Mapping Land Use And Land Cover Change And Its Impact On Landscape Structure And Amphibian Functional Connectivity In The Prairie Pothole Region, Taylor Holm
Theses and Dissertations
Monitoring land use and land cover (LULC) change and its effect on habitat availability and connectivity is crucial for species conservation and management. This is most efficiently accomplished at a sufficiently broad scale using remote sensing technology. Current approaches benefit from freely available data sources such as National Land Cover Database (NLCD), derived from 30 m Landsat imagery. However, temporal frequency and spatial resolution of NLCD may be insufficient for some applications. Specifically, 30 m resolution data may not detect small or narrow landscape features that may be important habitat for small animals such as amphibians. Other available data sources, …

Mountain Lions In North Dakota: A Public Opinion Survey, Theodore A. Darnell
Mountain Lions In North Dakota: A Public Opinion Survey, Theodore A. Darnell
Theses and Dissertations
Breeding mountain lion (Puma concolor) populations currently inhabit the western portion of North Dakota. In recent years, apparent increases in human-lion interactions across North Dakota, and other Midwest states, have challenged wildlife managers who strive to balance biological and social carrying capacities of these animals. In 2019, we surveyed 2,000 residents of North Dakota, USA, using a self-administered mail survey to discern knowledge of and attitudes towards mountain lions, and to explore whether the presence of these animals would influence decisions to recreate in western North Dakota. Our questionnaire included 12 questions designed to ascertain respondent attitudes towards mountain lions. …

Montana Coaches' Perceptions On Including Transgender Athletes In High School Interscholastic Sports And Its Effect On Team Chemistry, David L. Woods Ii
Theses and Dissertations
The eligibility of transgender students to participate in high school athletic sports is a polarizing topic in the United States of America. Questions of fairness within each competitive sport, along with precedents set in law and policy, both by the United States and by International Sporting Organizations such as the International Olympic Committee, shape arguments for or against transgender high school students' eligibility. Each state faces the decision of whether to base high school transgender athletes' eligibility in high school sports according to their gender identity, or their sex assigned at birth.
The study aimed to identify Montana high school …
Wastewater Treatment Fatty Acids For Biodiesel Production, Zachary Christman
Wastewater Treatment Fatty Acids For Biodiesel Production, Zachary Christman
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Wastewater scum is the thick oily substance that floats on top of the primary and secondary tanks within a wastewater treatment plant. Scum has a 30% to 60% lipid content making it an excellent resource for the biodiesel industry. Also the use of scum would reduce the cost of current management practices such as landfill disposal or incineration. In this article there is an overview of lipid byproducts currently being produced at wastewater treatment plants today. This is followed by a presentation showing a full length process for turning wastewater scum into biodiesel raw material.
Shrimp Farming In Thailand: A Pathway To Sustainability, Warinyupa Phornprapha
Shrimp Farming In Thailand: A Pathway To Sustainability, Warinyupa Phornprapha
Pomona Senior Theses
Throughout this thesis I have laid out several factors that have contributed to the sustainability of shrimp farming in Thailand, and if sustainability whilst maintaining production can ever be achieved. To find out the current situation of shrimp farming in Thailand, the history of global and Thai shrimp farming is described. The social and environmental problems of the unsustainable history of shrimp farming in Thailand is then considered. Solutions to these effects conclude that it is up to the consumer to demand for better regulations from the government and the shrimp companies to ensure a sustainable future for shrimp farming …
Enlivening Spaces For The Dead: The Relevance Of Cemeteries In The 21st Century, Caroline Koh Smith
Enlivening Spaces For The Dead: The Relevance Of Cemeteries In The 21st Century, Caroline Koh Smith
Pomona Senior Theses
Current cemetery practices can be harmful to public health and local ecologies and be intensive users of resources such as water and energy. However, given their spiritual benefits to mourners and community members, I believe that cemeteries are still justified in their construction for societies that wish to have a relationship with their dead. With a growing and aging population, more spaces will be used to house the dead; I examined how these could spaces benefit the living as well. Cemeteries can be designed within natural systems, both in landscaping and in burial, as well as spaces for communities and …
Short-Term Estimate Of Finfish Bycatch Discards In The Inshore Artisanal Shrimp Fishery Of Guyana, Leanna Kalicharan, Hazel A. Oxenford
Short-Term Estimate Of Finfish Bycatch Discards In The Inshore Artisanal Shrimp Fishery Of Guyana, Leanna Kalicharan, Hazel A. Oxenford
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The artisanal shrimp fishery in Guyana is important for livelihood and food security, involving around 300 vessels owned and crewed exclusively by Guyanese nationals. This fishery uses Chinese seines and operates in major river estuaries. It targets penaeid shrimp, but also retains some finfish and is known to discard a significant but undocumented quantity of smaller finfish bycatch. The lack of knowledge regarding the bycatch is a concern for fishery management and biodiversity conservation. In this study, we quantify for the first time the finfish bycatch discards through onboard observations (July—August 2016) of a single typical vessel operating in the …
Gulf Coast Marine Laboratories Past, Present And Future, Donald F. Boesch
Gulf Coast Marine Laboratories Past, Present And Future, Donald F. Boesch
Gulf and Caribbean Research
I spent my nearly 50—year career in marine science working at marine laboratories, most of that as a chief executive officer. So, it is appropriate that my reflections are about marine laboratories, rather than my own science. After relating my career course, I turn my attention to the history and development of marine laboratories along the U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Surprisingly, the region’s first laboratory was actually constructed in 1903 at Cameron, LA, but operated less than a decade before closing. It was not until after World War II that the university—affiliated marine laboratories of today …
Exploring Scale In Ocean And Coastal Governance In The Wider Caribbean, Robin C. Mahon
Exploring Scale In Ocean And Coastal Governance In The Wider Caribbean, Robin C. Mahon
Gulf and Caribbean Research
An early childhood attraction to the sea led to a career in marine ecology, fisheries and ocean and coastal governance. This paper tracks the development of my career from tertiary education, through a variety of jobs and positions with government, private sector, international and academic organizations. These positions took me from national to regional levels of governance, then down to local levels and ultimately back up to regional and global levels. At each stage new concepts join those already there to build what is ultimately a multilevel perspective on ocean and coastal governance. This perspective is built around ideas of …

