Effects Of Physiological Arousal On Speech Motor Control And Speech Motor Practice In Preschool-Age Children Who Do And Do Not Stutter, Victoria Tumanova, Carly Woods, Qiu Wang
Communication Sciences and Disorders - All Scholarship
Purpose: We examined the effects of physiological arousal on speech motor control and speech motor practice effects in preschool-age children who do (CWS) and do not stutter (CWNS). Method: Participants included 18 CWS (mean age 4 years, 5 months) and 18 age- and gender-matched CWNS. The participants repeated a phrase “buy bobby a puppy” interspersed with viewing pictures from the International Affective Picture System under two experimental conditions speaking after viewing pictures with (1) negative, and (2) neutral valence. Participants’ lip movements were tracked using Optotrak system. The spatio-temporal index (STI; Smith, Goffman, Zelaznik, Ying & McGillem, 1995) and mean …

This Essay was also published online at 67 UCLA L. Rev. Disc. 200 (2020).
Policing in America has always been about controlling the Black body. Indeed, modern policing was birthed and nurtured by white supremacy; its roots are found in slavery. Policing today continues to protect and serve the racial hierarchy blessed by the Constitution itself. But a string of U.S. Supreme Court rulings involving the Thirteenth Amendment offers Congress a tool with which to target institutions that have preserved social, political, and official norms associated with slavery. In those cases, the Supreme Court held that Congress has broad enforcement …

Species Specificity And Cross-Species Transition In Relation To Sars-Cov-2 Spike Proteins, Edrice Sediq
Species Specificity And Cross-Species Transition In Relation To Sars-Cov-2 Spike Proteins, Edrice Sediq
Seton Hall Biochemistry II Annals of Student Reviews
Coronaviruses are known as envelope RNA viruses that are able to infect and manifest disease in various avian and mammalian species. They have the ability to participate in cross-species transmission as seen in the human coronavirus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2002. The most recent emergence of a novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, has entered the world and presents similarities to known human coronaviruses. Mechanisms of viral entry and receptor interactions are key to understanding the process of transmission. Further elaboration will be presented on cross-species transmission and the role of viral proteins in spreading the virus.

We conducted over a decade of research into individual eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis; hemlock) trees that are potentially resistant to hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae; HWA), an invasive xylem-feeding insect that is capable of rapidly killing even mature trees. Following clonal propagation of these individuals, in 2015 we planted size- and age-matched HWA-resistant and HWA-susceptible hemlocks in HWA-infested forest plots in seven states. In 2019, we re-surveyed the plots; 96% of HWA-resistant hemlocks survived compared to 48% of susceptible trees. The surviving HWA-resistant trees were also taller, produced more lateral growth, retained more foliage, and supported lower densities of the …

Ocean acidification (OA) poses a major threat to marine animals, especially marine shelled invertebrates such as molluscs. Although many organisms are capable of compensating for the effects of OA, this can impose physiological costs and impact performance (e.g. through increased metabolism and decreased growth). Sublethal injuries on shells may provoke changes in energy allocation. Under acidified conditions, organisms would spend less energy on reproduction and somatic growth to repair the damage. Therefore, we analysed the physiological responses of the intertidal gastropod Tritia reticulata during shell regeneration under OA conditions. We simulated a sub-lethal predation event (a notch in the outer …

Degradation Of Transcriptional Repressor Atf4 During Long-Term Synaptic Plasticity, Spencer G. Smith, Kathryn A. Haynes, Ashok N. Hegde
Faculty and Staff Works
Maintenance of long-term synaptic plasticity requires gene expression mediated by cAMP-responsive element binding protein (CREB). Gene expression driven by CREB can commence only if the inhibition by a transcriptional repressor activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4; also known as CREB2) is relieved. Previous research showed that the removal of ATF4 occurs through ubiquitin-proteasome-mediated proteolysis. Using chemically induced hippocampal long-term potentiation (cLTP) as a model system, we investigate the mechanisms that control ATF4 degradation. We observed that ATF4 phosphorylated at serine-219 increases upon induction of cLTP and decreases about 30 min thereafter. Proteasome inhibitor β-lactone prevents the decrease in ATF4. We found …

