Western North American Naturalist
Wiregrass (Ventenata dubia [Leers] Coss.), an annual grass from the Mediterranean region of North Africa and Eurasia that has aggressive invasion potential in many North American plant communities, has only recently been reported in low-elevation sagebrush steppe. We first encountered wiregrass in 2014 in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, a low-elevation steppe protected area in central Oregon. This discovery was incidental to formal vegetation monitoring that was initiated in the monument in 2009. We first encountered wiregrass in monitoring plots in 2016, and, from plot data, we documented rapid spread during 2017–2019. Wiregrass infestation increased within our …

The observed movements of humans and animals are realizations of complex spatiotemporal processes. Recent advances in location-aware technologies have rendered trajectory data ubiquitous. Examining the sequenced, instantaneous locations found in movement trajectory data for information reconstructing the location or state of the mover between observed points comprises a primary focus in Time Geography and related disciplines. The PySTPrism toolbox introduced in this paper provides a straightforward and open-source implementation of the Probabilistic Space Time Prism, in addition to related tools from Time Geography. PySTPrism is implemented in Python using the ArcPy module in ArcGIS Pro Desktop.

The carboxamide N,N-di-ethyl-meta-Toluamide (DEET) is the most effective and widely used insect repellent today. However, drawbacks concerning the efficacy and the safety of the repellent have led to efforts to design new classes of insect repellents. Through quantitative structure-Activity relationships, chemists have discovered two chemical groups of novel repellents: The acylpiperidines and the carboxamides, with the acylpiperidines generally more potent in biological assays. Although the exact mechanism of action of DEET and other repellents has not yet been thoroughly elucidated, previous research shows that the activity of insect odorant receptors are inhibited in the presence of repellents. The present electrophysiological …
Integrating Field Methods, Remote Sensing And Modeling To Monitor Climate-Adapted Tidal Marsh Restoration, Alexandra S. Thomsen
Integrating Field Methods, Remote Sensing And Modeling To Monitor Climate-Adapted Tidal Marsh Restoration, Alexandra S. Thomsen
AES Theses
Sea level rise threatens coastal wetlands worldwide. In response, wetland restoration projects are implementing strategies that decrease vulnerability to this threat. Vegetation monitoring at sites employing new restoration strategies, including determination of appropriate and efficient monitoring techniques, is critical to improve understanding of factors leading to restoration success and maximize benefits of future projects. In Central California, sediment addition raised a degraded marsh plain to a high elevation expected to be resilient to sea level rise over the next century. We conducted area searches of plant survival and modeled effects of nine predictors on new vegetation cover using two monitoring …

Associating Landscape Variables With Nesting Occupancy And Success Of Songbirds Using Nest Boxes In Semi-Urban Greenspaces, Amanda Preece
AES Theses
Habitat fragmentation and loss of biodiversity due to urbanization is happening at a rapid pace. Greenspaces within our cities can provide habitat for native species, and effective management of urban and semi-urban parks is an increasingly important way to support these species. I compared landscape metrics surrounding nest boxes used by five avian species in four semi-urban parks of central coastal California, USA, to determine which land cover elements best predicted nest box occupancy and success. Five species were included in this study – Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens), Chestnut-backed Chickadee (Poecile rufescens), Oak Titmouse (Baeolophus …

