Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Norfolk State University (NSU) is the only public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) member institution in SUMMIT-P. At NSU, a strong collaboration between the Department of Mathematics and its partner discipline, the Department of Engineering, has been established for the Calculus I and Differential Equations classes as part of the SUMMIT-P project. In this paper, we record a brief history of this collaboration project at NSU, the various structures within the SUMMIT-P Project, the site visit that occurred in Spring 2019, and how recent activities helped guide the direction of the project at NSU.

Designing A Student Exchange Program: Facilitating Interdisciplinary, Mathematics-Focused Collaboration Among College Students, Bryan D. Poole, Linden Turner, Caroline Maher-Boulis
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
Interdisciplinary collaboration is necessary for students’ professional preparation (Laird et al., 2014; Repko, 2014) and may promote effective learning transfer of course content. Such collaborations have resulted in enhanced problem-solving skills and conceptual understanding of statistics content (Dierker et al., 2012; Everett, 2016; Hammersley et al., 2019; Woodzicka et al., 2015). As a result of ongoing collaborations between faculty members in different disciplines and at different universities, we created a “Student Exchange Program” to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration between undergraduate students in mathematics and social sciences. In the current paper, we describe past research that informed the design of this program, …
Privacy Or Protection: The Catch-22 Of The Ccpa, Diane Y. Byun
Privacy Or Protection: The Catch-22 Of The Ccpa, Diane Y. Byun
Loyola Consumer Law Review
On June 28, 2018, the California Legislature passed the nation's strictest data privacy law, the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 ("CCPA"). Although effective January 1, 2019, the provisions of the CCPA did not become operative until January 1, 2020. The CCPA enforces compliance obligations on any business that collects covered personal information about California residents ("Consumers") and exceeds one of three thresholds: (i) annual gross revenues of $25 million, (ii) collection of personal information for commercial purpose of 50,000 or more covered consumers, or (iii) 50% or more annual revenue from selling Consumers' personal information. This low threshold demonstrates …

Killing Wotus 2015: Why Three Rulemakings May Not Be Enough, Stephen M. Johnson
Killing Wotus 2015: Why Three Rulemakings May Not Be Enough, Stephen M. Johnson
Articles
This Article will discuss the procedural and substantive flaws in the three rulemaking efforts by the agencies. One or more of the rules (or the 2015 rule) will likely be litigated for the next several years and, ultimately, it is likely that the question of the scope of the federal government’s jurisdiction over “waters of the United States” will return to the Supreme Court. However, since challenges to those rules must originate in Federal district courts, it could take some time before the question returns to the Court.
Part II of this Article discusses the 2015 rule, including the motivation …

Integrating Lecture And Laboratory In Anatomy And Physiology: Student Perceptions And Performance, Jessica L. Peacock, Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Kevin E. Finn
Health Sciences Faculty Publications
The authors determined whether positive perceptions of integrating lecture and lab in Anatomy and Physiology courses persisted from 2015-2018. Students (843) and instructors (56) completed the Student Assessment of Their Learning Gains survey; perceptions were positive and consistent between both groups. Participant narratives identified the ability to immediately apply theoretical knowledge in lab as an important positive attribute in improving student learning. The authors also determined whether student performance rates, including unsatisfactory grades (C-, D, F, W), improved during integrated years. Results showed that unsatisfactory grades fell in the integrated years, while results for quiz and exam grades, compared between …
Contact Mechanics Of Fish Scale Inspired Exoskeletal Components On A Nonlinear Elastic Substrate, Jeremy Stephen
Contact Mechanics Of Fish Scale Inspired Exoskeletal Components On A Nonlinear Elastic Substrate, Jeremy Stephen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The contact mechanics of structures with exoskeletal components deviate significantly from classical Hertzian and non-linear models. In the case of fish scale inspired samples under blunt indentation loading these factors are inherently tied to both the size of the indenter and the scales' distribution and orientation. Control of these geometric parameters provides a pathway to tailor the properties of surfaces for better grip, damage mitigation and controlled deformation. This study explores the response of a substrate with stiff scales protruding from its surface, which is comprised of a soft elastomeric material with properties typical of those in soft robotics applications. …

The Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary: An Exploration Of Changing The Discourse On Conservation, Arielle Ben-Hur
Pitzer Senior Theses
In 2015, the Northern Chumash Tribal Council submitted a National Marine Sanctuary Nomination to establish the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary– a means by which to ensure the protection of one of the most culturally and biologically diverse coastlines in the world. On October 5, 2015, John Armor of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) responded to the nomination, adding it to the inventory of areas NOAA may consider in the future for national marine sanctuary designation.
In my thesis, I explore how the nomination of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary acts as a platform from which Traditional …

Characterizing Changes In The Colonic Epithelium Of Lrig3 Null Mice, Natalie Pedicino
Scripps Senior Theses
The lining of the colon, or colonic epithelium, is a very dynamic and highly regulated tissue in the human body. Colonic stem cells are a key component of this tissue, and they make up the stem cell niche, which is found at the base of the colonic crypt. Regeneration of the colonic epithelium, which occurs on a weekly basis, is a complex process, and proteins responsible for directing regeneration are still being discovered. Two critical regulatory proteins, Lrig1 and Lrig3, have been shown to modulate the EGFR pathway, a key signaling pathway for growth, differentiation, and regeneration. Data from the …
Detection And Localization Of Linear Features Based On Image Processing Methods, Sean Cormick Matz
Detection And Localization Of Linear Features Based On Image Processing Methods, Sean Cormick Matz
CGU Theses & Dissertations
In this work, the general problem of the detection of features in images is considered. One of the methods, the orientation detection of lines, utilized the Radon transform (sinogram) of an image to detect lines at different angles in an image. The line thickness algorithm was generated by finding a pattern formed by particular lines in an image. The filtering of reconstructed images dealt with the removal of blur and other artifacts that arose in the course of inverting the Radon transform of an image to attempt to obtain the original image.

