Fungal Community Characterization And Machine Learning Classification Of Building Mold Status Between Pre- And Post-Remediation, Truc T. Ly
Public Health Theses
As part of a larger sampling campaign with mold inspectors across the US, samples (dust and direct mold) from 11 New York homes during pre- and post-remediation were analyzed by sequencing the interspaced transcribed region of extracted DNA and bioinformatic methods. Overarching findings from this study include: 1) pre/post- remediation fungal communities exhibit subtle differences and 2) larger degrees of fungal community differences exist between direct mold and settled dust. Mainly known as environmentally derived fungal species, Cladosporium ramotenellum and Rhodosporidium diobovatum were the two main taxa to be abundant among post-remediation samples. The thermophilic fungi, Thielavia terrestris, was higher …
Patterns Of Care And Outcomes Of Patients With Myelofibrosis: A Population-Based Study, Shelby Heath Meckstroth
Patterns Of Care And Outcomes Of Patients With Myelofibrosis: A Population-Based Study, Shelby Heath Meckstroth
Public Health Theses
Background: Current treatments for Myelofibrosis (MF) are largely palliative, with ruxolitinib being the breakthrough treatment approved for higher-risk patients by the Food and Drug Administration in November of 2011. Little is known about the “real-world” patterns of care and outcomes of MF patients since the introduction of ruxolitinib. Patients and Methods: The SEER-Medicare database was used to identify older patients diagnosed with MF from 2007 through 2015. Treatment patterns were assessed using Medicare part B and D claims, and multivariate cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the effect of ruxolitinib use on survival in MF patients. Results: …

The Devonian-Carboniferous boundary in the type area of the Mississippian subsystem (tri-state area of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri) has been historically difficult to identify. Many of the localities contain similar lithologies and stratigraphic successions, but chronostratigraphic correlation of seemingly identical lithologies can vary greatly in this interval and frequently this has led to miscorrelation. In particular, the similar lithofacies that comprise the McCraney Formation and Louisiana Formation have been a source of stratigraphic confusion for over 100 years. To investigate the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary interval in the Mississippian type area we selected two localities in southeastern Iowa, the H-28 core from …

Eukaryotic parasites are significant contributors to childhood illness in Niger. While helminthiases have received national attention through mass deworming efforts, the epidemiology of intestinal protozoa in Niger remains underexamined. This study employed real-time PCR diagnostics to describe the prevalence of two schistosomes, four soil-transmitted helminths, and one protozoan parasite in Boboye Department, Dosso Region. Prevalence was assessed using bulk stool specimens collected from a population-based sample of 86 children residing in 9 communities. Anthropometric measurements were used to calculate child growth z-scores and stool consistency was graded. Helminths were absent from the study population, with the exception of a single …
Misconceptions About Conception And Other Fallacies: Historical Bias In Reproductive Biology, Virginia Hayssen
Misconceptions About Conception And Other Fallacies: Historical Bias In Reproductive Biology, Virginia Hayssen
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Natural selection (differential reproduction) is a major tenet of evolutionary theory. In mammals the success of reproduction is primarily controlled by females who provide the majority of offspring care via gestation and lactation. In some species, maternal care also extends post-weaning. This primacy of female reproduction in evolution has not quite crept into our understanding of organismal adaptations in anatomy, physiology, and behavior. This cultural legacy has left its mark and led to misconceptions in our understanding of reproductive biology that are especially prominent in the understanding of reproduction in the general public. Here, I give examples of such misconceptions. …

The Wisdom Of A Crowd Of Near-Best Fits: Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis In The United States, Ellie Mainou, Gwen Spencer, Dylan Shepardson, Robert Dorit
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Antibiotic-resistant tuberculosis (TB) strains pose a major challenge to TB eradication. Existing US epidemiological models have not fully incorporated the impact of antibiotic-resistance. To develop a more realistic model of US TB dynamics, we formulated a compartmental model integrating single-and multi-drug resistance. We fit twenty-seven parameters to twenty-two years of historical data using a genetic algorithm to minimize a non-differentiable error function. Since counts for several compartments are not available, many parameter combinations achieve very low error. We demonstrate that a crowd of near-best fits can provide compelling new evidence about the ranges of key parameters. While available data is …

Variation in light and temperature can influence the genetic diversity and structure of marine plankton communities. While open-ocean plankton communities receive much scientific attention, little is known about how environmental variation affects plankton communities on tropical coral reefs. Here, we characterize eukaryotic plankton communities on coral reefs across the Bocas del Toro Archipelago, Panama´. Temperature loggers were deployed, and midday light levels were measured to quantify environmental differences across reefs at four inshore and four offshore sites (Inshore = Punta Donato, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) Point, Cristobal, Punta Laurel and Offshore = Drago Mar, Bastimentos North, Bastimentos South, and …

Substance Use Disorder Policy For Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists: A Policy Analysis, Justin D. Mcadoo
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Substance use disorders (SUDs) negatively impact society and communities while causing substantial harm to families and friends. The leading occupational hazard for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) is SUDs. It is estimated that 15% of actively practicing CRNAs in the United States will have a SUD during their career. In order to address SUDs related to CRNAs in the workplace, anesthesia groups and healthcare facilities must develop, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures based on the translation of evidence-based research into the practice of anesthesia. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project analyzed LifeLinc Anesthesia’s SUD policy for CRNAs, compared …
