Downregulation of BST-2/tetherin and CD4 by HIV-1 viral protein U (Vpu) promotes viral egress and allows infected cells to evade host immunity. Little is known however about the natural variability in these Vpu functions among the genetically diverse viral subtypes that contribute to the HIV-1 pandemic. We collected Vpu isolates from 332 treatment-naive individuals living with chronic HIV-1 infection in Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, and Canada. Together, these Vpu isolates represent four major HIV-1 group M subtypes (A [n = 63], B [n = 84], C [n = 94], and D [n = 59]) plus intersubtype …

Effects Of Inter-Male Status Challenge And Psychopathic Traits On Sexual Aggression, Amy M. Hoffmann
Effects Of Inter-Male Status Challenge And Psychopathic Traits On Sexual Aggression, Amy M. Hoffmann
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sexual aggression (SA) is a serious social problem that has been linked to a variety of negative physical and mental health outcomes for survivors and produces significant monetary costs to society. In the past five decades, a wealth of research has improved our understanding of the individual and sociocultural factors that contribute to SA perpetration; however, epistemological differences in theoretical approaches to the subject (i.e., evolutionary, feminist) have resulted in gaps in the empirical literature. Informed by both feminist and evolutionary perspectives, this study attempts to examine the ways in which same-gender interpersonal interactions and individual psychopathology interact to produce …
The Meaning Of Red And Green In User Interfaces For The Color Deficient, Bassel Hamieh
The Meaning Of Red And Green In User Interfaces For The Color Deficient, Bassel Hamieh
University Honors Theses
Around 108 million web users are color blind which is a problem when the way we communicate over the web or interfaces is through the use of color. Red and green are two colors that are especially heavily used in interface design because of their strong symbolic associations; red being a sign to warn or stop and green being the opposite. This has a large effect on red-green color blind people who are not able to perceive either of those colors correctly. Many solutions exist that aim to help through color differentiation but none take into account color symbolism. With …

Bioavailability And Modes Of Action Of Novel Metal Based Phenanthroline Drugs, Tadhg O’Leary
Doctoral
Metal-basedcompounds have been utilised as chemotherapeutic agents for the last four decades due to their well-documented and clinically relevant anti-tumour properties.Acquired resistance is a challenge for the clinical use of these compounds and there is a continuing need to search for potential new therapeutic agents. Herein, the potential of two metal-basedcompounds containing chelated1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-Phen), one manganese-based (CMPD 73)andonecopper-based (CMPD 74), to act as novel therapeutic agents is explored.CMPD 73 displayed high micromolar (IC50>100μM) cytotoxic properties againstvarious cell systems but interestingly displayed increased cytotoxicity against ovarian (A2780), lung (A549) and cisplatin resistant mesothelioma cells(IC5040-50μM). CMPD 74 was equally cytotoxic against …

Secure The Smartphone, Secure The Future: Biometrics, Boyd, A Warrant Denial And The Fourth And Fifth Amendments, Aaron Chase
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
The growing use of biometric technology—fingerprints, facial recognition and beyond—for data safekeeping—particularly for smart phones, personal computers, and identification—has raised a number of questions for Constitutional scholars. What Constitutional protections, if any, does biometric information have? Does biometric information require a warrant for law enforcement officers to compel its production? Would compelling production of a biometric password effectively force defendants to testify against themselves? Should the growing use of biometric information, by both private third parties and law enforcement, lead courts to reexamine prior precedents regarding privacy interests in personal technology and personal physical characteristics? This paper examines turns to …
The Case For A Federal Statute Authorizing Compensation For Legally Imposed Segregation, Thomas B. Stoel Jr.
The Case For A Federal Statute Authorizing Compensation For Legally Imposed Segregation, Thomas B. Stoel Jr.
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
This article, “The Case for a Federal Statute Authorizing Compensation for Legally Imposed Segregation,” proposes enactment of a law to provide reparations to the African Americans who suffered economic, physical, and psychological harm because they were victims of legally imposed racial segregation.
In 1973, Yale Law School Professor Boris Bittker published The Case for Black Reparations, a perceptive, legally rigorous analysis of the issue. Bittker concluded that a focus on reparations for slavery was likely to prove unproductive, and concentrated instead on the prospect for achieving broad- scale reparations for legally imposed segregation. Bittker reached no definitive conclusions; he ended …

Habitat availability can affect important life-history traits such as survival; however, little information exists on how microhabitat characteristics found at parturition sites selected by dams and bed sites selected by their offspring differ fromthe surrounding area and from each other. Therefore, we assessed how vegetation affected maternal parturition and offspring bed site selection for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the Northern Great Plains. Dams selected for sites with decreased vegetation height, potentially improving their visibility, which may increase their ability to escape approaching predators. Conversely, there was no variation between vegetative characteristics at neonate bed sites and their associated random …
Optimal Allocation Of Two Resources In Annual Plants, David Mcmorris
Optimal Allocation Of Two Resources In Annual Plants, David Mcmorris
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The fitness of an annual plant can be thought of as how much fruit is produced by the end of its growing season. Under the assumption that annual plants grow to maximize fitness, we can use techniques from optimal control theory to understand this process. We introduce two models for resource allocation in annual plants which extend classical work by Iwasa and Roughgarden to a case where both carbohydrates and mineral nutrients are allocated to shoots, roots, and fruits in annual plants. In each case, we use optimal control theory to determine the optimal resource allocation strategy for the plant …

