Influence Of Pfas On The Thermodynamic Membrane Properties And Growth Of A. Borkumensis, Aleksandra Naumann
Influence Of Pfas On The Thermodynamic Membrane Properties And Growth Of A. Borkumensis, Aleksandra Naumann
Open Access Master's Theses
Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of emerging contaminants which are persistent in nature and hazardous for living organisms. They have an anthropogenic origin and have unique properties which have the disadvantage of bioaccumulating in organisms.
This work aims at the investigation of the influence of different relevant PFAS on the membrane properties of A. borkumensis. This information is one important piece on the way to evaluate the overall response of the bacterium in the presence of these molecules. First, the lipids were extracted with a solvent-based method. Afterwards, they were spread at an air-water interface within …
Chemical Investigations Of Pectic Oligosaccharides From Vaccinium Macrocarpon, Zhiyuan Peng
Chemical Investigations Of Pectic Oligosaccharides From Vaccinium Macrocarpon, Zhiyuan Peng
Open Access Master's Theses
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are a serious problem worldwide, especially for females. Previous research in our laboratory suggests that cranberry pectic oligosaccharides (cPOS) can reverse dormant phenotypes in UPEC and therefore could prove useful in the prevention of recurrent UTIs. This thesis focused on the purification and structure determination of purified pectic oligosaccharides from cranberry hull extract. The research helped established the structures of cPOS, provided high purity materials for biological testing, and enabled further studies on the effect of different degrees of polymerization (DP) in preventing dormant phenotypes in UPEC. More specifically, cPOS …

How Landscape Change Affects Commercial And Recreational Fishermen’S Perceptions And Place Meanings, Talya Syvann Ten Brink
Open Access Dissertations
It is critical to plan for environmental change in order to mitigate its adverse effects on human wellbeing. This series of manuscripts examines the impacts of landscape change on commercial and recreational fishermen. Each manuscript provides a unique perspective on place meaning and place change. Using a mixed methods approach, data were collected and analyzed on fishermen’s perceptions of familiar places and on the changes that these places undergo. The first manuscript investigates the impact of offshore wind farms on commercial and recreational fishermen, using the first offshore wind farm in North America – the Block Island Wind Farm (Rhode …
Shock Response Of Soft Materials For Structural Applications, Koray Senol
Shock Response Of Soft Materials For Structural Applications, Koray Senol
Open Access Dissertations
Soft materials have been used extensively as energy absorbers in different industries such as marine, protective equipment, automotive, aerospace and transportation due to their light weight, low impedance, low mechanical stiffness and low strength. Foams, rubbers, polymers, hydrogels, and biological tissues are some examples of soft materials. Low density closed cell foams are widely used in marine and transportation industry as energy absorbers due to their light weight and low impedance. Mechanical responses of these materials are very sensitive to loading medium, rate and direction. Fundamental investigation into the mechanical response of these materials is paramount before they can be …
Tailoring Digital Health To Improve The Nutrition And Health Of People With Parkinson’S Disease, Dara Lyn Lobuono
Tailoring Digital Health To Improve The Nutrition And Health Of People With Parkinson’S Disease, Dara Lyn Lobuono
Open Access Dissertations
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an incurable, neurodegenerative movement disorder, impacting nearly one million Americans. By 2030 the number of people with PD (PwPD) is expected to double and with this growing population, informal caregiver responsibility will also increase. Nutritional status worsens as PD progresses, which impacts cognition, body composition, ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QOL), and increases caregiver burden. Nutritional screening and intervention for PwPD can improve health outcomes, but are often excluded from PD treatment plans.
Given the negative impact of PD on mobility and increased caregiver burden, digital technology could improve …
Influence Of Parent And Community Factors On Infant Snacking, Amy Michelle Moore
Influence Of Parent And Community Factors On Infant Snacking, Amy Michelle Moore
Open Access Dissertations
Snacking has increased among young children in recent decades, yet little is known about snacking during infancy. Therefore, three studies were conducted to explore the influence of parent and community factors on infant snacking. Across the three studies, findings suggest that infants are snacking on less healthy foods, mothers may offer snacks to prevent hunger and manage infant behavior, and less healthy snacks are widely available in the retail food stores. The first study was a secondary analysis of data from the Nurture study that examined the prevalence of less healthy snack intake at three time points (4-6, 7-9, and …
“Rape Is A Four-Letter Word”: Psychosis, Sexual Assault, And Abortion In The 2012 Election, Sarah Stone Watt
“Rape Is A Four-Letter Word”: Psychosis, Sexual Assault, And Abortion In The 2012 Election, Sarah Stone Watt
All Faculty Open Access Publications
Republican candidates made headlines during the 2012 election for their offensive statements regarding rape when defending a comprehensive ban on abortion. Using Lacan’s theory of psychosis, this article exposes unconscious rhetorical structures that may have contributed to the repetition of those gaffes even after the Party advised all comments, during and after candidates’ attempts to retract their inaccurate statements, was the result of a foreclosure in the minds of some candidates. The discursive structure of their comments provides evidence that some candidates were unable to reconcile white patriarchal subjectivity with the inability to protect against rape.
Separating Rope Strands: An Unraveling Of Shame In Gay Men, Chad Allen Lazzari
Separating Rope Strands: An Unraveling Of Shame In Gay Men, Chad Allen Lazzari
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
This theoretical dissertation uses self psychology, Lacanian theory, and neuropsychoanalysis to explore shame in gay men and formulate an integrative understanding for how this master affect effects self and psyche for same-sex attracted men. Brief introductions to the theories used are provided with links to existing scholarship that informs theoretical leanings. A scholarly case is made for the significance of understanding the origin and lifecycle of shame, as well the importance of differentiating between early relational trauma shame (understood as an “inside out” experience), and a later, socially informed “outside in” experience. An argument is made for how shame “attaches” …

