Happy Tears: An Evocative Autoethnography On An Adoptee’S Development Of Identity Through Reunification, Jessica Popham
Happy Tears: An Evocative Autoethnography On An Adoptee’S Development Of Identity Through Reunification, Jessica Popham
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
The story of adoption reunions is a story of many others. With the invention of the internet and DNA profiling websites, what was once impossible, or very difficult, is now as simple as submitting saliva to a DNA profiling company. This easier way to explore family backgrounds has created new experiences for adoptees. After a reunification, adoptees can reevaluate their identity with the new information to help develop a broader and deeper view of themselves (Henze-Pederson, 2019; Kiecolt & LoMascolo, 2003; Palmer, 2011; Schooler & Norris, 2002). In this study, I looked at how my adoptive identity changed after reunification …
The Conundrum Of Both/And In A World Of Either/Or: An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Of Resilience And Intersectional Identities In Queer Women Of Afro-Caribbean Descent, Stephane Louis
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Queer people of color are more at risk for bias and brutality than other sexual or racial minority groups (Follins, Walker, & Lewis, 2014). Homophobic violence is embedded in Afro-Caribbean culture and even substantiated by some of those countries’ laws (Calixte, 2005). While more research is being increasingly done on LGBTQ+ black lived experiences, studies have focused more on discriminatory trauma than everyday triumph. Movements like Black Girls Rock (Bond, 2018) and intersectional black feminism (Nash, 2018) celebrate women of color surviving and thriving the compound effects of racism and sexism. In addition to misogynoir, this research gave consideration to …
The Impact Of Grief Work On Hospice Mental Health Providers Through A Bowen Family Systems Lens, Joshua Hernandez
The Impact Of Grief Work On Hospice Mental Health Providers Through A Bowen Family Systems Lens, Joshua Hernandez
Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects
Marriage and family therapists and other mental health professionals and clients can be thought of as their own, divine emotional unit, generating and distributing the anxiety of one to the other. In fact, Kerr and Bowen (1988) described anxiety as a driving force exchanged by every living organism, and the energy surrounded by every human relationship. Within a hospice setting, anxiety can be heightened due to catering to end-of-life care, which can potentially affect the emotional response and reactivity of the mental health professional, changing the course of treatment for the patient and their family. Emerging research within healthcare has …

Tailormade : Fine Art Merchandise, Mirabelle Alan
Tailormade : Fine Art Merchandise, Mirabelle Alan
MA Projects
This Master’s Thesis Project proposes a three-year business plan for establishing TAILORMADE, an online platform that develops fine art merchandise through accessible means to combat intellectual property theft from emerging artists. It analyzes how merchandise is used as a method in transforming the ways we create, buy and sell art. It also addresses how fast-fashion stores use their mass-produced merchandise as to copy artworks from emerging artists without consent or compensation. Through this analysis, TAILORMADE proposes a company that sells merchandise made by the artist, for the art lover, and that maintains artistic integrity.
TAILORMADE also taps into an emerging …
Acceleration Of Coronal Mass Ejection Plasma In The Low Corona As Measured By The Citizen Cate Experiment, Ignacio Birriel, Jennifer J. Birriel
Acceleration Of Coronal Mass Ejection Plasma In The Low Corona As Measured By The Citizen Cate Experiment, Ignacio Birriel, Jennifer J. Birriel
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
The citizen Continental-America Telescopic Eclipse (CATE) Experiment was a new type of citizen science experiment designed to capture a time sequence of white-light coronal observations during totality from 17:16 to 18:48 UT on 2017 August 21. Using identical instruments the CATE group imaged the inner corona from 1 to 2.1 RSun with 1 43 pixels at a cadence of 2.1 s. A slow coronal mass ejection (CME) started on the SW limb of the Sun before the total eclipse began. An analysis of CATE data from 17:22 to 17:39 UT maps the spatial distribution of coronal flow velocities from about …

Benthic foraminifera Mg/Ca is a well-established bottom water temperature (BWT) proxy used in paleoclimate studies. The relationship between Mg/Ca and BWT for numerous species has been determined using core-top and culturing studies. However, the scarcity of calcareous microfossils in Antarctic shelf sediments and poorly defined calibrations at low temperatures has limited the use of the foraminiferal Mg/Ca paleothermometer in ice proximal Antarctic sediments. Here we present paired ocean temperature and modern benthic foraminifera Mg/Ca data for three species, Trifarina angulosa, Bulimina aculeata, and Globocassidulina subglobosa, but with a particular focus on Trifarina angulosa. The core-top data from several …

