Seeing And Responding: How Students Perceive School Personnel To Fail To Respond To Bullying, Ethan M. Higgins, Benjamin W. Fisher, Maury Nation

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Although research has shown that students and school personnel believe that adults respond to bullying at different rates, it is unclear why these differences occur. Using open-ended survey responses from 189 students, this study investigates why students perceive that school personnel fail to respond to bullying. Students articulated a variety of reasons for school personnel’s lack of response, including ways in which they could fail to see, notice, or respond to the bullying. In turn, students used their agency to understand and counteract school personnel’s lack of response. Theoretical and policy implications are discussed."

Disparity In Context: Judges’ Perspectives On Disparities In A Sentencing Guideline System, Justin M. Smith Dec 2020

Disparity In Context: Judges’ Perspectives On Disparities In A Sentencing Guideline System, Justin M. Smith

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Unwarranted disparity in sentencing continues to be a problem in criminal courts. Sentencing, a final step in the multi-stage process of criminal justice, is seen as such an important component of ensuring consistency that legislative policy has created guidelines to control judicial decision-making. Nonetheless, research shows that disparity under sentencing guidelines persists due to influences external to the law - referred to as substantive rationality. Sentencing research overwhelmingly utilizes quantitative analysis of official court data to produce its conclusions about the influences of disparity. The current study builds upon past research by using qualitative analysis of interviews with 20 judges …

Social Exchange And The Formation Of Prison Visitation Communities, Adam Trahan, Douglas Evans Dec 2020

Social Exchange And The Formation Of Prison Visitation Communities, Adam Trahan, Douglas Evans

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Family members and significant others of incarcerated individuals suffer when their loved ones are incarcerated. The loss of a parent, sibling, child, spouse, or partner to incarceration can be painful. If they wish to stay physically connected to an incarcerated individual, visitation is their only recourse. Visiting a prison can be costly in terms of the amount of time it takes to travel to the facility, the total expenses incurred during travel, and the socio-emotional effects of limited contact. On top of these costs, visitation can be an intricate process to navigate due to the multitude of facility rules and …

Perceptions Of Rehabilitative Change Among Incarcerated Persons Enrolled In A Prison-Equine Program (Pep), Joyce A. Arditti, Amy A. Morgan, Sara Spiers, Virginia Buechner-Maxwell, Vicky Shivy Dec 2020

Perceptions Of Rehabilitative Change Among Incarcerated Persons Enrolled In A Prison-Equine Program (Pep), Joyce A. Arditti, Amy A. Morgan, Sara Spiers, Virginia Buechner-Maxwell, Vicky Shivy

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Guided by a grounded theory methodology, the authors propose a theory of rehabilitation for incarcerated persons within a prison equine program (PEP). Interviews with ten incarcerated men yielded a grounded theory of rehabilitative change centered around the importance of relationships with program staff and horses, and the uniqueness of the barn-equine environment in promoting safe attachments and positive views of self. Special emphasis is placed on the development of secure reparative attachments between men and their horses grounded in acceptance and mutual empathy, as well as the development of redemptive identities whereby participants viewed themselves as having purpose and value …

Wandering Jews: Global Jewish Migration, Steven J. Gold Dec 2020

Wandering Jews: Global Jewish Migration, Steven J. Gold

The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review

Despite the importance of historical and contemporary migration to the American Jewish community, popular awareness of the diversity and complexity of the American Jewish migration legacy is limited and largely focused upon Yiddish-speaking Jews who left the Pale of Settlement in Eastern Europe between 1880 and 1920 to settle in eastern and midwestern cities.

Wandering Jews provides readers with a broader understanding of the Jewish experience of migration in the United States and elsewhere. It describes the record of a wide variety of Jewish migrant groups, including those encountering different locations of settlement, historical periods, and facets of the migration …

Mobility Justice And Social Capital In Strawberry Mansion And Kensington, Philadelphia Pa, Rebecca Fruehwald Dec 2020

Mobility Justice And Social Capital In Strawberry Mansion And Kensington, Philadelphia Pa, Rebecca Fruehwald

Masters Theses

This thesis explores the theoretical and practical relationship between mobility justice and social capital. A literature review establishes the theoretical relationship through an overview of history and policy. The relationship is then explored through a case study of Strawberry Mansion and Kensington neighborhoods in Philadelphia. These sections are then connected by considering how they are both impacted by the larger system of capitalism. The real-world example of gentrification is given for how all these elements interact and affect each other, and the practical relationship between mobility justice and social capital is established. Finally, policy implementations and paths for possible future …

Working Paper No. 46, Foundations For Feminist Legal Theory, Taylor Feltham Dec 2020

Working Paper No. 46, Foundations For Feminist Legal Theory, Taylor Feltham

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish the foundations for Feminist Legal Theory through considering its three important dimensions. These dimensions are: a) a distinct and unique historical background; b) an ongoing legacy of occupational segregation; and c) a persistence of gender inequality. This inquiry relies heavily upon Feminist Legal Theory: A Primer (2016) authored by Nancy Levit, et al. Since the emergence of the area of inquiry known as “critical race feminism,” feminist legal theory has been moving away from the principle of formal equality and towards intersectional equity. Feminist legal theorists like Angela Harris (1990), in her work Race and …