Habitat Characterization Of Juvenile Atlantic Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus) In Isle Of Youth, Cuba, Zenaida M. Navarro-Martínez, Jorge Angulo-Valdés, Lisandra García-Córdova, Aaron Adams
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Tarpon is considered a ‘Vulnerable’ species by IUCN but is also a highly prized recreational species. It is reportedly abundant in Cuba and may be threatened by high levels of fishing pressure. However, the current knowledge about Tarpon habitat characteristics and ecology in Cuba is very poor, which limit any attempt for its management and conservation. Here we summarize abiotic characteristics of juvenile Tarpon habitats in Lanier Swamp, Isle of Youth, Cuba, which is a RAMSAR site and Faunal Refuge. Three locations in Lanier Swamp were sampled for juvenile Tarpon presence during 2015-2017: Colony Lagoon (CL), Punta Francés Lagoon (PFL) …

Estimates of Colombian Caribbean coral percent cover in the Southern Caribbean are consistent with those throughout the Caribbean Sea, which has declined to about 10% of historical levels in the last few decades. Human activities like destructive fishing techniques in the marine parks have degraded the reefs over the last few decades. Colombia’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have thousands of square kilometers to map and patrol and few resources to devote to scientific and restoration efforts. Efforts to implement sexual reproduction techniques for restoration are starting to successfully propagate and settle corals on ceramic plates for reef deployment in the …

Size At Maturation, Spawning Variability And Fecundity In The Queen Conch, Aliger Gigas, Richard S. Appeldoorn
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The queen conch (Aliger gigas) resource is one of the most important in the Caribbean. While aspects of queen conch reproduction have been studied, e.g., size—at—maturity, spawning season, and density—based Allee effects, there is little information on other important aspects. From 210 lipped queen conch collected off southwest Puerto Rico, histological examination of gonads showed that 50% maturation occurred at 9 mm lip thickness. Experimental caged queen conch held on a natural spawning ground were monitored across the spawning season to evaluate fecundity and its variability across individuals and between nominal density treatments (2,000 vs 143 conch/ha). Near …

