It's Not A Phase Mom: How Parental Acceptance Influences Long Term Well Being For Sexual And Gender Minorities, Jonathan Gaughan
It's Not A Phase Mom: How Parental Acceptance Influences Long Term Well Being For Sexual And Gender Minorities, Jonathan Gaughan
Research Days Posters 2020
Disclosure of sexual and/or gender minority status, or "coming out", is often an important step for sexual and gender minorities (SGM) that, along with components of familial acceptance such as support, discussion, and expression of affection, are critical in identity formation. While many studies have examined the harms of familial rejection on emerging SGM adults, few studies have examined the possible benefits of family acceptance. Our study examined the influence of SGM's reported levels of accepting parental behaviors in regards to self-image, sexual satisfaction, and outlook on relationships which may have far-reaching implications for long-term health and happiness of emerging …
Leadership Strategies For Reducing Turnover Within Child Welfare Departments, Lace Shelise Whitten
Leadership Strategies For Reducing Turnover Within Child Welfare Departments, Lace Shelise Whitten
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Employee turnover costs companies billions of dollars annually and can damage business sustainability. Childcare managers who lack leadership strategies may struggle to reduce employee turnover. Grounded in the motivation-hygiene theory, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore leadership strategies childcare managers in Polk County, Florida, use to reduce employee turnover. Data were collected through semistructured face-to-face interviews with 5 purposively selected childcare managers who have used leadership strategies to reduce employee turnover. Data were also collected via field notes, observations, and company documents. Four themes emerged from the thematic analysis of the data: open communication, feedback …

Stable behavioral traits (temperament, personality) often predict health outcomes. Temperament-specific differences in immune function could explain temperament-specific health outcomes, however, we have limited information on whether immune function varies by personality. In the present study, we examined the relationship between a basic behavioral trait (behavioral-inhibition vs. non-inhibition) and two immune responses (innate inflammation and delayed-type hypersensitivity, DTH) in a rodent model. In humans, behavioral inhibition (fearful temperament) is associated with altered stress physiology and allergies. In laboratory rats, the trait is associated with elevated glucocorticoid production. We hypothesized that behavioral inhibition is associated with glucocorticoid resistance and dampened T-helper 1 …
Nil/Tu,O Child And Family Services Society V. B.C. Government And Service Employees’ Union’ And Communications, Energy And Paperworkers Union Of Canada V. Native Child And Family Services Of Toronto, Naiomi Metallic
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
In NIL/TU,O and Native Child, the Supreme Court of Canada held that unions applying for certification to represent employees of Indigenous-run child and family agencies ought to be certified under provincial labour relations legislation. The majority in both cases applied a presumptive rule that labour relations are generally provincial matters. This presumption was not displaced by the fact that both agencies were Indigenous-run organizations. The Indigenous nature of the organizations, their clientele, staff, and governance, or their own preferences for labour regimes made no difference to the Court’s analysis.

Creative And Responsive Advocacy For Reconciliation: The Application Of Gladue Principles In Administrative Law, Andrew Martin
Creative And Responsive Advocacy For Reconciliation: The Application Of Gladue Principles In Administrative Law, Andrew Martin
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
A s a response to the estrangement and alienation of Indigenous peoples from the Canadian justice system, Gladue principles are central to reconciliation in sentencing and other criminal law contexts. However, the role of Gladue principles in administrative law more broadly remains uncertain. In this paper, I argue that the factors underlying Indigenous peoples’ estrangement and alienation from the justice system indicate estrangement and alienation from the administrative state itself, and thus Gladue principles appropriately apply in administrative law contexts. Using the results of a comprehensive search of reported decisions by tribunals and by courts on judicial review, I analyze …
Attributions Of Blame In A Hypothetical Child Sexual Abuse Case: Roles Of Behavior Problems And Frequency Of Abuse, Kate Theimer, David J. Hansen
Attributions Of Blame In A Hypothetical Child Sexual Abuse Case: Roles Of Behavior Problems And Frequency Of Abuse, Kate Theimer, David J. Hansen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Youth who are blamed for their sexual abuse may experience increased negative outcomes, such as amplified self-blame. Similarly, blaming nonoffending parents can impede their ability to support their child following disclosure. Understanding the factors that influence how people perceive victim, caregiver, and perpetrator responsibility is imperative for the protection and treatment of families who have experienced sexual abuse. Little research has explored victim and abuse characteristics that influence the perception of sexual abuse. As such, the purpose of this study was to examine the roles of behavior problems and frequency of abuse in the attribution of blame in a hypothetical …

