Raising Consciousness: Challenging Diversity In Christian Publishing, Michael Omari Johnson Dec 2020

Raising Consciousness: Challenging Diversity In Christian Publishing, Michael Omari Johnson

Masters Theses

The Christian publishing industry has overlooked the importance of diversity, particularly its impact on black American audiences. While studies show that diversity and inclusion can lead to more innovation through problem-solving, there persists a paradox where a lack of opportunities, disparities in wealth and employment and systemic prejudices can play a role in the ethnic and racial homogeneity of the Christian publishing industry. Thus, there are many barriers preventing people of color from emerging to the market, reflecting in the storytelling, content creation and audience of African-descent followers.

Engram, An Application Of Recording And Throwing Back Memories With Your Parents, Tong Wu Dec 2020

Engram, An Application Of Recording And Throwing Back Memories With Your Parents, Tong Wu

Theses

Adults can recall memories from the age of three. Our brains help us sort out important things for long-term memory and more trivial things for short-term memory. 1 We pull up these pieces of memory when we need them. We can remember a lot, but we also keep forgetting, forgetting details.

Therefore, humans have always had the habit of recording. Today we record our lives by posting in social media, taking photos, and so on. In most of the more modern methods, we record our life initiatively, which means we need to do something to record a piece of memory. …

Interactive Tool To Help Decidophobia People Make Decisions With Confidence, Xukang Zhang

Theses

Various internet sources estimate that we might make about 35,000 remotely conscious decisions each day. For some people, making decisions is a natural and easy thing. They can quickly weigh the pros and cons and make a choice right away. However, when we make decisions, the options are getting more and more than before. Therefore, it is more and more difficult for people to make quick choices. Suppose you are afraid of making decisions. In extreme cases, you cannot make the most straightforward decisions or depend on externalized decision processes. You might have decidophobia.

Having difficulty making decisions is a …

How Perpetrator Identity (Sometimes) Influences Media Framing Attacks As “Terrorism” Or “Mental Illness”, Allison E. Betus, Erin M. Kearns, Anthony F. Lemieux

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Do media frame attacks with Muslim perpetrators as “terrorism” and attacks with White perpetrators as the result of “mental illness”? Despite public speculation and limited academic work with relatively small subsets of cases, there have been no systematic analyses of potential biases in how media frame terrorism. We addressed this gap by examining the text of print news coverage of all terrorist attacks in the United States between 2006 and 2015. Controlling for fatalities, affiliation with a group, and existing mental illness, the odds that an article references terrorism are approximately five times greater for a Muslim versus a non-Muslim …

Social Presence In Online Counselor Education, Courtney M. Holmes, Christine Reid, Carolyn Hawley, Christopher Wagner

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Outcome research in online counselor education is lacking as is the focus on online teaching andragogy. To address this gap, the Community of Inquiry framework and social presence are discussed within the context of online learning in a counselor education program. Data were collected in a counselor education program in the mid-Atlantic comparing online and on-campus learning outcomes and perceptions of social presence in the classroom. On-campus learners had significantly higher perceptions of social presence when compared with online learners, although perceived level of social presence was not correlated with learning outcomes. Implications for counselor education are discussed.

Flow- Digital Gestural Expression, Senjal Pandharpatte

Theses

Overwhelming emotions affect the performance, productivity, and mental well-being of an individual. This has been a rising trend in highly sensitive young adults. To maintain well-being one can work towards developing emotional intelligence. With a higher emotional intelligence (EQ) the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions is better [1]. We lack an engaging way to communicate self-expression that feels in sync with us. The main problem being addressed here is to help people recognize their own emotions, by themselves, and then effectively communicate them to other people. Flow is an interactive creative outlet that allows highly …

Research And Application Of A Lightweight Real-Time Human Posture Detection Model, Hongkun Zhu, Jiawei Yin, Wenyu Feng, Hua Liang, Minrui Fei, Kun Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The traditional OpenPose model has good accuracy but slow speed in human posture detection. In order to accelerate the detection speed and reduce the model on condition of the detection precision, based on the traditional OpenPose model, the residual network with second-order term fusion is used to extract the low-level features, the weights of the trained model are pruned by the L1 norm weight, and an improved OpenPose model is proposed. Experiments show that when the detection accuracy is approximately equal to original model, the model size reduces to about 8%, the parameters reduces by nearly 83%, and the …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aiming at the of large amount of computational data and low registration efficiency in 3D cranial medical image registration, a fast registration method based on geometric feature space constraints is proposed. The algorithm extracts three-dimensional contour point clusters, and proposes a feature construction method based on the optimal fitting ring of point clusters. The feature rings and the centroids of each layer are used as feature quantities, and the fast registration is completed by using Iterative Closest Point (ICP) method. The experimental results show that the method has less computation amount, high satisfactory registration accuracy and much faster registration …

Exploring A Novel Substrate-Borne Vibratory Signal In The Wolf Spider Schizocosa Floridana, Malcolm F. Rosenthal, Eileen Hebets, Rowan H. Mcginley, Cody Raiza, James Starrett, Lin Yan, Damian O. Elias

Eileen Hebets Publications

Animals communicate using a diversity of signals produced by a wide array of physical structures. Determining how a signal is produced provides key insights into signal evolution. Here, we examine a complex vibratory mating display produced by male Schizocosa floridana wolf spiders. This display contains three discrete substrate-borne acoustic components (known as “thumps”, “taps”, and “chirps”), each of which is anecdotally associated with the movement of a different body part (the pedipalps, legs, and abdomen respectively). In order to determine the method of production, we employ a combination of high-speed video/audio recordings and SEM imaging of possible sound-producing structures. Previous …

An App With Ai Sorting Technology Designed For Lego Players To Improve Their Playing Experience Of Moc, Yiqin Zhang

Theses

As time goes, some Lego players are no longer satisfied with playing the Lego official set. I saw a comment on the internet about why Lego is so popular all over the world, it said, “I personally think that Lego, building in accordance with the instructions in the first basic gameplay, and ultimately it is necessary to reconstruct and design your own model with these basic parts. This is the ultimate charm of Lego toys.” If you played Lego long enough, you would want to jump out the instruction and challenge something different than you built before. Most Lego players …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The role of human-machine teams in society is increasing, as big data and computing power explode. One popular approach to AI is deep learning, which is useful for classification, feature identification, and predictive modeling. However, deep learning models often suffer from inadequate transparency and poor explainability. One aspect of human systems integration is the design of interfaces that support human decision-making. AI models have multiple types of uncertainty embedded, which may be difficult for users to understand. Humans that use these tools need to understand how much they should trust the AI. This study evaluates one simple approach for communicating …

Preservice English Teachers’ Evolving Conceptions Of 21st-Century Writing, Amber Jensen Oct 2020

Preservice English Teachers’ Evolving Conceptions Of 21st-Century Writing, Amber Jensen

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

This study used stimulated-recall interviews throughout four secondary English preservice teachers’ (PSTs) semester-long student teaching internships to examine how critical teaching moments shaped their evolving conceptions of 21st-century writing. The article first describes the participants’ collective definitions of features and experiences of 21st-century writing in the ELA classroom, focusing specifically on how they understood digital and multimodal composition. It then examines two case studies that demonstrate how PSTs’ teaching experiences destabilized, challenged, and contradicted their emerging definitions. Findings suggest that English educators may engage PSTs in conceptualizing nuanced and flexible 21st-century writing pedagogies as they construct field experiences as reflective …
