Professional Nurse-Led Unjani Clinics: Empowering The Nurse Entrepreneur, Bri Mcgrath Apr 2020

Professional Nurse-Led Unjani Clinics: Empowering The Nurse Entrepreneur, Bri Mcgrath

Inquiry Journal 2020

South Africa, burdened by a wide wealth gap, meets the healthcare needs of the minority with health insurance but provides unreliable services for the uninsured. The uninsured clients suffer from long public clinic wait times and poor-quality care. The Unjani model was launched to provide high-quality affordable primary health care (PHC) to employed but uninsured families. Unjani aims to empower black women nurses as entrepreneurs and providers by providing them with shipping containers converted into world-class health clinics. Although nurses are central to the Unjani model, there is no published research describing their experience. I performed a qualitative study to …

Outcome Mapping: Documenting Process In The Métis Settlements Life Skills Journey Project, Brent Hammer, Fay Fletcher, Rebecca Shortt, Mandy Macrae, Alicia Hibbert

The Qualitative Report

Mapping serves as a metaphor for where we are now, where we have been, and where we are going. In this paper the authors illustrate the use of outcome mapping as a methodological framework for documenting the planning, monitoring, and evaluation process for the Métis Settlements Life Skills Journey (MSLSJ) project. The MSLSJ is a multi-year, multi-site, multi-method research project. It is centered on building relationships and facilitating knowledge exchange between the University of Alberta team, Métis Settlement Councils and administrators, and Settlement members. We highlight how the outcome mapping framework enables us to document project processes through the identification …

The Economic Impacts Of School Closure In Rural Maine, Heather Perry

Muskie School Dissertations

The purpose of this case study research was to examine the economic impact of school closures on three rural communities in Maine. I created a conceptual framework around six healthy community economic markers. Each of the six markers are studied in 2010 when schools were closed and then again in 2016. This data, in addition to perceptions data from stakeholders in each of the three communities was studied to determine if the closure of the school had any impact on these healthy economic markers. Findings suggest that there were no negative impact to the economic markers studied within the three …

The Great Promise Of A Community-Engaged Arts Education: Analysis And Recommendations, Paul Faulkner Apr 2020

The Great Promise Of A Community-Engaged Arts Education: Analysis And Recommendations, Paul Faulkner

Community Engagement Student Work

While facing inequitable and inconsistent levels of support, K-12 arts education in the United States shows great promise in its ability to strengthen community and build social capital. Deepseated ideals of rugged individualism and cultural elitism have complicated these potential rewards as is evident through a brief history of policies impacting arts education across various levels of government. Particular challenges related to access and funding have prevented all schools from offering a quality arts education that is able to incorporate students’ lived experience into the curriculum. Theories of democratic education, critical pedagogy, community cultural development, and creative placemaking are introduced …

15th Ward North, Baxter Hankin

Architecture Senior Theses

THIS THESIS ARGUES IN FAVOR OF WALKABILITY AT THE SCALE OF THE CITY, NEIGHBORHOOD, BLOCK, STREET, SPACE, BUILDING, AND DETAIL. WALKABILITY IS A CONDITION THAT ALLOWS FOR INTERESTING AND USEFUL WALKS ON A DAILY BASIS. THIS IS CREATED FROM A MIX OF STRATEGIC, PLANNED CIVIC CONDITIONS, AND AN URBAN FABRIC OF UNPLANNED, FINE-GRAINED, BOTTOM-UP DEVELOPMENTS. THE WALKABLE CITY IS NECESSARY IN TERMS OF HUMAN EXPERIENCE, SUSTAINABILITY, AND CONNECTIVITY. THE INTERESTING ASPECT OF THE WALK IS DETERMINED BY PARALLAX AND THE PICTURESQUE. PARALLAX IS THE “DISPLACEMENT OF THE APPARENT POSITION OF A BODY DUE TO A CHANGE OF POSITION OF THE …

Environmental Justice In Little Village: A Case For Reforming Chicago’S Zoning Law, Charles Isaacs Apr 2020

