Perceptions Of Police Self- Legitimacy In The Rocky Mountain Region Of The United States, Nathan Olin
Perceptions Of Police Self- Legitimacy In The Rocky Mountain Region Of The United States, Nathan Olin
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Recently, United States law enforcement officers have faced heavy criticism from both the public and media. Such criticism includes, but is not limited to, questions of police legitimacy, efficacy and law enforcement's overall effectiveness in fighting crime. Public and media criticism stems, in part from stigmatizing incidents occurring in Baltimore, Maryland and Ferguson, Missouri. Unfortunately, this has led to ambushes of police officers and a disregard for the welfare of officers serving their communities. However, until recently research has focused upon citizen perceptions of police legitimacy which has left police perceptions of their own legitimacy unexplored. Therefore, the current study …
Test-Driving Interventions For Teachers To Improve Treatment Integrity, Viktoria Papp
Test-Driving Interventions For Teachers To Improve Treatment Integrity, Viktoria Papp
Honors Theses
Teachers often have to implement interventions in the classroom to address challenging student behaviors. Such issues are often addressed during behavioral consultation which involves working with a specialized consultant, such as a school psychologist, to determine the most robust strategy that will predictably have the greatest impact in addressing the problematic behavior. Equally important in this intervention process is the application of any intervention technique or strategy in the manner in which it has been designed and investigated to work based on supporting research.
There is an increasing need for consultants to consider utilizing strategies that promote the adherence to …
Argumentative Synthesis Essay On Enhanced Interrogation Techniques, Gwendolyn D. Wheatley
Argumentative Synthesis Essay On Enhanced Interrogation Techniques, Gwendolyn D. Wheatley
The Downtown Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal Written and Peer-Reviewed by Mandel Honors College Students at Cleveland State University
This essay discusses enhanced interrogation techniques. For reference, enhanced interrogation techniques are interrogation techniques that involve “physically coercive interventions” (Duke & Puyvelde, 2017). The U.S. government supported these techniques after the attacks on September 11, 2001. This essay argues that enhanced interrogation techniques should not be used in interrogations because they are unethical, ineffective, and negatively impact the mental health of the interrogators using these techniques. Additionally, the essay references articles on the varied viewpoints as well as explains information on these interrogation techniques. Also, the essay argues that enhanced interrogation techniques encourage people to be cruel and inhumane. Moreover, …
Justice, Prevention, Respect: A Critical Investigation Of Sexual Violence On College Campuses; And A Denunciation Of Carceral Feminism, Naomi Strait Ms.
Justice, Prevention, Respect: A Critical Investigation Of Sexual Violence On College Campuses; And A Denunciation Of Carceral Feminism, Naomi Strait Ms.
American Studies Honors Projects
Sexual violence is a “constructed” crime informed by race, class, and gender, although the effects of identity on the issue of sexual violence are often ignored in contemporary discourse. In the United States, the responsibility for holding sexually violent people accountable is laid upon the criminal justice system. However, the criminal justice system is inherently flawed and unjust, making the administration of true justice nearly impossible. Furthermore, mainstream feminists have long relied on the prison industrial complex to aid them in the fight against sexual violence, a phenomenon known as carceral feminism. A punitive, carceral feminist mindset has penetrated higher …
The Effect Upon State Crime Rates Of The Legalization Of Recreational Marijuana In California, Robert Boxerman
The Effect Upon State Crime Rates Of The Legalization Of Recreational Marijuana In California, Robert Boxerman
Theses
This work examines criminal effects of the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state of California in 2016. While multiple states have legalized marijuana for recreational purposes, there is little empirical evidence to determine the criminal effect, if any, of introducing marijuana products into the legal market. The research analyzes crime rates pre and post legalization. Crime rates from the years 1990-2018 are taken from the California Attorney General Office “Crime in California” annual report, and consist of FBI Part I offenses: murder and non-negligent homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft, and arson. Misdemeanor drug arrests, …

