A Simple And Sensitive Aptamer-Based Electrochmical Sensor For Determination Of Aflatoxin B1, Bing Liu, Yao-Shuai Zhao, Yue Qin, Yi Wang, Yan-Jie Zhu, Shuo Wang Jun 2020

A Simple And Sensitive Aptamer-Based Electrochmical Sensor For Determination Of Aflatoxin B1, Bing Liu, Yao-Shuai Zhao, Yue Qin, Yi Wang, Yan-Jie Zhu, Shuo Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Aflatoxin B1 has attracted much attention because of its high toxicity and carcinogenicity, which has become a great concern in food safety. Based on the principle of specific binding between Aflatoxin B1 and its aptamer, an aptamer-based electrochemical sensor had been designed and developed for the determination of minor Aflatoxin B1 contained in grain. The mesoporous carbons were first modified on the surface of the working electrode, and then the gold nanoparticles were on-site electrodeposited at a constant potential. Each modified electrode was characteritised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). As a result, the surface area …

Antimicrobial Strategies For Topical Applications, Kelsey Marie Lopez Jun 2020

Antimicrobial Strategies For Topical Applications, Kelsey Marie Lopez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bacteria can thrive in diverse environments and are often harmless or beneficial. Bacteria in digestive tracts is one example of beneficial bacteria; however, bacteria can be harmful and when this type proliferates, it can cause infections within hosts. Bacterial infections are easily treated with antibiotics in most cases. However, bacteria are also capable of developing mutations which could cause them to become multi-drug resistant and eventually, “superbugs.” Therefore, the development of novel antimicrobial agents and materials capable of combating drug-resistant bacteria is necessary. Research presented in this dissertation focuses on different strategies for minimizing and preventing topical bacterial infections using …

Incorporating Problem-Based Learning In An Undergraduate Allied Health Prerequisite Anatomy And Physiology Course, Nicholas A. Pullen, Emily Royse, Alexandra Vita

Assessment Mini Grant Reports

Human Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) classes historically have a high Drop-Fail-Withdraw (DFW) rate at institutions around the world. A&P classes at the University of Northern Colorado are no exception, with BIO 246 (Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology) having a 24% DFW rate between 2015-2018 [1]. This class predominantly serves students in nursing and other allied health programs. Physiology topics are known to be challenging for students to learn, due to the difficulty of establishing effective study strategies for broad systems-level content. Our aim was to address these challenges by implementing Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as a part of the BIO 246 …

A Brief Review Of Monolecty In Bees And Benefits Of A Broadened Definition, James H. Cane Jun 2020

A Brief Review Of Monolecty In Bees And Benefits Of A Broadened Definition, James H. Cane

All PIRU Publications

Monolecty in bees was defined a century ago for those species that consistently collect pollen only from the same single species of floral host. Even at the time, the term was considered “a curiosity” with little biological meaning. Here, I review its multiple problems and suggest that its utility would improve if we apply the term monolecty to those bees species that use a single genus (not species) of flowering host.

Viral Membrane Fusion And The Transmembrane Domain, Chelsea T. Barrett, Rebecca Ellis Dutch Jun 2020

Viral Membrane Fusion And The Transmembrane Domain, Chelsea T. Barrett, Rebecca Ellis Dutch

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Initiation of host cell infection by an enveloped virus requires a viral-to-host cell membrane fusion event. This event is mediated by at least one viral transmembrane glycoprotein, termed the fusion protein, which is a key therapeutic target. Viral fusion proteins have been studied for decades, and numerous critical insights into their function have been elucidated. However, the transmembrane region remains one of the most poorly understood facets of these proteins. In the past ten years, the field has made significant advances in understanding the role of the membrane-spanning region of viral fusion proteins. We summarize developments made in the past …

Metal node engineering in combination with modularity, topological diversity, and porosity of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) could advance energy and optoelectronic sectors. In this study, we focus on MOFs with multinuclear heterometallic nodes for establishing metal−property trends, i.e., connecting atomic scale changes with macroscopic material properties by utilization of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, conductivity measurements, X-ray photoelectron and diffuse reflectance spectroscopies, and density functional theory calculations. The results of Bader charge analysis and studies employing the Voronoi–Dirichlet partition of crystal structures are also presented. As an example of frameworks with different nodal arrangements, we have chosen MOFs with mononuclear, …

