S-21 As A Liminal Power Regime: Violently Othering Khmer Bodies Into Vietnamese Minds, Daniel Bultmann Dec 2020

S-21 As A Liminal Power Regime: Violently Othering Khmer Bodies Into Vietnamese Minds, Daniel Bultmann

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The article analyzes the structure, scripts, and procedural logics behind the violent practices in S-21, the central prison of the Khmer Rouge, as a liminal power regime. The institution’s violent practices and operations served to reveal a “Vietnameseness” and/or otherness within the victims and to prove not only their guilt regarding a singular crime but also a long history of treason and collaboration with the Vietnamese, as well as a moral shortcoming that put them outside their own imagined Khmer moral universe and made them part of a larger scheme. The initial and—for the ideology of the revolution—problematic sameness of …

Democratization As A Protective Layering For Crimes Against Humanity: The Case Of Myanmar, Anna B. Plunkett Dec 2020

Democratization As A Protective Layering For Crimes Against Humanity: The Case Of Myanmar, Anna B. Plunkett

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Myanmar has a history of state sanctioned violence against its own people. However, as the regime transition occurs the methods of conducting such violence have also changed. This has not led to an end to violence but an alteration in the methods used by the state. What can be identified is the use of democratic regime transition to legitimise the state’s actions whilst delegitimising the plight of communities that have historically resisted the state. By engaging in the minimal standards of democratic practice whilst developing relations with the international community on the basis of trade, Myanmar has been able to …

A Queer(Er) Genocide Studies, Lily Nellans

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This paper examines how queerness interacts with and is implicated in traditional genocides, i.e. those directed at racial, religious, national, and ethnic groups - the groups defined as protected classes in the Genocide Convention. It poses the following question: How can scholars of Genocide Studies learn from the queer theory-Genocide Studies nexus? To answer, this paper demonstrate how three distinct queer theory concepts can be woven with Genocide Studies to reveal novel insights into some of the field’s preeminent questions. Specifically, it draws on queer intellectual curiosity, heteronormativity, and reproductive futurism. Connecting queer theory with Genocide Studies yields empirical, analytical, …

Ethical Concerns Of Paying Cash To Vulnerable Participants: The Qualitative Researchers’ Views, Adrianna Surmiak Dr Dec 2020

Ethical Concerns Of Paying Cash To Vulnerable Participants: The Qualitative Researchers’ Views, Adrianna Surmiak Dr

The Qualitative Report

The aim of the paper is to discuss the ethical issues related to financial payments. The article compares the concerns and experiences of researchers who did not pay the participants with the concerns and experiences of researchers who paid the participants. It draws on in-depth interviews with Polish social researchers who conducted qualitative research with vulnerable participants. The paper indicates that researchers who did not pay the participants believed that financial payment reduces the researcher’s relationship with informants to an economic transaction. For this reason, they had more ethical concerns about paying than researchers who did pay. My interviewees suggest …

Towards Culture-Oriented Medical Philosophy, Education, Research And Practice, Nasser H. Al-Azri

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Medicine is a sociotechnical system wherein culture manifests itself in all its aspects. Culture, however, is often intangible and is frequently neglected in formal healthcare education, research and practice. This sounding board article attempts to generate interest in making culture a serious component of healthcare systems at different levels, including its founding philosophical underpinnings, educational systems, research activities and clinical practice. It is recommended that a framework of culture-oriented medical philosophy, education, research and practice be implemented. Each component of this framework is briefly discussed in relation to healthcare. Culture should be reflected explicitly in healthcare through research activities, medical …

Literature Review Of The Relationship Between Illness Identity And Recovery Outcomes Among Adults With Severe Mental Illness, Veronica W. Wanyee, Dr. Josephine Arasa

Modern Psychological Studies

This paper is a literature review of the relationship between illness identity and recovery outcomes among adults with severe mental illness. First, illness identity is explored as presented in the literature, through analysis of work on narrativization, labeling theory and the role of gender stereotypes. Literature on stigmatization as a mediating factor that influences the ways illness identity impacts recovery is also studied. Finally, work is presented on recovery outcomes that are a direct result of self-perception. Findings suggest the existence of two paradigms; positive and negative illness identity as the result of mediating factors from the diagnosis stage. A …

An Ecological Approach To Improving Reentry Programs For Justice-Involved African American Men, Precious Skinner-Osei, Peter Claudius Osei

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This article is a re-analysis of a previous study (please see https://doi.org/10.1080/10911359.2017.1402724). Considering the previous findings, in addition to the recent discussions around criminal justice reform, race, policing, and mental health in the United States, the data were reanalyzed using an updated version of QSR NVivo. The new findings revealed that reintegrating justice-involved African American men back into society requires reentry programs to utilize a different approach. Reentry programs must be constructed under the notion that the process involves multiple interrelated components that interact with larger systems outside the individual or organization's immediate control or organization advocating for them. …

Microfísicas De La Vida Queer: Sexualidad Y Fe En Intersección, Hugo Córdova Quero, Jorge A. Aquino Ph.D.

Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer

This third issue of the Queer Connection: Latin American and Caribbean Journal of Queer Theologies focuses on advancing both the state of the art of queer theories, theologies, and pastorals, as well as the possibilities of future perspectives. The importance of the "religious" in the contributions of this issue bases on the need to connect with elements that make up everyday life - spirituality, rituals, practices, discourses, among others - that are often "excluded" from the discussions about what is queer in Latin America and the Caribbean.