Target Population and Need
Hamilton County, Ohio exhibits high rates of poverty, unemployment, and negative health outcomes. Specifically, Hamilton County continues to perform poorly in maternal and child health outcomes such as infant mortality, low birth weight, gestational diabetes, and preterm birth rates. Many people in the community exbibit poor health behaviors such as inadequate prenatal care, drug use during pregnancy, and smoking during pregnancy.
Program Approach
The Hamilton County Health Department intends to implement an evidence based group prenatal care program, CenteringPregnancy, in three health centers around Hamilton County in an effort to reduce poor maternal and child health …
Sexual Risk: Contributing Factors To High-Risk Sexual Behaviors In A Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming Population, Jo Crowl
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
There are a variety of factors associated with the frequency of risky sexual behaviors. Whereas spirituality is a protective factor for certain populations, depression is correlated with higher rates of sexual risk behaviors. Until now, the relationship between access to healthcare and these risky sexual behaviors has not been studied. This study sought to determine the impact of spirituality, depression, and access to healthcare with risky sexual behaviors for individuals who identify as transgender/gender non-conforming (TGNC). Data was collected from TGNC adults over the age of 18 using an online survey method. This study did not find significant relationships involving …

Augusto Boal said "Theatre is a form of knowledge; it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future, rather than just waiting for it." I have been a teacher in a private school setting for 27 years. In my work with students, it becomes increasingly important to me that the projects in which I engage become transformative, not only for me and my students, but for my audiences as well. Finding ways that promote awareness of social justice, both locally and globally, has become paramount. My ongoing goal is to inspire …
Context Of Injury Among Abusive And Accidental Injuries In Children, Lindsay Eysenbach
Context Of Injury Among Abusive And Accidental Injuries In Children, Lindsay Eysenbach
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Child physical abuse is a significant public health challenge with an incidence of approximately 6.4 hospitalized cases per 100,000 children. Many abused children, however, will go undiagnosed by physicians evaluating these injuries. Assessing whether a child has been abused is a high-stakes decision: a missed case leaves a child vulnerable to future injury, but an inaccurate diagnosis of abuse may be greatly disruptive and stigmatizing to children and their families. Previous research has established key physical examination and radiographic findings that are associated with abusive injury. A gap in the literature, however, is the role of additional injury circumstances and …
People Who Hurt Animals Don't Stop With Animals: The Use Of Cross-Checking Domestic Violence And Animal Abuse Registries In New Jersey To Protect The Vulnerable, Emerald Sheay
Animal Law Review
This Note explores the link between domestic violence and animal abuse and argues that due to such a link, New Jersey should enact a publicly searchable, cross-checking animal abuse registry and a domestic violence registry. Numerous studies confirm the connection between domestic violence and animal abuse. By examining the scope and history of these abuses, and exploring the status of registries in various states, this Note aims to explain the problems these issues pose to our society. Enacting these registries in New Jersey could keep law enforcement aware of illegal activity, reveal child abuse, and prevent the online selling of …

Do Foster Care Agencies Discriminate Against Gay Couples? Evidence From A Correspondence Study, Mattie Mackenzie-Oiu, David Schwegman, Leonard M. Lopoo
Center for Policy Research
There has been considerable recent debate regarding proposed policies that would allow foster care administrators to discriminate on the basis of the sexual orientation of the foster parent. To date, however, we know very little about the level of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the foster care system. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first empirical investigation to ask whether foster care agencies, the public and nonprofit firms that facilitate foster care placements, respond similarly to emails sent by fictitious same-sex and heterosexual couples who inquire about becoming foster parents. Our results suggest that …

The Role Of Self-Efficacy In The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma And Anxiety, Elaine Green
The Role Of Self-Efficacy In The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma And Anxiety, Elaine Green
Open Access Master's Theses
Traumatic childhood experiences (physical abuse and neglect, emotional abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse) have surprisingly high incidence rates and predict to a variety of negative health outcomes, such as anxiety. Although the relationship between childhood trauma and anxiety has been well documented, more research is necessary in order to understand the mechanisms underlying this relationship. The current study hypothesized that academic self-efficacy, the perception that one has the ability to achieve one’s desired outcomes in academic endeavors, would mediate the relationship between childhood trauma and anxiety in a sample of college students (n=204). Furthermore, it was hypothesized …
The Crippling Costs Of The Juvenile Justice System: A Legal And Policy Argument For Eliminating Fines And Fees For Youth Offenders, Leigh R. Shapiro
The Crippling Costs Of The Juvenile Justice System: A Legal And Policy Argument For Eliminating Fines And Fees For Youth Offenders, Leigh R. Shapiro
Emory Law Journal
Across the United States, approximately one million youth appear in juvenile court each year. In almost every state, youth and their families face monetary charges for a young person’s involvement in the juvenile justice system. Too often the inability to pay subjects juveniles and their families to incarceration, suspension of driver’s licenses, an inability to expunge records, and economic and social stress, and pushes the youth offender deeper into the juvenile justice system. Over one hundred years ago, the Illinois legislature established the first separate juvenile court system. That system was designed to recognize that youth are different from adults …
The Effects Of Early Child Physical Abuse On Social And Academic Competence In Middle Childhood, Avery Beatty
The Effects Of Early Child Physical Abuse On Social And Academic Competence In Middle Childhood, Avery Beatty
Open Access Master's Theses
Childhood maltreatment is a national health crisis that affected at least 674,000 children and killed 1,720 more in the United States in 2017 alone (Crooks & Wolfe, 2007; U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2019). This study specifically focuses on the effects of early childhood physical abuse at age 5 on social and academic competence in middle childhood. Data for this study were derived from a 24-year longitudinal, multisite study called the Child Development Project (CDP) (Lansford et al., 2002). There were 585 children included in the dataset from three sites: Bloomington, Indiana, and Nashville and Knoxville, Tennessee who …