The cell cycle regulator p27Kip1 is a critical factor controlling cell number in many lineages. While its anti-proliferative effects are well-established, the extent to which this is a result of its function as a cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor or through other known molecular interactions is not clear. To genetically dissect its role in the developing corneal endothelium, we examined mice harboring two loss-of-function alleles, a null …

Various methods exist for measuring and analyzing dental wear patterns in mam-mals, and these patterns have been extensively studied in ungulates. Mesowear has proven useful as a method to compare large numbers of individuals, particularly fossil individuals, observe trends through time or between groups, and estimate paleoenvi-ronmental conditions. Levels of attrition (tooth-on-tooth wear) and abrasion (tooth-on-food wear) can be readily compared by observing the shape of the cusp and relative crown height of the tooth. This study uses a modified method of mesowear analysis, examining actual cusp angles of the population of Tapirus polkensis from the Gray Fossil Site, a …

Human SARS-CoV-2 infection is characterized by a high mortality rate due to some patients developing a large innate immune response associated with a cytokine storm and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This is characterized at the molecular level by decreased energy metabolism, altered redox state, oxidative damage, and cell death. Therapies that increase levels of (R)-beta-hydroxybutyrate (R-BHB), such as the ketogenic diet or consuming exogenous ketones, should restore altered energy metabolism and redox state. R-BHB activates anti-inflammatory GPR109A signaling and inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome and histone deacetylases, while a ketogenic diet has been shown to protect mice from influenza virus …

We consider a population dynamics model in investigating data from controlled experiments with aphids in broccoli patches surrounded by different margin types (bare or weedy ground) and three levels of insecticide spray (no, light, or heavy spray). The experimental data is clearly aggregate in nature. In previous efforts [1], the aggregate nature of the data was ignored. In this paper, we embrace this aspect of the experiment and correctly model the data as aggregate data, comparing the results to the previous approach. We discuss cases in which the approach may provide similar results as well as cases in which there …

Introducing An Optimization- And Explicit Runge-Kutta- Based Approach To Perform Dynamic Flux Balance Analysis, Wheaton L. Schroeder, Rajib Saha
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
in this work we introduce the generalized optimization- and explicit Runge-Kutta-based Approach (oRKA) to perform dynamic flux Balance Analysis (dfBA), which is numerically more accurate and computationally tractable than existing approaches. oRKA is applied to a four-tissue (leaf, root, seed, and stem) model of Arabidopsis thaliana, p-ath773, uniquely capturing the core-metabolism of several stages of growth from seedling to senescence at hourly intervals. Model p-ath773 has been designed to show broad agreement with published plant-scale properties such as mass, maintenance, and senescence, yet leaving reaction-level behavior unconstrainted. Hence, it serves as a framework to study the reaction-level behavior necessary for …
