Institutional Logic Multiplicity Among Ncaa Division I Student Athletes And Their Respective Institutions, Jay Martyn, Peyton J. Stensland, Dominique C. Kropp, Brent D. Oja, Jordan R. Bass
Institutional Logic Multiplicity Among Ncaa Division I Student Athletes And Their Respective Institutions, Jay Martyn, Peyton J. Stensland, Dominique C. Kropp, Brent D. Oja, Jordan R. Bass
Global Sport Business Journal
Institutional logics, proposed by Thornton, Ocasio, and Lounsbury (2012), provides a construct to evaluate how institutional actors are influenced by, create, and modify various beliefs, values, and expectations in their respective environments. Within the context of NCAA Division I athletics, it is possible that multiple logics may exist, resulting in logic multiplicity. The purpose of the study, framed by Besharov and Smith’s (2014) work regarding logic heterogeneity and multiplicity, was to explore the institutional logics perceived and managed by NCAA Division I student athletes. Interviews with 12 student athletes were conducted, transcribed, and coded. Results indicated, Division I student athletes …
Social Justice And Liturgical Practice: Engaging The Earth/ Cultivating Solidarity, Daniel O'Dea Bradley
Social Justice And Liturgical Practice: Engaging The Earth/ Cultivating Solidarity, Daniel O'Dea Bradley
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
In North America, across the political spectrum, we have a strong tendency to reduce religion to nothing more than a tool to promote our own socio-political views. Tis is a natural consequence of our hyper-polarized culture and our impoverished view of “religion.” It is also, however, a problem—particularly for those inspired by the call to renewal through an integration of the quest for social justice and the pursuit of the spiritual life. By focusing on the value of participating in religious liturgy, I show how a renewed respect for religion can help the proponents of social justice fulfill some of …
Covid-19 Safety Protocols And Procedures Designed For Minimizing Trauma In School-Age Children, Thomas Stacy Helton
Covid-19 Safety Protocols And Procedures Designed For Minimizing Trauma In School-Age Children, Thomas Stacy Helton
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
When COVID-19 arrived in the United States in March of 2020, most of the country was unprepared for the virus's severe nature. A collective mental state seized the public with a hard-to-fathom health emergency that bewildered most adults who have not witnessed during their lifetime. The closest parallels would be the HIV/AIDS pandemic that became embedded in the cultural mindset of 1985; however, once scientists and researchers identified the medical realities of HIV/AIDS, they could educate the populace with appropriate prevention mandates. With rare exceptions, this was not a disease that touched children, except a schoolyard taunt in the years …

Exploring Referee Abuse Through The Lens Of The Collegiate Rugby Coach, B. L. Jacobs, Jacob K. Tingle, B. D. Oja, M. A. Smith
School of Business Faculty Research
Referees are valuable contributors to the legitimacy of a sporting contest. Despite this, abuse in sport has become a growing concern and is regularly noted as an obstacle with which referees must contend. Continued abuses have been associated with referee discontinuation and have been noted as a detrimental influence in the recruitment and retention of referees. Sporting organizations, coaches, and players all feel the impact when there is an inadequate supply of referees. Coaches have been noted as a primary perpetrator of referee abuse; thus, in this study, the authors utilize a phenomenological approach to explore perceptions of referee abuse …

Instant Replay In The National Basketball Association, Jacob K. Tingle
School of Business Faculty Research
In this chapter the use of instant replay in the National Basketball Association (NBA) is described. After detailing the historical evolution of replay in the NBA, the chapter explores the impact of legal and illegal gambling on the expanded use of replay, followed by a section on media perceptions, an explanation of real or perceived bias amongst NBA referees, and concludes with a description of the NBA Replay Center. Similar to the National Football League, the NBA has utilized some form of replay technology for multiple decades, and how the league approaches the use of video technology to train and …
Prevalence Of Left-Handedness In China 2011: Small-Area Estimates, Hongwei Xu
Prevalence Of Left-Handedness In China 2011: Small-Area Estimates, Hongwei Xu
Publications and Research
Nationally representative survey data and small-area estimation techniques are used to assess the geographic prevalence of left-handedness in China 2011. Measures of individuals’ handedness are their self-reported dominant hand and their hand grip strength, which yield four estimates of left-handed prevalence, and these statistics are recorded at the provincial level. These estimates concord with one another. There are several geographic clusters of high-prevalence rates of left-handers located in ethnic minority-designated autonomous areas or historically revolutionary base areas, which may reflect a deep-rooted sense of defiance to authorities and promote such cultural values as individual autonomy and equality among local people.
Reducing Distance Through Online International Collaboration, Brooke R. Schreiber, Mihiri Jansz
Reducing Distance Through Online International Collaboration, Brooke R. Schreiber, Mihiri Jansz
Publications and Research
Online and hybrid courses offer many benefits for ESL teacher education, but can be hampered by ‘transactional distance’, a lack of interpersonal closeness which can cause misunderstanding and disengagement. This article describes a pedagogical project in which in-service teachers studying in a distance-learning MA TESL programme in Sri Lanka participated in an asynchronous discussion forum with peers from a university in New York City to discuss varieties of World Englishes. The project increased dialogue between learners, and between learners and the instructor, providing space for informal interactions through text, images, and video, as well as multiple methods for responding to …

