Applications Of Social Systems Theory Relative To Inclusivity In The Context Of K–12 Schools, Tessa R. Sutton Jan 2020

Applications Of Social Systems Theory Relative To Inclusivity In The Context Of K–12 Schools, Tessa R. Sutton

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This single case study explored K–12 school leaders perceptions of their districts structure for implementing diversity and creating inclusion as a framework (Getzels & Guba, 1957). Previous research that highlighted the views and perceptions of school leaders with respect to diversity and inclusion in schools as social systems focused on the humane side of the behaviors of individuals (Hoy & Miskel, 2005). Nevertheless, traditional Educational leadership programs typically focus on accreditation factors specific to lesson planning, classroom management, and curriculum implementation and exclude the human element (Duffett et al., 2003; Johnson, 2016). The lack of focus on change management systems …

Soil Structure And Texture Effects On The Precision Of Soil Water Content Measurements With A Capacitance-Based Electromagnetic Sensor, Jasreman Singh, Derek M. Heeren, Daran Rudnick, Wayne Woldt, Geng Bai, Yufeng Ge, Joe D. Luck

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The physical properties of soil, such as structure and texture, can affect the performance of an electromagnetic sensor in measuring soil water content. Historically, calibrations have been performed on repacked samples in the laboratory and on in situ soils in the field, but little research has been done on laboratory calibrations with intact (undisturbed) soil cores. In this study, three replications each of disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected from two soil texture classes (Yutan silty clay loam and Fillmore silt loam) at a field site in eastern Nebraska to investigate the effects of soil structure and texture on …

An Automated Seepage Meter For Streams And Lakes, Douglas Kip Solomon, Eric Humphrey, Troy E. Gilmore, David P. Genereux, Vitaly A. Zlotnik Jan 2020

An Automated Seepage Meter For Streams And Lakes, Douglas Kip Solomon, Eric Humphrey, Troy E. Gilmore, David P. Genereux, Vitaly A. Zlotnik

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

We describe a new automatic seepage meter for use in soft bottom streams and lakes. The meter utilizes a thin‐walled tube that is inserted into the streambed or lakebed. A hole in the side of the tube is fitted with an electric valve. Prior to the test, the valve is open and the water level inside the tube is the same as the water level outside the tube. The test starts with closure of the valve, and the water level inside the tube changes as it moves toward the equilibrium hydraulic head that exists at the bottom of the tube. …

Treatment Of Combined Acid Black 48 And Coffee Wastewater By Low-Cost Adsorbents, Yung-Tse Hung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

© 2020, Kaunas University of Technology. All rights reserved. Removal of synthetic dyes from wastewater is essential both from the environmental and human health point of view. A small concentration of synthetic dyes can reduce water transparency and consequently influence photosynthesis and alter aquatic ecosystems. Acid black 48 is an Azo dye that falls under the category of synthetic dyes used in the textile industry. With dyes, coffee wastewater has high chemical oxygen demand (COD) that can affect dissolved oxygen (DO) in surface waters. A mixture of wastes in surface waters creates a need to investigate the efficiency of existing …

Treatment Of Vegetable Oil Refining Wastes, D. Kaya, Yung-Tse Hung Jan 2020

Treatment Of Vegetable Oil Refining Wastes, D. Kaya, Yung-Tse Hung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The common vegetable oils are soybean, sesame, sunflower, corn, canola, and cotton seeds. Their yields, compositions and physical and chemical properties determine their usefulness in various applications aside edible uses. Crude oils obtained by pressing of such vegetable seeds are not usually considered to be edible before the removal of various nonglyceride compounds through operations known as refining. The refining processes remove undesirable materials such as phospholipids, monoacylglycerols, diacylglycerols, free fatty acids, colour and pigments, oxidised materials, etc., but, may also remove valuable minor components such as antioxidants and vitamins (carotenes and tocopherols). The major steps involved in chemical refining …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

According to the Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), creating a robust next-generation domestic bioenergy industry is an essential pathway for providing sustainable renewable energy alternatives. Using non-food feedstocks, like corn-stover and forest residue, in the biorefineries doesn't affect the food supply chain. In the commercial-scale bioenergy operations, a significant development in the technological advancements is required to determine the biomass feedstock quality at the preprocessing stage. The penetrating ability of the x-rays helps study the big biomass bales, but the feedstock heterogeneity—physical size, shape, and chemical composition—poses a significant challenge during milling, conveyance, feeding, and biofuel conversion processes. The inherent complexity …

