The production of microalgae as a fatty acid oil resource for use in biofuels production is a widespread research topic at the lab scale. Microalgae contain a higher lipid content on a dry-weight basis compared to oilseeds such as soybeans. Additionally, the growth and cultivation cycle of microalgae is 15 days, in comparison to soybeans, for which the cycle occurs once or twice annually. However, to date, it has been uneconomical to produce microalgae oils in a world-scale facility due to limitations in cultivating microalgae at commercial scales. Recent developments suggest that the use of heterotrophic microalgae may be economically …

The Innate Immune Response To House Dust Mite In Allergic Airway Inflammation, Madelyn Miller
The Innate Immune Response To House Dust Mite In Allergic Airway Inflammation, Madelyn Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
House dust mite (HDM) is an indoor aeroallergen which is commonly associated with the development of allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma. In fact, up to 70% of allergic asthmatic individuals have been shown to demonstrate reactivity towards HDM allergens. The downstream adaptive immune response to HDM is well characterize and is described as being largely T helper cell type 2 (Th2) and partly T helper cell type 17 (Th17) dominated. However, less is known about how resident antigen presenting cells (APCs) and structural cells such as airway epithelial cells recognize and respond to HDM. Unlike other microbial antigens, recognition of …
The Good Ol' Days: How Sociopolitical Climate Influences Motivations To Seek Historical Nostalgic Media Experiences Versus Non-Nostalgic Media Experiences And The Outcomes Of Those Experiences, Samantha Rosenthal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Nostalgia is a complex cognitive and affective experience and has been described by some as a "social emotion" (Goulding, 2002; Merchant & Rose, 2013; Wildschut et al., 2006). Through nostalgic media experiences, people can develop connections to prior eras or periods in society which are accompanied by a range of emotions and feelings. Perceptions of the past are influenced by experiences in the present. Because of this, it is possible that people's perceptions of their current political climates and society play a role in how they seek and react to media experiences, including nostalgic media experiences. Considering how the political …

It's A Small World After All: Exploring Mobile Dating Application Use And Sexual Partner Networks Among Black Men Who Have Sex With Men (Bmsm), Donovan Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Research supports risky sexual behaviors are especially pervasive traits in high risk groups such as gay and bisexual men; and despite representing a mere 12% of the total LGBTQ population, Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) are at highest risk for transmitting and contracting HIV and other non-HIV sexually transmitted diseases. Even knowing this, the disparity of research coverage of BMSM compared to White MSM is staggering. Recent research has indicated MSM are at even greater risk than before since the advent of mobile dating apps. Online partnering via mobile apps has been linked to overlapping sexual partner …
Identification Of Novel Antimalarials From Natural Product Inspired Libraries, David Perry
Identification Of Novel Antimalarials From Natural Product Inspired Libraries, David Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
To identify novel antimalarials from unexplored areas of chemical space, we have utilized two approaches: (a) using Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies (TPIMS) proprietary high-density combinatorial libraries containing a large number of small molecule compounds residing largely in the underexplored areas of chemical space; and, (b) using novel, complexity-to-diversity/ring distortion of available natural products. The first approach involved the screening of more than 30 million compounds derived from 81 small molecule libraries, built on 81 distinct scaffolds. From this, we identified the pyrrolidine bis-cyclic guanidine library (TPI-1955) to be one of the most active and selective for antiplasmodial activity. …

