Developing A Watershed-Scale Baseline For Tidal Wetlands, Nicholas A. Procopio, Robert Hazen, Michael P. Weinstein, Meiyin Wu, Danlin Yu

New Jersey Center for Water Science & Technology Reports

Tidal wetlands are critical habitat for the maintenance of secondary production of nekton. This study addresses two key factors: the specific structural and functional traits of coastal wetlands that make them conducive to supporting the secondary production of nekton and how individual components of the marsh are inter-connected to form a functional whole. Structural characteristics of relatively undisturbed tidal wetlands have been determined by meta-analysis from more than 500 papers and in-situ measurements and remote sensing of New Jersey wetland sites. Meta-analysis (Hedges’ d values and 95% confidence intervals) has shown that restored sites compare favorably with undisturbed sites in …

Dementia is a group of irreversible, chronic, and progressive neurodegenerative disorders resulting in impaired memory, communication, and thought processes. In recent years, clinical research advances in brain aging have focused on the earliest clinically detectable stage of incipient dementia, commonly known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Currently, these disorders are diagnosed using a manual analysis of neuropsychological examinations. We measure the feasibility of using the linguistic characteristics of verbal utterances elicited during neuropsychological exams of elderly subjects to distinguish between elderly control groups, people with MCI, people diagnosed with possible Alzheimer's disease (AD), and probable AD. We investigated the performance …

Hierarchical Anomaly Detection For Time Series Data, Ryan E. Sperl Jan 2020

Hierarchical Anomaly Detection For Time Series Data, Ryan E. Sperl

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

With the rise of Big Data and the Internet of Things, there is an increasing availability of large volumes of real-time streaming data. Unusual occurrences in the underlying system will be reflected in these streams, but any human analysis will quickly become out of date. There is a need for automatic analysis of streaming data capable of identifying these anomalous behaviors as they occur, to give ample time to react. In order to handle many high-velocity data streams, detectors must minimize the processing requirements per value. In this thesis, we have developed a novel anomaly detection method which makes use …

Veterans are a unique population and share a common experience: reintegration. The reintegration period can be a challenging experience, and affects things such as mental health and overall adjustment to civilian life. In order to examine reintegration more closely, interviews conducted by the Wright State’s Veterans Voices Project were used to complete this study. A checklist was used and consisted of nine themes identified in the relative literature related to reintegration: intimate relationships, familial relationships, children, education, employment, physical health, mental health, coping, and identity. Of the nine categories, employment was discussed most often (59.5%). Mental health was only discussed …

Exploring The Multiplex Detection Capabilities Of Raman Spectroscopy On Mock Street Samples Containing Illicitly Manufactured Fentanyls, Mia Laverne Williams Burnett

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Illicitly manufactured fentanyls (IMFs) have become a global and local epidemic and have recently caused an increase in the number of accidental exposures and overdoses in first responders and the community. The aim of the research is to explore a method to discriminate between IMFs and cutting agents in mock street samples using Raman Spectroscopy. Predominant Raman bands corresponding to the structural moieties of each individual illicit, licit drugs, and cutting agents were tracked, then used to discriminate between varying components in a mock street sample. In conclusion, discrimination between the components in the mixture was obtained using Raman Spectroscopy. …

Garlic mustard is an invasive Eurasian biennial that has spread throughout the eastern United States and southern Canada. Populations of this plant vary in their susceptibility to Erysiphe cruciferarum, a causal agent of powdery mildew disease in Brassicaceous plants. We examined whether there were biogeographic patterns in the distribution of resistance in invasive North American and native European populations of this plant. We grew plants from 78 invasive and 20 native populations and screened them for powdery mildew resistance in the greenhouse. We found that populations were mostly monomorphic for either resistance or susceptibility but that some polymorphic populations …

Larval Performance Of A Major Forest Pest On Novel Hosts And The Effect Of Stressors, Donnie Lee Peterson, Don Cipollini Jan 2020

