Diesel oxidation catalysts deactivate due to Pt sintering, a major problem in automotive industries. To make sure they operate effectively throughout the lifetime of the vehicle, automotive industries are putting an excessive amount of Pt. There is a need to develop a catalyst that serves long term performance with minimal use of Pt. Jones et al.1 demonstrated that ceria traps Pt atoms. His work generated some logical and valid questions such as what is the mechanism for the formation of anomalously large Pt particles? What is the upper limit of Pt metal loading in the form of single atoms …

We analyzed 47 scats of neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis annectens), collected along the Necaxa River in Central Mexico, using the Willis flotation technique with a 48% saturated saline solution. Along with plant material, we found the endoparasites Oxyuris equi, Ascaris sp., and Strongylus equinus, among others. Our results indicate that otters in the Necaxa River have a parasite load that needs further analysis, particularly because 2 of the parasite species are associated with human activity.

Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 was originally thought to be the sole pattern recognition receptor for lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), a Ca2+-permeant channel, has been suggested as a non-TLR receptor membrane-bound sensor of LPS. We recently reported that TRPA1 is expressed in lung epithelial cells (LECs) and mediates lung inflammation induced by cigarette smoke. However, the role of TRPA1 in LPS-induced lung inflammation has not been conclusively defined, and its underlying cellular mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, our in vitro results showed that LPS sequentially produced a cascade of events, including the elevation of …
Copyright And The Brain, Mark Bartholomew
Copyright And The Brain, Mark Bartholomew
Journal Articles
This Article exploresthe intersection of copyright law, aesthetic theory, and neuroscience. The current test for copyright infringement requires a court or jury to assess whether the parties’ works are “substantially similar” from the vantage point of the “ordinary observer. ”Embedded within this test are several assumptions about audiences and art. Brain science calls these assumptions into question. The substantial similarity test posits that aesthetic reactions are unmeasurable and uniform. In actuality, they can be quantified and vary depending on audience and artistic medium. Neuroscience has already reconfigured the law in many areas, from tort damages to the death penalty. Now …

Current antifibrinolytic agents reduce blood loss by inhibiting plasmin active sites (e.g., aprotinin) or by preventing plasminogen/tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) binding to fibrin clots (e.g., ε-aminocaproic acid and tranexamic acid); however, they have adverse side effects. Here, we expressed 60-residue (NH2NAE . . . IEKCOOH) Kunitz domain1 (KD1) mutants of human tissue factor pathway inhibitor type-2 that inhibit plasmin as well as plasminogen activation. A single (KD1-L17R-KCOOH) and a double mutant (KD1-Y11T/L17R- KCOOH) were expressed in Escherichia coli as His-tagged constructs, each with enterokinase cleavage sites. KD1-Y11T/L17R-KCOOH was also expressed in …

Virtually all land plants are coated in a cuticle, a waxy polyester that prevents nonstomatal water loss and is important for heat and drought tolerance. Here, we describe a likely genetic basis for a divergence in cuticular wax chemistry between Sorghum bicolor, a drought tolerant crop widely cultivated in hot climates, and its close relative Zea mays (maize). Combining chemical analyses, heterologous expression, and comparative genomics, we reveal that: 1) sorghum and maize leaf waxes are similar at the juvenile stage but, after the juvenile-to-adult transition, sorghum leaf waxes are rich in triterpenoids that are absent from maize; 2) biosynthesis …

Taxonomy Of Communication Noise Impacting The Quality Of Library Resources, Emmanuel Ifeduba, Benedette Ogoo Unuigboje Mrs
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Frequently media reports draw attention to errors in published books and other publications. Sometimes the reports emanate from libraries and schools that bicker with suppliers of flawed publications. Notwithstanding much of the noise-related research in information science literature focus on noise within and around libraries and schools; and fail to explore the breadth and depth of this phenomenon described as communication noise. This study, therefore, aims to explore the breadth and depth of communication noise by identifying, describing and classifying the various types affecting information quality with a view to finding solutions to them. This is a taxonomical study of …

