How To Enhance Tourist Perceptions Of Environmental Issues Through Nature Images: An Importance-Performance Analysis, Hye Jeong Park, Eunkyoung Park
How To Enhance Tourist Perceptions Of Environmental Issues Through Nature Images: An Importance-Performance Analysis, Hye Jeong Park, Eunkyoung Park
Journal of Global Business Insights
Environmental problems have been discussed as a serious issue across the world. To conserve nature, many environmental organizations have tried to facilitate tourists’ environmental perceptions by using nature images on their websites. However, few guidelines have been introduced regarding how to select appropriate nature images. Given this gap, this study conducted an importance-performance analysis (IPA) which provides the specific guideline for the use of appropriate nature images through nature-related websites. A total of 526 participants were recruited through an online survey. The results revealed that 14 nature images were categorized as Useful, Healthy, and Spontaneous nature images and identified different …
Networked Music Performance In Virtual Reality: Current Perspectives, Ben Loveridge
Networked Music Performance In Virtual Reality: Current Perspectives, Ben Loveridge
Journal of Network Music and Arts
The ability for musicians to interact face-to-face has been highly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Physical distancing and travel restrictions have forced teaching, rehearsals, and performances to be moved online. The use of videoconference platforms designed for conversation has also meant accepting their limitations when used in musical contexts. For example, in networked music performance (NMP), low-latency audio is usually transmitted alongside a separate video image. Since videoconference systems usually have a higher degree of in-built delay, the result is that performers often ignore the video image of each other in order to maintain a steady rhythm. If musicians usually …

Virtual Viewpoint Synthesis Based On Grid Mapping, Yao Li, Qiongying Wu, Xu Hui
Virtual Viewpoint Synthesis Based On Grid Mapping, Yao Li, Qiongying Wu, Xu Hui
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Due to imperfect depth maps, occlusion and the illumination difference between reference images, annoying artifacts, such as holes and ghost edges, appearing in the rendering image by DIBR, holes filling being time-consuming, triangle mesh based on the depth contour and maps mesh triangles with energy constrains were created. Image fusion algorithm merged different viewpoint images and got final virtual viewpoint image. While DIBR warped the image with pixels, triangles were mapped with. Compared with the traditional DIBR, the proposed algorithm has a faster processing speed than the traditional pixel based processing method in the same image quality.

Gpu-Accelerated Cloth Animation Based On Module Division, Kun Zhou, Liu Zhen, Gaoqi He, Chen Tian, Tingting Liu, Cuijuan Liu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In order to improve the simulation speed of cloth animation, a module division parallel computing method was proposed by studying two kinds of cloth simulation models with dynamics and position based dynamics (PBD). A computing task was divided into a plurality of independent blocks by the way of data block. GPU parallel computing was used within the data block to improve the real-time performance and robustness of the cloth simulation. The applicability and effectiveness of the algorithm were verified under different scenarios and stochastic wind field. Experimental results show that under the same conditions, the proposed method can effectively …
Va-U: Addressing The Gaps In Respiratory Protection Through A Holistic Open-Sourced Design Alternative, Aishwarya Uniyal
Va-U: Addressing The Gaps In Respiratory Protection Through A Holistic Open-Sourced Design Alternative, Aishwarya Uniyal
Theses
With industrialization and urbanization, more populations, whether at the workplace or outside in the streets, find themselves exposed to contaminated air. Respiratory hazards and illnesses arising thereof are prevalent across most industries and economies. Beyond developed economies with strong labor laws, a large part of the workforce faces the lack of access to respiratory protection, which also is evident in the gaps of knowledge of its correct use. Even among the groups with access to respirators, incorrect use arising out of miscommunication or comfort is common. Evaluating the design and use of the different types of respirators while also studying …

The Harlem Book Of The Dead: Pan-Africanism, Funerary Portraiture, And The African-American Way Of Death, Jessica D. Feldman
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the text and images contained in James Van Der Zee and Camille Billops’s seminal photobook The Harlem Book of the Dead (1978). The title, frontispiece, and introduction, combined with Van Der Zee’s funerary portraits, illuminate the connection between African-American rituals of death and Pan-Africanism. While these two concepts appear to be distinct, they are both predicated upon and intrinsically linked to key values in African American culture, including liberation and the meaning of community. Each chapter focuses on a different contextual framework for situating The Harlem Book of the Dead within the historical and political moment …

In modern American culture, a lack of emphasis has developed in regards to education and its value and role for the future. This has plagued the nation with despair, which has increased over the last several years. A growing interest in STEAM education and the available paths following secondary education, we can revitalize the nation and redirect our future to a more lucrative outcome: vocations, entrepreneurship, or post-secondary education based upon the correct path for each individual life.
The application of STEAM in education can create opportunities and expand knowledge in fields across the board: exposure to arts can create …

Nigerian educational statistics reflect a country in crisis. Several factors drive this trend: early marriages; poorly-trained and underpaid teachers; and extensive armed conflicts. This paper describes a collaboration between three universities on a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) grant-funded project to intervene in this crisis. Focusing on the educational system in two states, the project aims to improve educational materials and teaching strategies in 200 schools. Our research team employs a co-design methodology informed by the “co-creation” work of Sanders and Stappers (2008), Druin’s (1999, 2002, 2005) work on “cooperative inquiry,” and Martens, Rinnert, and Andersen’s (2018)’s work …

Multidisciplinary Design Collaboration In The Lenses Of Cscw And Current Technology Enablement, Mimi Nguyen, Céline Mougenot
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper aims to better understand team dynamic aspects in multidisciplinary design collaboration in reference to the CSCW discourse. We present an exploratory literature review and co-occurrence analysis of emerged themes from the studies. Then, we juxtapose the findings with technology-enabled tools suggested for CSCW. Finally, we review the industry relevance of the proposed tools. To illustrate our recommendation for future research, we discuss and suggest a matrix evaluating existing collaborative systems based on the identified team dynamics aspects. We identified two critical aspects, that are vulnerable in the digital channels: shared understanding and trust. The results allow us to …
Over The Rainbow: Sharing A Cross-Disciplinary Philosophy Of Waste Through Spectrum Visualisation, Manuela Taboada, Alice Payne
Over The Rainbow: Sharing A Cross-Disciplinary Philosophy Of Waste Through Spectrum Visualisation, Manuela Taboada, Alice Payne
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Waste is a material problem and a cultural condition. Many philosophies and visualisation resources exist for addressing waste such as waste hierarchies and circular economy diagrams. These diagrams, however, are not always enough to represent the intrinsic complexities related to waste systems or the interactions that exist between current and potential interventions. In this paper we contribute an original framework for understanding waste and propose a visualisation of waste as a spectrum of possibilities rather than as a series of discrete, disconnected interventions. The Waste Rainbow invites users to “plot” interventions and to think about these interventions and their relationships …

Whiteness In Design Practice: The Need To Prioritize Process Over Artefact., Meghan Kelly
Whiteness In Design Practice: The Need To Prioritize Process Over Artefact., Meghan Kelly
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This article will interrogate the issues associated with non-Indigenous designers working with Indigenous knowledges in commercial design practice. It will analyze the position of ‘whiteness’ to appreciate the ongoing impact of colonialism on Indigenous representation and identity creation. The article attests there are times when non-Indigenous input into design outcomes is not suitable. However, if non-Indigenous engagement in the design process offers benefit to Indigenous stakeholders, the International Indigenous Design Charter serves as a guiding document on the best practices to follow. There is still a concern that regardless of the extensive consultation, strong industry support and the best intentions …