Larval Performance Of A Major Forest Pest On Novel Hosts And The Effect Of Stressors, Donnie Lee Peterson, Don Cipollini

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Novel hosts lacking a coevolutionary history with herbivores can often support improved larval performance over historic hosts; e.g., emerald ash borer [Agrilus planipennis (Fairmaire) Coleoptera: Buprestidae] on North American ash (Fraxinus spp.) trees. Whether trees are novel or ancestral, stress on plants increases emerald ash borer preference and performance. White fringetree [Chionanthus virginicus (L.) Lamiales: Oleaceae] and olive [Olea europaea (L.) Lamiales: Oleaceae] are closely related non-ash hosts that support development of emerald ash borer to adulthood, but their relative suitability as hosts and the impact of plant stress on larval success has not been well …

On The Potential For Saturated Buffers In Northwest Ohio To Remediate Nutrients From Agricultural Runoff, Stephen J. Jacquemin, Gregory J. Mcglinch, Theresa Dirksen, Angela Clayton Jan 2020

On The Potential For Saturated Buffers In Northwest Ohio To Remediate Nutrients From Agricultural Runoff, Stephen J. Jacquemin, Gregory J. Mcglinch, Theresa Dirksen, Angela Clayton

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Nutrient loading from nonpoint source runoff in the Midwest has emerged as one of the largest threats to water quality as the frequency of harmful algal blooms, hypoxic zones, and issues associated with human-resource interactions have risen abruptly over the past several decades. In this study, a saturated buffer ~500 m in length located in the western basin of the Lake Erie watershed was evaluated for its potential to reduce edge of field runoff and nutrient loading. Saturated buffers reduce runoff by routing subsurface tile drainage water into the riparian zone, providing an opportunity for drainage volume as well as …

Uptake, Metabolism, And Elimination Of Fungicides From Coated Wheat Seeds In Japanese Quail (Coturnix Japonica), Michael S. Gross, Thomas G. Bean, Michelle L. Hladik, Barnett A. Rattner, Kathryn M. Kuivila Jan 2020

Uptake, Metabolism, And Elimination Of Fungicides From Coated Wheat Seeds In Japanese Quail (Coturnix Japonica), Michael S. Gross, Thomas G. Bean, Michelle L. Hladik, Barnett A. Rattner, Kathryn M. Kuivila

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Pesticides coated to the seed surface potentially pose an ecological risk to granivorous birds that consume incompletely buried or spilled seeds. To assess the toxicokinetics of seeds treated with current-use fungicides, Japanese quail ( Coturnix japonica) were orally dosed with commercially coated wheat seeds. Quail were exposed to metalaxyl, tebuconazole, and fludioxonil at either a low dose (0.0655, 0.0308, and 0.0328 mg/kg of body weight, respectively) or a high dose (0.196, 0.0925, and 0.0985 mg/kg of body weight, respectively). Fungicides were rapidly absorbed and distributed to tissues. Tebuconazole was metabolized into tert-butylhydroxy-tebuconazole. All compounds were eliminated to below detection limits …

Predictive Accuracy Of Recommender Algorithms, William Blake Noffsinger Jan 2020

Predictive Accuracy Of Recommender Algorithms, William Blake Noffsinger

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Recommender systems present a customized list of items based upon user or item characteristics with the objective of reducing a large number of possible choices to a smaller ranked set most likely to appeal to the user. A variety of algorithms for recommender systems have been developed and refined including applications of deep learning neural networks. Recent research reports point to a need to perform carefully controlled experiments to gain insights about the relative accuracy of different recommender algorithms, because studies evaluating different methods have not used a common set of benchmark data sets, baseline models, and evaluation metrics. The …

Fifteen Years Of Counting Winter Raptors At Santa Cruz Flats, Pinal County, Az, Doug Jenness Jan 2020

Fifteen Years Of Counting Winter Raptors At Santa Cruz Flats, Pinal County, Az, Doug Jenness