Working Paper No. 47, The Transformation Of Developmental States: Patterns Of Economic Development In South Korea And Taiwan, Mina Kim Dec 2020

Working Paper No. 47, The Transformation Of Developmental States: Patterns Of Economic Development In South Korea And Taiwan, Mina Kim

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry considers similar yet contrasting patterns in the economic development of South Korea and Taiwan. Taiwan’s developmental state has tended to exhibit ‘softer’ characteristics than South Korea’s. I identify a tendency for when developmental states face crises and then transition forward to a ‘post-developmental state’. This is traced to the internal 'paradox of success' and external pressure of neoliberal globalization. Though these two countries tend to embrace and rely upon neoliberal policies for economic growth, the speed and degree of systemic change register as different. A 1997 financial crisis appears to have goaded South Korea to move quickly through …

Women Work In Coffee Shops And Night Cafes (Evidence Of Attraction And Exortion) ((A Field Study In Baghdad)), Widyan Yaseen

Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences

For years, most of the known Iraqi cafes were male-dependent in the service of their customers. And the precence of a woman im any café raised more than a question mark, because of the nature of Iraqi society that reserved women’s work in men’s fields. Today, however, the situation has changed with the presence of women, most of whom are underage, and that has angered many. The number of cafes and cafeterias increased in Baghdad where they offer a variety of juices, drinks, shisha, and some snacks. From the other side, the phenomenon of young girls working in bars has …

A Hierarchy Of Environmental Design For Latin* Men At Pwis, Hermen Díaz Iii

New York Journal of Student Affairs

To understand the transaction between the environment and students, this study examines a Latin* cultural center in facilitating community and sense of belonging for Latino men at a predominantly White institution (PWI). This study used critical race theory, specifically LatCrit to interrogate Strange and Banning’s (2015) hierarchy of environmental design. Findings nuanced the understanding and experience of community, engagement and safety of Latino men within a racialized space at a PWI. Implications for practice are discussed to better understand how Latin* cultural center environments contribute to the behavior and experience of Latino men.

The Causes, Contributors, And Consequences Of Colorism Among Various Cultures, Mahima Rahman Dec 2020

The Causes, Contributors, And Consequences Of Colorism Among Various Cultures, Mahima Rahman

Honors College Theses

Along with issues like racism, sexism, and classism, colorism exists and works alongside these other “-isms” to dehumanize people with darker skin all around the world. To tackle the problem of colorism and have people unlearn it, a deeper analysis needs to be done of how it originated, how it continues to be perpetuated, and what its effects are. The causes, contributors, and consequences of colorism share similarities and vary across different cultures. This literature review will examine the three aspects of colorism mentioned within five different cultures: South Asian, Western, East Asian, Latino, and Caribbean culture. After examining previous …

Corporations And The American Polity, Patrick Labossiere Dec 2020

Corporations And The American Polity, Patrick Labossiere

Student Theses and Dissertations

Research on corporate communications’ effects on politics presents an acknowledgement of a relationship between the two topics, leaving a void in the explanation and examination of this topic. The void presents an opening to introduce a conceptual process for how corporations are able to craft communications to influence the American Polity, the democratic social organization within the United States. This research begins with a historical review of how corporations gain prominence in American society, capturing the ability to participate in the democratic social organization of the polity. A qualitative analysis of several conceptual frameworks serves as data, to establish an …

Cardiorespiratory And Metabolic Responses To Hexagonal Barbell Deadlift Task Performed At An Intensity Corresponding To The Anaerobic Threshold, Christopher C. Frankel Dr.

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The objectives of this study were to identify the lactate threshold (LT) and the first ventilatory threshold (VT) during resistance exercise in a discontinuous incremental test, determine if both thresholds were observed at the same relative workload, and to analyze the acute cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses during a separate constant load resistance exercise protocol. Twelve healthy, trained women (n = 6) and men (n = 6) performed a maximal running test on a treadmill followed by three protocols using the hexagonal bar deadlift (HBDL) exercise. The treadmill test was performed to determine maximal oxygen consumption, peak heart rate, and lactate …

Race, Income, Or School Quality? Determining The Most Influential Factor In High School Graduation Rates In Times Of Economic Hardship, Elsa Wilson Dec 2020

Race, Income, Or School Quality? Determining The Most Influential Factor In High School Graduation Rates In Times Of Economic Hardship, Elsa Wilson

Honors Thesis

After the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case in 1954, it would make sense to assume that Black students and white students would have equal access to the same levels of educational attainment. However, research shows that Black students still graduate high school at disproportionate levels as compared to their white counterparts. This paper analyzes this issue of education inequality specifically through the lens of times of economic hardship to determine whether or not Black students experience disproportionately lower levels of educational attainment during times of economic downturn. I respond to this issue by using data from …