The peripartum period is accompanied by numerous physiological and behavioural adaptations organised by the maternal brain. These changes are essential for adequate expression of maternal behaviour, thereby ensuring proper development of the offspring. The corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) plays a key role in a variety of behaviours accompanying stress, anxiety, and depression. There is also evidence that CRF contributes to maladaptations during the peripartum period. We investigated the effects of CRF in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) of lactating mice during maternal care and analysed locomotor activity and anxiety-like behaviour in the offspring. The BNST has been implicated …

EnvP(b)1 is an endogenous retroviral envelope gene found in human and other primate genomes. We report EnvP(b)1 sequences in primate genomes consistent with an integration event between 40 and 71 million years ago. Using a highly specific polyclonal antiserum raised against the putative receptor binding domain (RBD) of human EnvP(b)1, we detected expression in human placenta, ovaries, and thymus. We found that EnvP(b)1 is proteolytically processed, and using cell-cell fusion assays in multiple primate cell lines, we demonstrated that extant EnvP(b)1 proteins from a variety of primate genomes are fusogenic. This work supports the idea that EnvP(b)1 is under purifying …

Counseling Clients With Traumatic Brain Injury: Exploring Counselors’ Perceived Knowledge, Comfort, And Self-Awareness, Michelle Bradham-Cousar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The number of traumatic brain injury (TBI) diagnoses continues to rise each year. Counseling is a critical factor in TBI treatment, and although numerous studies have investigated TBI outcomes, a paucity of researchers have studied professional counselors’ knowledge, comfort, and self-awareness when working with TBI clients. Due to the diversity of counselor caseloads, it is likely that counselors will serve clients with a dual diagnosis that includes TBI. These dual diagnoses include depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, psychosis, or another neurocognitive disorder. The purpose of this study was to explore counselors’ knowledge, comfort, and self-awareness when working with individuals with …
Data-Driven Modeling Of The Causes And Effects Of Interneuronal Dysfunction In Alzheimer’S Disease And Dravet Syndrome, Carlos Perez
Data-Driven Modeling Of The Causes And Effects Of Interneuronal Dysfunction In Alzheimer’S Disease And Dravet Syndrome, Carlos Perez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
One of the defining features of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the increased cleavage of the amyloid precursor protein (APP), causing abnormally high levels of the aggregation form of amyloid beta (Aβ ). Many studies have shown that both AD patients and AD mice models exhibit abnormal network activity, including hypersynchronous excitatory neuron behavior, altered brain rhythms, and in some instances epileptic seizures when exposed to high levels of Aβ In particular, strong experimental evidence suggests that it is the small globular amyloid oligomers (gOs) and curvilinear fibrils (CFs) rather than the more stable, late stage rigid fibrils (RFs) that cause …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Boron Toxicity Tolerance In Plants, Guannan Wang
Molecular Mechanisms Of Boron Toxicity Tolerance In Plants, Guannan Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Boron toxicity is a worldwide agricultural problem that limits crop productivity and quality. However, our understanding on the genetic responses and adaption mechanisms to boron toxicity in plants is very limited. To address this gap in our knowledge, I compared boron stress-sensitive model, Arabidopsis thaliana and its stress-adapted relative Schrenkiella parvula to study how plants respond and adapt to excess boron at physiological, genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolic levels.
The overall project goal involved integration of multi-omics datasets to develop genome to phenome interpretations. To achieve this, I developed a python package, GOMCL, to facilitate the extraction of biologically meaningful information …

Deep-Ultraviolet Laser Ablation For Biomolecular Analysis, Oluwaremilekun Omowunmi Lawal
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
New sampling and ionization techniques were developed using a deep-ultraviolet (DUV) laser at 193 nm wavelength for analysis of large biomolecules. A micrometer spatial resolution DUV laser ablation and capture system was constructed to sample tissue biomolecules. The spot size measurements of the focused beam showed that subcellular spots with ca. 2 μm diameter can be readily achieved with this wavelength. To demonstrate the extraction of tissue biomolecules with the DUV laser, regions of tissue sections were ablated and captured for offline proteomic and genomic analysis. The proteomic studies revealed that the tissue proteins were ejected without fragmentation and that …