Diet Of The Blacktip Shark (Carcharhinus Limbatus) In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Sarah R. Alewijnse, R. J. David Wells
Gulf and Caribbean Research
The stomach contents of 90 Blacktip Shark (Carcharhinus limbatus) specimens caught in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) were examined. Stomach contents were identified to the lowest possible taxon, and quantified using percent weight, percent number, percent frequency of occurrence, and percent index of relative importance (IRI). Teleosts were the dominant prey group (98.95% IRI), although most were unidentified (61.70% IRI). Of identified teleost species, Atlantic Croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) (28.43% IRI), and Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia patronus) (2.31% IRI) were the most important. Crustaceans (0.65% IRI), mollusks (0.46% IRI), and elasmobranchs (0.03% IRI) formed a minor …
Pelagic Sargassum Prediction And Marine Connectivity In The Tropical Atlantic, Donald R. Johnson, James S. Franks, Hazel A. Oxenford, Shelly-Ann L. Cox
Pelagic Sargassum Prediction And Marine Connectivity In The Tropical Atlantic, Donald R. Johnson, James S. Franks, Hazel A. Oxenford, Shelly-Ann L. Cox
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Since 2011, pelagic Sargassum has experienced extraordinary blooms in the Tropical Atlantic where a system of persistent but seasonally variable currents has retained and consolidated it in large masses. Although beneficial at sea, principally as a unique pelagic habitat, when Sargassum inundates the nearshore environment it can have catastrophic effects on tourism, fisheries, health, and local ecosystems. Providing advanced warning of arrival dates of large masses of Sargassum is critical for enabling preparations and planning for its removal, use, and mitigation. Predictions of arrival time and location involve satellite identification of Sargassum at sea together with ocean current data for …

Pell-Lucas Collocation Method To Solve High-Order Linear Fredholm-Volterra Integro-Differential Equations And Residual Correction, Şuayi̇p Yüzbaşi, Gamze Yildirim
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this article, a collocation method based on Pell-Lucas polynomials is studied to numerically solve higher order linear Fredholm-Volterra integro differential equations (FVIDE). The approximate solutions are assumed in form of the truncated Pell-Lucas polynomial series. By using Pell-Lucas polynomials and relations of their derivatives, the solution form and its derivatives are brought to matrix forms. By applying the collocation method based on equally spaced collocation points, the method reduces the problem to a system of linear algebraic equations. Solution of this system determines the coefficients of assumed solution. Error estimation is made and also a method with the help …

Positive Periodic Solutions For A Class Of Second-Order Differential Equations With State-Dependent Delays, Ahleme Bouakkaz, Rabah Khemis
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we consider a class of second order differential equations with iterative source term. The main results are obtained by virtue of a Krasnoselskii fixed point theorem and some useful properties of a Green's function which allows us to prove the existence of positive periodic solutions. Finally, an example is included to illustrate the correctness of our results.

On Ulam's Type Stability Criteria For Fractional Integral Equations Including Hadamard Type Singular Kernel, Yasemi̇n Başci, Süleyman Öğrekçi̇, Adi̇l Misir
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this paper, we deal with the Hyers-Ulam-Rassias (HUR) and Hyers-Ulam (HU) stability of Hadamard type fractional integral equations on compact intervals. The stability conditions are developed using a new generalized metric (GM) definition and the fixed point technique by motivating Wang and Lin Ulam's type stability of Hadamard type fractional integral equations. Filomat 2014; 28(7): 1323-1331. Moreover, our approach is efficient and ease in use than to the previously studied approaches. Finally, we give two examples to explain our main results.

