Genetic Variation And Sex Mediate Differential Responses To ∆-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Among Inbred Mice, Cory Parks
Genetic Variation And Sex Mediate Differential Responses To ∆-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Among Inbred Mice, Cory Parks
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The plant Cannabis sativa has been used by people for both recreational and medicinal use for thousands of years, but scientific investigation of the plant and its components didn’t begin until the early nineteen hundreds when Cannabis components known as phytocannabinoids were characterized and later isolated. In the 1970’s, ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was isolated and recognized as the major constituent responsible for the psychoactive and intoxicating effects associated with consumption of cannabis. This opened the door for intensive research in the field that lead to the discovery of the endogenous cannabinoid system and its associated receptors, effectors of signaling, and biosynthetic …

Strain And Stress Relationships For Optical Phonon Modes In Monoclinic Crystals With Β-Ga2O3 As An Example, Rafal Korlacki, Megan Stokey, Alyssa Lynn Mock, Sean Knight, Alexis Papamichail, Vanya Darakchieva, Mathias Schubert
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Strain-stress relationships for physical properties are of interest for heteroepitaxial material systems, where strain and stress are inherent due to thermal expansion and lattice mismatch. We report linear perturbation theory strain and stress relationships for optical phonon modes in monoclinic crystals for strain and stress situations which maintain the monoclinic symmetry of the crystal. By using symmetry group analysis and phonon frequencies obtained under various deformation scenarios from density-functional perturbation theory calculations on β-Ga2O3, we obtain four strain and four stress potential parameters for each phonon mode. We demonstrate that these parameters are sufficient to …

Animals communicate using a diversity of signals produced by a wide array of physical structures. Determining how a signal is produced provides key insights into signal evolution. Here, we examine a complex vibratory mating display produced by male Schizocosa floridana wolf spiders. This display contains three discrete substrate-borne acoustic components (known as “thumps”, “taps”, and “chirps”), each of which is anecdotally associated with the movement of a different body part (the pedipalps, legs, and abdomen respectively). In order to determine the method of production, we employ a combination of high-speed video/audio recordings and SEM imaging of possible sound-producing structures. Previous …

Testing The Hypothesized Antipredator Defence Function Of Stridulation In The Spiny Orb-Weaving Spider, Micrathena Gracilis, Tyler B. Corey, Eileen A. Hebets
Eileen Hebets Publications
The observable diversity of antipredator defenses across organisms demonstrates predation’s impact on trait evolution. The functions of many traits that are presumed to have an antipredator function have never been directly tested. The spiny orb-weaving spider, Micrathena gracilis, for example, stridulates when grasped. While stridulation was first hypothesized to be an antipredator defense nearly 50 years ago, no data exist to support this hypothesis. To explore the form and function of M. gracilis stridulation, we first quantified the behavioral and acoustical properties of sound production. Next, using laboratory assays, we directly tested the effect of stridulation on survival with …

Developing femtosecond resolution methods for directly observing structural dynamics is critical to understanding complex photochemical reaction mechanisms in solution. We have used two recent developments, ultrafast mega-electron-volt electron sources and vacuum compatible sub-micron thick liquid sheet jets, to enable liquid-phase ultrafast electron diffraction (LUED). We have demonstrated the viability of LUED by investigating the photodissociation of tri-iodide initiated with a 400 nm laser pulse. This has enabled the average speed of the bond expansion to be measured during the first 750 fs of dissociation and the geminate recombination to be directly captured on the picosecond time scale.

Although they share many common qualities in design and operation, mesonetworks across the United States were established independently and organically over the last several decades. In numerous instances, the unique ways each network matured and developed new protocols has led to important lessons learned. These experiences have been shared in informal ways among various network operators over the years to promote reliable operation. As existing networks begin to introduce new sensors and technologies, and as new networks come online, there is a common need for guidance on best practices. This paper aims to formally provide recommendations to improve and harmonize …

The Emergence Of New Trends In Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis, Mohammed A. Alaidarous
The Emergence Of New Trends In Clinical Laboratory Diagnosis, Mohammed A. Alaidarous
Saudi Medical Journal
Diagnostic processes typically rely on traditional and laborious methods, that are prone to human error, resulting in frequent misdiagnosis of diseases. Computational approaches are being increasingly used for more precise diagnosis of the clinical pathology, diagnosis of genetic and microbial diseases, and analysis of clinical chemistry data. These approaches are progressively used for improving the reliability of testing, resulting in reduced diagnostic errors. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based computational approaches mostly rely on training sets obtained from patient data stored in clinical databases. However, the use of AI is associated with several ethical issues, including patient privacy and data ownership. The capacity …
In Vitro Invistigation Of The Heterodimerization Between Angiotensin Ii And Thrombin Receptors, Isra Mansur Al Zamel
In Vitro Invistigation Of The Heterodimerization Between Angiotensin Ii And Thrombin Receptors, Isra Mansur Al Zamel
Biology Theses
The renin angiotensin system (RAS) through its hormone angiotensin (AngII) and the protease thrombin are two major physiological regulators of vascular and renal functions. RAS is involved in the regulation of blood pressure and water-electrolytes hemostasis, while thrombin has a crucial role in platelets activation and thrombosis. The interplay between these two systems at the physiological and the pathophysiological levels has been documented in many studies. However, such an interplay at the pharmacological level between the AngII and thrombin receptors still has not been explored. Our study aimed to explore the interplay between the AngII type 1 receptor (AT1R) and …

Molecular And Physiological Assessment Of Salinity Stress Tolerance In Transgenic Arabidopsis Lines Expressing A Solanum Tuberosum Ribosome-Binding Protein, Onoud Rashed Saeed Ali Alyammahi
Biology Theses
Ribosomal proteins are highly conserved components of basal cellular organelles, primarily associated with translation of mRNA leading to protein synthesis. Additionally, some of these proteins are known to play critical role in plants RNA metabolism during stress responses, growth, and development. In this study, transgenic Arabidopsis plants expressing a ribosomal protein S27 (hereafter D26) isolated from Solanum tuberosum was subjected to NaCl-induced salinity stress conditions, to evaluate their putative stress resistance. Transgenic plants were exposed to high salinity stress, induced by 200 mM NaCl and physiological and biochemical assays were performed. The D26 transgenic plants demonstrated improved plant height and …

Wnt Signaling Determines Body Axis Polarity In Regenerating Hydra Tissue Fragments, R. Wang, R. E. Steele, Eva-Maria S. Collins
Biology Faculty Works
How an animal establishes its body axis is a fundamental question in developmental biology. The freshwater cnidarian Hydra is an attractive model for studying axis formation because it is radially symmetric, with a single oral-aboral axis. It was recently proposed that the orientation of the new body axis in a regenerating Hydra polyp is determined by the oral-aboral orientation of the actin-myosin contractile processes (myonemes) in the animal’s outer epithelial layer. However, it remained unclear how the oral-aboral polarity of the body axis would be defined. As Wnt signaling is known to control axis polarity in Hydra and bilaterians, we …
