The Evaluation Of Functional Feeds Additives In Commercial Conditions With The Pacific White Leg Shrimp, Kurt Servin
The Evaluation Of Functional Feeds Additives In Commercial Conditions With The Pacific White Leg Shrimp, Kurt Servin
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Given the rapid expansion of aquaculture globally and with the Litopenaeus vannamei sector making a significant contribution to seafood production, there is an urgent need to address diet and feed formulation focused on sustainability and novel ingredients, without using chemotherapeutics. This thesis explores three bioactive natural agents used in shrimp diets to mitigate the threat of disease and confer a more resilient shrimp: (i) β-glucans and yeast-derived components as functional feed additives; (ii) a blend of phytobiotic herbal extractives and yeast (YAH); and (iii) Tuna Protein Hydrolysate (TLH) as growth-promoting and immunostimulants. All studies were conducted on juvenile shrimp in …

Application Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles To The Study Of Deep-Sea Benthic Ecology, Nils A Piechaud
Application Of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles To The Study Of Deep-Sea Benthic Ecology, Nils A Piechaud
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Rising anthropogenic pressure in the deep sea prompts concerns for its short and long term conservation, however, it remains mostly unexplored. Effective conservation strategies need to be based on a sound understanding of the target ecosystem, or ecosystems, which is not the case in the deep sea, owing largely to the lack of sufficient data. Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) could help address several long-standing challenges in the study of deep-sea ecology, thanks to their capacity to efficiently sample this remote environment. This thesis aims to investigate how these vehicles can contribute to the study of deep-sea benthic ecology through applying …
Effect Of Environmental Temperature On Aspects Of The Developmental Ecophysiology Of The Semi-Terrestrial Amphipod Orchestia Gammarellus, Ellen Tully
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Ecophysiological responses vary during development in ways that may determine the ecological and evolutionary consequences of climate change. How temperature alters processes vital to organismal homeostasis (e.g. cardiac and gastro-intestinal (GI) behaviour) and survival (e.g. thermal tolerance) at different developmental stages is underdeveloped. Consequently, my thesis investigated key aspects of the thermal biology (specifically cardiac output, the ontogeny of GI behaviour and upper thermal limits) of an ecologically-important, brooded species, the semi-terrestrial amphipod Orchestia gammarellus. Little is known of the earliest embryonic responses, particularly with respect to direct developing brooded species. This is in-part due to a lack of high-throughput …
Ants Increase Cloverworm Herbivory Via Nonconsumptive Pathways, Hannah J. Penn, Kacie J. Athey
Ants Increase Cloverworm Herbivory Via Nonconsumptive Pathways, Hannah J. Penn, Kacie J. Athey
School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Generalist arthropod predators often exhibit a range of intraguild interactions reducing their potential efficacy as biological control agents. These interactions may include consumptive or nonconsumptive effects that mediate the impacts of herbivores. We examined interactions among 2 generalist predators, the striped lynx spider (Oxyopes salticus Hentz; Araneae: Oxyopidae) and an ant (Lasius neoniger Emery; Hymenoptera: Formicidae), and a herbivore, the green cloverworm (Hypena scabra F.; Lepidoptera: Erebidae), all prevalent in central Kentucky soybean agroecosystems. We hypothesized that individual predator treatments would reduce green cloverworm survival and resultant leaf damage, but that predators would interfere with each other when both were …
The Impact Of Confidence-Based Marking On Unit Exam Achievement In A High School Physical Science Course, Casey Clark
The Impact Of Confidence-Based Marking On Unit Exam Achievement In A High School Physical Science Course, Casey Clark
Graduate Research Papers
High school teachers begin each year with a plethora of content standards to teach, however, instructing students how to learn is hardly ever considered. Metacognition and learning how to learn are not present in high school science content standards. The ability to self-regulate our knowledge is essential to assumptions about learning (Cubukcu, 2009). Students are expected to use metacognitive strategies, even if they do not have them. When students work through problems, it is common to expect them to go back and recheck their work. This is a form of metacognition and self-regulation. Asking students apply metacognition can help them …

Chronic infections of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the lungs of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients are problematic in Ireland where inherited CF is prevalent. The bacteria's capacity to form a biofilm in its pathogenesis is highly virulent and leads to decreased susceptibility to most antibiotic treatments. Herein, we present the activity profiles of the Cu(II), Mn(II) and Ag(I) tdda-phen chelate complexes {[Cu(3,6,9-tdda)(phen)2].3H2O.EtOH}n (Cu-tdda-phen), {[Mn(3,6,9-tdda)(phen)2].3H2O.EtOH}n (Mn-tdda-phen) and [Ag2(3,6,9-tdda)(phen)4].EtOH (Ag-tdda-phen) (tddaH2 = 3,6,9-trioxaundecanedioic acid; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) towards clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa derived from Irish CF patients in comparison to two reference laboratory strains (ATCC 27853 and PAO1). The effects of the metal-tdda-phen …