Teaching Texting On A Smart Phone To Children And Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Jenna Gilder
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Children and adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have deficits in social communication ( Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders -5th edition, APA, 2013). These deficits are significantly pronounced when individuals with ASD attempt to engage in conversations. Due to advances in technology, children and adolescents are now conversing through computer mediated communication (CMC; Pew, 2015, 2018). Texting in particular is one popular form of CMC that may mitigate the non-verbal social skill deficits seen in individuals with ASD, such as eye contact and tone of voice. Despite the potential of texting and its' popularity as a CMC …

Exposome Factors: Exploratory Study Approach And The Role Of Persuasive Technology To Raise Awareness About The Exposome Concept, Abdulrahman Alzahrani
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Exposome is a new concept that emerged at the beginning of the 21st century to complement genome research. The exposome encompasses the entirety of a person’s environmental exposures from birth to death. This study focused on environmental rather than genetic factors that are related to chronic diseases. It had two phases. Phase 1 involved building a regression model aimed at investigating the influence of various indicators on cancer cases in Los Angeles County. The investigation of the potential correlation between the cancer cases based on census tract data and the exposome factors follows an exploratory approach. Multiple regression stepwise analysis …

Youth Of Promise: Academic Success And Future Stem Aspirations At An Alternative Education Program, Anthony Peña
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Providing an equitable science education to Black and Latinx youth who have dropped out of their traditional schools is a significant issue for three reasons: (a) it can provide a pathway to a quality employment opportunity, (b) success in science classes can support success in academics, and (c) development of youth who have an efficient and critical understanding of science phenomena is an issue of social justice. The idea that education is the great equalizer depends on many factors, such as socioeconomic status, racial background, and the zip code in which you live. Students of color (i.e., Black and Latinx) …

© 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd One of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics against Burkholderia infections is co-trimoxazole, a cocktail of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. Trimethoprim elicits an upregulation of the mal gene cluster, which encodes proteins involved in synthesis of the cytotoxic polyketide malleilactone; trimethoprim does so by increasing expression of the malR gene, which encodes the activator MalR. We report that B. thailandensis grown on trimethoprim exhibited increased virulence against Caenorhabditis elegans. This enhanced virulence correlated with an increase in expression of the mal gene cluster. Notably, inhibition of xanthine dehydrogenase by addition of allopurinol led to similar …

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0) Even though mutualistic interactions are ubiquitous in nature, we are still far from making good predictions about the fate of mutualistic communities under threats such as habitat fragmentation and climate change. Fragmentation often causes declines in abundance of a species due to increased susceptibility to edge effects between remnant habitat patches and lower quality “matrix” surrounding these focal patches. It has been argued that ecological communities are replete with trait-mediated indirect effects, and that these effects …

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0) The relationship between conspecific density and the probability of emigrating from a patch can play an essential role in determining the population-dynamic consequences of an Allee effect. In this paper, we model a population that inside a patch is diffusing and growing according to a weak Allee effect per-capita growth rate, but the emigration probability is dependent on conspecific density. The habitat patch is one-dimensional and is surrounded by a tuneable hostile matrix. We consider five …

Taxonomic Resolution Affects Host-Parasite Association Model Performance, Tad A. Dallas, Daniel J. Becker

© 2020 Georg Thieme Verlag. All rights reserved. Identifying the factors that structure host-parasite interactions is fundamental to understand the drivers of species distributions and to predict novel cross-species transmission events. More phylogenetically related host species tend to have more similar parasite associations, but parasite specificity may vary as a function of transmission mode, parasite taxonomy, or life history. Accordingly, analyses that attempt to infer host-parasite associations using combined data on different parasite groups may perform quite differently relative to analyses on each parasite subset. In essence, are more data always better when predicting host-parasite associations, or does parasite taxonomic …

Copyright 2020 Cicero et al. The New World sparrows (Passerellidae) are a large, diverse group of songbirds that vary in morphology, behavior, and ecology. Thus, they are excellent for studying trait evolution in a phylogenetic framework. We examined lability versus conservatism in morphological and behavioral traits in two related clades of sparrows (Aimophila, Peucaea), and assessed whether habitat has played an important role in trait evolution. We first inferred a multi-locus phylogeny which we used to reconstruct ancestral states, and then quantified phylogenetic signal among morphological and behavioral traits in these clades and in New World sparrows more broadly. Behavioral …

We then experimentally inoculated horses with EqPV-H and 8 of 10 horses developed hepatitis. One horse showed clinical signs of liver failure. The onset of hepatitis was temporally associated with seroconversion and …

© Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Purpose Studies suggest ketogenic diets (KD) produce favorable outcomes (health and exercise performance); however, most rodent studies have used a low-protein KD, which does not reflect the normal- to high-protein KD used by humans. Liver has an important role in ketoadaptation due to its involvement in gluconeogenesis and ketogenesis. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that exercise training (ExTr) while consuming a normal-protein KD (NPKD) would induce additive/synergistic responses in liver metabolic pathways. Methods Lean, healthy male C57BL/6J mice were fed a low-fat control diet (15.9% kcal protein, 11.9% kcal fat, 72.2% kcal …
