“If I Was A Man, Then I’D Be The Man”: Understandings Of Gender, Race, And Social Class In Postfeminist Popular Culture, Jaclyn Griffith

Open Access Master's Theses

The following thesis is an analysis of the political messaging used by pop singer-songwriters Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift to construct their careers. Specifically, it focuses on how these two artists use their experiences of gender, race, and social class to actively effect change and empower themselves, and what expectations audiences have for them to do so and why. Grande and Swift experience sexism as women in a patriarchy, but both use their positions as subjugated members of society to create a profit and satisfy the public’s demand that they take socially progressive political stances, which earns them financial and …

Native American Marine Resource Management In Rhode Island Pre And Post Contact, Sarah Bowen Jan 2020

Native American Marine Resource Management In Rhode Island Pre And Post Contact, Sarah Bowen

Open Access Master's Theses

This study examines Native American marine resource management as a coastal adaptation in Rhode Island. It argues that marine resource management techniques were developed by indigenous people between the Archaic and the Late Woodland period, and uses Rhode Island’s salt pond region as a case study. It then looks at how European settlement altered Native American coastal adaptations and changed marine resource management through commodification and eventually loss of access to subsistence bases. The study contrasts Native American management practices with European resource use through the end of the colonial period, and relates how indigenous conservation efforts are applicable to …

Underlying Values In Coral Restoration: Responses To The Coral Crisis, Cassandra Wilson

Open Access Master's Theses

Controversy has long existed among global coral experts over how to solve the coral crisis. This problem extends to the U.S. and its coral reef areas, but research on how this controversy influences restoration efforts in Florida is lacking. This study focused on Florida as an important and accessible case study to gain a closer look at the motivations behind coral conservation efforts taking place in real time. Due to a history of national and local coral legislation and consistent threats to Florida’s coral reef tract, coral restoration has emerged as a legitimate form of coral-care that some reef proponents …

Tracking Migratory Birds: Applying A Passive Tracking Technique Using Direction Of Arrival From Vhf Radio Tags, Jesse Moore Jan 2020

Tracking Migratory Birds: Applying A Passive Tracking Technique Using Direction Of Arrival From Vhf Radio Tags, Jesse Moore

Open Access Master's Theses

As the offshore wind power industry grows along the U.S Atlantic Coast, biologists need to assess potential conflicts between birds and wind turbines. There is a pressing need to develop accurate tracking systems that can evaluate movements of volant (flying) organisms near offshore wind facilities during both the pre-construction and post-construction phase in U.S. waters. Based on research in Europe, turbines at offshore wind facilities can present a collision risk to birds, as well as a migration barrier. Available tracking technology has difficulties tracking fine-scale temporal and spatial movements of small (<200 >g) volant organisms. The functionality of a direction …

The Impacts Of Hearing Loss On Social-Emotional Health, Lili Lan Lebrun Visgilio

Open Access Master's Theses

According to the World Health Organization, over 900 million people are expected to have disabling hearing loss by 2050. Most studies about hearing loss published thus far have focused on the impacts hearing loss has on adults above the age of 60. However, this study examines the relationship between hearing loss and social-emotional health in adults between the ages of 21 and 50. Literature describing the impact of hearing loss on the social-emotional health of young and middle aged adults is sparse. This study uses data from the 2011 wave of the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) obtained via the …

Approximate Inversion Of Mimo Systems For Precision Tracking, Roland G. Schurig Jan 2020

Approximate Inversion Of Mimo Systems For Precision Tracking, Roland G. Schurig

Open Access Master's Theses

The problem considered is the design of a digital control system for precision tracking control of a fully-coupled non-minimum phase MIMO plant. The first step is to design a 2-degree-of-freedom feedback tracking system using standard pole-placement or linear quadratic regulator techniques. The result is a stable closed-loop system having zero steady-state error to step inputs. In order to obtain precision tracking for other types of inputs, some kind of feedforward control is needed. Two different tracking architectures are considered in this thesis, both feature a feedforward inverse filter to enable precision tracking. The filters are the inverse of a closed-loop …

Remote Sensing Applications For Abating Aircraft–Bird Strike Risks In Southeast Brazil, Natalia S. Novoselova, Alexey A. Novoselov, Arthur Macarrão, Guilherme Gallo-Ortiz, Wesley Rodrigues Silva

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The rising number of aircraft collisions with birds requires the development of appropriate mitigation measures to control their populations in the vicinity of airports. The black vulture (Coragyps atratus; vultures) is considered one of the most dangerous species for aviation in Brazil. To better understand the spatial distribution patterns of flying vultures and the risks they may pose to aviation, we studied natural and anthropogenic superficial factors and then numerically estimated and mapped the risk of collision with birds over the Airport Safety Area (ASA) for the Amarais Airport and Presidente Prudente Airport in the southeast part of …

Non-Native Microstegium Vimineum Populations Collapse With Fungal Leaf Spot Disease Outbreak, Robert Warren Jan 2020

Non-Native Microstegium Vimineum Populations Collapse With Fungal Leaf Spot Disease Outbreak, Robert Warren

Biology Faculty Datasets

Abstract

Non-native plants may meet little resistance in the novel range if they leave their biological enemies at home. As a result, species invasion can be rapid and appear unlimited. However, with time, organisms may acquire novel enemies in the novel range, or home-range enemies also may colonize the novel range. For plants, several authors have suggested that enemy release may give way to enemy acquisition in which pathogens accumulate and suppresses non-native plants. The ‘naturalization’ that occurs with acquired enemies may take decades to develop, yet most species invasion research lasts less than 4 years, and data tracking plant …