Structure And Dynamics Of Phospholipid Vesicles And The Dependence On Nanoscale Interactions With Molecules Of Varying Complexity, Lakshapathy Widanelage Judith Upeka De Mel
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, molecular interactions and changes imposed by nano-scale structures on phospholipid vesicles were investigated. 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) were used as the model system. Understanding changes of the bilayer structure, interfacial properties, lipid dynamics, and self-assembly, allows bridging relationships between biological cell membrane structure and dynamics to cellular functionalities. For example, membrane curvature changes are linked to membrane protein functions, although the exact mechanisms of control are not yet understood. Moreover, the knowledge gained from vesicle models allows exploring novel strategies for drug delivery applications. To achieve this, DOPC LUVs were synthesized and characterized by a …
Sexually Dimorphic Oxytocin Receptor-Expressing Neurons In The Anteroventral Periventricular Nucleus Regulates Maternal Behavior, Kaustubh Sharma
Sexually Dimorphic Oxytocin Receptor-Expressing Neurons In The Anteroventral Periventricular Nucleus Regulates Maternal Behavior, Kaustubh Sharma
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The neurohypophysial hormone oxytocin is involved in the regulation of social behaviors, including social recognition, pair bonding, and sex-specific parental behaviors in a variety of species. Oxytocin triggers these social behaviors by binding to oxytocin receptors (OXTR) in various parts of the brain. Oxytocin-induced sex-typical behavior, therefore, suggests a sexual dimorphic distribution of OXTR in the brain. In recent years, the oxytocin system in the brain received tremendous attention as a potential pharmacological target for treatment of many psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, and even sex-specific psychiatric disorder like postpartum depression (PPD). An important problem and a …

Univariate And Multivariate Double Slash Distribution: Properties And Application, M. El-Morshedy, A. H. El- Bassiouny, M. H. Tahir, M. S. Eliwa
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper, we introduce an extension for the slash distribution, called double slash distribution which, is a heavy tailed compared to slash distribution. The univariate and multivariate forms for the proposed model are proposed. Moreover, moments and the invariant property under linear transformations are discussed. A simulation study is performed to investigate asymptotically the bias properties of the estimators. Finally, a real data application is analyzed to obtain the flexibility of the new model.

A Probability Model For The Number Of Female Child Births, Anup Kumar
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
We analysed the phenomenon of ‘son preference’ that is prevalent in the Indian society, through a probability model for the number of female childbirths among females of Indian society. In [1], a probability model for the number of female childbirths was applied to an observed set of data taken from NFHS-III (2005-06) for the seven North-East states of India. Some problem regarding the application of the model to the data set is found and the proper solution is suggested. The modified approach is illustrated to observed data set taken from NFHS-III(2005-06) for few states of India of different regions.

Statistical Analysis Of Fertility Control Measures In Diverse Group Of Females, Brijesh Pratap Singh, Sonam Maheshwari, Puneet Kumar Gupta
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Fertility in India will continue to decline steadily to below-replacement levels towards the end of the century, and then recover early next century. Averages aggregated at the national level however, mask the considerable economic, cultural and spatial heterogeneity at the regional level, which in turn, have a profound influence on the level and pace of fertility decline. Conventional fertility theories highlight the influence of modernization, social and economic development and diffusion of changing ideas and individualistic values on the desired number of children. In this study estimation of fertility pattern is analyzed by two fertility control measure. First measure is …

Abstract: The present paper demonstrates piecewise constant baseline hazard model with shared frailty for analysing the timing of entry into workforce after schooling that are clustered into geographical domain. Observations from the same cluster are usually correlated because, unknowingly, they share certain unobserved characteristics. Including these within cluster correlations in the model allows correctly measuring the covariate effects and avoiding underestimation or overestimation of the parameters of interest. Besides analysing the effect of substantial demographic and socio-economic circumstances on the time to entry into the workforce for geographically clustered event history data, comparison of estimates obtained from the Cox regression …
