Impacts Of Variation In Food Availability On Spatial Habitat Use Of Breeding And Non-Breeding Red Crossbills (Loxia Curvirostra), Liam Pendleton Jan 2020

Impacts Of Variation In Food Availability On Spatial Habitat Use Of Breeding And Non-Breeding Red Crossbills (Loxia Curvirostra), Liam Pendleton

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Movement patterns, habitat use, and reproductive behavior are among many attributes impacted by the distribution of resources within habitats. Our study used radio telemetry to investigate the relationship between food availability and movement patterns of breeding and nonbreeding red crossbills (Loxia curvirostra). Crossbills were captured and tracked in different seasons and under conifer seed mast and non-mast conditions. Telemetry data were used to generate statistical models to analyze spatial habitat use. Total linear distance traveled per total area of the home range was used as a comparative measure of activity within home ranges across specimens. We found a …

Post Chemotherapeutic Treatment Impact On Pediatric Patients With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Roaa Alfarshooti Jan 2020

Post Chemotherapeutic Treatment Impact On Pediatric Patients With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Roaa Alfarshooti

Wayne State University Theses

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most prevalent type of leukemia among children. It is characterized by chromosomal and genetic variations and abnormalities occurring in the leukemic cells. Prognosis predictors of ALL depend on risk-based stratification and the reaction to the initial therapy. Current treatment regimens of ALL contribute to the survival of approximately 80% of pediatric ALL patients with 90% 5-year event-free survival. Based on the patient’s features impacting prognosis and risk of therapy failure, cases can be designated to receive the adequate type of treatment regimens. The higher the risk, the more aggressive, intensive, and toxic is the …

Text Mining Of Variant-Genotype-Phenotype Associations From Biomedical Literature, Nafiseh Saberian Jan 2020

Text Mining Of Variant-Genotype-Phenotype Associations From Biomedical Literature, Nafiseh Saberian

Wayne State University Theses

In spite of the efforts in developing and maintaining accurate variant databases, a large number of disease-associated variants are still hidden in the biomedical literature. Curation of the biomedical literature in an effort to extract this information is a challenging task due to i) the complexity of natural language processing, ii) inconsistent use of standard recommendations for variant description, and iii) the lack of clarity and consistency in describing the variant-genotype-phenotype associations in the biomedical literature. In this article, we employ text mining and word cloud analysis techniques to address these challenges. The proposed framework extracts the variant-gene-disease associations from …

Non-Canonical Targets, Reaction Kinetics, And Cellular Potency Of Amino Acid-Linked Platinum(Ii) Compounds, Bett Kimutai Jan 2020

Non-Canonical Targets, Reaction Kinetics, And Cellular Potency Of Amino Acid-Linked Platinum(Ii) Compounds, Bett Kimutai

Wayne State University Dissertations

DNA serve as an ideal target where drugs such as cisplatin (cisPt) bind and exert their anticancer activities. CisPt is known to preferentially coordinate with DNA leading to formation of cisPt-deoxyguanosine (dGuo) adducts. The adducts distort the DNA structure and contribute to inhibition of DNA-mediated cellular functions and ultimately cancer cell death. Despite its utilization as an anticancer drug, cisPt has a number of drawbacks, which include toxic side effects and cellular resistance. Resistance occurs through processes such as repair of damaged DNA and inactivation of cisPt present in the cell. To overcome these challenges, the aim of this thesis …

Single-Lipid Sorting And Dynamics At Nanoscale Membrane Curvatures: The Effects Of Fluorescence Labeling, Composition, Phase, And Temperature, Xinxin Woodward Jan 2020

Single-Lipid Sorting And Dynamics At Nanoscale Membrane Curvatures: The Effects Of Fluorescence Labeling, Composition, Phase, And Temperature, Xinxin Woodward

Wayne State University Dissertations

Nanoscale membrane curvature on cell plasma membrane assists in the spatial organization and domain formation that are critical for life of eukaryotic cells. Lipids and proteins can sense, be sorted by, and generate both functional domains and membrane curvature. Reveal the relationship between membrane curvature, phase separation, and single-molecule behavior is a key to understanding fundamental processes, such as phagocytosis initiation, cell signaling, and membrane budding. Single lipid dynamic and sorting on engineered membrane curvature is studied to understand the effects of fluorescence labeling, composition, phase separation, and temperature. Single particle tracking was used to find radial averaged diffusion at …

Evolutionary Ecology Of The Native Johnny Darter (Etheostoma Nigrum) And The Invasive Round Goby (Neogobius Melanostomus): A Genomic Perspective, Abby Joyce Wicks Jan 2020