Qualitative Inquiry, Jeanne Marecek, E. Magnusson Jan 2020

Qualitative Inquiry, Jeanne Marecek, E. Magnusson

Psychology Faculty Works

Qualitative inquiry is a form of psychological research that seeks in-depth understanding of people and their social worlds. Qualitative researchers typically study the experiences of people as meaning-making agents, relying on verbal material. Qualitative inquiry has a long history in psychology, beginning in the 19th century with founders of psychology like William James and Wilhelm Wundt. However, for much of the 20th century, qualitative inquiry has occupied a marginal position in the discipline. This marginalization is best understood in relation to the discipline’s early struggle to be regarded as legitimate. Adopting the methods of the natural sciences—notably quantification and measurement—was …

Prediction Of Neighbor-Dependent Microbial Interactions From Limited Population Data, Joon-Yong Lee, Shin Haruta, Souichiro Kato, Hans C. Bernstein, Stephen R. Lindemann, Dong-Yup Lee, Jim K. Fredrickson, Hyun-Seob Song

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Modulation of interspecies interactions by the presence of neighbor species is a key ecological factor that governs dynamics and function of microbial communities, yet the development of theoretical frameworks explicit for understanding context-dependent interactions are still nascent. In a recent study, we proposed a novel rule-based inference method termed the Minimal Interspecies Interaction Adjustment (MIIA) that predicts the reorganization of interaction networks in response to the addition of new species such that the modulation in interaction coefficients caused by additional members is minimal. While the theoretical basis of MIIA was established through the previous work by assuming the full availability …

Interrelationships Between Water Use Efficiency And Light Use Efficiency In Four Row Crop Canopies, Meetpal S. Kukal, Suat Irmak Dr.

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Quantitative evidence of light use efficiency (LUE) controls on water use effi- ciency (WUE) is lacking, especially comparatively across row crops. Field research experiments (2016–2018) were set up for maize (Zea mays L.), soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), under optimal growth conditions in dry sub-humid conditions. Overall, LUE was able to explain 52% of variance in WUE, and were related as WUE = 1.73 LUE, although crop-specific variation was observed. High- est sensitivity of WUE to changes in LUE was found in sorghum, followed by soybean, winter wheat, and …

This paper provides the first review and illustration of technology-use strategies for supporting student learning in different integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning environments. An integrated STEM learning environment may focus on integrating and learning science and mathematics or integrating and learning engineering and technology simultaneously for multiple levels of learners. An integrated STEM learning environment breaks down disciplinary boundaries and allows students to apply multidisciplinary knowledge in solving problems. This study illustrates four technology-use strategies to support student learning in an integrated STEM learning environment: a) providing authentic learning contexts, b) offering web-based inquiry environments, c) expanding …

Design Principles For Signal Detection In Modern Job Application Systems: Identifying Fabricated Qualifications, Nathan W. Twyman, Steven J. Pentland, Lee Spitzley Jan 2020

Design Principles For Signal Detection In Modern Job Application Systems: Identifying Fabricated Qualifications, Nathan W. Twyman, Steven J. Pentland, Lee Spitzley

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hiring a new employee is traditionally thought to be an uncertain investment. This uncertainty is lessened by the presence of signals that indicate job fitness. Ideally, job applicants objectively signal their qualifications, and those signals are correctly assessed by the hiring team. In reality, signal manipulation is pervasive in the hiring process, mitigating the reliability of signals used to make hiring decisions. To combat these inefficiencies, we propose and evaluate SIGHT, a theoretical class of systems affording more robust signal evaluation during the job application process. A prototypical implementation of the SIGHT framework was evaluated using a mock-interview paradigm. Results …

Fertility, Belief, And Sexuality, Madison F. Von Deylen, Kaylynne M. Glover, Vincent M. Cassone Jan 2020

Fertility, Belief, And Sexuality, Madison F. Von Deylen, Kaylynne M. Glover, Vincent M. Cassone

