Syllabus Language, Teaching Style, And Instructor Self-Perception: Toward Congruence, Christopher Richmann, Courtney Kurinec, Matthew Millsap Jan 2020

Syllabus Language, Teaching Style, And Instructor Self-Perception: Toward Congruence, Christopher Richmann, Courtney Kurinec, Matthew Millsap

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

As with all language, the words of a syllabus carry emotional associations. Previous literature has not objective-ly measured the emotional associations of syllabus language or explored the relationship between instructors’ teaching style and the emotional associations of syllabus language. Using the Pleasure-Arousal-Dominance (PAD) framework, this article reports baseline measurements for syllabus language, investigates the relationship be-tween Grasha’s teaching styles and instructors’ self-perceived emotional associations with teaching, and compares instructors’ self-perceptions with the emotional associations of their syllabus language. Moderate correlations between teaching PAD scores and Grasha’s teaching style inventory suggest the emotion that may connect with concrete teaching attitudes and …

Comparing Mastery-Based Testing With Traditional Testing In Calculus Ii, Amanda Harsy, Alyssa Hoofnagle Jan 2020

Comparing Mastery-Based Testing With Traditional Testing In Calculus Ii, Amanda Harsy, Alyssa Hoofnagle

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The authors present the results of quantitative data and student feedback from a two-year study of the effects of a new assessment model called “mastery-based testing.” In mastery-based testing, students are given problems in which they can only receive full credit for the problem after they demonstrate mastery of the objective being assessed. This method strives to increase complete understanding of concepts through a growth-mindset approach to learning in addition to helping alleviate math anxiety. In this study, we compare the impact of mastery-based testing with traditional testing in six Calculus II classes. The data sources for the project included …

This study explored the relationship between attachment and sexual risk-taking behaviors in emerging adulthood. Understanding and identifying the variables that influence sexual risk behaviors are important to the design and implementation of therapeutic interventions and psychoeducation. It was hypothesized that there is a statistically significant relationship between attachment and increased levels of sexual risk-taking behaviors in emerging adults. To investigate the research hypothesis, this study used a quantitative correlational design to examine the relationship(s) between the variables. The participants completed three online questionnaires: a demographic questionnaire, the Sexual Risk Survey (SRS), and the Relationship Questionnaire (RQ). Results suggested that there …

Tunable Refractive Index Through Spatially Modified Nanoparticle Films For Long-Range Spr Biosensing Applications, Stephen Joshua Binderup Jan 2020

Tunable Refractive Index Through Spatially Modified Nanoparticle Films For Long-Range Spr Biosensing Applications, Stephen Joshua Binderup

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Despite optics and refraction being among the oldest scientific principles, material limitations have prevented scientists from taking full advantage of the potential this technology holds. Indeed, films with designer optical properties have potential for use in exotic cloaking architectures, advanced waveguides, and precise optical biosensors. This thesis focuses on the fabrication methodology for making thin films with refractive index tuned to a desired value through self-assembly of amorphous nanoparticle films made of organosilicate materials. The inclusion of a slowly evaporating polymer phase along with the organosilicate nanoparticles results in nanopores formed within the film, which effectively reduce the film’s refractive …

We previously discovered microRNAs (miRNAs) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that differentiate Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients from Controls. Here we examined the performance of 37 candidate AD miRNA biomarkers in a new and independent cohort of CSF from 47 AD patients and 71 Controls on custom TaqMan arrays. We employed a consensus ranking approach to provide an overall priority score for each miRNA, then used multimarker models to assess the relative contributions of the top-ranking miRNAs to differentiate AD from Controls. We assessed classification performance of the top-ranking miRNAs when combined with apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) genotype status or CSF amyloid-β42 (Aβ42):total …

Cultural Humility In Community Practice: Reflections From The Neighborhood Story Project, Amie Thurber Jan 2020

Cultural Humility In Community Practice: Reflections From The Neighborhood Story Project, Amie Thurber

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although cultural humility is frequently emphasized in social work education as a lifelong commitment to reflection and action, there are few examples of what this looks like in practice—particularly outside the scope of clinical health settings. This paper situates the need for practitioner reflections on cultural humility and offers an autoethnographic case study of efforts to cultivate cultural humility in myself and among participants in a neighborhood-based action research project. I consider cultural humility from three relational positions: holding oneself accountable, creating conditions for cultural humility within groups, and acknowledging how group members co-create conditions for cultural humility.

