to reliably predict growth characteristics of phototrophic microorganisms. The presented research addresses this application by estimating the photon-associated Gibbs energy delivered for the photoheterotrophic growth of purple non-sulfur bacteria and production of dihydrogen. The approach is successfully evaluated with the data from a fed-batch growth of Rhodopseudomonas palustris nifA∗ fixing N2 gas in phototrophic conditions and a reliable prediction of growth characteristics is demonstrated. Additionally, literature-available experimental data is …

Dissertations

This dissertation work is divided into two parts. The first part is focused in the development of methodology for the synthesis of phostones and phosphonosugars and advancement thereof. The second part is focused in the development of affinity probes based on analogs of natural products cyclophostin and the cyclipostins.

Phostone (3) and phosphonosugars are cyclic phosphonates. The anomeric carbon of sugar is replaced by a phosphorus atom. The synthesis of phostones has been achieved starting form the key intermediate, γ,δ-epoxy vinyl phosphonate (1). The palladium catalyzed ring opening of γ,δ-epoxy vinyl phosphonates by a nucleophile results …

Click-Free Synthesis Of A Multivalent Tricyclic Peptide As A Molecular Transporter, Sumit Kumar, Dindyal Mandal, Shaima Ahmed El-Mowafi, Saghar Mozaffari, Rakesh Kumar Tiwari, Keykavous Parang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

The cellular delivery of cell-impermeable and water-insoluble molecules remains an ongoing challenge to overcome. Previously, we reported amphipathic cyclic peptides c[WR]4 and c[WR]5 consisting of alternate arginine and tryptophan residues as nuclear-targeting molecular transporters. These peptides contain an optimal balance of positive charge and hydrophobicity, which is required for interactions with the phospholipid bilayer to facilitate their application as a drug delivery system. To further optimize them, we synthesized and evaluated a multivalent tricyclic peptide as an efficient molecular transporter. The monomeric cyclic peptide building blocks were synthesized using Fmoc/tBu solid-phase chemistry and cyclization in the …

Conservative Spine Surgery: The True "Minimally Invasive" Spine Surgery/Dharmendra Ganesan, Ganesan Dharmendra

Archival Material (2020s)

"Conservative spine surgery" is a concept or perhaps a philosophy that I coined after 12 years of practicing as a consultant neurosurgeon with a subspecialized interest in spinal neurosurgery. UM deals with a plethora of patients with spinal conditions, where degenerative spinal disorder (DSD) is the one most commonly diagnosed. In managing DSD, it is imperative to understand that the symptom of pain could emanate from various anatomical structures from the spine and its surrounding structures. It is also important to appreciate the natural history of these conditions as it is equally important, to be cognizant of the immediate, short …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

In this case report of a patient with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), we describe the occurrence of three sequential complications that have been reported uncommonly in this disease subtype. Firstly, the patient developed hypercalcemia due to elevated 1,25-didydroxyvitamin D. Although hypercalcemia in AITL is not rare (1-2% incidence), this case was unusual in that the complication developed when disease appeared stable and symptomatically, he was doing well otherwise. Hypercalcemia surprisingly resolved a few months later at a time when his disease appeared to be progressing. A year later, the patient presented with digital ischemia necessitating partial amputation of a finger. …

OBJECTIVES: There are currently no studies that have examined whether one dosage can be uniformly applied to different respirator types to effectively decontaminate SARS-CoV-2 on N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). Health care workers have been using this disinfection method during the pandemic. Our objective was to determine the effect of UVC on SARS-CoV-2 inoculated N95 respirators and whether this was respirator material/model type dependent.

METHODS: Four different locations (facepiece and strap) on five different N95 FFR models (3M 1860, 8210, 8511, 9211; Moldex 1511) were inoculated with a 10 μL drop of SARS-CoV-2 viral stock (8 × 10

RESULTS: UVC …

Investigation Of The Interaction Of Gadolinium With Several Organic Ligands And Humic Acid By Ligand Competition Using 4-(2-Pyridylazo)-Resorcinol (Par), Spencer Steinberg, Vernon Hodge, Luis Becerra-Hernandez

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Gd3+ forms a strongly colored complex with 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol (PAR) in aqueous solutions. We characterized the Gd3+-PAR complex in order to use it as a probe of Gd3+ speciation in the presence of environmentally relevant ligands. The formation of the Gd3+-PAR complex was investigated from pH 5 to 8 in the presence of excess PAR. The absorbance of the Gd3+-PAR complex dramatically increased from pH 5 to 8 and application of the method of continuous variation indicates that the complex was primarily 1:2 Gd(PAR)2 at pH 8. Stability constants for Gd3+ with other ligands can be quantified by competitive displacement of …

Human gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts are colonized by diverse polymicrobial communities shortly after birth, which are continuously molded by environmental exposure. The development of the resident microbiota in early life is a critical factor in the maturation of a healthy immune system. Disturbances to the intricate relationship between environmental exposure and maturation of the infant microbiome have been increasingly identified as a potential contributor to a range of childhood diseases. This review details recent evidence that implicates the contribution of gut and airway microbiome to pediatric respiratory health.

Graduate School of Education Publications and Research

Higher education institutions shape the professions which are the conduit for the disciplines’ ways of knowing, the worldview or mindset of the professions, and the intellectual frameworks by which problems and policies are defined. The generational, conscious and unconscious agreements between higher education and the professions perpetuate the status quo, resulting in continued disproportional impacts based on race, gender, ethnicity, language, orientation, and differing abilities in every major industry sector; including education, health, employment, housing, finance, technology and the criminal justice system. Cultural responsive pedagogy provides a process of altering these agreements by surfacing the dual consciousness of our multiple …