Sleuths As Social Activists: Negotiations Of Power & Morality In Ya Sleuthing Stories, Heather Leigh Sanford Jun 2020

Sleuths As Social Activists: Negotiations Of Power & Morality In Ya Sleuthing Stories, Heather Leigh Sanford

Theses and Dissertations

In “Sleuths as Social Activists: Negotiations of Power & Morality in YA Sleuthing Stories” I aim to explore how adolescent sleuthing stories intersect with negotiations of power, subjectivity, and relationality within the structures and confines of adolescent literature to challenge oppressive paradigms. This project will begin with a focus on gender dynamics, using ethics of care to compare Wendelin Van Draanen’s girl sleuth Sammy Keyes to Anthony Horowitz’s boy sleuth Alex Rider. This analysis of gender will then expand into an intersectional exploration of how age and race additionally implicate how Sammy Keyes and Alex Rider negotiate power and morality …

Background: Current point-of-care tests (POCT) for syphilis, based on the detection of Treponema pallidum (TP) total antibodies, have limited capacity in distinguishing between active and past/treated syphilis. We report the development and early evaluation of a new prototype POCT based on the detection of TP-IgA antibodies, a novel biomarker for active syphilis.

Methods: The TP-IgA POCT (index test) was developed in response to the World Health Organisation (WHO) target product profile (TPP) for a POCT for confirmatory syphilis testing. Two sub-studies were conducted consecutively using 458 pre-characterised stored plasma samples in China (sub-study one, addressing the criteria for the WHO …

Mechanistic And Translational Studies On Skeletal Malignancies, Jeremy Mcguire

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

New treatment strategies are desperately needed for treating skeletal malignancy. Skeletal malignancies can be either primary cancer that originated in the bone, such as osteosarcoma, or metastatic cancer that spread from another organ to the skeleton, as in the case of breast or prostate cancer. In this thesis, I will detail two projects that focus on the discovery of new treatment strategies for both primary skeletal malignancy and metastatic skeletal malignancy.

The first project focuses on the primary skeletal malignancy, osteosarcoma, a rare cancer that is commonly diagnosed in children and young adults and metastasizes to the lungs. The survival …

Investigating The Reversibility Of Protein Adsorption On Gold Nanoparticles And The Role Of Free Thiol, Awosiji Olatunde Awotunde

Theses and Dissertations

Protein-gold nanoparticle (AuNP) bioconjugates have many potential applications in nanomedicine. A thorough understanding of the interaction between the protein and AuNP is critical to engineering these functional bioconjugates with desirable properties. In this work, we investigate the role of free thiols presented by the protein on the stability of the protein-AuNP conjugate. Human serum albumin (HSA) was modified with 2-iminothiolane (Traut’s reagent) to introduce additional thiols on the protein surface, and three variants of HSA were synthesized to present 1, 5, and 20 free thiols by controlling the molar excess of the chemical modifier. Protein exchange studies on AuNPs were …

Log File-Based Dose Reconstruction To Moving Targets During Lung Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, Andrew S. Mcguffey Jun 2020

Log File-Based Dose Reconstruction To Moving Targets During Lung Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, Andrew S. Mcguffey

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: To perform film-based verification of 4D dose reconstruction to moving targets during lung stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT).

Introduction: Current patient-specific quality assurance measures to test deliverability of plans with dynamic intensity modulation involve delivering beams to static measurement device and comparing the planned dose to measurement. However, motion-induced dose errors are not detected with static measurement. Previous studies have investigated combining machine log data with respiratory tracking to determine moving-target dose. By combining machine log data with anatomic and density information at each breathing phase from 4D-CT, intrafraction anatomical deformation due to respiration may be accounted for. However, …

Translational Neuroscience

© 2020 The Author(s). The choroid plexus (CP) is a highly vascularized structure located in the ventricles that forms the blood-CSF barrier (BCSFB) and separates the blood from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In addition to its role as a physical barrier, the CP functions in CSF secretion, transport of nutrients into the central nervous system (CNS) and a gated point of entry of circulating immune cells into the CNS. Aging and neurodegeneration have been reported to affect CP morphology and function and increase protein leakage from blood to the CSF. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with …