A Conceptual Model Evaluation Framework For Adaptive Governance And Adaptive Management In Large-Scale Restoration Programs, Chadwin Smith Dec 2020

A Conceptual Model Evaluation Framework For Adaptive Governance And Adaptive Management In Large-Scale Restoration Programs, Chadwin Smith

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Adaptive management (AM) has become a kind of plastic phrase applied as a formulaic panacea for most major species recovery and ecosystem restoration efforts now underway across the United States. AM emerged as an application of the scientific method to resource management, closely tying management to science learning through experimental actions. The phrase “learning by doing” best captures the premise behind developing an experimental management approach that could be applied on the larger scale of a river system or ecosystem. In nearly five decades of application, however, examples of successful AM implementation at large scales are few and conflict remains …

Florida’S Red Tide: The Hidden Costs Of Land Development In The Everglades, Catherine Joan Outman Dec 2020

Florida’S Red Tide: The Hidden Costs Of Land Development In The Everglades, Catherine Joan Outman

Student Theses 2015-Present

How does human development of land affect the surrounding ecosystems? This paper explores the development of the Everglades throughout the 1900s, which turned much of this wetland into farmland. Rerouting and restructuring of the Everglades’ remaining waterways has caused fertilizer-rich water from the farms to be dumped into the ocean. This fertilizer pollution has caused aggressive outbreaks of red tide, a toxic algal bloom which depletes the ocean’s oxygen and kills aquatic ecosystems, off the coast of Southwest Florida. Chapter one presents quantitative data about land development in the Everglades, focusing mainly on the amount of wetland before the 1900s …

Using Drawings In Qualitative Interviews: An Introduction To The Practice, Alexios Brailas

The Qualitative Report

Drawings are employed by qualitative researchers in many creative ways, and in many different contexts, and a variety of different terms are used to describe similar techniques. I present here a concise description of two basic approaches to integrating participants’ produced drawings into verbal qualitative research interviews, along with characteristic cases of empirical research demonstrating how these approaches have been applied. I also provide a list of best practices and I discuss ethical issues. It is common for qualitative researchers to mix techniques in order to creatively address real-world research challenges. The proposed categorization, augmented by the list of best …

A quantitative, multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data. The sample data for this study comprised 75 Arkansas public high schools, selected and stratified …

Religion Wrecked Her Mind: Religious Insanity In The Nineteenth Century, Courtney Lacy Dec 2020

Religion Wrecked Her Mind: Religious Insanity In The Nineteenth Century, Courtney Lacy

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

In this project, I analyze how the line between good and bad religions, as constructed through secularism, influenced whether or not practitioners of religion were sent to insane asylums or, at least, considered by their peers or family to be at risk of insanity or on the brink of it. Exploring these questions revealed the link between religion and insanity but also showed how some religious practices (especially ecstatic behavior) placed believers at even greater risk because of the threat to the secular and progressive narrative encouraged by the people around them.

By placing the asylum narrative in conversation with …

The content of the queries was informed by focus group responses from 18 program participants. Results indicate that text-message college advising offered …

Postdigital Ecopedagogies: Genealogies, Contradictions, And Possible Futures, Derek Ford, Petar Jandrić Dec 2020

Postdigital Ecopedagogies: Genealogies, Contradictions, And Possible Futures, Derek Ford, Petar Jandrić

Education Studies Faculty publications

This paper charts some genealogies, challenges, and directions for experimenting with the utopic postdigital ecopedagogies demanded by our present (post)pandemic reality. These are messianic—rather than prophetic—utopias that exist not as proclamations or programmes for a distant future but as potentialities immanent in the irreducible excess of the present. While their roots most clearly emanate from the Freirean-inspired ecopedagogy movement, we conceptualize ecopedagogies instead as educational forms that emerge from, negotiate, debate, produce, resist, and/or overcome the shifting and expansive postdigital ecosystems from and to which we write and think. These are expansive ecosystems of humans, postdigital machines, nonhuman animals, minerals, …

College Choice And Enrollment Among Youth Formerly In Foster Care, Jacob P. Gross, Ellen Stolzenberg, Alex Williams Dec 2020

College Choice And Enrollment Among Youth Formerly In Foster Care, Jacob P. Gross, Ellen Stolzenberg, Alex Williams

Journal of College Access

Despite being among the most disadvantaged groups with respect to college access and success in the United States, youth formerly in foster care (YFFC) remain an understudied population in higher education research. Although they aspire to college at high levels, youth in foster care enjoy less postsecondary access and success than their peers who have not experienced foster care. This study seeks to better understand how YFFC compare to their peers regarding college preparation, choice, enrollment, and financing; academic self-concept and degree aspirations; and concerns about paying for college. Using Perna's (2008) college choice model and data from the 2016 …

The Relationship Between Criminal Records And Job Performance: An Examination Of Customer Service Representatives, Jakari N. Griffith, Todd C. Harris Dec 2020

The Relationship Between Criminal Records And Job Performance: An Examination Of Customer Service Representatives, Jakari N. Griffith, Todd C. Harris

Personnel Assessment and Decisions

Between 70 million and 100 million Americans—or as many as one in three—have some type of criminal record (Vallas & Dietrich, 2014). Having even a minor criminal record often functions as a significant impediment to gainful employment and resultant economic security. This is especially problematic given that: (a) many companies now incorporate background checks within their hiring process and (b) little empirical research exists about the relationship between criminal records and job performance. Thus, this study examined the relationship between criminal records and objective performance of customer service representatives (N = 627) in a large telecommunications firm. Our regression analyses …