Environmental Justice In Little Village: A Case For Reforming Chicago’S Zoning Law, Charles Isaacs

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Chicago’s Little Village community bears the heavy burden of environmental injustice and racism. The residents are mostly immigrants and people of color who live with low levels of income, limited access to healthcare, and disproportionate levels of dangerous air pollution. Before its retirement, Little Village’s Crawford coal-burning power plant was the lead source of air pollution, contributing to 41 deaths, 550 emergency room visits, and 2,800 asthma attacks per year. After the plant’s retirement, community members wanted a say on the future use of the lot, only to be closed out when a corporation, Hilco Redevelopment Partners, bought the lot …

Community Land Trusts: Institutionalizing The Human Flourishing Theory Of Property, John A. Lovett Apr 2020

Community Land Trusts: Institutionalizing The Human Flourishing Theory Of Property, John A. Lovett

Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy

Greg Alexander has made a powerful case that an owner of property in a free and democratic society will be required from time to time to provide resources, in ways appropriate to that owner, to support the development of other persons' human capabilities. In this essay, I focus attention on legal relationships epitomizing Alexander's human flourishing theory that owe their genesis in the collaborative work of community activists, who often began their efforts from positions of devout religious conviction, and public-spirited transactional lawyers. The product of that work is the property law institution known as the Community Land Trust (CLT).

Resolving Complex Community Problems: Applying Collective Leadership And Kotter's Change Model To Wicked Problems Within Social System Networks, Johnette (Jay) Caulfield, Elizabeth F. Brenner Apr 2020

Resolving Complex Community Problems: Applying Collective Leadership And Kotter's Change Model To Wicked Problems Within Social System Networks, Johnette (Jay) Caulfield, Elizabeth F. Brenner

Management Faculty Research and Publications

How does collective leadership within social networks resolve chronic and complex problems common to communities? Unfortunately, sometimes it does not, but when it does, the outcome may be truly extraordinary. We use a case study approach to explain how one Midwest community within the USA applied collective leadership within a community network to reduce teen births. It took ten years of what many identified as provocative media campaigns and comprehensive sex education programs to reduce teen births by 65%, significantly exceeding the stated goal. Using Kotter's change model as a backdrop, powerful strategies and provocative creativity reveal courageous leadership within …

The Future Of Urbanization And Climate Change, April 2020, Makeyla Hayes Apr 2020

The Future Of Urbanization And Climate Change, April 2020, Makeyla Hayes

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health

Urbanization is an inevitable process that affects all countries and major cities. As societies continue to adapt to urban development, the environment is left defenseless to these changes. Through environmental, economical, and social analysis, this case study of Boston – the capital city of Massachusetts – examines the impact of urban growth and development on climate change. Urban areas are densely populated and constantly experience population growth and overpopulation, making them more vulnerable to climate change. Unsustainable practices and living increases the impact that communities and residents have on the environment. Environmental gentrification has been implemented to resolve the consequences …

The Real Id Act: Real Consequences Involving Immigration Status & Eligibility Requirement Concerns For Immigrants, Rachael Marvin Apr 2020

The Real Id Act: Real Consequences Involving Immigration Status & Eligibility Requirement Concerns For Immigrants, Rachael Marvin

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The REAL ID Act of 2005 imposes federal documentation standards for state-issued drivers' licenses, requiring proof of lawful immigration status, which critics argue burdens immigrants and heightens government scrutiny. The Act raises constitutional concerns, including Fourth Amendment violations and interference with the fundamental right to travel, as established in Saenz v. Roe. While the Supreme Court in Arizona v. United States upheld federal preemption over state licensing authority, the Act's implementation has disproportionately affected immigrants, particularly under the Trump administration, which revived its enforcement. The article critiques the Act as an unconstitutional tool for immigration enforcement, undermining civil liberties …

The Impact Of Pocket Parks To Enhance Public Space And Realm In Ajman, Uae, Manal Abdalla Al Shamsi