The Impact Of Cooperative Learning Methods Grades 6-12, Nathan Jon Anderson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cooperative Learning methods are reviewed compared to traditional teaching methods in grades 6-12. Grades 6-12 present a time when students are beginning to explore careers and understanding their niche in the world of work. The research question centers on does cooperative learning contribute to greater student achievement than traditional learning. Five key student success markers were explored, including: self-efficacy, achievement, cater to diverse learners, collaboration, and promoting critical thinking to answer the research question. Many cooperative learning method experts’ methods were looked into including Teams Games Tournaments (TGT), Think Pair Share, (TPS), Student Team Achievement Division (STAD), Collaborative Strategic Reading …
Helen Frankenthaler : The Calculus For Gender Neutrality Within The Post Abstractionist Color Field Movement, Aelxandra H. Dodge
Helen Frankenthaler : The Calculus For Gender Neutrality Within The Post Abstractionist Color Field Movement, Aelxandra H. Dodge
MA Theses
In a decade marked by the omnipresence of black-and-white television, McCarthyism, the end of the Korean War and the fledgling sounds of rock n’ roll, the 1950s invited American artists to utilize color in forms and abstractions to challenge the domesticated, safe boundaries established by European masters. The 1950s perpetuated dominate male, decision–making stereotyping while subordinating females as submissive, adorned homemakers. Sandwiched between the creative genius and evolution of the U.S abstract expressionist movement of the 1940s and the emerging pop artists of the 1960s, the 1950s signaled the development and the ascendency of Helen Frankenthaler. As a woman artist …
Radical Queer Gazes : How Lesbian And Nonbinary Contemporary Photographers Are Destabilizing The Male Gaze, Eliza Mcdonough
Radical Queer Gazes : How Lesbian And Nonbinary Contemporary Photographers Are Destabilizing The Male Gaze, Eliza Mcdonough
MA Theses
Laura Mulvey’s 1975 essay Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema laid the groundwork for feminist theory surrounding the objectification of women in media by introducing the concept of the male gaze. Since its publication, theorists and critics have responded by proposing the possibility of alternate gazes such as the female gaze, the black gaze, and the queer gaze. This thesis will analyze those responses along with the psychoanalytical backing of Mulvey’s original theory to determine how the heteropatriachal structure Mulvey presents can be dismantled through alternative identity gazes. Mulvey’s original proposition is limited by her focus on the relationship between white …
Comparative Gene Expression Profiling Between Optic Nerve And Spinal Cord Injury In Xenopus Laevis Reveals A Core Set Of Genes Inherent In Successful Regeneration Of Vertebrate Central Nervous System Axons, Kurt M. Gibbs
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Background: The South African claw-toed frog, Xenopus laevis, is uniquely suited for studying differences between regenerative and non-regenerative responses to CNS injury within the same organism, because some CNS neurons (e.g., retinal ganglion cells after optic nerve crush (ONC)) regenerate axons throughout life, whereas others (e.g., hindbrain neurons after spinal cord injury (SCI)) lose this capacity as tadpoles metamorphose into frogs. Tissues from these CNS regions (frog ONC eye, tadpole SCI hindbrain, frog SCI hindbrain) were used in a three-way RNAseq study of axotomized CNS axons to identify potential core gene expression programs for successful CNS axon regeneration.
Results: Despite …

Warsaw grouper, Hyporthodus nigritus, is a western Atlantic Ocean species typically found at depths between 55 and 525 m. It is listed as a species of concern by the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service and as near threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. However, little information exists on the species’ life history in the northern Gulf of Mexico (nGOM) and its stock status in that region is currently unknown. Age of nGOM Warsaw grouper was investigated via opaque zone counts in otolith thin sections (max age = 61 y), and then the bomb 14C chronometer …