'We Were Hoping': The Emmaus Road Encounter As A Novel Approach To Faith-Science Dialogue, Harold A. Laurence V
'We Were Hoping': The Emmaus Road Encounter As A Novel Approach To Faith-Science Dialogue, Harold A. Laurence V
Seattle Pacific Seminary Theses
This thesis proposes a novel paradigm for faith-science dialogue, drawing a Biblical analogy between two disciples’ Emmaus Road encounter with the risen Jesus (Luke 24:13-35) and contemporary faithful scientists wrestling with narrative conflict between the findings of science and the confession of faith. For science’s reading public, science serves as an alternative mythmaking discourse, whose narratives may indeed conflict with faith. This thesis proposes that theology ought to deploy Biblical preaching to resolve such narrative conflicts. To guide this process, this thesis proposes that Jesus’ two responses to the troubles of the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) …
Connections: Social Media And Parents Raising Children With Profound Multiple Disabilities, Amy Ann Terra
Connections: Social Media And Parents Raising Children With Profound Multiple Disabilities, Amy Ann Terra
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Parenting plays an important role in many adult lives. Parenting a child with profound multiple disabilities results in a distinct parenting experience. This qualitative phenomenological study examined the role of social media in the lives of parents raising children with profound multiple disabilities. Five parents raising children with profound multiple disabilities were interviewed, and resulting themes were identified.
Consistent with previous research, parents described the initial adaptation to their child’s disability-related needs as the most challenging period of their parenting to date. Adaptation was followed by an acclimation to a new normal of their parenting experience. Parents described moving from …

Rising Above The Adobe Ceiling: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study Of Mentoring And Social Capital Influences Among California Latina Nonprofit Leaders, Belinda Hernandez
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Empirical research studies that focus on the experiences of Latinas in executive leadership are limited. In its entirety, workforce research has overlooked how social and cultural experiences influence this group’s leadership development. This gap in research has failed to uplift the Latina executive voice and their achievements. Addressing this gap has the potential to influence distinctive workforce practices and future scholarship. Utilizing an asset-based perspective, this study presents counter narratives that intentionally focus on exploring Latina leaders’ voices. The importance of intersectional experience and social identities illustrate non-monolithic, yet aligned, experiences among study participants.
This foundational dissertation explored mentoring phenomena …
Literary Festival Participation And The Development Of Cultural Capital: An Analysis Of One Irish And One Italian Case, Giulia Rossetti
Literary Festival Participation And The Development Of Cultural Capital: An Analysis Of One Irish And One Italian Case, Giulia Rossetti
Doctoral
Literary festivals are an increasingly significant component of cultural participation nowadays, yet scholars ask for more research on the cultural benefits gained through festival participation. This study uses Bourdieu’s ideas about cultural capital and Stebbins’ serious leisure perspective to understand if, and how, literary festival participation shapes individual cultural capital. Empirically, the study takes an interpretivist stance and is a qualitative case study of one Irish and one Italian literary festival. The data gathered derive from key informant interviews (n = 4), participant observations, and on-site interviews (n = 92) and follow-up interviews (n = 34) with festival participants. Findings …

Inside Outside: The Cultural Paradox Of Salvation Army Brass Bands In America During The Age Of Nationalism, Nathan Miller
Inside Outside: The Cultural Paradox Of Salvation Army Brass Bands In America During The Age Of Nationalism, Nathan Miller
Theses and Dissertations--Music
By the turn of the twentieth century, the sight and sound of a little brass band of uniformed evangelists on street corners declaring war on sin became ubiquitous in American cities. Although Salvationists came to hold a cherished place in society, Americans greeted their initial invasion with contempt. They came with a message of transformative redemption for the poor and disenfranchised, loudly declaring that anyone and anything could be made holy and fit for God’s Salvation Army. This included minstrel tunes and other rough musics appropriated from the working-class Americans. However, eventually their music had less in common with poor …

The Never-Ending Sentence: An Examination Of Policies And Programs Targeting Post-Secondary Education Among Currently And Formerly Incarcerated Individuals, Julianne Shumake
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Education serves as potentially the greatest instrument of change and self-improvement within the modern society. With higher education comes a variety of skills and opportunities that foster success within the modern world including lucrative employment, personal growth in relation to skills and knowledge, as well improved mental health, and sense of belonging (Runnel, 2015). Unfortunately, the university system within the United States is designed to exclude a large population of people, those with a felony convictions. As of 2019, the United States has an estimated 24 million individuals with a felony status on their records (Eberstadt, 2019). For these 24 …

