Phenolic Acid Analogues As A Potential Drug Formulation For Inflammatory Diseases, Haleema Irfan, Siddharth S. Kesharwani Ph.D, Foram Madiyar
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
Phenolic Acid Analogs as a Potential Drug Formulation for Inflammatory Diseases: We seek to establish the link between toll-like receptors (TLR) in the pathogenesis of inflammation and formulate a phenolic acid analog as a potential drug formulation for inflammatory diseases. We developed a stable drug-polymer complex of a phenolic acid using pH-sensitive polymers that will target inflammation. Various analogs were synthesized with nano-co-precipitation experimentation. Using a variety of polymers, solvents, and stabilizers the most effective combination for optimal delivery was determined. The particle size, drug loading, and dissolution profile under various pH are identified with various polymers. The formulated complex …
The Impact Of Hemp Cropping Systems On Soil Quality In Western Kentucky, Jack Eaker
The Impact Of Hemp Cropping Systems On Soil Quality In Western Kentucky, Jack Eaker
Scholars Week
Recently, hemp farming systems are increasingly popular in Kentucky replacing tobacco cropping systems. However, the study on the impacts of hemp cropping on soil properties is rarely conducted, resulting in limited data on soil’s behavior/changes under these management practices. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine soil characteristics including compaction, acidity level, moisture level, and water retention. The measurements were collected from three different hemp fields, three crop rotation studies ( in 2020 - corn, soybean and tobacco) and a bare field adjacent to these fields. All fields are located at Murray State University West Farm, Calloway County, …

China’S Illegal Organ Trade: From Executed Prisoners To Organ Tourism To Falun Gong, Adrienne Thompson
China’S Illegal Organ Trade: From Executed Prisoners To Organ Tourism To Falun Gong, Adrienne Thompson
West Virginia University Historical Review
As worldwide populations continue to rise, the constant necessity for life-saving organs for terminally and chronically ill patients has become extremely vital and profitable to medical centers across the globe. Since China’s preliminary debut in the international organ donation and transplantation system in the late 1960s, various scholars, journalists, and health professionals across the globe have demonstrated outright shock at the massive influx and seemingly endless supply of transferable organs emanating from Chinese transplant centers and hospitals. Investigations have shown that China has been actively harvesting organs from recently executed prisoners and incarcerated Falun Gong practitioners. Regardless of numerous outside …

The Real Child Welfare System, Najee Williams
The Real Child Welfare System, Najee Williams
English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
Child welfare began as a series of different policies created to ensure children and families could receive aid when needed. The well-intentioned program has saved countless children and families. Yet we have somehow arrived at a time where if the child welfare program is mentioned it leaves a bitter taste in our mouth. Delving into this I aspire to educate others on the hardships of child welfare and where the tainted image derived from. Finding no singular source, I raise questions such as the following to gain different forms of clarity. Should the parents deemed unfit be a source of …

Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization And Bioenergy Crop Species On Central Tendency And Spatial Heterogeneity Of Soil Glycosidase Activities, Min Yuan, Jianjun Duan, Jianwei Li, Siyang Jian, Lahiru Gamage, Kudjo E. Dzantor, Dafeng Hui, Philip A. Fay
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Extracellular glycosidases in soil, produced by microorganisms, act as major agents for decomposing labile soil organic carbon (e.g., cellulose). Soil extracellular glycosidases are significantly affected by nitrogen (N) fertilization but fertilization effects on spatial distributions of soil glycosidases have not been well addressed. Whether the effects of N fertilization vary with bioenergy crop species also remains unclear. Based on a 3-year fertilization experiment in Middle Tennessee, USA, a total of 288 soil samples in topsoil (0–15 cm) were collected from two 15 m2 plots under three fertilization treatments in switchgrass (SG: Panicum virgatum L.) and gamagrass (GG: Tripsacum dactyloides L.) …

Seed Quality And Dormancy Of Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.), Sabry G. Elias, Yea-Ching Wu, David C. Stimpson
Seed Quality And Dormancy Of Hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.), Sabry G. Elias, Yea-Ching Wu, David C. Stimpson
Journal of Agricultural Hemp Research
Hemp has great potential as cash crop for growers in the US because of its multiple uses in food, pharmaceutical, and industrial products. Seed quality and dormancy research had been put off for decades. The indeterminate flowering pattern of hemp results in harvesting seeds with varying maturity levels, affecting their quality. The objectives of this study were to: 1) investigate the differences in quality of seeds harvested from different locations on the same plant, 2) determine suitable viability and vigor tests for evaluating hemp seeds, and 3) examine the extent of dormancy in newly harvested seeds and develop a dormancy-breaking …

Strain And Stress Relationships For Optical Phonon Modes In Monoclinic Crystals With Β-Ga2O3 As An Example, Rafal Korlacki, Megan Stokey, A. Mock, Sean Knight, A. Papamichail, V. Darakchieva, Mathias Schubert
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Strain-stress relationships for physical properties are of interest for heteroepitaxial material systems, where strain and stress are inherent due to thermal expansion and lattice mismatch. We report linear perturbation theory strain and stress relationships for optical phonon modes in monoclinic crystals for strain and stress situations which maintain the monoclinic symmetry of the crystal. By using symmetry group analysis and phonon frequencies obtained under various deformation scenarios from density-functional perturbation theory calculations on β-Ga2O3, we obtain four strain and four stress potential parameters for each phonon mode. We demonstrate that these parameters are sufficient to …

Due to the emissions of air pollutants, acid rain in southern China poses a great threat to terrestrial ecosystems. However, its influences on ecological processes such as litter decomposition and soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation are still not clear. The aim of this study was to understand the potential mechanisms of carbon sequestration change in response to long-term acid rain in a subtropical forest. A field experiment with simulated acid rain (SAR) treatment was conducted in a monsoon evergreen broadleaf forest in southern China. Four levels of SAR treatment were implemented by irrigating the plots with water of different pH …

Biology
Early evidence suggests that DNA methylation can mediate phenotypic responses of marine calcifying species to ocean acidification (OA). Few studies, however, have explicitly studied DNA methylation in calcifying tissues through time. Here, we examined the phenotypic and molecular responses in the extrapallial fluid and mantle (fluid and tissue at the calcification site) in adult eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) exposed to experimental OA over 80 days. Oysters were reared under three experimental pCO2 treatments (“control,” 580 μatm; “moderate OA,” 1,000 μatm; “high OA,” 2,800 μatm) and sampled at 6 time points (24 h−80 days). We found that high OA initially induced …