Lerch Matrix Collocation Method For 2d And 3d Volterra Type Integral And Second Order Partial Integro Differential Equations Together With An Alternative Error Analysis And Convergence Criterion Based On Residual Functions, Seda Çayan, Mehmet Sezer
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this study, second order linear Volterra partial integro-differential equation with two- and three-dimensional are solved by collocation method based on Lerch polynomials. This method is composed of the operational matrix and collocation methods, which are based upon the matrix forms of the Lerch polynomials with the parameter $\lambda$ and Taylor polynomials, and their derivatives and integrals. The approximate solutions of the mentioned equations are investigated in terms of the Lerch polynomials the different values of $\lambda$. Also, to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the present method, an alternative convergence criterion along with error analysis depending on residual function …

Pre-Clinical Models Of Small Cell Lung Cancer And The Validation Of Therapeutic Targets, Jane S.Y. Sui, Petra Martin, Steven G. Gray
Articles
Introduction: Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive form of lung cancer that has a dismal prognosis. One of the factors hindering therapeutic developments for SCLC is that most SCLC is not surgically resected resulting in a paucity of material for analysis. To address this, significant efforts have been made by investigators to develop pre-clinical models of SCLC allowing for downstream target identification in this difficult to treat cancer.
Areas covered: In this review, we describe the current pre-clinical models that have been developed to interrogate SCLC, and outline the benefits and limitations associated with each. Using examples …
Polarization Of Neural Codes, Katie Christensen, Hamid Kulosman
Polarization Of Neural Codes, Katie Christensen, Hamid Kulosman
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
The neural rings and ideals as an algebraic tool for analyzing the intrinsic structure of neural codes were introduced by C. Curto, V. Itskov, A. Veliz-Cuba, and N. Youngs in 2013. Since then they were investigated in several papers, including the 2017 paper by S. Güntürkün, J. Jeffries, and J. Sun, in which the notion of polarization of neural ideals was introduced. In our paper we extend their ideas by introducing the notions of polarization of motifs and neural codes. We show that the notions that we introduce have very nice properties which allow the studying of the intrinsic structure …

A Reduced Computational Matrix Approach With Convergence Estimation For Solving Model Differential Equations Involving Specific Nonlinearities Of Quartic Type, Ömür Kivanç Kürkçü
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
This study aims to efficiently solve model differential equations involving specific nonlinearities of quartic type by proposing a reduced computational matrix approach based on the generalized Mott polynomial. This method presents a reduced matrix expansion of the generalized Mott polynomial with the parameter-$\alpha$, matrix equations, and Chebyshev--Lobatto collocation points. The simplicity of the method provides fast computation while eliminating an algebraic system of nonlinear equations, which arises from the matrix equation. The method also scrutinizes the consistency of the solutions due to the parameter-$\alpha$. The oscillatory behavior of the obtained solutions on long time intervals is simulated via a coupled …

A series of lysine-based vinyl sulfone peptidomimetics were synthesised and evaluated for anti-trypanosomal activity against bloodstream forms of T. brucei. This focused set of compounds, varying in the P3 position, were accessed in a divergent manner from a common intermediate (ammonium salt 8). Several P3 analogues exhibited sub-micromolar EC50 values, with thiourea 14, urea 15 and amide 21 representing the most potent anti-trypanosomal derivatives of the series. In order to establish an in vitro selectivity index the most active anti-trypanosomal compounds were also assessed for their impact on cell viability and cytotoxity effects in mammalian cells. Encouragingly, all compounds only …

Herein we report an in-depth study on the cytotoxic mechanism of action of four developmental cytotoxic copper(II) complexes: [Cu(phen)2]2+ (Cu-Phen); [Cu(DPQ)(Phen)]2+ (Cu-DPQ-Phen); [Cu(DPPZ)(Phen)]2+; and [Cu(DPPN)(Phen)]2+ (where Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, DPQ = dipyrido[3,2-f:20,30-h]quinoxaline, DPPZ = dipyrido[3,2-a:20,30-c]phenazine, and DPPN = benzo[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:20,30-c]phenazine). This complex class is known for its DNA intercalative properties and recent evidence—derived from an in vivo proteomic study—supports the potential targeting of mitochondrial function. Therefore, we focused on mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis related to cytotoxic activity and the potential impact these agents have on mitochondrial function. The Cu(II) complexes demonstrated superior activity regardless of aromatic extension within the phenazine ligand to the …