Emulsion Characterization Study For Improved Bilgewater Treatment And Management, Daniela Diaz Hernandez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The need for proper management of bilgewater to meet discharge regulations (e.g., 15 ppm oil) has revealed the necessity to expand the current understanding of bilgewater emulsions. This study proposed to evaluate emulsion stability under various environmental conditions and to identify governing parameters for emulsion formation. The stabilizing properties of eight-commercial cleaners and two-neat surfactants were evaluated. In situ characterization techniques were used for monitoring emulsion stability. Additionally, a needle-type pH microsensor and fluorescence spectroscopy were used for analyzing mass transfer at the oil-water interface. Water quality of extracted bilgewater showed to highly vary between vessels (e.g., conductivity: 1.74 -- …
Nanostructured Titanium Dioxide As Novel Electrodes For Water/Wastewater Treatment, Amir Ahmadi
Nanostructured Titanium Dioxide As Novel Electrodes For Water/Wastewater Treatment, Amir Ahmadi
Dissertations
Electrochemical redox processes have emerged as a viable option for water and wastewater treatment as they offer several advantages such as capable of degrading a wide range of contaminants, small footprint, capability to adjust to influent fluctuation, and less waste generation. In electrochemical treatment applications, the electrode material largely determines the efficiency of the treatment processes. However, electrodes commonly used for water treatment may either suffer low reactivity and/or stability (e.g. metal and mixed metal oxides such as SnO2, PbO2, IrO2, RuO2, and IrO2/RuO2 electrodes) or be subject to limited applications due to high cost and the scarcity of the …
Efficient Predictive Lossless Hyperspectral Image Compression Using Machine Learning, Zhuocheng Jiang
Efficient Predictive Lossless Hyperspectral Image Compression Using Machine Learning, Zhuocheng Jiang
Dissertations
Hyperspectral imaging technology has found many useful applications in various domains such as remote sensing. Data compression allows for efficient storage and transmission of massive hyperspectral image datasets. In this dissertation, we study efficient predictive coding schemes for lossless compression of hyperspectral images. We use machine learning techniques to improve the following two key components of the predictive coding process: (i) accurate pixel value prediction, and (ii) more efficient entropy coding of the prediction errors (residues). To this end, we propose an adaptive filtering framework based on concatenated neural networks, which are capable of extracting both spatial and spectral correlations …
Copper/N-Acetylcysteine Coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesis, Characterization, And Antimicrobial Activities, Danya Belnour
Copper/N-Acetylcysteine Coated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Synthesis, Characterization, And Antimicrobial Activities, Danya Belnour
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In recent years, there is a growing interest in developing metal based antimicrobial nanomaterials suitable for agricultural and biomedical applications. For centuries, Copper (Cu) biocide has been used for protecting a wide variety of crops from devastating bacterial and fungal diseases. However, prolonged and aggressive use of Cu led to the development of resistance and accumulation in soil. The latter has been linked to aquatic toxicity due to soil Cu leaching. Furthermore, copper build up in soil causes phytotoxicity and reduces uptake of micronutrient Zn through the root system. In biomedical field, Cu has been historically used as an antimicrobial …
Collaborative Governance And Stakeholder Participation In The Colorado River Basin: An Examination Of Patterns Of Inclusion And Exclusion, Surabhi Karambelkar, Andrea K. Gerlak
Collaborative Governance And Stakeholder Participation In The Colorado River Basin: An Examination Of Patterns Of Inclusion And Exclusion, Surabhi Karambelkar, Andrea K. Gerlak
Natural Resources Journal
The Colorado River Basin has a long history of conflict among water users that covet its limited supply. However, with an unprecedented drought and dwindling water supplies in key reservoirs, conflict has given way to collaboration as the strategy of choice in addressing water issues. In keeping with the decentralized management system in the Basin, numerous collaborative venues have been created to address emerging water issues; yet, there is limited information on the pattern of stakeholder participation in these venues. Understanding who is included and excluded from the decision-making process is vital for forging collaborative solutions that are fair, equitable, …
A Road Map To Restoring Rivers: How The Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement Might Influence Future Dam Removal And River Restoration Projects, James C. Ish
Natural Resources Journal
Throughout the United States dams are approaching the terminus of their original licensing periods and are undergoing re-licensing by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This period of review has prompted extensive studies in these basins to determine the cost-benefits associated with keeping these dams, versus removing and restoring the natural ecosystems that are currently inundated. In situations where a dam is deemed to be no longer economically relevant, and/or a detriment to endangered species or their critical habitat, an agreement for removal and restoration is often proposed as the next step in the management of that basin’s water resources. However, …