Enacting And Refining Critical Teaching: A Multi-Case Study On Criminology/Criminal Justice Professors, Joshua Abreu
Enacting And Refining Critical Teaching: A Multi-Case Study On Criminology/Criminal Justice Professors, Joshua Abreu
Doctoral Dissertations
This multi-case study centers on how Criminology/Criminal Justice (CCJ) professors enact and refine a teaching approach that helps students understand how practices from their field of study can reinforce systemic discrimination and its harmful consequences. These are practices that have disproportionately threatened the physical, emotional, and/or economic conditions of communities with limited socio-political power. This research is important because college instructors play an influential role in preparing and enhancing the country’s workforce. Thus, if college instructors do not prepare students as critically-minded professionals, then students may reproduce practices that can lead to detrimental social, political, and economic outcomes for the …

Technology In Major League Baseball: 2017 Houston Astros, Prisoner’S Dilemma, And Behavioral Solutions, Spencer Kinyon
Honors Scholar Theses
This paper compares and contrasts the economic model for baseball in the 20th century without technology and the economic model for baseball in the 21st century with technology. Major League Baseball (MLB) teams have evolved to use technology to improve the performance of players on the field. This paper explores the economics of penalties in MLB and how teams are penalized for their use of illegal technology. In the 2017 season, the Houston Astros used illegal technology that led the team to win the World Series. This paper provides a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether or not a team should …
Social Support, Self-Efficacy, And Academic Outcomes In College Students, Kasey Phelps
Social Support, Self-Efficacy, And Academic Outcomes In College Students, Kasey Phelps
Undergraduate Theses
When entering higher education, young adults are presented with a multitude of choice. Choosing a major, let alone a career, is a daunting task. In this thesis, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers are the focus. Why is it that, in modern day, there are still great disparities among women and sexual minorities within STEM? Women and sexual minorities have the interest; the issue lies within social support, as well as assumed gender roles. This thesis explores how differing measures of gender (in order to capture a participant's gender identity and gender expression) are vital to understanding more of …

Corruption In Match-Fixing Within Sports: The Need To Regulate Future Legislation (A Comparative Study And Lesson From The Australian System Of Law), Ranto Sabungan Silalahi
Corruption In Match-Fixing Within Sports: The Need To Regulate Future Legislation (A Comparative Study And Lesson From The Australian System Of Law), Ranto Sabungan Silalahi
Indonesia Law Review
The Indonesian football league has been devastated greatly because of match-fixing, a problem that has caused the decline of the country’s achievements in international events. The ongoing mechanism of using sports law or lex sportiva is considered ineffective because it provides no deterrent effect on offenders. The country may learn from Australia, who has gained many international sports achievements by previously eradicating match-fixing in sports, including football. Australia has included match-fixing among acts of sports corruption, and offenders may be sanctioned both by receiving criminal punishment from a law authority and disciplinary sanction from a sport or football authority. To …
A License To Kill: The Institutional Failure Of The Legal System To Hold Police Accountable, Eliana Fleischer
A License To Kill: The Institutional Failure Of The Legal System To Hold Police Accountable, Eliana Fleischer
Jepson School of Leadership Studies Research Symposium
In recent years, police shootings of unarmed African American men have become nationally visible. With few exceptions, the police officers involved in those shootings have escaped any criminal penalties. This paper addresses the question: Why is it that so few police officers are convicted after shooting unarmed African Americans? This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach in answering this question. First, prosecutorial power and lack of accountability allow prosecutors to advocate for accused police officers to further their own career prospects. Second, the Supreme Court has adapted the qualified immunity and excessive force doctrines to become nearly all-encompassing legal shields for …
A Behavioral Analysis Of Intimate Partner Violence Victims, Maryssa Presbitero
A Behavioral Analysis Of Intimate Partner Violence Victims, Maryssa Presbitero
Honors Theses
This study derived from the stories of eight women from varying backgrounds who have experienced intimate partner abuse. My analysis focuses on identifying themes across the transcripts of their qualitative open-ended interviews. I was specifically interested in how intimate partner abuse impacted the women’s behavior in terms of surviving the relationships and navigating escape. Given that the interviews included life histories, I was able to also examine themes related to childhood victimization as well. Patterns that arose from their experiences include exposure to violence in the home as children, escalation of abuse in their adult intimate relationships, various struggles to …