The Biology Of The Influenza D Virus, Jieshi Yu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Influenza D virus (IDV) was first identified in 2011 from clinically ill pigs in America. In nearly a decade since its discovery, the virus has been detected in multiple animal species in a vast region of the globe and is considered an important cause of concern to animal and human health. IDV utilizes cattle as the primary reservoir. The viral infection can cause mild respiratory disease in cattle and has been indicated as a causative agent of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) complex that is the most common and costly disease affecting the cattle industry. Moreover, outbreaks of IDV in swine …

Global Gene Expression And Dna Methylation Of The Hypothalamus In Feeder Calves Fed A High Concentrate Diet Upon Entering Feedlot Phase, Jason E. Griffin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Feedlot finishing diets contain high energy to allow for rapid growth and fat deposition. Previous studies have shown the use of high concentrate diets changed DNA methylation and expression of genes in the hypothalamus involved with regulating feed intake, metabolism, signaling, and neuronal communication. This study investigates whether feeding a high concentrate diet to calf-feds enter the feedlot could alter DNA methylation in the hypothalamus affecting expression of growth and development genes. Angus-influenced steers (n=12) were randomly allocated to 2 treatment groups: 1) High Energy/High Concentrate (HE/HC, 1.33Mcal/kg net energy gain NEg) for 202 days; or 2) traditional Backgrounding/Finishing (B/F), …

In Planta Evaluation Of Gene Regulation By Soybean Auxin Response Factors, Pratiksha K C Jan 2020

In Planta Evaluation Of Gene Regulation By Soybean Auxin Response Factors, Pratiksha K C

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen (N) is an important plant nutrient but its abundance in the soil is not sufficient for profitable crop production. N input in the form of chemical fertilizers helps fill this need; however, an alternative for fertilizers is an immediate need due to the environmental pollution resulting from excessive use of fertilizers. Leguminous plants such as soybean (Glycine max) that form root nodules through symbiotic association with N-fixing rhizobia and therefore need little or no chemical N fertilizers. The plant hormone auxin plays a crucial role in determining the number of nodules and their rate of maturity in soybean. Auxin …

Investigation Of Influenza B Virus Replication Potential In Swine Primary Respiratory Epithelial Cells And Phylodynamic Analysis Of Equine Influenza A H3n8 Viruses, Sunayana Shyam Jandhyala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Influenza viruses are respiratory pathogens that cause significant mortality worldwide. The subtype of influenza A virus currently affecting worldwide equine populations is H3N8, leading to epidemics and transboundary pandemics. The individual gene segments of an isolate named A/equine/Montana/9564-1/2015 were phylogenetically characterized. BLASTn search revealed that the polymerase basic protein 1 (PB1), polymerase acidic (PA), hemagglutinin (HA), nucleoprotein (NP), and matrix (M) segments of this H3N8 isolate shared the highest percentage identity to A/equine/Tennessee/29A/2014 (H3N8) and the polymerase basic protein 2 (PB2), neuraminidase (NA), and non-structural protein (NS) segments to A/equine/Malaysia/M201/2015 (H3N8). Maximum likelihood phylogenetic trees constructed using H3N8 viral genomes …

Identification And Genomic Characterization Of Candidate Starch And Lactate Utilizing Bacteria From The Rumen Of Beef Cattle, Venkata Bandarupalli Jan 2020

Identification And Genomic Characterization Of Candidate Starch And Lactate Utilizing Bacteria From The Rumen Of Beef Cattle, Venkata Bandarupalli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The rumen functions as an anaerobic fermentation chamber where microbial communities ferment feedstuffs into SCFAs. These SCFAs are critical to the ruminant host since they fulfill 70% of its energy requirements. In intensive management systems, ruminants are fed with grain-rich diets, which contain high levels of starch that help meet the energy demands of high producing animals. When grain-based diets are fed to ruminants, ruminal amylolytic and lactate metabolizing bacteria predominate. Grain overload can cause rapid production and accumulation of lactate, resulting in proliferation of amylolytic bacteria and death of lactate metabolizing bacteria. Consequently, high lactate levels result in a …

Perceptions Of Academic Librarians Toward Lgbtq Information Needs: An Exploratory Study, John Siegel, Martin Morris, Gregg A. Stevens

Faculty and Staff Publications

While previous studies have examined lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) information needs, none have addressed librarian confidence in addressing LGBTQ-themed information needs or the factors affecting this confidence. The authors used a mixed-methods survey to assess the knowledge and perspectives of academic librarians in responding to information inquiries related to sexual orientation and gender identity. Based on an exploratory factor analysis, three variables were identified: duty of care/vulnerability of inquirer, public visibility of work conducted, and personal biases and prejudices. These factors can reduce or otherwise influence the ability to meet LGBTQ information needs.

English Learning And Learning Disabilities: Has Research Made Its Way Into Practice?, Solange A. Lopes-Murphy, Christopher G. Murphy

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Fundamental to the hypothesis-driven approach to assessing the special-education (SPED) needs of English learners (ELs) is the awareness that behaviors often exhibited by ELs may mirror indicators of learning disabilities (e.g., difficulty comprehending text, difficulty following directions, lack of appropriate classroom behavior, lack of attention). We surveyed 330 school professionals to examine their perceptions about four mirrored behaviors displayed by ELs during instruction, as indicators of either a second-language difficulty or a learning disability. Only 31% of the respondents correctly indicated that none of the behaviors can distinguish these two possibilities. The probability of correct assessment was positively associated with …
