Global Phylogeography Suggests Extensive Eucosmopolitanism In Mesopelagic Fishes (Maurolicus: Sternoptychidae), D. J. Reese, Jan Y. Poulsen, Tracey Sutton, Paulo A. S. Cost, Mauricio F. Landaeta

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Fishes in the mesopelagic zone (200–1000 m) have recently been highlighted for potential exploitation. Here we assess global phylogeography in Maurolicus, the Pearlsides, an ecologically important group. We obtained new sequences from mitochondrial COI and nuclear ITS-2 from multiple locations worldwide, representing 10 described species plus an unknown central South Pacific taxon. Phylogenetic analyses identified five geographically distinct groupings, three of which comprise multiple described species. Species delimitation analyses suggest these may represent four species. Maurolicus muelleri and M. australis are potentially a single species, although as no shared haplotypes are found between the two disjunct groups, we suggest …

Public Health Sciences Articles

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a group of aromatic or chlorinated organic chemicals commonly found in manufactured products that have high vapor pressure, and thus vaporize readily at room temperature. While airshed VOCs are well studied and have provided insights into public health issues, we suggest that belowground VOCs and the related vapor intrusion process could be equally or even more relevant to public health. The persistence, movement, remediation, and human health implications of subsurface VOCs in urban landscapes remain relatively understudied despite evidence of widespread contamination. This review explores the state of the science of subsurface movement and remediation …

Public Health Sciences Articles

Tumor mutational burden (TMB) is associated with clinical response to immunotherapy, but application has been limited to a subset of cancer patients. We hypothesized that advanced machine-learning and proper modeling could identify mutations that classify patients most likely to derive clinical benefits. Training data: Two sets of public whole-exome sequencing (WES) data for metastatic melanoma. Validation data: One set of public non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) data. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) machine-learning and proper modeling were used to identify a set of mutations (biomarker) with maximum predictive accuracy (measured by AUROC). Kaplan-Meier and log-rank methods were used …

A Topological Analysis Of Gene Co-Expression Networks From Brain Data, Mary Lee Nov 2020

A Topological Analysis Of Gene Co-Expression Networks From Brain Data, Mary Lee

Honors Theses

Gene expression data is a compilation of gene activity expressed in a certain tissue. This data has the potential to help uncover genes associated with some disease, stimulus, and treatment. The Allen Brain Atlas has made available gene expression data describing the activity of genes in individuals and tissues related to aging, dementia, traumatic brain injury, brain cancer, and many other brain-specific conditions. This project uses statistical and information-theoretic metrics like Pearson correlation and mutual information to build gene co-expression networks, which are represented by nodes on a graph that correspond to a gene. The nodes are connected when they …

Hemp Fiber – An Environmentally Friendly Fiber For Concrete Reinforcement, Brian Giltner Nov 2020

Hemp Fiber – An Environmentally Friendly Fiber For Concrete Reinforcement, Brian Giltner

Theses and Dissertations

The commercial use of hemp fiber in the construction industry within the United States is non-existent. This lack of use is because of State and Federal laws forbidding the growth of hemp in the United States, which has led to a lack of research. Not having an established supply chain for hemp and coupled with limited research has put the United States behind other countries in finding viable options for these renewable resources. This is a study of the performance of raw hemp fibers and processed hemp twine in a cement past mixture subjected to tensile loading. Three water/cement ratios …

Thermographic, Behavioral, And Histological Inflammatory Analysis Of A Subconcussive, Closed-Head, Blunt Impact Rodent Model, Sonja Anne Virkus Nov 2020

Thermographic, Behavioral, And Histological Inflammatory Analysis Of A Subconcussive, Closed-Head, Blunt Impact Rodent Model, Sonja Anne Virkus

Theses and Dissertations

Subconcussive impacts have become a growing concern particularly with respect to contact sports. It is believed that minimal head impacts can cause cerebral perturbations that initiate an immune response creating a window of vulnerability. Evidence suggests that additional head insults sustained during this window of vulnerability elicit an exaggerated inflammatory response and exacerbate cognitive deficits. Therefore, determining the lower limits of systematic perturbation resulting from low-level impacts is of critical importance in expanding our understanding of cerebral vulnerability and recovery. However, the vast majority of experimental investigations of subconcussion fail to model single impact events and instead focus on cumulative …