Zappa’S Remembrance Of A Forgotten Style: The Relationship Between Frank Zappa And Doo-Wop As Illustrated In Cruising With Ruben & The Jets, Benjamin Adamo
Theses and Dissertations--Music
One of Zappa’s many cherished styles of music was the doo-wop of the mid-1950s through the early 1960s. His love for the style culminated in 1968 with a poor-selling and often forgotten doo-wop record, Cruising with Ruben & The Jets. While the record earned little praise from critics and fans, Zappa considered it as a landmark of his early career, as evidenced in his autobiography. This thesis investigates Zappa’s relationship to doo-wop and “perversion” of the style as it culminated in Cruising.
As revealed through autobiographical entries and interviews with Zappa, Ray Collins, and other collaborators, Zappa devised …

Diachronic Analysis Of Stance Markers In Research Articles’ Discussion Sections, Davud Kuhi, Shirin Rezaei
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
It is now increasingly accepted that metadiscourse as one of the significant rhetorical features of research articles is context-sensitive and subject to change in response to the historically developing practices of academic communities. Motivated by such an understanding, the current research drew on a corpus of 914679 words taken from three leading journals of applied linguistics in order to trace the diachronic evolution of stance markers in discussion sections of research articles from 1996 to 2016. The analysis revealed a substantial decline in the overall frequency of stance markers in discussion section, with devices in all categories, except self-mention which …

From Service Role To Partnership: Faculty Voices On Collaboration With Librarians, Maria A. Perez-Stable, Judith M. Arnold, Lumarie Guth, Patricia F. Vander Meer
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Librarians at two research universities surveyed faculty practices and views about collaboration with librarians to gain insight into likely partners and strategies for information literacy (IL) instruction. Quantitative data on methods of collaboration revealed the most often-practiced method of working together was having a librarian deliver an instruction session, followed by developing an online course guide. Statistical differences by disciplinary area and years teaching were examined; experienced faculty reported a greater range of collaboration methods. Thematic analysis of open-ended responses on motives for collaboration, a factor less frequently studied, found the top reason was to improve student IL skills, followed …

Based on Romeo and Juliet and a 1901 awit adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, the theater production Sintang Dalisay deploys, as its movement motif, the igal, a dance tradition of the Sama Bajau of the southern Philippines. The use of the motif influences other elements in the production, specifically, the music, the decision to set the play in a Muslim community, the set and costume designs, and the change of the characters’ names into more local appellations. The localized production adopts a collaborative intercultural approach to theater-making, with Muslim and Christian artists working together to teach the dance to performers, help …

Consumer Bankruptcy Should Be Increasingly Irrelevant—Why Isn’T It?, Pamela Foohey
Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal
Professor Pamela Foohey responds to Professor Martin’s argument by pointing out a number of important reasons why consumer bankruptcy remains relevant. Moreover, the author argues that some of these reasons suggest that it is more relevant than ever. This Article overviews the place consumer bankruptcy presently occupies in the United States. In doing so, Foohey details why consumer bankruptcy remains relevant in the face of a socio-economic structure and of laws that suggest that bankruptcy may not be a particularly useful place for struggling Americans to turn to for help. Foohey argues it is the time for bigger changes to …

Increasing students’ involvement on campus is one of the best practices to increase college student retention. Using data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002, this study investigated the relationships between first-to-second fall retention and student involvement indicators. Logistic regression analysis was employed to explore the relationships. The sample included 6,283 first-time, first-year undergraduate students who were enrolled in public or not-for-profit private four-year postsecondary institutions across the country in the fall of 2004. Results show that student-advisor interaction, student-faculty interaction, extracurricular activities participation, and library utilization were positively associated with first-to-second fall retention. Recommendations for future research and implications …

Fundamental to the hypothesis-driven approach to assessing the special-education (SPED) needs of English learners (ELs) is the awareness that behaviors often exhibited by ELs may mirror indicators of learning disabilities (e.g., difficulty comprehending text, difficulty following directions, lack of appropriate classroom behavior, lack of attention). We surveyed 330 school professionals to examine their perceptions about four mirrored behaviors displayed by ELs during instruction, as indicators of either a second-language difficulty or a learning disability. Only 31% of the respondents correctly indicated that none of the behaviors can distinguish these two possibilities. The probability of correct assessment was positively associated with …

This research develops a novel theory for domestic diversionary violence, contending that the main drivers for this type of conflict are the specific characteristics of state-targeted domestic minority groups. Seven new variables measuring minority group characteristics are identified through a case study of the Kurdish minority in the Turkish Republic, then applied to a quantitative analysis of domestic diversionary violence in a dataset of 284 observations across 117 countries during the years 2004-2005, utilizing data from the University of Maryland’s Minorities at Risk Project, the University of Illinois Cline Center SPEED Database, and World Bank. A proportional odds logistic regression …