Evolutionary Ecology Of The Native Johnny Darter (Etheostoma Nigrum) And The Invasive Round Goby (Neogobius Melanostomus): A Genomic Perspective, Abby Joyce Wicks

Wayne State University Dissertations

Round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) is an invasive fish present in all five Great Lakes and is becoming increasingly common in their tributaries. Johnny darter (Etheostoma nigrum) is a native species that often coexists with round goby. Here, I use traditional population genetic methods and genomic tools to explore the evolutionary ecology of these species. First, historic factors are addressed as a source of variation in study populations by characterizing patterns of mitochondrial DNA variation throughout Lower Michigan. Round goby populations were largely homogenous and exhibited no evidence of overarching historical genetic structure, consistent with the recent invasion and rapid expansion …

Illinois Childcare Parentage Law (R)Evolution, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2020

Illinois Childcare Parentage Law (R)Evolution, Jeffrey A. Parness

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

State childcare parentage laws, that is, laws designating parents for custody, visitation, parental responsibility allocation, parental decisionmaking and/or support purposes, have evolved dramatically in the past half century. The (r)evolution is due to major changes in both reproductive technologies and human conduct. Yet the (r)evolution is incomplete.

The (r)evolution is especially incomplete in Illinois. Recent statutory amendments in Illinois chiefly reflect the work of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws in its 2000 model Uniform Parentage Act, not its 2017 Uniform Parentage Act. The latter better addresses the effects on childcare parentage of the changes in …

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The SUMMIT-P project is a multi-institutional endeavor to leverage interdisciplinary collaboration in order to improve the teaching of undergraduate mathematics courses in the first two years of college. One goal of this work is to establish collaborative communities among the institutions involved. As part of the project, institutions visit one another on site visits that are structured according to a common protocol. The site visits have been valuable to the project. Participating institutions report the exchange of actionable ideas and feedback; members of the grant leadership team have used the site visits to direct the overall project, and evaluators have …

The Roles And Benefits Of Using Undergraduate Student Leaders To Support The Work Of Summit-P, Janet Bowers, Bryan D. Poole, Caroline Maher-Boulis, Ashley Schwartz, Angelica Bloomquist, Erica Slate Young

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The article by Poole, Turner, and Maher-Boulis (2020) describes one way in which undergraduates have been used to support the SUMMIT-P goal of investigating examples of how mathematics and statistics are applied in partner discipline courses. Two other universities in the SUMMIT-P consortium, San Diego State University and Oregon State University, also use undergraduates in different ways to support the work of integrating science applications into math classes. In this article, we compare and contrast these three uses to further highlight this somewhat untapped resource.

Feelings Of Incompleteness As Linking Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder And Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Examination Using A Computerized Approach-Avoidance Task, Sarah R. Lee Jan 2020

Feelings Of Incompleteness As Linking Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder And Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Examination Using A Computerized Approach-Avoidance Task, Sarah R. Lee

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the construct of incompleteness as it relates to both Obsessive-

Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Incompleteness is a

construct which was developed to describe symptoms of OCD which are not accounted for using

a traditional, harm-avoidance and fear-based conceptualization. Unlike harm-avoidance based

OCD, in which an individual engages in compulsions to prevent some feared outcome,

individuals with incompleteness-based OCD engage in compulsions to resolve an internal feeling

that their experience is uneven, asymmetrical, incomplete, or not-just-right.

Recently, researchers have begun to examine feelings of incompleteness in the context of

other disorders, such as ASD. …

Mixing Optimization In Grooved Serpentine Microchannels, Tyler Rhoades, Chandrasekhar R. Kothapalli, Petru S. Fodor

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Computational fluid dynamics modeling at Reynolds numbers ranging from 10 to 100 was used to characterize the performance of a new type of micromixer employing a serpentine channel with a grooved surface. The new topology exploits the overlap between the typical Dean flows present in curved channels due to the centrifugal forces experienced by the fluids, and the helical flows induced by slanted groove-ridge patterns with respect to the direction of the flow. The resulting flows are complex, with multiple vortices and saddle points, leading to enhanced mixing across the section …

Loss Of Foundation Species Revisited: Conceptual Framework With Lessons Learned From Eastern Hemlock And Whitebark Pine, Allyson L. Degrassi, Steven Brantley, Carrie R. Levine, Jacqueline Mohan, Sydne Record, Diana F. Tomback, Aaron M. Ellison Jan 2020