The Battle Of Armageddon: The Time Of The Final War And The Role Of Spiritualism And Political Powers, Vanderlei Dorneles
The Battle Of Armageddon: The Time Of The Final War And The Role Of Spiritualism And Political Powers, Vanderlei Dorneles
Post Doctoral Fellowship
This book deals with the battle of Armageddon in connection with the fall of Babylon in the literary context of Revelation 16:12-16. Its main focus is about when starts the crucial moment of the last battle between Christ and Satan with the involvement of all the powers on earth. The discussion begins from the assumption that since the 1950s a new understanding has been developed that retakes the Adventist pioneers’ view according which Armageddon is essentially a spiritual or religious battle. The point in discussion is whether Armageddon will start after or before the sixth plague and when the preparations …
Towards A Biblical And Missiological Model Of Cross-Cultural Contextualization Among Chinese Immigrants In "Barrio Chino" Duarte Of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Samuel Telemaque
Dissertations DIS
This study examines the challenge of contextualizing the gospel to Chinese immigrants in the Dominican Republic. Chinese people have been migrating to the Dominican Republic, mainly from Guangdong and Fujian, since the early 1960s. The immigrant population grew to appropriately 50,000 in the 1990s. In spite of this steady growth in population, Adventist leaders have not been able to influence Chinese immigrants to appreciate the gospel and to make decisions to begin a journey toward Christ. This study examines this missiological challenge.
The purpose of this study is to develop a model of contextualization for presenting the gospel to Chinese …

Acetaminophen Does Not Alter The Early Processing Of Emotional Facial Expressions: An Eye-Tracking Study, Andrew C. Gallup, Brianda K. L. Gagnon, Bruna Rosic, Omar T. Eldakar
Biology Faculty Articles
A growing body of research has uncovered that acetaminophen, the most commonly used over-the-counter painkilling drug in the United States, produces a number of unintended psychological effects. In particular, recent studies show that acetaminophen blunts a variety of adaptive affective and cognitive processes, including our sensitivity to painful social experiences and subjective responses to emotional stimuli. Using a double-blind placebo-controlled study, here we examined whether acetaminophen alters the early visual processing of emotional facial expressions. Participants consumed 1000 mg of acetaminophen, or a matched placebo, prior to performing a delayed disengagement task with different facial expressions. Specifically, we used eye-tracking …

Walleye Sander Vitreus Visceral Fat Accumulation, Cole Daleiden, Seth Renner
Journal of Earth and Life Science
For ectothermic species, proper lipid retention is critical to surviving in regions with limited growing seasons. Visceral fat is the dominant form of this energy storage in fish. Build up and depletion of these lipids occur seasonally as activity levels change throughout winter and spring. Due to this annual pattern, the purpose of this study is to determine a trend in the amount of visceral fat Walleye Sander vitreus accumulate in a time of year when metabolic rates are low and transition into the spawning process has yet to occur. Angling was the method of capture conducted during the months …

Methods In The Detection Of Aliphatic Alcohols And Anabolic Steroids In Β‑Cyclodextrin Solutions, Anna Zocchi Haynes
Open Access Master's Theses
The sensitive, selective, and practical detection of aliphatic alcohols is a continuing technical challenge with significant impact in public health work and environmental remediation efforts. Reported in the first manuscript is the use of a β-cyclodextrin derivative to promote proximity-induced interactions between aliphatic alcohol analytes and a brightly colored organic dye, which result in highly analyte-specific color changes that enabled accurate alcohol identification. Linear discriminant analysis of the color changes enabled resulting in 100% differentiation of the colorimetric signals obtained from methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol in combination with BODIPY and Rhodamine dyes. The resulting solution-state detection system has significant broad-based …

Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid (Pfos) As A Potential Risk Factor For Late-Onset Alzheimer’S Disease, Veronia Basaly
Open Access Master's Theses
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that accounts for about 60 to 80% of dementia cases worldwide. AD is characterized by two important physiological features: extracellular senile plaques consisting of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide that is cleaved from a larger protein called the amyloid precursor protein (APP), and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) containing hyperphosphorylated tau protein. The pathogenesis of sporadic or late-onset AD (LOAD) which represents 95% of the cases appears to not be heritable and may be related to epigenetic programming and environmental factors acquired earlier in life. Apolipoprotein allele 4 (ApoE4) protein is encoded by the ApoE …

Environmental And Optical Signatures Of Cochlodinium Polykrikoides In Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Jessica Carney
Open Access Master's Theses
In the summer of 2018, a dinoflagellate bloomed in the open waters of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. The dinoflagellate, Cochlodinium polykrikoides, is a potentially toxic phytoplankton that has appeared in the Bay sporadically over the past few decades. It was first recorded in the Narragansett Bay Time Series in 1979, but its appearance was infrequent. In the summers of 2016 and 2018 C. polykrikoides bloomed in the bay at densities high enough to form rust colored patches on the surface due to the dark pigmentation of the cells, which was distinct enough to be seen from shore, and from …