Arizona Birds

Between 2006 and 2020 volunteers conducted an annual 1-day January raptor count at the Santa Cruz Flats in Pinal County, Arizona. Surveying designated sections of this agricultural area, teams counted wintering raptors. The data show that numbers fluctuate from year to year, but discernible trends are not evident. Exceptions are White-tailed Kite (Elanus leucurus), observed in early years of the count but not reported since 2009, and Crested Caracara (Caracara cheriway), whose numbers have substantially increased. Placed in the context of broader knowledge about raptors at this location, these data set a potentially useful baseline for evaluating plans that could …

Changing Seasonal Status And First Known Breeding Activity Of Rufous-Backed Robin In The United States, Christina Kondrat-Smith, Troy Corman Jan 2020

Changing Seasonal Status And First Known Breeding Activity Of Rufous-Backed Robin In The United States, Christina Kondrat-Smith, Troy Corman

Arizona Birds

Rufous-backed Robin (Turdus rufopalliatus) observations in the southwestern U.S. have steadily increased during the past decade, particularly in Arizona. This includes late spring and summer records. From fall 2017 through winter 2018, unprecedented numbers of these robins were documented in Arizona, with some lingering well into May. Then in June 2018, observers first noted breeding activity from a pair of Rufous-backed Robins in Ramsey Canyon, Huachuca Mountains, in southeastern Arizona. Breeding activity observed included singing, collecting nesting material, territorial chase bouts with nearby American Robins (Turdus migratorius), and ultimately, feeding nestlings and fledglings. This nesting endeavor was intermittently monitored and …

Bark-Foragers May Use Artificially Created Holes In Trees As A Foraging Cue, Ruby L. Hammond, Yazhmin A. Dozal, Tad C. Theimer Jan 2020

Bark-Foragers May Use Artificially Created Holes In Trees As A Foraging Cue, Ruby L. Hammond, Yazhmin A. Dozal, Tad C. Theimer

Arizona Birds

Little is known about cues used by insectivorous bark-foraging birds to locate prey. Because vision is thought to be the primary sensory system used by many avifauna to perceive the environment, we conducted an experiment to assess if insectivorous bark-foragers in northern Arizona forests used holes in trees as foraging cues. We set up 20 experimental stations, each consisting of a pair of equally sized ponderosa pines (Pinus ponderosa) that had no previous holes created by foraging woodpeckers or emergent boring-beetles. For each pair of trees, we drilled holes into one of the trees (treatment tree) and did not drill …

Developmental Implications Of Child Maltreatment: Rorschach Assessment Of Object Relations, David Joubert, Linda Webster Jan 2020

Developmental Implications Of Child Maltreatment: Rorschach Assessment Of Object Relations, David Joubert, Linda Webster

Benerd College Faculty Articles

Child maltreatment is associated with a variety of negative psychological, social and health outcomes. It is particularly important for healthcare professionals to assess psychosocial functioning in children and adolescents in foster care, in order to facilitate optimal levels of adjustment in this population. The relative validity of two developmentally-based scales applied to Rorschach data, the Primitive Object Relations scheme (Kwawer, 1979) and the Developmental Object Relations Scale (Ipp, 1986), was investigated in a sample of 71 youth in foster care. Results from dimension reduction analyses suggest that the POR captures specific elements of primitive object relations, characterized by themes of …

Perceptions On Teacher And Collective Efficacy While Platooning Over An Academic Year: A Case Study Of Three Elementary Educators, Alison Kay Ducharm Jan 2020

Perceptions On Teacher And Collective Efficacy While Platooning Over An Academic Year: A Case Study Of Three Elementary Educators, Alison Kay Ducharm

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Due to increased accountability requirements under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and, most recently, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), educators and administrators face intensified pressure to increase students’ achievement in their schools. Changing how classrooms are organized for instruction has been one response to this pressure. Platooning at the elementary level is one example of such an organizational change; however, very little research specifically addresses platooning at the elementary-level. Therefore, many interested school districts are faced with making an uninformed decision about platooning, particularly at the elementary level.

This qualitative study studied the perception of platooning on teacher and …