Posters-at-the-Capitol Presentations

The human ovulatory cycle lasts an average of 28 days and is highly variable both within and among women, making ovulation and the fertile window difficult to estimate in humans. Commonly used methods for estimating fertility assume length consistency during various cycle phases, an assumption that often miscategorizes women as fertile when not and vice versa. This experiment analyzes several of the common methods used to estimate fertility, including forwards and backwards-counting methods and actuarial methods, and compares them against hormonal testing to determine the most accurate method for fertility identification. Additionally, we used hormonal ovulation tests combined with daily …

Salvadoran Women's Migration To The United States: Lessons Of Challenge And Hope For The Church, Michael Ramos Jan 2020

Salvadoran Women's Migration To The United States: Lessons Of Challenge And Hope For The Church, Michael Ramos

Doctor of Ministry Doctoral Projects

In this study, the researcher investigated the migration experience and resettlement of five Salvadoran women who sought refuge in the United States. Unlike refugees who have been placed after a vetting process, through an international placement program and the United States State Department, Salvadorans have often fled to the United States, with or without U.S. federal authorization. Often they have applied for asylum after arriving in the United States. This leaves many Salvadorans (1) separated from family members and loved ones, (2) facing possible economic hardship, and (3) vulnerable to detention and deportation. Yet, these immigrants have demonstrated—if we go …

A Study Of Bullying In The Catholic Healthcare Workplace, Luann Mary Trutwin

Doctor of Ministry Doctoral Projects

This phenomenological qualitative study explored the impact and understanding of bullying in Catholic, mission-driven healthcare facilities, specifically how leaders respond to and manage bullying in their workplaces. The research is intended to make a positive contribution to Catholic healthcare communities by providing healthcare providers, educators, and policy makers information and tools to prevent and manage bullying in the workplace. The study employed Catholic social teaching and a Benedictine based theological reflection model to guide the two main areas of exploration: leaders’ experiences of hearing complaints about bullying and tools available to them to stop bullying. An anonymous survey was sent …

Time Spent Exercising And Obesity: An Application Of Lewbel’S Instrumental Variables Method, Charles J. Courtemanche, Joshua C. Pinkston, Jay Stewart Jan 2020

Time Spent Exercising And Obesity: An Application Of Lewbel’S Instrumental Variables Method, Charles J. Courtemanche, Joshua C. Pinkston, Jay Stewart

Institute for the Study of Free Enterprise Working Papers

This paper examines the role physical activity plays in determining body mass using data from the American Time Use Survey. Our work is the first to address the measurement error that arises when time use during a single day—rather than average daily time use over an extended period—is used as an explanatory variable. We show that failing to account for day-to-day variation in activities results in the effects of time use on a typical day being understated. Furthermore, we account for the possibility that physical activity and body mass are jointly determined by implementing Lewbel’s instrumental variables estimator that exploits …

Developing A Watershed-Scale Baseline For Tidal Wetlands, Nicholas A. Procopio, Robert Hazen, Michael P. Weinstein, Meiyin Wu, Danlin Yu Jan 2020

Developing A Watershed-Scale Baseline For Tidal Wetlands, Nicholas A. Procopio, Robert Hazen, Michael P. Weinstein, Meiyin Wu, Danlin Yu

New Jersey Center for Water Science & Technology Reports

Tidal wetlands are critical habitat for the maintenance of secondary production of nekton. This study addresses two key factors: the specific structural and functional traits of coastal wetlands that make them conducive to supporting the secondary production of nekton and how individual components of the marsh are inter-connected to form a functional whole. Structural characteristics of relatively undisturbed tidal wetlands have been determined by meta-analysis from more than 500 papers and in-situ measurements and remote sensing of New Jersey wetland sites. Meta-analysis (Hedges’ d values and 95% confidence intervals) has shown that restored sites compare favorably with undisturbed sites in …

Dementia is a group of irreversible, chronic, and progressive neurodegenerative disorders resulting in impaired memory, communication, and thought processes. In recent years, clinical research advances in brain aging have focused on the earliest clinically detectable stage of incipient dementia, commonly known as mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Currently, these disorders are diagnosed using a manual analysis of neuropsychological examinations. We measure the feasibility of using the linguistic characteristics of verbal utterances elicited during neuropsychological exams of elderly subjects to distinguish between elderly control groups, people with MCI, people diagnosed with possible Alzheimer's disease (AD), and probable AD. We investigated the performance …