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Rates Among Children In Foster Versus Family Kinship Care, Rashanda Allen
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Rates Among Children In Foster Versus Family Kinship Care, Rashanda Allen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Children in foster care represent a highly traumatized population. However, trauma researchers studying this population have focused primarily on maltreatment rather than the full spectrum of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) attributes and symptoms for children living in nonkinship foster homes versus kinship foster homes. The purpose of this study was to address this gap in the literature, as well as examine the benefits and limitations of children placed in kinship and nonkinship foster homes. Attachment theory was the theoretical framework. The research questions centered on the prevalence of specific types of posttraumatic stress symptoms for a sample of children living …
School Psychologist Self-Care Practices And Burnout Symptoms, Mary Jean Rainsford
School Psychologist Self-Care Practices And Burnout Symptoms, Mary Jean Rainsford
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
School psychologists face a host of responsibilities and stressors in their profession. Burnout is a common issue among school psychologists and other helping professionals. Self-care has been noted as a preventative measure against burnout, but there is little extant research on its relationship to burnout. A survey was conducted with currently practicing school psychologists in the United States to find a connection between the presence and frequency of self-care practice and burnout symptoms. The survey found considerable differences in burnout scores between school psychologists who reported practicing self-care, compared to those who did not. Moreover, significant inverse correlations were found …
Child Welfare Workers' Perceptions Of The Effective Black Parenting Program, Kharmynn M. Bullock
Child Welfare Workers' Perceptions Of The Effective Black Parenting Program, Kharmynn M. Bullock
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The child welfare system (CWS) serves around half a million families each year in America. Of those, in Texas, hundreds of thousands of African American families represent the greatest percentages of families in the CWS when compared with their respective numbers in the general population. In 2013, African American children made up about 13.9% of the overall population of children in the United States; however, these children represented close to 26% (or 101,938) African American children in the system with CWS. Child Protective Services (CPS) has various programs and services, including parent education referrals to social services agencies that carry …
Community-Based Counselors’ Experiences Counseling Female Adjudicated Youth: A Basic Qualitative Study, Ericka Pinckney
Community-Based Counselors’ Experiences Counseling Female Adjudicated Youth: A Basic Qualitative Study, Ericka Pinckney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Licensed professional counselors (LPCs) have encountered difficulties engaging at-risk youth in meaningful treatment. Youth who faced great stress such as abuse, neglect, truancy, family problems, homelessness, and traumatic events have presented with challenging behaviors. Literature suggested adjudicated youth engaged in relational and physical aggression; these behaviors increased the risk for out-of-home placement. Research on community based LPCs’ professional experiences in working with adjudicated female youth is scarce. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore community-based counselors' experiences treating female adjudicated youth. Professional counselors' techniques and strategies were explored. The relational-cultural theory provided the conceptual lens through which …

The Art Of Reflection: A Personal Account Of Reflexive Teaching Artistry And Personal Praxis, Kate Kilpatrick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Teaching Artists (that is, artists who teach) are in a constant state of reflection and self-evaluation. Reflexive Teaching Artistry is the ability to apply personal reflection to practice as a means to better support and engage students. Reflection is certainly useful at the culmination of a class or project, but how does reflecting throughout the creative process benefit participants? How can a Teaching Artist's reflections be applied to their practice throughout a creative process to better serve the objectives of a program? Using the lens of Reflexive Teaching Artistry, this thesis examines three unique drama-based projects and the instances of …

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Approximately 15 million children under age 6 are in childcare settings, offering childcare providers an opportunity to influence children’s dietary intake. Childcare settings vary in organizational structure – childcare centers (CCCs) vs. family childcare homes (FCCHs) – and in geographical location – urban vs. rural. Research on the nutrition-related best practices across these childcare settings is scarce. The objective of this study is to compare nutrition-related best practices of CCCs and FCCHs that participate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) in rural and urban Nebraska. Nebraska providers (urban n = 591; rural n = 579) reported implementation …