Comparative Modelling Of A Novel Enzyme: Mus Musculus Leucine Decarboxylase, Ari̇f Sercan Şahutoğlu
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Leucine decarboxylase (LDC) is a recently proposed enzyme with no official enzyme commission number yet. It is encoded by the Mus musculus gene Gm853 which is expressed at kidneys, generating isopentylamine, an alkylmonoamine that has not been described to be formed by any metazoan enzyme yet. Although the relevance of LDC in mammalian physiology has not been fully determined, isopentylamine is a potential modulator which may have effects on insulin secretion and healthy gut microbiota formation. The LDC is a stable enzyme that specifically decarboxylates L-leucine but does not decarboxylate ornithine or lysine as its paralogues ornithine decarboxylase (ODC; EC: …

Effective Synthesis Of Bicyclodienes Via Palladium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Allylic Alkylationand Ruthenium-Catalyzed Cycloisomerization, Ni̇zam Havare
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
[n.3.0]Bicycles (n = 3-6) can be synthesized using palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation followed by rutheniumcatalyzed cycloisomerization. New types of triarylphosphino-1,2-diaminooxazoline ligands show the same high levels of enantioselectivity observed with Trost ligand when employed in Pd-catalyzed allylic alkylation reactions. The enyne products of these allylic alkylation reactions were further elaborated using a Ru-catalyzed redox isomerization process, for which a mechanism is proposed.

EndoBI-1 and EndoBI-2 are two endo-β-N-acetylglucosaminidase isoenzymes that cleave N-N'-diacetylchitobiosyl moieties found in various types of native N-glycans. These N-glycans are indigestible by human infants and adults due to the lack of responsible glycosyl hydrolases and they act as selective prebiotics for a probiotic microorganism, Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis, in the large intestine. The selectivity and the thermostability of EndoBI-1 and EndoBI-2 suggest that these enzymes may be useful for many scientific and industrial applications. In this study, the growing numbers of homologous sequences in different databases were exploited in a comparative approach to investigate structural properties of EndoBI-1 and …

Articles
This article examines the evolution of peer review and the modern editorial processes of scholarly journals by analyzing a novel data set derived from the Royal Society’s archives and covering 1865-1965, that is, the historical period in which refereeing (not yet known as peer review) became firmly established. Our analysis reveals how the Royal Society’s editorial processes coped with both an increasing reliance on refereeing and a growth in submissions, while maintaining collective responsibility and minimizing research waste. By engaging more of its fellows in editorial activity, the society was able to establish an equilibrium of number of submissions per …

Data driven methods are increasingly being adopted in the medical domain for clinical predictive modeling. Prediction of stroke outcome using machine learning could provide a decision support system for physicians to assist them in patient-oriented diagnosis and treatment. While patient-specific clinical parameters play an important role in outcome prediction, a multimodal fusion approach that integrates neuroimaging with clinical data has the potential to improve accuracy. This paper addresses two research questions: (a) does multimodal fusion aid in the prediction of stroke outcome, and (b) what fusion strategy is more suitable for the task at hand. The baselines for our experimental …

COVID-19 has been the most devastating pandemic in human history. Despite the highest scientific efforts and investments, a reliable and certified medication has yet to be developed regarding to immune or cure this virus. However, while synthetic medications are gaining the focus of attentions, it appears from a significant number of recent studies that plant-based substances could also be potential candidates for developing effective and secure remedies against this novel disease. Citing such recent works, this review primarily demonstrates the antiviral potentials of medicinal plants for inhibiting human coronaviruses. It also shows the importance of antiviral plants substances, particularly in …

As microorganisms continue to develop resistance and survive against many different forms of antimicrobial solutions, such as antibiotics, there is urgent need for new classes of antimicrobial peptides to mitigate the threat. Bacteria are a rich source of ribosomally-synthesized antimicrobial peptides known as bacteriocins, which are produced by one bacterial species to kill other bacterial strains. Lanthionine-containing lantibiotics and sactibiotics are post-translationally modified bacteriocins which display extremely potent antibacterial activity.
Thuricin CD, a two-peptide system belonging to the sactibiotic family, shows high activity, but most importantly excellent selectivity, against C. difficile infection. The Thuricin CD peptides contain a number of …

Although phosphorus supplementation (SP) has been shown to improve salinity tolerance in plants, crosstalk between hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or L-cysteine desulfhydrase (LDES) and SP-induced salinity tolerance needs to be elucidated. Thus, prior to initiation of stress treatment, young seedlings were transferred to aqueous solution containing the scavenger of H2S, 0.1 mM hypotaurine (HT), or the inhibitor of LDES, 0.3 mM DL-propargylglycine (PAG), for 12 h. The plants grown under control (no NaCl added) or salinity stress (SS; 100 mM NaCl) were then supplemented with SP (2.0 mM in total) as KH2PO4 for 5 weeks. SS caused a significant decrease in …

One of the major effects of salt stress is high production of reactive oxygen species that adversely affect essential cellular metabolic pathways. To limit the elevated production of reactive oxygen species, plants stimulate various types of antioxidants. In this study, sulfur was used to induce tolerance against oxidative stress through modulation of the activities of various antioxidants. Two maize genotypes (Agatti 2003 and Pak Afgoi 2003) were subjected to different salinity (25 and 75 mM) and sulfur (40 and 80 mM) treatments and a control treatment. Various antioxidants and oxidative stress determinants in maize organs (leaf, shoot, and root) were …
