Turkish Journal of Botany

The mangrove plant Kandelia candel is a type of woody halophyte that grows in tropical and subtropical ocean intertidal zones and exhibits a high salt tolerance. In this study, 61,970 unigenes were obtained from the roots of 60-day-old K. candel seedlings treated with 0 (control), 200, 400, and 600 mM NaCl for 3 days with an N50 of 1510 bp. Moreover, 454, 311, and 2663 genes were differentially expressed under 200, 400, and 600 mM NaCl treatments, respectively. These differentially expressed genes were primarily involved in plant hormone signal transduction, carbohydrate and energy metabolism, amino acid metabolism, stress response, and …

Effects Of Microalgal Biomass As Biofertilizer On The Growth Of Cucumber And Microbial Communities In The Cucumber Rhizosphere, Junping Lv, Shufang Liu, Jia Feng, Qi Liu, Jun Guo, Lige Wang, Xiaoyan Jiao, Shulian Xie

Turkish Journal of Botany

In the present study, microalgal biomass (Anabeana circinalis and Scenedesmus quadricauda) was used as biofertilizer in cucumber cultivation. The response of cucumber growth characters to microalgal biofertilizer was evaluated. Moreover, rhizosphere microbial diversity and community composition of cucumber was analyzed through 16S rRNA high-throughput Illumina sequencing data. The results showed that microalgal biomass as biofertilizer significantly promoted height, number of leaves and flower buds, and stem diameter of cucumber. The application of a high concentration of S. quadricauda to soil raised the diversity of rhizosphere fungi of cucumber. The rhizosphere microbial community of cucumber also responded to microalgal biofertilizer. The …

Magnetite Nanoparticles-Based Hydroxyl Radical Scavenging Activity Assay Ofantioxidants Using N, N-Dimethyl-P-Phenylenediamine Probe, Zi̇ya Can, Büşra Keski̇n, Ayşem Arda, Erol Erçağ, Mustafa Reşat Apak

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Excessive amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS), unless counterbalanced by antioxidants, can cause cellular damage under oxidative stress conditions; therefore, antioxidative defenses against ROS must be measured. With the development of nanotechnology, nanoparticles have found numerous applications in science, health, and industries. Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$:MNPs) have attracted attention because of their peroxidase-like activity. In this study, hydroxyl radicals (?OH) generated by MNPs-catalyzed degradation of H$_{2}$O$_{2}$ converted the N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DMPD) probe into its colored DMPD$^{•+}$ radical cation, which gave an absorbance maximum at λ = 553 nm. In the presence of antioxidants, $^{•}$OH was partly scavenged by antioxidants and produced less …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Three new 2-component unsubstituted (4P), diiodo- (5P), and dibromo- (6P) distyryl-BODIPY-bridged cyclotriphosphazene dimers were designed and synthesized. The newly synthesized BODIPY-cyclotriphosphazene systems were characterized by $^{1}$H, $^{13}$C, and $^{31}$P NMR spectroscopy. The photophysical properties of the distryl-BODIPYs (4-6) and BODIPY-cyclotriphosphazene dyads (4P-6P) were studied by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. In these derivatives, the bino-type cyclotriphosphazene derivative bearing unsubstituted BODIPY unit 4 P exhibited high fluorescence and no singlet oxygen generation due to the lack of spin converter. The attachment of heavy atoms (iodine and bromine) enabled the production of singlet oxygen. The bino-type BODIPY-cyclotriphosphazenes (5P and 6P) were …

New bis(isatins-thio/carbohydrazones) based on Schiff bases were prepared from terephthalaldehyde biscarbohydrazone and 5-substituted isatins in the presence of a drop of sulfuric acid under reflux in ethanol. Terephthalaldehyde bis(thio/carbohydrazone) was synthesized by the reaction of (thio)/carbohydrazide and terephthalaldehyde in the presence of a few drops of acetic acid under reflux in ethanol. The structures of these synthesized compounds were determined using IR, $^{1}$H NMR, and $^{13}$C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The in vitro antioxidant activity of all the compounds was determined by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH.) free radical scavenging method. Compound 2 showed the best antioxidant activity.

Cancer is one of the main global health problems. In order to develop novel antitumor agents, we synthesized 3,4-dihydropyrimidine-2(1H)-one (DHPM) and 2,6-diaryl-substituted pyridine derivatives as potential antitumor structures and evaluated their cytotoxic effects against several cancer cell lines. An easy and convenient method is reported for the synthesis of these derivatives, employing cobalt ferrite (CoFe$_{2}$ O$_{4}$ @SiO$_{2}$ -SO$_{3}$ H) magnetic nanoparticles under microwave irradiation and solvent-free conditions. The structural characteristics of the prepared nanocatalyst were investigated by FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TGA techniques. In vitro cytotoxic effects of the synthesized products were assessed against the human breast adenocarcinoma cell line …