Effects Of Noise Exposure On The Vestibular System: A Systematic Review, Courtney Elaine Stewart, Avril Genene Holt, Richard A. Altschuler, Anthony Thomas Cacace, Courtney D. Hall, Owen D. Murnane, W. Michael King, Faith W. Akin

ETSU Faculty Works

Despite our understanding of the impact of noise-induced damage to the auditory system, much less is known about the impact of noise exposure on the vestibular system. In this article, we review the anatomical, physiological, and functional evidence for noise-induced damage to peripheral and central vestibular structures. Morphological studies in several animal models have demonstrated cellular damage throughout the peripheral vestibular system and particularly in the otolith organs; however, there is a paucity of data on the effect of noise exposure on human vestibular end organs. Physiological studies have corroborated morphological studies by demonstrating disruption across vestibular pathways with otolith-mediated …

Movements And Space-Use Of Female Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) During Nesting And Breeding Seasons, Drew W. Retherford Nov 2020

Movements And Space-Use Of Female Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) During Nesting And Breeding Seasons, Drew W. Retherford

Theses and Dissertations

Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) are a species of conservation concern throughout their range including the state of Idaho. Little is known about the size of areas used by female sage-grouse during the breeding and nesting seasons, fidelity of females to those areas, or fidelity of female sage-grouse to specific leks or nest sites. The recent miniaturization of global positioning system (GPS) transmitting devices allows for a more thorough analysis of this behavior. We placed GPS transmitters on 234 female sage-grouse in Idaho, USA, from 2015 to 2019. We monitored 145 nest attempts, 15 of which occurred in consecutive years, from …

Expediting Rare Disease Diagnosis: A Call To Bridge The Gap Between Clinical And Functional Genomics., Samantha N. Hartin, John C. Means, Joseph Alaimo, Scott T. Younger Nov 2020

Expediting Rare Disease Diagnosis: A Call To Bridge The Gap Between Clinical And Functional Genomics., Samantha N. Hartin, John C. Means, Joseph Alaimo, Scott T. Younger

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Approximately 400 million people throughout the world suffer from a rare disease. Although advances in whole exome and whole genome sequencing have greatly facilitated rare disease diagnosis, overall diagnostic rates remain below 50%. Furthermore, in cases where accurate diagnosis is achieved the process requires an average of 4.8 years. Reducing the time required for disease diagnosis is among the most critical needs of patients impacted by a rare disease. In this perspective we describe current challenges associated with rare disease diagnosis and discuss several cutting-edge functional genomic screening technologies that have the potential to rapidly accelerate the process of distinguishing …

A Longitudinal Descriptive Study On The Sleep Of Young Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Emily E. Grubbs Nov 2020

A Longitudinal Descriptive Study On The Sleep Of Young Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Emily E. Grubbs

Theses and Dissertations

Sleep is vital for optimal physical and mental health, as well as cognitive and social functioning. Young adults with developmental disabilities (DD) are at greater risk for physical and mental health disorders and experience limitations in cognitive and social functioning in ways that can prevent participation in meaningful activities associated with young adulthood. Sleep literature has reflected that persons with DD experience worse sleep than persons without DD. Suboptimal sleep could compromise functionality and thus participation in young adulthood activities. Not much is known however of the nature of sleep problems experienced by young adults with DD. This study is …

Development Of The Pet-Related Events And Tasks Scale (Pets), Courtney Bolstad Nov 2020

Development Of The Pet-Related Events And Tasks Scale (Pets), Courtney Bolstad

Theses and Dissertations

Depression is a common, debilitating disorder that is often treated using behavioral activation (BA), which includes identification and scheduling of pleasant activities. Owning a pet appears to be a viable source of pleasant activities, though current BA tools do not extensively consider these activities. The present study aimed to develop the Pet-Related Events and Tasks Scale (PETS) to determine what activities of pet ownership are pleasant and may be used in BA. Various methods were used to generate items (i.e., focus groups, surveys, and adaptation of existing event schedule items) and revise the developing PETS (i.e., cognitive interviews and expert …