There are few bodies of literature that look at Black women’s body image in television media. When Black women were studied most research (Falconer & Neville, 2000; Jhally & Kilbourne, 2010; Smith, 2014; Shearon-Richardson, 2011;) compared them to White ideals. However, this study did a content analysis of Black women in predominantly Black or ethnically diverse television shows using qualitative studies that suggest a Black ideal. The researcher examined lead character(s) body shapes, comments about their body, hair texture and comments about their hair. This research looked at protective factors (aspects Black life that allow for more body satisfaction) like …
Microbial Experience Influences Tumor- Infiltrating T Lymphocytes, Hanna Groeber
Microbial Experience Influences Tumor- Infiltrating T Lymphocytes, Hanna Groeber
Masters Theses
Immune cells, including T cells, have been used for anti-cancer therapy with varying degrees of success. One potential reason for immunotherapy failures in clinical trials may be that typical specific pathogen free (SPF) mice do not accurately replicate human microbial experience, which has important influence on shaping the adaptive immune response. Recently, several previous studies have shown that the immune system of SPF mice more closely resembles newborn human immunity, whereas immune systems from mice exposed to diverse pathogens more closely reflect adult human immunity.
To study the impact of microbial experience on the immune response, we have adopted a …
Connecting Meaningful Moments: Exploring Empathy Through Storytelling, Samantha Maida
Connecting Meaningful Moments: Exploring Empathy Through Storytelling, Samantha Maida
Theses
As individuals transition through life, it is growing more and more difficult for everyone to live in the same world when perceptions of situations are skewed. Each individuals’ perception is colored by their life’s experiences which give rise to a distorted view of the world, creating biases, and affirming that our perception is a product of our past that is pushing forward into our future. The more technology promotes isolation and damages in-person communication, the more individuals are growing less aware of those around them, and how their experiences, and life events affect the way they view and respond to …

One of the most common malignancies affecting adults with the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) cancer predisposition syndrome is the malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST), a highly aggressive sarcoma that typically develops from benign plexiform neurofibromas. Approximately 8-13% of individuals with NF1 will develop MPNST during young adulthood. There are few therapeutic options, and the vast majority of people with these cancers will die within 5 years of diagnosis. Despite efforts to understand the pathogenesis of these aggressive tumors, the overall prognosis remains dismal. This manuscript will review the current understanding of the cellular and molecular progression of MPNST, diagnostic …

BACKGROUND: Gaps exist in our understanding of the clinical course of pouch-related disorders.
METHODS: We evaluated baseline disease activity and longitudinal treatment patterns among patients with inflammatory conditions of the pouch.
RESULTS: Among 468 patients with an ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA), 94 (20%) had acute pouchitis, 96 (21%) had chronic pouchitis, and 192 (41%) had Crohn disease of the pouch. Following an IPAA, 38% of patients were treated with a biologic and 11% underwent inflammatory bowel disease- or bowel-related surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment patterns after IPAA indicate that pouch-related disorders have a significant impact on individual patients and the healthcare system.

Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is an inflammatory and pruritic allergic skin disease with both genetic and environmental risk factors described. We performed mRNA sequencing of non-lesional axillary skin biopsies from nine German shepherd dogs. Obtained RNA sequences were mapped to the dog genome (CanFam3.1) and a high-quality skin transcriptome was generated with 23,510 expressed gene transcripts. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were defined by comparing three controls to five treated CAD cases. Using a leave-one-out analysis, we identified seven DEGs: five known to encode proteins with functions related to an activated immune system (CD209, CLEC4G, LOC102156842 (lipopolysaccharide-binding protein-like), LOC480601 (regakine-1-like), LOC479668 …

Aggressive Angiomyxoma In The Ischiorectal Fossa, Asra Wahid, Abdul Hakeem, Sadaf Khan
Medical College Documents
Aggressive Angiomyxoma (AA) is a soft tissue tumour that principally affects women of the reproductive age, primarily involving the pelvis and the perineum. Despite being slow growing, it is classified as aggressive due to its locally infiltrative nature and high recurrence. It is rare, often asymptomatic and is misdiagnosed. However, it has characteristic features on radiographic imaging. Complete surgical resection is the ideal approach to treat AA. We report a case of an aggressive angiomyxoma in a 17 year old female, located in the ischiorectal fossa and diagnosed incidentally on a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The lesion was excised without …

Background
Aberrant activity of cell cycle proteins is one of the key somatic events in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) pathogenesis. In most NSCLC cases, the retinoblastoma protein tumor suppressor (RB) becomes inactivated via constitutive phosphorylation by cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) 4/6, leading to uncontrolled cell proliferation. Palbociclib, a small molecule inhibitor of CDK4/6, has shown anti-tumor activity in vitro and in vivo, with recent studies demonstrating a functional role for palbociclib in reprogramming cellular metabolism. While palbociclib has shown efficacy in preclinical models of NSCLC, the metabolic consequences of CDK4/6 inhibition in this context are largely unknown.