Loss Of Foundation Species Revisited: Conceptual Framework With Lessons Learned From Eastern Hemlock And Whitebark Pine, Allyson L. Degrassi, Steven Brantley, Carrie R. Levine, Jacqueline Mohan, Sydne Record, Diana F. Tomback, Aaron M. Ellison

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Ecologists and conservation biologists often prioritize the study of species that are declining, threatened, or endangered over species that are abundant and ecologically important, such as foundation species (FS ). Because entire ecosystems and their biodiversity depend on FS , we argue that they have high conservation priority. A citation analysis reveals that FS are studied, but often are characterized ambiguously. More effort is needed to identify FS before they, and the ecosystems they define, are at risk of decline or loss. We suggest a new conceptual framework that includes: informed identification of FS in ecosystems; documentation of ecosystem services …

Plant Species Determine Tidal Wetland Methane Response To Sea Level Rise, Peter Mueller, Thomas J. Mozdzer, J. Adam Langley, Lillian R. Aoki, Genevieve L. Noyce, J. Patrick Megonigal

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Blue carbon (C) ecosystems are among the most effective C sinks of the biosphere, but methane (CH4) emissions can offset their climate cooling effect. Drivers of CH4 emissions from blue C ecosystems and effects of global change are poorly understood. Here we test for the effects of sea level rise (SLR) and its interactions with elevated atmospheric CO2, eutrophication, and plant community composition on CH4 emissions from an estuarine tidal wetland. Changes in CH4 emissions with SLR are primarily mediated by shifts in plant community composition and associated plant traits that determine both the direction and magnitude of SLR effects …

Biology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Many research and monitoring networks in recent decades have provided publicly available data documenting environmental and ecological change, but little is known about the status of efforts to synthesize this information across networks. We convened a working group to assess ongoing and potential cross-network synthesis research and outline opportunities and challenges for the future, focusing on the US-based research network (the US Long-Term Ecological Research network, LTER) and monitoring network (the National Ecological Observatory Network, NEON). LTER-NEON cross-network research synergies arise from the potentials for LTER measurements, experiments, models, and observational studies to provide context and mechanisms for interpreting NEON …

Marrowquant Across Aging And Aplasia: A Digital Pathology Workflow For Quantification Of Bone Marrow Compartments In Histological Sections, Josefine Tratwal, Erica L Scheller, Et Al

Open Access Publications

The bone marrow (BM) exists heterogeneously as hematopoietic/red or adipocytic/yellow marrow depending on skeletal location, age, and physiological condition. Mouse models and patients undergoing radio/chemotherapy or suffering acute BM failure endure rapid adipocytic conversion of the marrow microenvironment, the so-called "red-to-yellow" transition. Following hematopoietic recovery, such as upon BM transplantation, a "yellow-to-red" transition occurs and functional hematopoiesis is restored. Gold Standards to estimate BM cellular composition are pathologists' assessment of hematopoietic cellularity in hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained histological sections as well as volumetric measurements of marrow adiposity with contrast-enhanced micro-computerized tomography (CE-μCT) upon osmium-tetroxide lipid staining. Due to user-dependent …

Open Access Publications

OBJECTIVE: Total ceramide concentrations are linked with increased insulin resistance and cardiac dysfunction. However, recent studies have demonstrated that plasma concentrations of specific very-long-chain fatty ceramides (C24:0 and C22:0) are associated with a reduced incidence of coronary heart disease and all-cause mortality. We hypothesized that specific genetic loci are associated with plasma C22:0 and C24:0 concentrations.

METHODS: Heritability and genome-wide association studies of plasma C24:0 and C22:0 ceramide concentrations were performed among 2,217 participants in the Framingham Heart Study Offspring Cohort, adjusting for cardiovascular risk factor covariates and cardiovascular drug treatment.

RESULTS: The multivariable-adjusted heritability for C22:0 and C24:0 ceramides …

The At(N) Framework For Alzheimer's Disease In Adults With Down Syndrome, Michael S Rafii, Beau M Ances, Et Al

Open Access Publications

The National Institute on Aging in conjunction with the Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) recently proposed a biological framework for defining the Alzheimer's disease (AD) continuum. This new framework is based upon the key AD biomarkers (amyloid, tau, neurodegeneration, AT[N]) instead of clinical symptoms and represents the latest understanding that the pathological processes underlying AD begin decades before the manifestation of symptoms. By using these same biomarkers, individuals with Down syndrome (DS), who are genetically predisposed to developing AD, can also be placed more precisely along the AD continuum. The A/T(N) framework is therefore thought to provide an objective manner by which …
