Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rhodamine derivatives have been widely investigated for their mitochondrial targeting and chemotherapeutic properties that result from their lipophilic cationic structures. In previous research, we have found that conversion of Rhodamine 6G into nanoGUMBOS, i.e., nanomaterials derived from a group of uniform materials based on organic salts (GUMBOS), led to selective chemotherapeutic toxicity for cancer cells over normal cells. Herein, we investigate the chemotherapeutic activity of GUMBOS derived from four different rhodamine derivatives, two bearing an ester group, i.e., Rhodamine 123 (R123) and SNAFR-5, and two bearing a carboxylic acid group, i.e., rhodamine 110 (R110) and rhodamine B (RB). In this …

Alternative, more sustainable and environmentally positive, sources of energy are one of the current global challenges. One approach to achieving more sustainable sources of energy is to use waste from one system as a raw material for energy production, following the circular biosystem philosophy. This study successfully adopted this approach whereby microalgae strains Chlorella emersonii and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were bioprospected and metabolically engineered in simulated wastewater supplemented with glucose to produce neutral lipids. Using a two-step cultivation approach neutral lipid content was enhanced in Chlorella emersonii and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata biomass. Via in-situ transesterification, these neutral lipids were subsequently bioconverted to …

  1. Periphyton communities associated with submerged plant detritus contain interacting autotrophic and heterotrophic microbes, and are sites of extracellular enzymatic activity. The strength and nature of these interactions might be expected to change over time as microbial communities develop on plant litter. Microbial interactions and enzymatic activity can be altered by nutrient availability, suggesting that litter stoichiometry could also affect these phenomena.
  2. We grew wetland plants under ambient and nutrient‐enriched conditions to generate plant litter of differing nutrient content. In two experiments, we investigated: (1) the influence of algal photosynthesis on fungal and bacterial production and the activities of four extracellular …

Isolation And Characterization Of Bacteriophages Infecting Enterobacter Cloacae To Reduce Bloater Defect In Cucumber Fermentations, Samantha Thompson

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Fermented cucumbers are one of the most important fermented vegetables consumed worldwide. During cucumber fermentations, certain undesirable changes may occur. One of such changes is known as bloater defect (hollow cavities in fermented cucumbers), which is primarily caused by gas-producing bacteria including Enterobacter cloacae. Bloater defect lowers product quality and leads to significant economic loss to the pickle industry, and effective preventative methods are needed. Bacteriophages (phages) are highly host-specific bacteria killers. Use of phages to control unwanted bacteria in foods is a promising approach because phages do not change food properties. The goals of this research were to …

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a late-onset neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of motor neurons in the central nervous system, has no known cure to-date. Disease causing mutations in human Fused in Sarcoma (FUS) leads to aggressive and juvenile onset of ALS. FUS is a well-conserved protein across different species, which plays a crucial role in regulating different aspects of RNA metabolism. Targeted misexpression of FUS in Drosophila model recapitulates several interesting phenotypes relevant to ALS including cytoplasmic mislocalization, defects at the neuromuscular junction and motor dysfunction. We screened for the genetic modifiers of human FUS-mediated neurodegenerative phenotype using molecularly …

Multi-component lipid emulsions, rather than soy-oil emulsions, prevent cholestasis by an unknown mechanism. Here, we quantified liver function, bile acid pools, and gut microbial and metabolite profiles in premature parenterally fed pigs given a soy-oil lipid emulsion, Intralipid (IL), a multi component lipid emulsion, SMOFlipid (SMOF), a novel emulsion with a modified fatty-acid composition [experimental emulsion (EXP)], or a control enteral diet (ENT) for 22 days. We assayed serum cholestasis markers, measured total bile acid levels in plasma, liver, and gut contents, and analyzed colonic bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences and metabolomic profiles. Serum cholestasis markers (i.e., bilirubin, bile acids, …

Women And (In)Justice: The Effects Of Employer Implicit Bias And Judicial Discretion On Title Vii Plaintiffs, Kya Rose Coletta Jul 2020

Women And (In)Justice: The Effects Of Employer Implicit Bias And Judicial Discretion On Title Vii Plaintiffs, Kya Rose Coletta

UC Law Business Journal

Current disparate treatment jurisprudence requires a plaintiff to prove that her employer intentionally discriminated based on sex, ignoring the social cognitive view that emphasizes the role of unconscious, unintentional mental processes. Women are unable to reach the top- tiers of the legal profession, like partnership, due to employers’ deeply engrained biases that emerge during assignment distribution and performance evaluations. This Note challenges that dominant approach, arguing that disparate treatment liability should turn on proof of actuation rather than evidence of intentionality. This Note presents a prescriptive discussion of how employers can implement compliance measures to prevent implicit bias in decision-making …

Federal Right To Try Act: Heightened Informed Consent And Price Regulation Measures Will Improve Quality, Autonomy, And Exploitation Issues, Brenda Lin

UC Law Business Journal

This Note will examine the federal Right to Try Act, which was enacted on May 30, 2018. The federal statute followed the passage of Right to Try legislation in thirty-eight states, including California. Much controversy has surrounded “Right to Try” as an alternative to preexisting pathways to investigational drug treatments, such as traditional clinical trials and the FDA-regulated Expanded Access program, also commonly known as “Compassionate Use.”

This Note will examine those criticisms, evaluate the federal Right to Try Act, and propose amendments through the lenses of health care quality, patient autonomy, and long-term scientific innovation. Some controversy stems from …

Clinical And Therapeutic Implications Of Sex Steroid Hormone Receptor Status In Urothelial Bladder Cancer, H. Krishna Moorthy, G. G.Laxman Prabhu, P. Venugopal

Open Access archive

Studies on the clinical profile of urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) have shown significant gender differences, namely, higher occurrence in males (male-to-female ratio of 3.5:1) and an advanced stage of disease at the time of diagnosis with rapid progression of the disease after initial diagnosis seen more commonly in females. The relationship between gender and UBC is complex and probably influenced by biological and epidemiological factors. Potential contributory factors such as sex steroid hormone pathway, gender difference in environmental carcinogen exposure, metabolic enzyme activity, and disparities in the intensity of diagnostic evaluation could probably explain the demographic trends in UBC. This …