Passive acoustic monitoring has become an important data collection method, yielding massive datasets replete with biological, environmental and anthropogenic information. Automated signal detectors and classifiers are needed to identify events within these datasets, such as the presence of species-specific sounds or anthropogenic noise. These automated methods, however, are rarely a complete substitute for expert analyst review. The ability to visualize and annotate acoustic events efficiently can enhance scientific insights from large, previously intractable datasets. A MATLAB-based graphical user interface, called DetEdit, was developed to accelerate the editing and annotating of automated detections from extensive acoustic datasets. This tool is highly-configurable …
The Impact That Student’S Homelife Have On Their Ability To Achieve Success In School, Annmarie T. Umland
The Impact That Student’S Homelife Have On Their Ability To Achieve Success In School, Annmarie T. Umland
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The homelife of an adolescent has a profound impact on their ability to find success in school. Students who come from a family that is made up of a single parent, divorced parents, homelessness, and some other non-traditional family configurations are more likely to be unsuccessful in school and develop unwanted psychological adjustments. This research explores how a student’s homelife affects their success in school from the views of both a traditional and non-traditional family type. It also focuses on the impact that teachers and school communities can have on a student’s success, regardless of their upbringing. Through this research, …
Evaluating Environmental And Social Impacts Of Fluorescent Lamp Recycling Processes In Thailand, Ella Nanda Sari
Evaluating Environmental And Social Impacts Of Fluorescent Lamp Recycling Processes In Thailand, Ella Nanda Sari
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
For the past decade, Thailand has had intensively installed Fluorescent Lamp (FL) for lighting purposes. Improper handling or disposal of a spent fluorescent lamp can cause not only environmental damage by releasing mercury and other metals to the environment but also human health impact. Master Plan on Solid Waste Management (2016-2021) of Thailand encouraged industrial waste management to reduce such impacts with less consideration of the social challenges experienced by the formal recyclers that might offset the sustainability of the recycling process. This research aimed to identify enabling factors to improve the recycling process of SFLs using environmental life cycle …

Role Of Central Sensitivity Syndromes In Women With Pelvic Organ Prolapse, Monika Vij
Role Of Central Sensitivity Syndromes In Women With Pelvic Organ Prolapse, Monika Vij
Peninsula Medical School Theses
Title- Role of Central Sensitivity Syndromes in Women with Pelvic Organ Prolapse. Author- Monika Vij Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) is a dysfunction of pelvic floor support and have an ad-verse effect on the quality of life (QOL). The predominant symptom is the feeling of a vaginal bulge. However, a considerable proportion of women report a sensation of dragging, or pelvic pressure vaginally without a bulge or large objective prolapse being present. A mechanism suggested to explain this anomaly describes the augmentation of pain transmission secondary to central sensitization (CS). This explanation is like the pathophysiological changes postulated for central sensitivity …
More Than Tea And Cake: A Realist Evaluation Of Memory Cafés In Cornwall, Lisa Burrows
More Than Tea And Cake: A Realist Evaluation Of Memory Cafés In Cornwall, Lisa Burrows
School of Nursing and Midwifery Theses
Background: Memory cafés are a growing community based response to supporting people living with dementia and their carers. They are now well established in the UK and elsewhere; with over forty cafés in Cornwall. Despite their growth, there has been little research into their structure, aims and impact. Aims: The aim of this research was to explore how and why memory cafés work for people living with dementia and their carers. Methodology: Realist methodology is a theory driven approach that seeks to explain why a programme works, for whom and in what circumstances. The research consisted of three stages. Firstly, …
Investigating The Synergistic Bioactive Effects Of Fruit, Vegetable And Protein Combinations In A Market-Ready Food Product For Young Adults, Jessica Eivers
Investigating The Synergistic Bioactive Effects Of Fruit, Vegetable And Protein Combinations In A Market-Ready Food Product For Young Adults, Jessica Eivers
Theses
Diets high in fruits and vegetables (FV), are widely recommended for their health-promoting properties. A low intake of FV among young adults, is associated with the risk of developing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), hypertension, osteoporosis, obesity, type 2 diabetes, dental caries, hypercholesterolemia and certain cancers in later life. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), despite an increasing awareness of the health benefits of FV, consumption by young adult’s remains below the recommended intake of 400g per day. This project aims to develop innovative, FV products for young adults with demonstrated bioactivity and high nutrient density. Initially, …
How Stereotypes About Indians Are Used To Promote Abortion Restrictions In The United States?, Sital Kalantry
How Stereotypes About Indians Are Used To Promote Abortion Restrictions In The United States?, Sital Kalantry
National Law School of India Review
Many state legislatures in the United States (‘U.S.’) have passed restrictions on abortion for purposes of selecting the sex of the child. Advocates for these bans are using the widespread crises of sex-selective abortion in India to push for the prohibitions in the U.S. They argue that immigrants from India abort female fetuses at the same rates as people who live in India. This narrative misunderstands that sex-selective abortions are, in part, related to structural factors in society. It also wrongly assumes that Indian immigrants act in the same ways as people living in India. This view gained support from …