Comprehensive Survey Of Butterflies At The Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, Jordan Gesell

Theses and Dissertations

In collaboration with the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, I collected detailed information on the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea Latreille, 1802) of the refuge. I produced a comprehensive checklist of butterflies and skippers numbering 60 species. In addition, I collected data on flight periods as well as local plant community associations. Butterfly abundance surveys were conducted to assess seasonal habitat use across six site classes. Special emphasis was placed on pine forest at various stages of management for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis). An exploratory analysis of butterfly diversity and abundance was conducted using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). …

Cognition In Health And Disease: Two Mouse Model Studies, Heather Lynn Mahoney Nov 2020

Cognition In Health And Disease: Two Mouse Model Studies, Heather Lynn Mahoney

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive and circadian dysfunction are common aspects of neuropsychiatric disease that are often overlooked in disease models and treatment strategies. In this work, we first evaluated the potential for cognitive enhancement in healthy adult mice by targeting a kinase involved in regulation of the molecular circadian clock. We then developed and characterized a model of neuropsychiatric disease that could present a target for rescuing circadian and cognitive deficits using this treatment.

Time-of-day effects have been noted in a wide variety of cognitive behavioral tests, and perturbation of circadian rhythms impairs hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. We first asked whether casein kinase …

Agronomic, Economic, And Ecological Response Of Corn And Soybean Production Systems To Winter Cover Cropping And Minimum Tillage Management In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Thomas Beauregard Badon Nov 2020

Agronomic, Economic, And Ecological Response Of Corn And Soybean Production Systems To Winter Cover Cropping And Minimum Tillage Management In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Thomas Beauregard Badon

Theses and Dissertations

Winter fallow corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production systems are susceptible to erosion and agrochemical transport. This research determined the effects of Cover Crop Minimum Tillage (CCMT) on erosion and agrochemical transport from corn-soybean rotations at field scale, while assessing impacts to agroeconomics and irrigation in Mississippi’s Delta Region. CCMT did not affect total suspended solids (p = 0.53), total inorganic phosphorus (TIP) (p = 0.30), or total nitrogen (TN) (p = 0.25) loads, but did reduce TIP (p = 0.018), TN (p = 0.011), and nitrate-nitrite (p = 0.007) concentrations. An economic loss of …

Super-Resolution Microscopy Development For The Detection Of Nano-Structures And Confocal Study Of The Structural Damage In Gut Cell Nuclei Due To Total Body Irradiation, Mehedi Hasan

Theses and Dissertations

Optical microscopy is the oldest form of microscopy that has been visually aiding scientific research. In our research, I have reported here two such optical microscopy techniques for two different projects. In the first project, we re-developed an instrumentation of a cost-effective, high-performing, single-molecular localization super-resolution microscopy setup that breaks the diffraction limitation barrier. Then we use a stochastic image capturing technique to capture the best precision image positions of gold nanoparticles. In our second project, we apply confocal microscopy technique to image DNA molecular nanoscale structural alterations of chromatin in cell nuclei of gut tissues caused by total body …

Computational Chemistry Investigation Of Gas-Phase Structures, Infrared Spectroscopy, And Dissociation Pathways Of Isomeric Molecules, Widana Kaushalya Nov 2020

Computational Chemistry Investigation Of Gas-Phase Structures, Infrared Spectroscopy, And Dissociation Pathways Of Isomeric Molecules, Widana Kaushalya

Theses and Dissertations

While chemical isomers typically have distinct properties, differentiating between them is often an analytical challenge, especially for mass spectrometric methods. Infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) can be useful in analysis of such isomeric compounds; however, experimental results alone do not directly provide in-depth structural information. In this thesis, computational chemistry is first used to explain experimental results and understand the conformational preference of the gas phase ions formed from the lithiation of cis-3, cis-4 and trans-4 hydroxyproline isomers and then used in a predictive manner to evaluate IRMPD spectroscopy and IMS as potential paths …
