Optimal Directional Overcurrent Relay Coordination Using Artificial Immune Algorithm., A. Hatata, Sahar Kaddah, H. Abdraboh, M. Frahat
Mansoura Engineering Journal
High-penetration renewable energy-based generators in distribution systems cause a number of benefits and challenges for power system operators. The distribution system protection has traditionally been designed assuming the system to be radial. After connecting distributed generators (DG), part of the system may no longer be radial, which means that the coordination might not hold. The objective of protective relay coordination in an interconnected power system is to achieve selectivity without sacrificing sensitivity and fast fault clearance time. In this paper a novel method based on clonal selection algorithm of artificial immune system (AIS) is proposed for optimal coordination of overcurrent …

Soil-test biological activity (STBA) is a key indicator describing the functions of soil to catabolize organic amendments, promote soil organic C sequestration, and cycle nutrients. We explored how climatic zone, land use, and physiographic region affected the relationship of STBA with several soil fertility properties and processes. Soils from Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia (wet climate) were Aquults, Fluvents, Udalfs, Udepts, and Udults and soils from Nebraska and Oklahoma (dry climate) were Udolls and Ustolls. Annual cropland and perennial pasture were the land uses. The Prairie region had silt loam and silty clay loams, the Ridge–Valley region had silt …

Application Of Deterministic Lateral Displacement In Biological Cell Separation., Asmaa Khater, Mohamed Sabry, Hossam Abdelmeguid
Application Of Deterministic Lateral Displacement In Biological Cell Separation., Asmaa Khater, Mohamed Sabry, Hossam Abdelmeguid
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Separation of cells is a crucial operation in most of microbiology tests. It is usually preformed using large sized devices (few tens of cm). In this work, cell separation using a microfluidic device based on Deterministic Lateral Displacement (DLD) is considered. DLD is a promising technique having many advantages, including in particular the fact that it can never be clogged. The device is composed of a micro-channel containing an array of obstacles (also called posts) adequately arranged such as to separate cells based on their size. Distances between posts are much larger than separation size, also called critical size, to …

Collaboration In The Technical Communication Classroom: Negotiating Team Contracts In A Pwi, Alyssa Herman
Theses and Dissertations
As TPC teacher-scholars, we must acknowledge the overwhelming Whiteness of our field and the racism, ableism, and sexism inherent in our institutions. We must actively work toward inclusivity and socially just collaborations in our classrooms by encouraging dominant-identified students to confront their privileges and implicit biases in order to better engage with historically marginalized students. With that said, this thesis examines how teacher-scholars might take up a cultural-rhetorical approach to teaching TPC and how we might negotiate team contracts in PWIs. Firmly situated within the social justice turn, Herman draws from both feminist disability theory and critical race theory to …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Free-Stand Graphene/Silver Nanowire/Graphene Nano Composite As Transparent Conductive Film With Enhanced Stiffness, Chuanrui Guo, Yanxiao Li, Yanping Zhu, Chenglin Wu, Genda Chen
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
As-grown graphene via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has potential defects, cracks, and disordered grain boundaries induced by the synthesis and transfer process. Graphene/silver nanowire/graphene (Gr/AgNW/Gr) sandwich composite has been proposed to overcome these drawbacks significantly as the AgNW network can provide extra connections on graphene layers to enhance the stiffness and electrical conductivity. However, the existing substrate (polyethylene terephthalate (PET), glass, silicon, and so on) for composite production limits its application and mechanics behavior study. In this work, a vacuum annealing method is proposed and validated to synthesize the free-stand Gr/AgNW/Gr nanocomposite film on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) grids. AgNW …

Background: Inflammatory arthritis in children with Down syndrome (DS) was first described in 1984 and is now termed Down syndrome-associated arthritis (DA). Studies have shown that DA is under-recognized with a 19-month average delay in diagnosis. Additionally, most patients present with polyarticular, rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) negative disease. Current therapies for juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) have been used, but appear to be poorly tolerated, more toxic and less effective in patients with DA. There is currently no standardized approach to the assessment or management of DA. The objective of this study was to describe provider perspectives toward …

Analysis Identity Fusion And Psychosocial Development: How The Role Of Father, Mother And Son On Radicalization Within Family, Muhammad Luthfi Zuhdi, Muhamad Syauqillah
Journal of Strategic and Global Studies
One of crucial issues of radicalism lately is the involvement of family members in acts of terrorism. One of those interesting case is the case of Dita Oepriyanto’s family, the perpetrator of suicide bombing in one church in Surabaya, East Java. Family involvement in extremist acts and terrorism in Indonesia is not a new thing, the story of Dita Oeprianto is a historical cycle with different shifting actors. The story of the Leader of Darul Islam, RM. Kartosuwiryo who rebelled against the Indonesian republic accompanied by his wife and wife giving birth to children in the forest can be seen …