Chitosan (CS) is a naturalcationic polysaccharide obtained by deacetylation of chitin, a biopolymer found mainly in the exoskeleton of crab, shrimp shells, etc. The chitosan degree of deacetylation (DD) is an important factor which determines some of the physiochemical and biological properties of chitosan. The present study focuses on evaluating the effect of chitosan DD on nanoparticle size by using three different DD of chitosan, i.e., 85%, 90% and 93%. Chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by ionic gelation method using sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) as crosslinker. The particle size and polydispersity index (PDI) was studied using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and was …

Compensatory Recruitment, Dynamic Habitat, And Selective Gear Present Challenges To Large-Scale Invasive Species Control, Timothy E. Walsworth, Kevin Landom, Jereme Gaeta

Ecology Center Publications

Control of long‐established invasive species to aid threatened native species presents major logistic and economic challenges. Invasive common carp (Cyprinus carpio ) recently accounted for over 90% of the fish biomass in Utah Lake (Utah, USA), driving many undesired changes to ecosystem structure. Carp control efforts have removed >12,000 tons of carp from the system over 10 yr. However, the impact of recent removal efforts on carp population structure and dynamics remains unclear. We develop an integrated age‐structured population model incorporating carp harvest data with independent standardized monitoring data to evaluate population‐level consequences of the removal effort and evaluate …

Synthesizing Modified Polymeric Nanoparticles For Biofilm Inhibition, Antibiotic Encapsulation, And Specific Targeting Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Logan Schnorbus

Theses and Dissertations

Widespread usage of antibiotics is a growing concern due to antibiotic resistance development in bacteria. This is due to common use of antibiotics in agricultural, livestock, and clinical usage. Antibiotic resistance is developing at a rate in which it is outpacing new drugs on the market. New strategies in drug development are necessary to combat the increasing resistance. We designed several motifs of sugar-modified nanoparticles to inhibit the biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

P. aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogenic bacterium that is responsible for common life-threatening infection in hospitals. This gram-negative opportunistic pathogenic bacterium infects hosts with compromised immune systems …

Subsequent Spelling Cavolinii For Scarabaeus Cavolini Petagna, 1792 (Currently Copris Hispanus Cavolinii) To Be Maintained As Prevailing Usage (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Scarabaeidae: Coprini), Stefano Ziani Jun 2020

Subsequent Spelling Cavolinii For Scarabaeus Cavolini Petagna, 1792 (Currently Copris Hispanus Cavolinii) To Be Maintained As Prevailing Usage (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea: Scarabaeidae: Coprini), Stefano Ziani

Insecta Mundi

The specific name in Scarabaeus cavolinii Petagna, 1792 (currently Copris hispanus ssp. cavolinii) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Coprini) is an incorrect subsequent spelling—the original spelling is cavolini—but, because of its prevailing usage here documented, is to be preserved.

In 1792, Petagna described Scarabaeus cavolini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) as a tribute to the famous Italian biologist Filippo Cavolini (1756–1810), whose Latinized name was Philippus Cavolinus (Petagna 1785; Smith 1804). To dedicate the new species to him, Petagna (1792) declined the name to the genitive singular case of the second Latin declension, which is Cavolini.

The original spelling “cavolini” was …

“Saved To Citizenship”: The Rhetoric Of Delinquency And Industriousness In The New York Catholic Protectory, 1902-1911, Lucas Joshua Hann

Theses - ALL

In recent years, rhetorical scholars have been increasingly interested in questions of borders and citizenship. Scholars such as J. David Cisneros, Karma Chávez, Lisa Flores, and D. Robert DeChaine have tended to contemporary struggles at the southern U.S. border, while others, such as Jeffrey Bennett and Robert Asen, have articulated theories of citizenship that are tied to notions of belonging. To complement this ongoing work in the field, there is a need for additional historic work that seeks to understand the underpinnings of contemporary debates. In this thesis, I argue that the New York Catholic Protectory, in its mission to …