Conserving The Mesoamerican Herpetofauna: The Most Critical Case Of The Priority Level One Endemic Species, Eli García-Padilla, Dominic L. Desantis, Arturo Rocha, Jerry D. Johnson, Vicente Mata-Silva, Larry D. Wilson
Faculty and Staff Works
Of significant biodiversity importance, the Mesoamerican herpetofauna now increases at a rate of approximately 35 species annually. As its size increases, however, the global problem of biodiversity decline continues to worsen with time. Recently, a set of conservation priority levels was established for individual species based on a combination of physiographic distribution and Environmental Vulnerability Score (EVS). The 18 such levels identified range from level one, encompassing species that occupy a single physiographic region and with a high EVS, to level 18, including species that inhabit six physiographic regions and have a low EVS. For the Mesoamerican herpetofauna, the greatest …

Widespread use of Artificial Intelligence in all areas of today’s society creates a unique problem: algorithms used in decision-making are generally not understandable to those without a background in data science. Thus, those who use out-of-the-box Machine Learning (ML) approaches in their work and those affected by these approaches are often not in a position to analyse their outcomes and applicability. Our paper describes and evaluates our undergraduate course at the University of Minnesota Morris, which fosters understanding of the main ideas behind ML. With Communication, Media & Rhetoric and Computer Science faculty expertise, students from a variety of majors, …

Red-Bellied Mudsnake (Farancia Abacura) Home Ranges Increase With Precipitation In An Isolated Wetland, Michael V. Plumer, Caleb S. O'Neal, Steven M. Cooper, Ryan Stork
Student Publications
We radiotracked Red-bellied Mudsnakes (Farancia abacura) from April to October 2018 in a small isolated wetland pond in Central Arkansas, USA. Individual F. abacura were aquatic, fossorial, and moved within small, well-defined home ranges confined to the pond basin of a wetland system. Individual home ranges of radio-tracked F. abacura overlapped extensively. Activity and home range size of F. abacura increased following heavy precipitation in August and September. Use of space by F. abacura in a small isolated wetland pond in central Arkansas was strikingly different from a previous study in an expansive wetland in southeastern Missouri.

© The Author(s) 2020. The volatile oils of fresh and air-dried buds of 3 different varieties of Cannabis, namely, high cannabidiol (CBD) chemotype, intermediate CBD/tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) chemotype, and high THC chemotype were prepared by hydrodistillation. Gas chromatography analysis of the volatile oils resulted in the identification of 71 compounds, of which 33 were monoterpenes and 38 were sesquiterpenes. The volatile oil obtained from the THC chemotype showed an increase in the ratio of the sesquiterpenes to monoterpenes content. The content of terpinolene was dramatically decreased upon drying of THC chemotype. Moderate increase in β-caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide was observed. However, …

This article is an open access article distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). Avocado oil is prized for its high nutritional value due to the substantial amounts of triglycerides (TGs) and unsaturated fatty acids (FAs) present. While avocado oil is traditionally extracted from mature fruit flesh, alternative sources such as avocado seed oil have recently increased in popularity. Unfortunately, sufficient evidence is not available to support the claimed health benefit and safe use of such oils. To address potential quality issues and …

The S1R is involved in the regulation of many neurotransmission systems and, indirectly, in neurodegenerative diseases. The S1R may therefore represent an interesting neuronal biomarker in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's (PD) or Alzheimer's diseases (AD). Here we present the characterisation of the S1R-specific 18F-labelled tracer 18F-IAM6067 in two animal models and in human …

© The Author(s) 2020. Pepper is one of the most popular spices over the world and is called the King of Spices. Its essential oils (EOs) could alleviate neuronal ailments due to the inhibitory effect against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). In this study, the chemical compositions of 26 EOs prepared from white and black pepper collecting from 6 different cultivars were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 133 compounds were identified in the white and black pepper EOs. Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were found to be riched in these EOs, of which α-pinene, β-pinene, sabinene, 3-carene, limonene, and (E)-β-caryophyllene were …