Initial Investigation Of Seasonal Flammability Of Three Invasive East Texas Forest Understory Fuels Using Thermogravimetric Analysis, Mike Tiller, Brian P. Oswald, Alyx Frantzen, Warren Conway, Ikuai Hung
Faculty Publications
East Texas forest understory fuels have become increasingly infested with invasive species which have contributed to greater hazardous fuel loads when combined with decades of fire exclusion and passive management. This study focused on estimating seasonal changes in flammability parameters of invasive yaupon (Ilex vomitoria), Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense), and Chinese tallow (Triadica sebifera) using thermogravimetric analysis. Foliage and stem samples were collected in the dormant (February) and growing (August) seasons. Differential thermogravimetric (DTG) and proximate analyses were used to estimate species specific flammability parameters related to relative spontaneous ignition temperature (RSIT), gas-phase maximum …

The Impact Of Social Interactions On Resettled Refugee Health, Shahjadi Zaman
Political Science ETDs
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effects of social interactions and other factors on the self-reported physical and mental health of former refugees in their host country. Social relationships and interactions consist of different layers extending from individual personal relations, to social networks, to collective activities. Using data from a public opinion survey of newly resettled Bhutanese and Rohingya refugees in Michigan, I find that along with their economic situations, like employment and income, social integration is an important determinant of physical and mental health among resettled refugees. In particular, resettled refugees tend to have better health …

The protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease. This neglected tropical disease causes severe morbidity and mortality in endemic regions. About 30% of T. cruzi infected individuals will present with cardiac complications. Invasive trypomastigotes released from infected cells can be carried in the vascular endothelial system to infect neighboring and distant cells. During the process of cellular infection, the parasite induces host cells, to increase the levels of host thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), to facilitate the process of infection. TSP-1 plays important roles in the functioning of vascular cells, including vascular endothelial cells with important implications in cardiovascular …

Modeling And Simulation Of A Micro Pump And Its Performance., Mohamed Ibrahim, Mohamed Mansour, Mohamed Sabry
Mansoura Engineering Journal
A transient 2D model of Valve-less micro-pump is constructed and used to study pump performance under different conditions through numerical simulation. Operating conditions, design parameters and fluid properties effect on the micro pump net flow rate have been investigated. The operating frequency was found to be a critical operating parameter. Therefore, the effect of other design and operating conditions on the resonance frequency (optimum operating frequency) has been studied. Also, general correlations for the micro pump dimensionless performance characteristics have been deduced with sufficient accuracy, within the studied range.

The impact that the systemic invisibility of indigenous people in the national narrative has on addiction and the recovery process cannot be overstated. An exploration of the nature of how this invisibility has evolved and is currently maintained may facilitate a deeper understanding of the issues. Understanding the importance of indigenous storytelling and identity can help us more effectively meet those working toward recovery. Anchoring such work, inalienability of indigenous identity and the wisdom of indigenous storytelling will be examined as it relates to a recovery process.

Nonhost disease resistance is the most common type of plant defense mechanism against potential pathogens. In this study, the metabolic enzyme formate dehydrogenase (FDH1) was identified to be involved in nonhost disease resistance in Nicotiana benthamiana and Arabidopsis thaliana. In Arabidopsis, AtFDH1 was highly upregulated in response to both host and nonhost bacterial pathogens. Arabidopsis Atfdh1 mutants were compromised in nonhost resistance, basal resistance, and gene-for-gene resistance. The expression patterns of salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) marker genes after pathogen infections in Atfdh1 mutant indicated that SA is most likely involved in the FDH1-mediated plant defense response to …

Nontuberculous (atypical) mycobacteria rarely cause skin and soft tissue infections. Tattooing with contaminated gray ink has been implicated in previously reported outbreaks. We report the case of a 39-year-old Hispanic man who presented with a refractory, pruritic, papular eruption within the distribution of his tattoo with punch biopsy demonstrating papillary dermal granulomatous and suppurative inflammation surrounding small collections of acid-fast bacilli with associated superficial and deep dermal perivascular lymphatic inflammation consistent with nontuberculous mycobacterial infection. Although uncommon, clinicians should consider nontuberculous mycobacterial infection in the differential diagnosis of refractory tattooassociated skin eruptions.