A Spatially Distributed Investigation Of Stream Water Temperature In A Contemporary Mixed-Land-Use Watershed, Jason P. Horne, Jason A. Hubbart
A Spatially Distributed Investigation Of Stream Water Temperature In A Contemporary Mixed-Land-Use Watershed, Jason P. Horne, Jason A. Hubbart
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Stream water temperature (◦C) is an important physical variable that influences many biological and abiotic water quality processes. The intermingled mosaic of land-use/land-cover (LULC) types and corresponding variability in stream water temperature (Tw) processes in contemporary mixed-land-use watersheds necessitate research to advance management and policy decisions. Water temperature was analyzed from 21 gauging sites using a nested-scale experimental watershed study design. Results showed that forested land use was negatively correlated (α = 0.05) with mean and maximum Tw. Agricultural land use was significantly positively correlated (α = 0.05) with maximum Tw except during the spring season. Mixed development and Tw …

Habit reversal training (HRT) has been a mainstay of behavior analysts' repertoire for nearly the last 50 years. HRT has been effective in treating a host of repetitive behavior problems. In the face of the current coronavirus pandemic, HRT has practical public health importance as a possible intervention for reducing hand-to-head behaviors that increase the risk of viral infection. The current paper provides a brief review of HRT for hand-to-head habits that is designed for a broad audience and concludes with practical suggestions, based on HRT, for reducing face-touching behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are aggressive soft tissue sarcomas with high metastatic rates and poor overall patient survival. There are currently no effective therapies, underscoring the pressing need to define the molecular etiologies that underlie MPNST progression. The aim of this study was to examine clonal progression and identify the molecular events critical for MPNST spread.
METHODS: In two patients with temporally and spatially distinct metastatic lesions, we employed whole exome sequencing (WES) to elucidate the genetic events of clonal progression, thus identifying the molecular events critical for MPNST spread.
RESULTS: First, we demonstrated shared clonal origins …

Gene Regulation Controlled By The Crbs/R Two-Component System, Alexzandra Sales
Gene Regulation Controlled By The Crbs/R Two-Component System, Alexzandra Sales
All NMU Master's Theses
One way in which bacteria are able to sense and respond to environmental changes is through two-component systems (TCSs). TCSs are composed of a membrane bound sensor protein that can pick up an environmental cue that then activates a cytoplasmic response regulator. The response regulator can, in turn, bind DNA and either activate or repress transcription of specific genes. One such TCS is the CrbS/R system, which is conserved among γ-Proteobacteria. This TCS has been shown to control the acsA gene, which is involved in acetate metabolism, however, other genes potentially under this TCSs’ control are unknown. The aim of …
The Consequences Of Non-Native Species Invasions On The Contemporary And Historic Trophic Ecology Of Native Sport Fish In A Lake Michigan Embayment, John Whitinger
All NMU Master's Theses
The widespread establishment of dreissenid mussels (Dreissena spp.) in Lake Michigan has strongly altered energy flow by sequestering nutrients in nearshore benthic habitats. Despite these ecosystem changes, little is known about their influence on resource partitioning in nearshore fish communities. Here we use stable isotope analysis to characterize the contemporary fish community and historic walleye (Sander vitreus) population of Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc. We found species-specific differences in the δ15N and δ13C values for 14 fish species. High degrees of niche overlap between walleye, northern pike (Esox lucius), …

Birds that nest on the ground in open areas, such as Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) and Interior Least Terns (Sternula antillarum athalassos), are exposed to high temperatures in thermally stressful environments. As a result, some ground-nesting avian species have adapted behavioral strategies to maintain thermal regulation of eggs and themselves. We assessed the impact of sand temperature on shorebird nesting behaviors by installing video cameras and thermocouples at 52 Least Tern and 55 Piping Plover nests on the Missouri River in North Dakota during the 2014–2015 breeding seasons. Daily duration and frequency of shading behaviors exhibited …

The Eastern Lau Spreading Center (ELSC), located between 19°20’S and 22°45’S, is a back-arc basin containing active hydrothermal vents, and is characterized by gradients of several geological and chemical variables that follow along a north – south axis. The northern section of the ELSC spreads faster than the southern section resulting in farther distance from the Tofua Arc and vent geology and chemistry more akin to mid-oceanic ridges. In the Southern section, where distance from the arc is less, substrates are more heavily influenced by water resulting in andesitic substrates as opposed to basaltic substrates in the north. There are …