Integration Of Steam With Allyl-Isothiocyanate For Soil Disinfestation, Dong Sub Kim, Mark Hoffmann, Steven Kim, Bertha A. Scholler, Steven A. Fennimore

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Steam has long been used to disinfest greenhouse soils. However, there is increasing interest in expanding the use of steam for in-field soil disinfestation as an alternative to chemical fumigants. Previous studies demonstrated that allyl-isothiocyanate (AITC) reduced viability of weed seeds and plant pathogen propagules, but AITC has a low vapor pressure and is relatively immobile in soil. Heat has been used in the past to enhance the mobility of soil fumigants such as methyl bromide (i.e., “hot gassing”). The effect of steam heat on the mobility of AITC is unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate the …

Community Violence Exposure Among Ethnic Minority Youth: Understanding The Predictive Roles Of Depressive Symptoms And Risky Behavior In A Community Sample, Amanda Nicole Burnside

Dissertations

Ethnic-minority youth residing in urban communities are disproportionately impacted by community violence exposure (ECV), and despite decades of research, rates of ECV in youth continue to increase. Further, person-based analyses have demonstrated variability in rates of ECV, even among youth who share similar risky demographic factors and it is important to examine the utility of psychological factors as predictors of ECV. Drawing from public health frameworks and the reciprocal-stress model, the current study seeks to better understand the longitudinal relationship between various components of depressive symptoms (depressed affect, somatic symptoms, depressive cognitions, suicidal thoughts and behaviors) in the prediction of …

Suffocated Cd8 T Cells In The Hypoxic Tumor Microenvironment, Lourdes Beatriz Plaza Rojas Jan 2020

Suffocated Cd8 T Cells In The Hypoxic Tumor Microenvironment, Lourdes Beatriz Plaza Rojas

Dissertations

Hypoxia is a common feature of solid tumors that plays an important role in angiogenesis, malignant progression and metastatic development. However, its impact on T cell anti-tumor responses is less known. We determined that CD8 tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) tend to localize to non-hypoxic tumor areas, suggesting a susceptibility to tumor-associated hypoxia. This led us to further study the effects of hypoxia in vitro by culturing spleen-derived mouse T cells in a humidified chamber at 0.5% O2, 5% CO2 and 37 °C. We found that T cell proliferation and effector function are reduced by hypoxia, severely affecting inflammatory cytokine production. …

Structural Basis For The Stereoselective Epoxidation Reaction In Polyether Natural Product Biosynthesis, Qian Wang

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Polycyclic polyether natural products have received much attention due to their diverse biological activities, ranging from extreme toxicity to therapeutic properties, including antimicrobial, antifungal, and anticancer activities. They are featured by multiple cyclic ether groups that vary in the number, size, and arrangement. Ionophore polyethers contain multiple tetrahydrofuran and tetrahydropyran rings connected by either spiroketal systems or carbon-carbon single bonds. Over the past 40 years, significant progress has been made in deciphering polyether biosynThesis pathways. Remarkably, all members of the polycyclic polyether family are thought to be generated via a common biosynthetic scheme. In 1983, Cane, Celmer, and Westly proposed …

Synthesis Of Nanotemplated, Glucose-Derived Adsorbents For The Removal Of Organic And Inorganic Pollutants From Water, Luis Alfonso Barrera

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

With an ever-present rise in population, along with an increase in industrial and manufacturing plants, contamination of potable water has become a global concern. While water treatment facilities exist which can help with the purification of water from bacterial and organic contaminants, these facilities are expensive to set in place and maintain. Therefore, in impoverished areas, point of use (POU) purification systems are often preferred, such as filters made from activated carbon. These filters are inexpensive and relatively easy to install and use. However, while activated carbons generally display excellent adsorption capabilities towards organic contaminants, their adsorption towards inorganic pollutants …

In addition, we present the quantum chemistry calculation method used in this paper called Fermi-Lowdin Self-Interaction Correction (FLOSIC), including the base code it was implemented on, the Naval Research Laboratory Molecular Orbital Library (NRLMOL) Code, and the resulting modified code simply called FLOSIC. Furthermore, we explore …

Reconciling Carbon Flux Discrepancies In A Desert Environment: Characterizing Influences Of Soil Processes Using Automated Co2 Flux Chambers, Alejandro Lara Jan 2020

Reconciling Carbon Flux Discrepancies In A Desert Environment: Characterizing Influences Of Soil Processes Using Automated Co2 Flux Chambers, Alejandro Lara

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Dryland ecosystems play a fundamental role in controlling the balance of carbon on a global scale. These ecosystems dominate the inter-annual variability of carbon uptake by terrestrial ecosystems, and this is driven by temperature and precipitation patterns. Despite this global importance, there are some important discrepancies that have been reported between CO2 fluxes measured with differing techniques, particularly between eddy covariance tower measurements of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of carbon (C) versus on-the-ground methods such as chambers and biomass surveys. The discrepancy is a consequence of instrumentation and measurement technique differences; yet, its biological origins remain unknown. The goal of …

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics And Machine Learning To Predict Sled Profile During High Speed Water Braking At Holloman High Speed Test Track, Jose A. Terrazas

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Accurate prediction of a rocket sled test profile and water braking phenomena has potential to result in radical changes in designs of specific sleds and provide greater confidence of braking mechanism and recovery of critical infrastructures. Understanding the water's behavior with the sled is critical to predicting how the water could damage the sled and affect recoverability of the sled and determine success of the missions. Traditionally, sled design for the test missions had been guided by empirical/hand calculations to estimate the forces on various components. The calculations involved various approximations to arrive at the force balance law and predict …