Theses

Green spaces in urban life play an important role in maintaining healthy lifestyle and providing a calm and peaceful place for roaming around. Large new urban park projects are gradually decreasing in dense cities, and small green spaces like pocket parks are likely to become more important. However previous studies showed that multiple research studies on small urban green spaces have been conducted. On infill sites and other overlooked city corners, pocket parks are created. Apart from the obvious benefits of the ecosystem and the environment, they can be a small but important step towards a fair architecture. The project …

The Role Of The School Administrator In Implementing Communities Of Practice To Build Organizational Capacity, Kara L. Plank

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

The field of education is constantly changing and requires a significant shift in teacher practice. Despite the demands for ongoing professional learning and collaboration, teachers remain resistant to the transition from an autonomous position. Professional learning communities, a particular type of communities of practice, are a common practice for schools to implement with a goal of improving student performance. Despite attempts, this concept proves to be very difficult to implement. The purpose of this study was to examine the nature of existing professional learning communities within the school setting. In addition, this study sought to understand the role of school …

The report begins by providing some context as to what renewable energy is and explains why it is a favorable energy choice. The first section outlines the energy industry and deciphers between the two forms of energy currently making up the sector. Breaking up the industry into two separate sectors, being renewable energy and nonrenewable energy, provides an understanding on which form is currently dominating the market. Moreover, the outline describes the concept of investing …

Preventing Bankruptcy And Transforming City Finances After Hurricane Katrina, Andy Kopplin Mar 2020

Preventing Bankruptcy And Transforming City Finances After Hurricane Katrina, Andy Kopplin

New England Journal of Public Policy

In 2010, when the Landrieu administration took office in New Orleans, we inherited a financial situation that the mayor compared to the massive oil spill occurring at that very time in the Gulf, the worst in US history. The city was nearly bankrupt. Much of what we faced was the result of factors—Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the subsequent failure of the federal levees, the great recession—that were far from the prior administration of Mayor Ray Nagin’s control. Much was the result of a culture of ineffectiveness and inefficiency that predated his administration. But much was the result of gross mismanagement …

The burning of Black churches motivated by racial hatred has an extensive history in America that persists. Drawing largely from primary resources, the dissertation analyzes the resurgence of Black church fires during both terms of President Barack Obama, the first Black president of the United States. The definition of heritage terrorism is applied to churches intentionally burned, particularly the arsons motivated by hatred. The study examines specific arson cases and explains the implications burnings have on the tangible and intangible heritage of communities impacted. Lastly, the study highlights the courage and resilience of communities that rebuilt in the aftermath of …

Henry, Thandiwe Ngoma, Jeanette L. Kaiser, Rachel M. Fong, Taryn Vian, Davidson H. Hamer, Peter C. Rockers, Godfrey Biemba, Nancy A. Scott

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

Background: In low-income countries such as Zambia, where maternal mortality rates are persistently high, maternity waiting homes (MWHs) represent one potential strategy to improve access to safe delivery, especially for women living in remote areas. The Maternity Homes Access in Zambia project (MAHMAZ) is evaluating the impact of a MWH model on women’s access to safe delivery in rural Zambia. There is a growing need to understand not only the effectiveness of interventions but also the effectiveness of their implementation in order to appropriately interpret outcomes. There is little evidence to guide effective implementation of MWH for both immediate uptake …

Peace Connector Projects: Bishop Korir's Strategy For Grassroots Peacebuilding, William Kiptoo

The Journal of Social Encounters

This essay is a narration of my personal experiences in peacebuilding in the North Rift region of Kenya as a resident of the region, and peace worker from 1995 to date. I draw from my work experiences with the National Council of Churches of Kenya (1995-2005), Catholic Relief Services and the Mennonite Central Committee (2007-2019). Specifically, how connector projects were used as a strategy for grassroots peacebuilding for the conflict-affected communities in the North Rift Valley region. The processes of mobilizing the communities, challenges, and outcomes of reconciliation efforts are discussed. The four connector projects discussed show the rewards attained …