The Enduring Gaps And Errors In Capital Sentencing In India, Anup Surendranath, Neetika Vishwanath, Preeti Pratishruti Dash
National Law School of India Review
In the forty years since Bachan Singh upheld the constitutional validity of the death penalty in May 1980, there have been numerous concerns about the fate of the death penalty sentencing framework laid down by the majority. Inconsistent application, interpretational errors, and judge-centric decision making have dominated these concerns. However, this article seeks to revisit the premise of those narratives, i.e. these concerns have emerged as a result of the incorrect application of Bachan Singh. The focus is instead turned to the gaps within Bachan Singh itself and the manner in which those gaps have contributed to the subsequent fate …
Examining Communication Patterns And Identity In Families With Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Amber L. Alvey
Examining Communication Patterns And Identity In Families With Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard Of Hearing, Amber L. Alvey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“Deafness in the context of the hearing family attacks the backbone of the family structure, namely communication” (Ahlert & Greeff, 2012, p. 402). There is a link between communication and identity, specifically the role of communication on identity (Jung & Hecht, 2004). The purpose of this study is to better understand the experiences of families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing by investigating the relationship between family communication patterns and identity. In this study, I conducted in-depth interviews with the parents of children who are hard of hearing to investigate family communication patterns and identity. Using Family …

In Situ Analysis Of Line-1 Promoter Activity Using Lacz Transgenic Mice, Partha Sarathi Saha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Apart from an evolutionary role, transposable elements have been implicated in animal development and also in pathophysiology. Non-LTR retrotransposons– LINE-1, Alu and SVA - are responsible for over 120 cases of human genetic diseases as heritable insertions, and are emerging as an important etiological factor for cancer and neurological disorders as somatic mutations. It is estimated that among the total number of 500,000 LINE-1s presents in the human genome, 80-100 LINE-1s remain competent for retrotransposition. Retrotransposition is only possible when LINE-1 is expressed. Because LINE-1 transcription is regulated by its 5’UTR promoter, it is essential to understand the spatiotemporal control …
Mechanistic Studies To Understand The Role Of Human Gut Microbiota In Colonization Resistance And Gut Health, Sudeep Ghimire
Mechanistic Studies To Understand The Role Of Human Gut Microbiota In Colonization Resistance And Gut Health, Sudeep Ghimire
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Human gut microbiota is comprised of thousands of species which fall into two major categories or “enterotypes” based on dominating bacteria: “Bacteroides” and “Prevotella”. Bacteroides enterotype dominates the microbiota of the western population because of a high protein and fat diet, whereas Prevotella enterotype is dominate in the gut of the eastern population because of a high carbohydrate diet. While most of the microbiota studies focused on the Bacteroides enterotype using both metagenomics and culturomics, Prevotella enterotype is understudied, especially in the field of culturomics. The structure of the Prevotella dominated gut microbiome is revealed by …
Genomic And Culturomic Analysis Of Gut Microbiota Function And Salmonella Enterica Expansion, Gavin Fenske
Genomic And Culturomic Analysis Of Gut Microbiota Function And Salmonella Enterica Expansion, Gavin Fenske
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Enteric bacteria that are resident in the hindgut of mammals are critical in immune development, digestion, and colonization resistance against pathogens. One of the major pathogens that gut commensals provide resistance against is Salmonella enterica, a major foodborne pathogen capable of infecting almost every warm-blooded animal. Given the interplay between pathogens and commensals in the gut lumen, the gut microbiota of pigs was studied by combining two disparate techniques: shotgun metagenomics and high throughput culturomics. Metagenomics readily identifies major taxa present in samples and can give an estimation to total genetic catalogue from an environment. However, many rare or …