Analyses Of Prosecutorial Power And Discretion In Mississippi: Evaluating Proposals To Address Misconduct And Abuse, Lucy Pruitt
Honors Theses
This thesis seeks to create a policy proposal in order to address incidences of prosecutorial misconduct and abuse of discretion in the Mississippi criminal justice system. To do so, the author has summarized and analyzed seven criminal cases in which defendants have become victims of prosecutorial misconduct in order to shed light on the lack of prosecutorial accountability in the state’s criminal justice system. In an attempt to solve the problem, the author has developed a novel grading rubric in order to objectively and systematically analyze and evaluate previously proposed policy recommendations by legal experts and justice organizations. The successes …

In the practice of judiciary in Indonesia, the phenomenon of direct trial of cases of punishment by the press appeared and then broadcast live through television media, this could occur in a situation as a trial announced for the public. This practice has a negative impact, among others, will refute the principle of the presumption of innocence and have an impact on the evidence at the trial. This study aims to find out and analyze the provisions regarding the coverage of trials in court by disputes with the public interest and the principle of examination at the trial open to …

The History And Workings Of Virginia’S Community Services Boards: An In-Depth Look At Rappahannock Area Community Services Board, Molly Gehman
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This thesis studies the historic development of mental health care in the Commonwealth of Virginia and conducts a detailed examination of the mandated mental health services provided by the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB). To conduct this review, the mental health services provided by RACSB were compared with two other Community Services Boards (CSBs), the Loudoun County CSB and the Dickenson County CSB. Results show the importance of community health care and jail diversion programs when compared with the historic mental health care methods of institutionalization and imprisonment. Results also show that health care in Virginia is operated out …

Anthropologists have worked in legal arenas as experts on civil, criminal, and asylum cases throughout the history of the discipline. Today expert witnesses give opinions on the conditions of countries where immigrants flee, and that work includes ethnographic interviewing, research into the causes of political and social violence, and appearing in court through written affidavits and personal testimony. Expert testimony today includes helping in the defense of people fleeing intimate partner violence, persecution based on sexual orientation, threats and violence by gangs, and those whose political opinions put them at risk. Immigrants in the United States face institutional culture shock, …
Challenges For Maya Family Continuity In A Transbordered World, James Loucky, Katie Goger
Challenges For Maya Family Continuity In A Transbordered World, James Loucky, Katie Goger
Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis
Migration between Central America and countries to the north has increased in scale as well as in contentiousness as a political challenge. Too often, those most involved are peripheral to public discourse and policies. Today sizeable numbers of families, including indigenous Maya families, are participants not only in movement but as through separations across national borders and time. Evolving strategies for maintaining or recreating social cohesion amid disruptions of migration and resettlement involve parents as well as children. Drawing on experiences of families from one highland Guatemalan community, and comparative research into adaptive strategies of immigrant families in the United …

Paraphilias: A Survey Of Experts, Cecilia Allan
Student Theses
There is limited research examining the processes utilized when making diagnoses in sexual offender civil commitment (SVP) evaluations. The purpose of this research was to examine mental health professionals’ (MHPs) opinions towards, and use of, paraphilic diagnoses in SVP evaluations. In particular, other-specified (OS) paraphilic diagnoses of hebephilia and nonconsent were examined. Results indicate a lack of understanding among MHPs regarding how to recognize and apply OS paraphilic diagnoses. Findings also provide insight into how and why MHPs choose to diagnose OS paraphilias, demonstrating a high level of reliance on documentation. Results indicate the existence of an adversarial allegiance among …
The Tort Of Interference With Custody: A Tale Of Two Jurisdictions, David Crump
The Tort Of Interference With Custody: A Tale Of Two Jurisdictions, David Crump
San Diego Law Review
Interference with custody is a malignant tort. As a result, most jurisdictions have recognized liability for the underlying conduct through the common law or by statute. But the proper function of this legal theory requires balanced adjudication. When former spouses are cooperative, they usually act informally to adjust visitation, and a jurisdiction that applies the interference tort too broadly may discourage this desirable behavior. On the other hand, a jurisdiction that makes the tort too difficult to prove may encourage destructive conduct.
This Article considers two examples: cases from different states, with different results. A decision by the New Jersey …
